The Cellhouse breaks out on Main Street Just in time for the upcoming holiday shopping season, The CellHouse at 602 Main St. opened its doors for business. Dan and Deb Brown, and their son, Kevin Brown, will offer a wide variety of gift items, fresh food products, furniture, household components and much more, all handmade and homegrown by offenders taking part in the Colorado Correctional Industries. A division of the Colorado Department of Corrections, CCI is a combination of more than 60 programs which employs about 1,800 offenders. A spokesperson for DOC said the CCI gift shop at the decommissioned Colorado Women’s Correctional Facility will remain open, however, Dan Brown said The CellHouse has a much larger showroom. The 5,000-square foot store will feature cutting boards, metal wall art, fly rods, battle dress uniforms, guitars, saddles, shirts, etched wine glasses, aprons and more.
“This place will have a little of everything,” Brown said. “The inventory will change a lot.” Some of the larger items that can be found at The CellHouse include a 1944 refurbished Ford tractor, Old Max Choppers, yard furniture, planters, cutting board islands, and wooden canoes. Some specialty items can be made to order. Food products include honey, water buffalo meat, smoked trout, goat cheese and tilapia. A variety of fresh breads will be available every Monday while supplies last. “The back part of the store is from Colorado Surplus, and we’ll have different things coming in all the time,” Brown said. “We never know what we will get from surplus.” Surplus items for sale include brand new filing cabinets, office furniture and handmade tables and benches. For fun, a jail cell, made from the old jail at Buckskin Joe, is housed in the corner of the showroom for photos.
Brown quietly has been working on the idea of opening The CellHouse for about four years. A woman involved in Colorado tourism industry asked him during Rural Philanthropy Days why Cañon City doesn’t embrace its local prison system and its history. “I had to balance how we could let people know that we do have prisons, and that they are part of our history, and still be positive,” Brown said. “I knew that we needed a store downtown, we had a lot of empty stores. This will be a great addition to the downtown.” Dave Lambert and Shirley Troutman were instrumental in helping get The CellHouse up and running, Brown said. “We’re excited to be part of downtown,” Deb Brown said. Beginning Friday, store hours will be 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays. For more information, visit “The CellHouse” on Facebook or email cellhousegifts@gmail.com.

Fremont County Election Department Off the Top expects highest voter turnout this year Salon welcomes nails specialist Ballots are being mailed this week to all registered active voters, and all the equipment at the Fremont County’s Voter Service and Polling Center has been tested and is ready to go for the Nov. 8 presidential election. Ballots must be received by the Election Department at 7 p.m. Election Day, but officials encourage voters to turn ballots in early. The last day ballots will be mailed out is Oct. 31, and those should be hand delivered to ensure they arrive by the deadline. Colorado law allows eligible citizens to register to vote through Election Day. Never before has there been the number of active voters in Fremont County as there is today, according to Fremont County Clerk Katie Barr. There are more than 26,000 who are active, and the number is increasing daily. As of Oct. 12, there were 11,573 active Republicans, 5,114 active Democrats, 8,979 active unaffiliated voters, 142 active American Constitutionalists, 63 active in the Green Party and 236 active Libertarians. Inactive voters, or voters whose confirmation cards or ballots are returned, will not receive a ballot in the mail. With the presidential election, several statewide questions and some proposed local issues, Election Director Jami Goff said the department is expecting its highest voter turnout this year. Voter turnout in Old Harry and Polly will be at the Cup and Cone to greet the living for a whole week, beginning Oct. 24.
(Carie Canterbury/ Daily Record)
Election Director Jami Goff, left, and Chief Deputy Dotty Gardunio demonstrate the procedure for vote counting at the Fremont County Administration Building.
Fremont County for the 2012 presidential election was 87 percent, and during the 2014 general election, voter turnout was 54 percent, she said. There are 48 different ballot styles available to Fremont County residents this year, based on precincts, various districts and wards. Sample ballots may be viewed at http://fremontco.com. Goff said once ballots are returned to the Election Department, the procedure for vote counting is meticulous and there is very little room for error. Two judges, a Democrat and a Republican sit side by side at each station to verify signatures and run ballots through machines. Judges monitor e-scan machines which tally the votes onto mobile tally boxes and are tabulated on Election night.
The mobile ballot box has the votes, but does not give results until it’s plugged into a machine that’s locked in election equipment storage room until after 7 p.m. on Election night. Two officials must be present while in the storage room, and they must log in and out in writing. None of the equipment is hooked up to the Internet, and doors are padlocked and computers are tightly password protected. Only an electronic poll book allows judges to have a live database to know whether a person has already voted. Election judges are preselected by the parties during the caucuses, chosen by the Election Department and finally approved by the parties. Judges are trained for signature verification
through the state and are sworn in before performing their duties. “They are not allowed to talk about their opinions, their beliefs, who they want for president, or who they like or don’t like,” Barr said. “They talk about everything else — they get comfy down here because they spend a lot of time here.” There is a total of about 18 judges who are paid an hourly rate for their services. Judges, comprised of a bi-partisan team, also must pick up the ballot boxes in Florence and Howard, as well as ballots at the Post Office. To register to vote, update information, check ballot status or find a polling location, visit GoVoteColorado. com.

Photo op for goblins and ghouls Old Harry Sunn is something of a celebrity; he is a frequent visitor to fourth-grade classrooms in Cañon City. Since Oct. 1 and with the help of his personal valet, Polly, he has been slowly getting dressed for his big annual visit to the Cup and Cone. We snapped these pics right before he found his shirt. He lamented that his tattoos are no longer with him. Actually, he went into a revere about his scars too! Old Harry and Polly will be at the Cup and Cone to greet the living for a whole week, beginning Oct. 24. He has agreed to pictures but will not be doing autographs. Old Harry will supervise the drawing for the Haunted Gingerbread Mansion when he arrives Oct 24!

“Losing the Right” Previously we saw that believing in Jesus gives one the “right” to become a child of God (John 1:11-12). It would follow that any who refuse to believe in Jesus would not have that right. As used here, to have the “right” means to have the “privilege” or to be entitled. It’s like the right to vote: to be entitled to vote carries with it certain responsibilities, such as being a legal resident and registering to vote. If one fails to meet certain requirements he does not have the right to vote. If one is a convicted felon, he loses the privilege to vote. In Colorado, anyone who is convicted of a felony is ineligible to vote while incarcerated and on parole. Voting rights are automatically restored upon completion of parole, and those on probation can vote. Laws vary somewhat from state to state but it seems fair and reasonable that those who refuse to obey the law should also lose the right to participate in the process. Children who refuse to obey the rules of their parents may lose certain privileges. The right to owning your home or car involves the responsibility to make the payments on time. The right to drive depends upon responsible driving habits. The list could go on but we understand that with rights come responsibilities. It might be nice if everybody would go to heaven when they die, but the Bible teaches that salvation is conditional: it requires obedient faith in Jesus Christ. Those who refuse obedience to the gospel of Christ lose the right to become children of God. The Introductory Interest Rate will be fixed at 1.50% during the 6-month Introductory Period. A higher introductory rate will apply for an LTV above 80%. Offer is available for new applications submitted from September 11 – November 11, 2016. After the 6-month introductory period: the APR is variable and is based upon an index plus a margin. The APR will vary with Prime Rate (the index) as published in the Wall Street Journal. As of September 11, 2016, the variable rate for Home Equity Lines of Credit ranged from 2.62% APR to 7.20% APR. Higher rates may apply due to an increase in the Prime Rate, a credit limit below $100,000, an LTV above 70%, and/or a credit score less than 730. A U.S. Bank Consumer Silver, Gold, or Platinum Checking Package account is required to receive the lowest rate, but is not required for loan approval. The rate will not vary above 18% APR, or applicable state law, or below 2.12% APR – 2.55% APR, depending on market.
