Community views conceptual plans for Centennial Park renovation
Plans for some significant upgrades at Centennial Park are in the beginning stages — plans that include much more lawn space and more room for large gatherings. Three preliminary conceptual plans for the redevelopment of the park were unveiled during an open house Thursday at City Hall. Mary Hart, trails designer with Mary Hart Design, said a few options have been presented for
the sake of getting the conversation started, but the planning committee is in the “listening” phase right now. Nothing is set in stone at this point, she said. “The options show different ideas for the park and different ideas on how to connect it to Main Street,” Hart said. “Some parts of the park will stay as is — the tennis courts, the baseball/ softball practice area, the duck pond
— but other parts of the park will get pretty significantly renovated.”
One of the major changes depicted in the concepts is the elimination of the vehicular circulation that is adjacent to the river, making more room for the park itself. A pedestrian walkway could lead from the park to Main Street along Third Street, with a signaled crossing at U.S. 50,
and potentially a Clocktower Plaza at Third and Main, which could have a water feature or other kids play amenity. The plans also could include an enclosed dog park, relocating the park offices to the southeast portion of the park area and an outdoor classroom near the river.
Two of the plan options would have a soccer field, something 10-yearold Elias Hunter, his
sister, Gwendolyn, 8, and their mom, Lynnette Hunter would like to see. Councilwoman Ashley Smith said based on a citizen survey conducted in 2016, about 84 percent of the respondents were in favor of upgrading Centennial Park. The planning committee now will gather community input and develop a preferred option to present to the city council for approval.
There is no price tag associated with the project yet, but the plan will be completed in phases once it’s adopted and funding is available. The City of Cañon City will post the conceptual images on its website at www.canoncity. org, and residents are invited to send their input to maryhartdesign@ gmail.com or rtbrady@canoncity. org.

ANTIQUES:
“When to Share?”
Christians are responsible to share with those who are truly in need. We must have a heart of compassion for the destitute. Yet we should not rely solely on our feelings to direct us but use wisdom and discernment. Having said that, I will be the first to admit that knowing just who to help is difficult. The guy standing by the road holding up a sign: is he really in need? Is he just temporarily out of a job but willing to work - or is begging his chosen profession? I know that I have been conned many times by people who were just “working the system.” As a minister, I hear more hard-luck stories than most folks do but still don’t seem to have wisdom enough to know when someone is being truthful or deceptive with me. Even local organizations whose main mission is to provide help to the homeless must have a certain set of guidelines to go by in determining who they should assist. Most would agree that our society is far more complicated and confusing than ever before. Some of us can remember when we didn’t worry much about locking the front door or picking up a hitch-hiker; when it was safe to walk down the street; when pot, meth, heroin and crack-cocaine were unknown to us. Yes, there have always been predators and scammers who are more than willing to take advantage of the vulnerable. Before sending His disciples out among predators Jesus said, “be ye wise as serpents and harmless as doves” (Matthew 10:16). Those divine words of caution are “ageless.”

Timing....Is EVERYTHING!
• There is a season for everything and the real estate market is no different. You want to time the marketing of your home, “Just Right” • Too Soon and you languish on the market & by the time the buyers are here and ready to see your house, they wonder, “What is wrong with it?” • List too late and the qualified buyers may never even see your home at all & may have already put an offer on something else.
