Tim Tebow Foundation’s ‘Night to Shine’ becomes worldwide movement
(Carie Canterbury/ Daily Record) Jeff Little moved his Westcliffe restaurant, JB’s Cafe at The Feedstore, into Royal Gorge Brewing in early December.
JB’s moves into Royal Gorge Brewery Jeff Little moved his Westcliffe restaurant, JB’s Cafe at The Feedstore, into Royal Gorge Brewing in early December, creating a new opportunity for Main Street within the brewery. As the new operator and manager, Little has made significant changes to the menu. Little kept the fish & chips, top sirloin, and green chile menu options, but he added his signature paninis, including The Crazy Cubano! and Steak ‘n Bello. Little said the popular Sangre Cristo is his version of a Monte Cristo, but it’s made with homemade bread. Pasta options include Grilled Chicken Alfredo and The Snake Bite, which can be served with a rabbit/rattlesnake brat, and some of the more popular appetizers include seafood fondue and spinach artichoke dip.
JB’s also offers a new drink menu featuring several specialty drinks, shots, loaded Bloody Mary’s with three options, fish bowls, Pineapple Upside Down Martinis and Colorado Sunrises. Matt Darling continues to make his housebrewed beer. Little operated his Westcliffe establishment for two-and-a-half years, but he’s been in the restaurant industry for nearly 15. He said he looks forward to being in Cañon City, especially on Main Street. JB’s at the Royal Gorge Brewery is located at 413 Main St. Hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The business phone number is 719-345-4141. For more information, visit “JB’s at The Royal Gorge Brewery” on Facebook.
This year marks the third anniversary of Night to Shine, sponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation. In just three years, this unforgettable prom night experience, centered on God’s love, for people with special needs, ages 14 and older, has become a worldwide movement. This year, more than 150,000 volunteers in more than 375 churches around the world will serve more than 75,000 honored guests simultaneously on one night, Friday, Feb. 10. The local event will be hosted by Starpoint and Vineyard Church at 245 S. Reynolds. As sponsor of Night to Shine, the Tim Tebow Foundation provides each host church with the official 2017 Night to Shine Planning Manual, the official Night to Shine Prom Kit, complete with decorations and gifts for the guests, and personalized guidance and support from a Tim Tebow Foundation staff member. The foundation also is providing financial support to hundreds of churches needing assistance in hosting the event. This year alone, the Tim Tebow Foundation will contribute more than $3 million in financial grants to assist churches in hosting Night to Shine in their communities. To help offset the annual expense of Night to Shine, TTF has been searching for corporate partners who share the foundation’s heart for people with special needs. Every guest of Night to Shine enters this complimentary event on a red carpet complete with a warm welcome from a friendly crowd and paparazzi. Once inside, guests receive the royal treatment, including hair and makeup stations, shoe shining areas, limousine rides, corsages and boutonnieres, a catered dinner, karaoke, prom favors for each honored guest and, of course, a dance floor... all leading up to the moment when each guest is crowned king or queen of the prom. Night to Shine 2017 promises to be the most impactful event yet, with more than 375 churches signed up to participate all around the world.
Cañon City High School seeks donations for Fun Fest event For seniors at Cañon City High School, attending Fun Fest the day before graduation has become a rite of passage. “It’s part of our heritage. It’s part of our county history,” said Shad Johnson, an event organizer and the treasurer of the Cañon City School Board. With games, prizes and dinner, the May event, which focuses on keeping seniors safe before graduation, is entering its 29th year. Ahead of this year’s event, set for May 24, organizers are looking for donations to help fund it. Johnson said generally, the event raises between $10,000 and $15,000
from donors throughout the community. “They come in, and I don’t care if it’s $20. It still goes back to the kids,” Johnson said. “We try to give everybody one more chance to be together and to just have fun.” For CCHS, the event has been 29 years of games and prizes held for a full day at the school. But the events leading up Fun Fest were filled with tragedy. In May 1986, one week before graduation, CCHS students Cindy Javernick and Chris Berry died in a car accident after getting hit by a driver who was racing someone. Two years after that, Sunflower
Bank President Larry Stringari and the late CCHS JROTC teacher Rhody Heinen created the event as a way to keep seniors safe before graduation. A year later, Johnson said organizer Larry Weaver joined the cause and still helps today. “They came together and said, ‘Hey, we need to have something for our graduating seniors prior to graduation to keep them safe,’” Johnson said. “Ultimately, Fun Fest was born to try and keep kids safe.” Because the school’s graduation ceremony will fall on a Thursday this year, the event will fall on a Wednesday, which is different from previous years.
“Graduation has generally been on Saturday, and Fun Fest on Friday,” he said. “Graduation this year is going to be on a Thursday night.” But regardless of the change, he said he expects the support to stay strong. Donations can be made by sending checks to Claudine Paolino at Sunflower Bank, 831 Royal Gorge Blvd, or to Johnson at Mueller Financial Solutions, 303 N. Seventh St. For questions, Johnson can be reached at (719) 275-1651 or through email at shad@themuellercompanies.com. Paolino can be reached at (719) 275-2311.
