A: Established in January 2020, Animal Friends Alliance resulted from merging Fort Collins Cat Rescue & Spay/Neuter Clinic and Animal House Rescue & Grooming The primary goal of this merger was to increase the effectiveness of their programs and services, enabling them to help more animals and people in need
Finding the best possible outcome for each animal they care for is their top priority. They ensure that every animal is paired
with a responsible adopter who is ready to provide a lifelong commitment and a loving home. Furthermore, Animal Friends Alliance also offers subsidized spaying and neutering services for dogs and cats, which is a proactive approach to prevent pet homelessness. A: Some people call me a “chicken whisperer.” I grew up with chickens and by now have decades of experience with them. They’re definitely a passion, and I have a couple dozen. We spoil
them rotten and treat them like family. Our sales clerks know they can call me with any customers’ chicken questions to help them find solutions for any issues they may be having with their flock.
Q: What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?
A: When I was a kid, everybody thought I’d be a
veterinarian because I was always doing something with animals. My greatgrandfather was a vet, and I would help with vaccination clinics, flea and tick dips or injured animals. I would go on picnics with my dog Peppy and my mom would pack lunches for each of us. I didn’t know as a kid that becoming a feedstore lady was an option.
The Mission of the Windsor Downtown Alliance FOSTERING COMMUNITY & PROSPERITY
BY BEN HANEYCOMPANY: WINDSOR DOWNTOWN
ALLIANCE
ESTABLISHED: 2011
BUSINESS MISSION:
Promote The Downtown, Protect The Character and Resources Of Downtown, Support Business and Development, Enhance The Experience of Patrons Enjoying Downtown
ADDRESS: 400 Main Street, Suite A, Windsor
WEBSITE: www.windsordda.com/
With a rapidly increasing population, Windsor is a testament to the power of community and the vital role a vibrant downtown plays in the life of its residents. At the forefront of this vision is the Windsor Downtown Alliance (WDA), led by Executive Director Michelle Vance. The Alliance’s mission is multifaceted but clear: to promote the downtown area, protect its character and resources, support business and development, and enhance the experience of patrons enjoying downtown. With a clear vision to help the local community grow and prosper, the WDA seeks to create a vibrant downtown for Windsor
PROMOTING DOWNTOWN WINDSOR
The WDA has seen remarkable progress in promoting downtown Windsor as a hub of economic and social activity “We have had over $13 million of private investment, and 17 new facades,” Vance shares, highlighting the tangible results of their efforts This rejuvenation has not only elevated the area but also significantly contributed to the local economy, making downtown Windsor
a coveted location for businesses. The Hearth building alone, valued at over $11 million per acre, stands as a beacon of the area ’ s economic vitality
PROTECTING WINDSOR’S CHARACTER
Protection of Windsor’s downtown character goes hand in hand with its promotion Vance and her team, in collaboration with Colorado Main Street and the Town of Windsor Historic Preservation Commission, strike a delicate balance between preserving historical buildings and embracing new developments This approach ensures that the downtown area retains its unique charm while accommodating modern needs and opportunities
SUPPORTING BUSINESS AND DEVELOPMENT
The WDA’s support for local businesses is evident as well, with a downtown occupancy rate of 99% “We have a long list of businesses that want to locate in downtown,” Vance proudly states, attributing this demand to the area ’ s desirability and the Alliance’s supportive
initiatives Through fostering an environment where businesses thrive, the WDA directly contributes to the community’s economic health and social vibrancy.
ENHANCING THE DOWNTOWN EXPERIENCE
Enhancing the experience for those who visit and enjoy downtown Windsor is a cornerstone of the WDA’s mission Vance highlights the role of community events in attracting residents and visitors alike, with activities ranging from Wine Walks to the Windsor Harvest Parade These events not only draw people into the downtown area but also foster a sense of community and belonging
DRAWING LESSONS FROM URBAN THEORISTS
The philosophy behind the WDA’s efforts resonates with the teachings of Jane Jacobs and Saskia Sassen Jacobs’ emphasis on “ eyes on the street” and the importance of community involvement in urban development echoes in Windsor’s thriving downtown, where safety, cleanliness, and preservation are prioritized Similarly, Sassen’s work on the global city and the critical role of urban centers in cultural diversity and economic innovation is reflected in Windsor’s approach to fostering a dynamic, inclusive downtown area.
A Vision for the Future
Looking ahead, the Windsor Down-
town Alliance is committed to further enhancing the downtown experience while preserving the area ’ s unique character. Plans for a Downtown Master Plan, including the creation of community plazas and pedestrianfriendly spaces, promise to continue the transformation of Windsor into a model of urban excellence. “Our job is to have a downtown for all,” Vance explains, envisioning a future where Windsor’s historic charm and modern vibrancy coexist in harmony
BUILDING STRONGER, HEALTHIER COMMUNITIES
The Windsor Downtown Alliance’s work underlines a powerful truth: supporting small businesses and promoting healthy downtown areas are crucial steps toward building stronger,
more connected communities
By focusing on the needs and aspirations of its residents, Windsor is paving the way for a future where downtown areas are not just economic centers, but the heart and soul of the community As Windsor continues to grow and evolve, the Windsor Downtown Alliance remains a steadfast guardian of its vibrant downtown, ensuring it remains a place of prosperity, joy and communal pride for generations to come
