Marriott and her assistant Sheree Bostic were selected to be on the show after submitting 10 pictures of cakes and an audition video. Marriott said she learned they were selected to be on the show by the end of May and taped the episode in July in California. Each episode of “Cake Wars” has a theme and Marriott and Bostic competed against three other contestants to create “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” cakes. “It was quite an experience,” Marriott said. “It was a lot of hard work and a quick turnaround during the four days there to create the cakes.” Sweet Cheeks recently closed its storefront but can be reached at (719) 429-8428 or visit www.sweetcheekscakery.biz/ or www.facebook.com/ SweetCheeksCakery.biz.

“How Important is Prosperity?”

Jesus said, “Seek ye first His kingdom and His righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33). “These things” are the physical necessities of life: food, clothing and shelter. While these “things” are important, more important is our relationship with God. When we seek God first, He promises we will have all the “things” we need. Our nation was founded on faith in God and Christian values based on His Word. We are the richest nation on earth: Americans enjoy a standard of living far above all others. But prosperity does not necessarily indicate we are pleasing to God. The standard by which we must measure our faithfulness and devotion to God is His Word, the Bible. We must not be “in love” with the world or the things of the world (1 John 2:15). One cannot serve two masters: our devotion cannot be focused on both God and money. Jesus said, “You cannot serve God and wealth” (Matthew 6:24). If you are struggling financially, it’s OK to want to improve your living conditions. But the Scriptures clearly teach that “things” must not become “idols.” Godliness brings contentment, “but those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and some by longing after it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows” (1 Timothy 6:9-10). Prosperity is fine - as long as we are not “seeking” it first. Rio Evans is the preacher for the Cañon City Church of Christ, 1718 Franklin Avenue Office phone: 719-275-9696. Fundraiser to benefit baby with heart defects Sara Knuth The Daily Record

One day after he was born, Ezrah Gius was put into a breathing machine. The day after that, he had open heart surgery. And for the next six weeks, he’ll be living near Anschutz Children’s Hospital in Aurora with his parents, miles away from their home and jobs. That’s why his grandparents – both Cañon City residents – are trying to raise money to ease the burden. Linda and Bill Worthen are planning a benefit fundraiser for Jan. 20 from 6 to 8 p.m. at First Christian Church, which is located at 320 N. 16th St. in Cañon City. The fundraiser, Linda Worthen said, will include a spaghetti dinner, a silent auction and a performance from the Pueblo-based bluegrass band Fireweed. The suggested donation for the dinner is $10

per plate. Some items at the auction will include wall hangings, wine glasses and a family photo package. She added that the fundraiser will help Gannon and Tia Gius, her son and daughterin-law, address extra expenses associated with caring for their newest son. “We just thought we would do a fundraiser to try to help them out because their costs are enormous,” Worthen said. Before Ezrah was born on Jan. 10, the Gius family knew what was facing them. After a regularly-scheduled ultrasound, Worthen said, Tia Gius learned that something wasn’t right. A few tests later, the family learned that Ezrah had two heart defects, coarctation of the aorta and ventricular septal defect. The defects were so potentially severe, Worthen said, that medical teams didn’t want
