Jack Kenneth Nichols was born August 28, 1926, in Prague, Lincoln County, Oklahoma, to Benjamin Rufus “BR”, and Maudie Belle (Anderson) Nichols. He was the youngest of 4 sisters and 2 brothers. He died January 5, 2017, in Pueblo, Colorado. He outlived them all. In early 1944, at the age of 17, he was very aware of the world’s situation. By that time his family had moved from the farm where he was born, to Okemah, Oklahoma. He had a large paper route delivering a variety of several papers. He went to a theater on weekends and watched the Jack Nichols News Reels. When he knew that he would be drafted, he said, “I begged my mama to sign the papers and let me go early.” She did, and with tears in her eyes told him how proud she was of him. He never graduated from high school. After Boot Camp he turned eighteen on the Queen Mary headed to England. He was in Company F, 328th Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry Division (Yankee Division), 12th Corps, Patton’s 3rd Army. His official title was “Truck Driver Light, 345.” But of course, that was just on paper. He did many things. He barely weighed 130 pounds. As they maneuvered, he started off carrying 60 rounds of mortar shells and was the man who dropped the rounds into the tube. This only lasted as long as it took his company commander to see him get blown head first into a bar ditch on a road that was just hit by a German “Screamin’ MeMe” 88 mm round. He hurt his neck, something that would torment him the rest of his life, but did not want to leave his unit. He survived the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge, EasternAfrica-Middle Eastern (EAME) Campaign Ribbon with 2 Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, Army Occupation Ribbon (Germany), 2 Overseas Service Bars, Victory Ribbon, and the Bronze Star Medal. The Bronze Star does not signify any single event, but simply says “Meritorious Achievement in Ground Combat against the armed enemy during World War II in the European Theater of Operations”. He remembers being in France, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Switzerland, and Italy. He remembered meeting the Russian Army on a river bridge and once seeing General Eisenhower coming through their unit and encouraging them. After the war, his return home through Italy was
on the Queen Elizabeth. His discharge paper read, “Convenience of the Government (Demobilization)”. He was then issued the Lapel Button, “The Ruptured Duck.” After the war, he returned to Oklahoma. He farmed, he used a Government VA Program to attend classes on the most “current” farming techniques, and used the VA for a loan to purchase his first tractor. It was a Ford 8N and he had to go to a Blacksmith to adapt his horse-drawn equipment to make it fit the tractor. He raised peanuts, hay, dairy cows, and hogs. Spanish Peanuts were popular as well as Jersey and Guernsey milk cows. He separated the cream, selling it in town. Any extra unsold milk was fed to the hogs. In 1951, he met and married Norma Riddle. The first time he met her she had a “red pokey-dot” dress on. It was love at first sight. He had previously rented a farm hear Bristow, Oklahoma. They were married in Seminole, Oklahoma, and moved to a farm south of Prague, Oklahoma. In 1954 a son, Gary, was born. A severe drought destroyed their peanut and hay crop in 1956. In early 1957 they moved to the Cañon City area where Norma had an older brother and family. Another son, Danny, was born late 1957. He had some small, short term jobs, until Norma read an ad in the local paper advertising for a full-time fireman. He was a fireman for 20 years retiring in 1977, as captain of a shift. As a fireman, in 1972, he became the first Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) in Fremont County, Colorado. In 2013, through the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) General Marion Chapter in Cañon City, Colorado, he received a Lifetime Service Award from the State of Colorado for his endeavors as a veteran, fireman, and EMT. After retiring, they moved to rural Custer County, Colorado. They purchased undeveloped land, built a house, barn, and sheds. They raised hay, cows, and cut and sold firewood to help make ends meet. After more than 60 years of marriage, Norma passed away in early 2012. When Jack reached the point where he could no longer be alone, he spent his last years at Vali Assisted Living in Silvercliffe. The one thing Jack would have wanted people to know about him and remember him by, was that he was a Christian and had great faith. He became a Christian after the war and was a lifetime member of the Church of Christ in Oklahoma and Colorado. He once served as an elder at the Church of Christ in Cañon City, Colorado.

Chocolate Walk, activities set for Feb. 11 Feb. 11 is going to be a big day, full of fun, and the community is invited to take part in a number of activities across Cañon City in celebration of Valentine’s Day weekend. Starting at 8:30 a.m., the inaugural Woman’s Snow Queen 5K Race, hosted by Fremont Adventure Recreation, will raise awareness for Woman’s Heart Month (YETI). The race starts at 575 Ash St. Each $25 ticket will include a breakfast brunch. The Cañon City Music and Blossom Festival will host the 15th annual Chocolate/Art Walk from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. downtown where organizers are joining their efforts with local artists. More than 40 downtown merchants will be making homemade chocolate and displaying unique hand-painted chairs in different stores. This year, 350 people will have the chance to walk downtown to eat chocolate and vote for their favorite “Chair-ity Chair.”
Chairs will be auctioned off on First Friday at 715 Main St. with all proceeds to benefit CASA and the Blossom committee. Each $20 ticket will include a bag, hand painted by local school children (a big thanks to the Rick and Rachel Sutton who are committed to seeing this task through) and a Chocolate Bar from the Chocolate Therapist (sponsored by Dave and Lynda Lambert of Cañon Signature Mortgage. Inside several bars will be the Blossom Bucks ranging from $20 to $75, which can be spent at any participating downtown merchant. Tickets are available the week of Jan. 19 at the Cañon City Chamber of Commerce, The Petal Pusher Flower Shop, Vintage Revival and Altered Antiques. At 4 p.m., Zonta will take to the Royal Gorge Bridge for the annual ‘One Million Rising’ Dance, raising the awareness to empower women to take control of their lives.

Bunk House Burgers celebrates anniversary Bunk House Burgers celebrated its fourth anniversary Jan. 15 and it continues to offer quality burgers seven days a week. Sisters Kathleen and Joanie Shoemaker opened the restaurant at 2147 Fremont Drive in 2013 and have kept it as a family run business. The restaurant always has had a country western theme with a variety of options, including local favorites the Bronco Buster and Slopper. The Shoemakers have a long history in Fremont County. The family has run a ranch in the area for more than 120 years. The beef used at Bunk House is natural and grass fed and always fresh. Kathleen has worked in the restaurant industry for most of her life, knowing the procedures and processes like a pro. She said the best part of the restaurant is being in a great, supportive community. Kathleen and husband Bruce Bowman love being in a small town where they are able to spend time with their customers and build relationships. One thing Bruce and Kathleen love to do each year is host the Most Wanted Burger Challenge. The contest allows residents to submit creative, flavorful burger combinations with unique names. The top five burger submissions will be invited to Bunk House Burgers on Jan. 29, where they will dress their burgers for a celebrity panel of food critics.

Sgt. Timothy Bell recognized for helping save life Less than four months after the Cañon City Police Department announced that all of its officers had been trained to administer Narcan, a nasal spray that is a reversal agent for heroin and prescription opioid overdoses, one life already has been saved. Sgt. Timothy Bell was recognized during Tuesday’s City Council meeting by Interim Police Chief Allen Cooper and the Cañon City Council for his efforts in saving the life of a citizen Jan. 3 after finding the individual pale and unresponsive. “(The reporting party) is really the one who should be getting this (recognition),” Bell said. “I just do my job, she’s the one who really did the quick action.” Cooper said dispatch received a call that afternoon from a Cañon City address needing assistance with a suspected heroin overdose. Thirty seconds later, the reporting party called back and said that because her boyfriend was “stroking out,” she was not going to wait for rescue and she was going to transport him
to the hospital. “She did not make it to the emergency room,” Cooper said. “The male party suffered a major seizure, in front of Goodwill,” Cooper said. “She stopped and there literally was nothing she could do.” While en route to the call, Bell noticed the vehicle stopped in the roadway and based on his training and information provided by dispatch, he administered a dose of Narcan but got no results. “It normally is effective within literally a matter of seconds,” Cooper said. “A second officer arrived on scene, Sgt. Bell asked for his kit, he administered a second dose of Narcan, and literally within less than a minute, this individual was awake, alert and answering questions.” The individual was transported to the hospital for further treatment. Bell said this was the first time he had used Narcan, but he was prepared to do so. “I’ve seen (heroin overdoses) before; I saw it and I knew it was probably an opiate overdose,” he said about the Jan. 3 incident.

Humane Society of Fremont County saved 96 percent of animals this year Carie Canterbury The Daily Record Cats, dogs, hamsters, rabbits, birds, chickens, roosters, goats and even snakes and mice — you name it and they save it. The Humane Society of Fremont County in 2016 saved 98 percent of all dogs, 93 percent of all cats, and 100 percent of all other animals, leading to a combined save rate of 96 percent for the year. The combined save rate in 2015 was 94 percent. “Though I always want these percentages higher, 96 percent is one of the highest save rates in the country for an open-admission shelter,” said Doug Rae, the executive director of the Humane Society of Fremont County. “We will treat anything that comes through the door, no matter how young, how old, how sick or how injured, we treat every single animal that comes in here, cost is simply not a factor.” Rae said the shelter would not have such a high save rate without the support of the community. “There is no way we could have saved 96 percent of the animals without community support,” he said. “None, whatsoever. It’s the people who adopt, it’s the people who foster, it’s the people who donate, it’s the people who bring bags of food in — they are the ones that do everything to keep this place spinning. “ The shelter tried to raise $30,000 at the end of December to go toward this year’s medical expenses, but as of Jan. 12, they had only raised about $15,155. “That will pay for three and a half months of medical for this year,” Rae said. Medical needs and expenses vary. The shelter spent about $5,000 on medical care for a dog last year, and in recent weeks, a 3-yearold dog named Bear came in with badly injured and torn paws, and in need of about $1,000 in medical care. He spent a week in Rae’s office recovering before being adopted. “We don’t know what happened to him because he came in with all four of his paws wide open, with the pad coming right off,” he said. “In the 15 years I’ve been managing shelters, I’ve never seen anything like this, and I’ve seen some really bad stuff over the years.” Rae said every animal is worth treating and saving, but it does cost money. Rae came to the shelter in September 2014, and this is the first year they’ve been able to get their feet on the ground. Funding from local municipalities for services helps, however, they’re still not in a financial position this year to purchase the $30,000 cat cages they need. “The other thing that is going to hurt us is the new minimum wage law,” he said. “Though it might not hurt some (larger business), it’s really going to hurt us. We’re going to be OK this year, we’re going to start feeling the effects of it next year and the year after — I don’t even know how we are going to pay the bills, I really and truly don’t know how we are going to pay the bills.”
(Carie Canterbury / Daily Record) Three-year-old Bear, a dog who recently was brought into the Humane Society of Fremont County with all four of his paws torn wide open and his pads coming off, is pictured when he first arrived at the shelter. The image on the right was taken Jan. 12 after having received medical care by Eskridge Veterinary Clinic, recovering at the shelter and finally being adopted.
Once the pay rate for front line staff goes up to $12 an hour, the managers’ pay will need to increase, as well. “It certainly wouldn’t be fair for me to turn around and say to the county and the city I need more money to pay my employees, because here I am asking for more money so I can do more for the animals and the people in this community,” he said. “It’s going to be tough in 2018.” The shelter currently employs seven full-time employees and six part-time individuals. The shelter did have fewer intakes in 2016 than in 2015. Last year, 1,710 live animals came into the shelter, compared to 1,880 the previous year. “It’s always a good thing when the numbers go down every year,” Rae said. “It could be spay and neuter, it could be that people are keeping their dogs in their backyard.” Intakes are much slower in December, and even on Jan. 13, there were only 27 dogs and 11 cats living at the shelter. More cats and kittens will begin arriving when the weather gets warmer and springtime nears, Rae said. When asked why he puts forth so much effort into keeping the animals healthy and alive, Rae’s answer was simple. “It’s the only thing I know how to do,” he said. “It really is. I don’t know what else I’d be doing right now if I wasn’t saving lives for a living. I just absolutely love it.” For more information, or to learn how to donate, visit the Humane Society of Fremont County on Facebook or visit www.humanesocietyfremontcounty.org.
Humane Society honored as Chamber Member of the Year The Humane Society of Fremont County was named Member of the Year during the 129th annual Chamber Banquet on Friday at the Abbey Events Center. Executive Director Doug Rae said the award truly was an honor and he became quite emotional when the announcement was made. “It was the biggest award I had ever received in my life,” he said. “No award comes close to what I got Friday night.” Rae said he is pleased that the community notices the work and effort being done at the shelter, as well the work happening in the community on behalf of the Humane Society of Fremont County. — Carie Canterbury
