Rouse Park now sports pickleball courts

What sat silent and forgotten for more than three years now is a hub of excitement, activity and energy. The once dilapidated tennis courts at Rouse Park now have been removed and replaced with six brand new regulationsized pickleball courts. The old courts were more than 40 years old and had been closed the last three years because of disrepair. A group of citizens and pickleball players, along with the Cañon City Area Recreation and Park District, spearheaded the effort to find funding for the $135,000 project. Of that cost, $91,500 was provided through a Great Outdoors Colorado grant that was written by Dawn Green, finance director for the CCARPD. “This effort was a local effort to get donations up to a level that would really help to secure a grant,” said Jim Hoar, executive director. “The only way we can do projects like this is to secure a grant in some form or fashion.” In addition to local individuals and businesses, and some from Pueblo, other contributors who assisted with matching funds were Fremont County, the City of Cañon City, the Cañon City School District and the Royal Gorge Association of Realtors, who provided benches. Cañon City resident Peg Davison said pickleball started here in 2012. “I got my two neighbors in front of me and my two neighbors behind me to come play, and sometimes when we didn’t have enough players, we asked the tennis players to come over and fill in for us,” she said. “Now it’s come to this, and it’s wonderful.” Stephanie Acello just started playing pickleball about four months

Cañon City resident Peg Davison; Dawn Green, finance director for the Cañon City Area Recreation and Park District; Ken Burger, board president; and pickleball players Sherrill and Marty Kuiken, cut a rope signifying the official opening of the new pickleball courts Thursday at Rouse Park. (Carie Canterbury / Daily Record)

ago. She said the new courts will be a draw for visitors outside the area. “I have a friend in Colorado Springs who wants to do a fundraiser and have Pikes Peak versus Cañon City,” she said. “This is such a positive aspect of what Cañon City does.” Pueblo resident David Raymond, ambassador for the USA Pickleball Association, plays with the Cañon City Pickleball players regularly. He said Pueblo and Pueblo West have no dedicated outdoor pickleball courts, but they have some that are indoors. He also has demonstration pickleball rackets for people to try out before they move forward with a purchase. Roger Ganger and Chris Trask, also of Pueblo, helped with the pickleball

courts project. They, too, hope to see outdoor pickleball courts in Pueblo. “You guys are so far ahead of us right now, it makes us really sad,” Trask said. “I am glad for you, but sad for us. You are way ahead of us.” Sherrill Kuiken said the public is welcome to join the pickleball group that plays at 8 a.m. daily. Competitive groups play at 9 a.m. daily, and groups play at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday nights. The courts have lighting for nighttime play. She said they give complimentary lessons, and they visit local elementary schools to teach students how to play, as well.

Florence-Penrose School District’s second annual technology fair showcases innovations FLORENCE — With drones flying overhead and robots rolling along floors, the halls of Florence High School were filled with technology Thursday for the FlorencePenrose School District’s second annual technology fair. The fair, which consisted of 55 different presentations from students, teachers and vendors, highlighted some of the latest innovations in technology, especially those that can be used in the classroom. “The whole idea is to bring awareness to the technology we use every single day,” said Scott Elliott, the district’s technology implementation specialist. For Elliott, the fair also was a chance to get rid of one major stigma: that children use technology too much. “A lot of times people think technology is bad,” he said. “And so they think of it as game time, screen time. So, we want to highlight some of the really cool educational things that we have in our district or that we potentially could have in our district.” In the Florence-Penrose School District, technology is a large part of daily instruction in its four schools — each student, third through 12th grade, is issued an iPad. Additionally, Elliott said, elementary

classrooms use interactive Promethean smartboards, and most teachers have a document camera and laptops. “We have 1,400 devices in our district,” he said. “You look at other schools in southern Colorado, typically they don’t have that technology in the classroom.” Florence High School senior Charles Wanner said he uses technology in almost every class. “I have horrible handwriting, so being able to type and have my notes saved on something that can’t get crumpled up is very beneficial for me,” he said. “At first, I was a little skeptical because it didn’t work half the time, but now that it works, it’s really helpful for everyone.” At the fair, Wanner presented information with sophomore English teacher Dana Winegardner about Google Classroom, a program the school uses to submit and receive notifications about assignments. Winegardner said getting used to using so much technology in the classroom took some adjusting.“You just have to keep an open mind, because we became the students,” she said. “We had to step out of our comfort zone of paper and pencil and use that.” Sophomore Madison Miller, who presented music editing app Hokusai,

said she likes having technology in class.“It’s a fun way to get kids involved in schoolwork because you get to use fun apps like this,” she said. Anne Farus, the choir and music appreciation teacher at FHS, said sometimes it’s difficult to set boundaries with students, but overall, she sees the benefit of integrating more innovation technology.“We live in the 21st century where it’s everywhere and they’re going to be expected to use it when they’re in the real world, whether they’re in college or getting a job right away,” she said. During the fair, attendees also could talk with a variety of vendors, including those who sell 3D printers, robots and educational apps. The district also gave away a Chromebook, Circle and iTunes gift cards. And most of the tables that lined the hallways of the school included students and teachers who use the technology, ranging from welding simulators to movieediting apps, on a daily basis. “It’s a small district, but we have so many opportunities for technology for students and teachers, and I think people don’t realize,” Elliott said.

A “theocracy” is a system of government wherein God is accepted as the supreme ruler. The nation of Israel was a theocracy: under The Law of Moses, the priests and local elders were to lead according to the Word of God, yet God was their supreme ruler. After Moses and Joshua died, the people became wicked and God sent a series of saviors or “judges” to rescue them from their enemies. Samuel was the last of the judges, but when Samuel grew old he appointed his sons to be judges over Israel. However, his sons were corrupt, took bribes and perverted justice. Then the elders of Israel came to Samuel, saying, “Behold, you are old and your sons do not walk in your ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations” (1 Samuel 8:5). Samuel was displeased and prayed to God about the matter. God told him to warn the people what would happen under a king. Samuel did but the people refused to listen and demanded a king, so God told Samuel to give them what they wanted! God knew that by asking for a king, they were rejecting Him and the results would be disastrous! Here’s the point: very soon the USA will have a new president and it will be according to the choice of the majority of the people. God is in control and He wants us to obey Him but sometimes He gives people what they want - whether it be good or bad. Let’s hope and pray that we the people make the best choice!
