Toys for Tots Marine Corps. accepting donations, assistance requests

Toys for children of all ages are being collected in anticipation of the annual Marine Corps Reserves Toys for Tots campaign. Businesses in town have the Toys for Tots boxes displayed, where anyone can drop of new, unwrapped toys for local children in need. “Cash donation boxes are also in local businesses and funds are used to purchase toys for age groups that are short on selection for this year,” according to the Toys for Tots website. Carl Clink, coordinator for the local Toys for Tots, said he has dozens of requests already, which is the case every year. “That’s what we do, we try to take care of everyone,” Clink said. He said typically, each child is given two and a half toys, which is two normal sized toys and one smaller one that is meant to be a stocking stuffer. The local Toys for Tots campaign is accepting requests from residents in Fremont and Custer counties only. According to its website, the organization asks anyone requesting assistance list the child’s interests in the last column, so volunteers have a better idea what the child wants or needs. “We are limited to certain items and do our very best to make sure every child receives gifts at this very special season,” the website said. The deadline to submit an assistance request is Dec. 14 and can be found at http://canon-cityco.toysfortots.org/. Clink said that the whole mission behind Toys for Tots is to give a child a little bit of Christmas. “Some people out there, you know, they have to choose between rent, food or toys. We are here to help people with giving their kids that Christmas,” Clink said.

ALL REMAINING ARTIFICIAL CCPD, CCHS team up for safety belt campaign PRE-LIT TREES During the week of Dec. 19-21, Cañon City Police Officers and Cañon City High school National Honor Society Members along with members of Student Counsel will be checking students leaving the school parking lots during the lunch hour looking for safety belt violations and violations of the Graduated Driver’s License requirements set forth by Colorado State law on young drivers. Area businesses such as Burger King, Sonic and Wendy’s have donated food coupons in their support of CCHS Tigers buckling up for safety and not texting while they operate a motor vehicle. School Resource Officer Steve Huskey stated with students having a new school identification card to be prominently displayed on each student’s person during school hours, a method was needed to help them out. Funds from the Royal Gorge Youth Initiative were utilized to purchase identification lanyards with a safety break away. These Lanyards are in school colors with the text “CCHS Tigers don’t Text & Drive. Wear Your Safety belt!” Monday verbal warnings will be issued for safety belt violations, Tuesday written warnings and citations on Wednesday for any violations observed. The Cañon City Police Department is committed to educating our drivers less than 20 years of age and truly appreciates the partnership with the NHS Members and Student Counsel of Cañon City. This is the second safety belt campaign this year with CCHS. The first one was Feb. 1-5.

You bade no one a last farewell, nor even said “goodbye.” You were gone before we knew it, and only God know why. God gave us strength to bear it And the courage to meet the blow What it meant to lose him No one will ever really know. He left us quietly with thoughts unknown

But left a memory we are proud to own So treasure him dear Lord, In your gard of rest. For when he was on earth He was one of the very best. If God would grant us just one wish It would be for yesterday and you. Sadly missed and loved forever Wife and Family

FCT’s production of ‘A Christmas Story’ opens Sara Knuth

The Daily Record

The theater at Washington Elementary School buzzed with action Wednesday night as actors from the Fremont Civic Theatre rehearsed for their upcoming production of “A Christmas Story.” As director Sherry Carpenter fielded questions from the crew, Marty Fenyves, who plays a mall Santa, relayed the story’s most famous line: “You’ll shoot your eye out, kid.” “This is one of my favorite, favorite Christmas (movies),” said Carpenter, who is also the vice president of the Fremont Civic Theatre. “It’s a tradition at my house. It’s not Christmas unless you sit down and watch it.” That’s why Carpenter decided to bring the story’s theater adaptation to Fremont County. The production’s opening night was Friday in the theater at Washington, which is located at 606 N. Ninth St. in Cañon City. On Dec. 16 and 17, the play will start at 7 p.m., and the final show will be at 2 p.m. Dec. 18. Tickets for the production are available in Cañon City at Absolute

Accounting and City Market and in Florence at the Fox Den. Tickets are priced at $10 for adults and $7 for children 12 years old and younger. The story, which originally was released in a book by Jean Shepherd, was adapted into a film in 1983. In it, Shepherd, who also narrated the film, follows 9-year-old Ralphie Parker as he tries to convince Santa and his family to buy him a “Red Ryder Carbine Action 200-shot Range Model air rifle with a compass in the stock” for Christmas. After seeing Ralphie’s story play out in the movie, writer Philip Grecian decided to make it into a play, featuring 14 characters. In the Fremont Civic Theatre’s production of the play, Carpenter said the cast consists of actors of all ages, starting at 6 years old. “I had an open audition. I probably had 25 kids try to audition,” Carpenter said, adding that in the casting process, she tried to place personalities with the characters. “It’s a great thing for us because it’s hard to cast sometimes.” In getting ready for the play, Carpenter credited Fremont Civic Theatre President Pam Clark and numerous community supporters for

Starting on New Year’s Eve, the theater also is planning to host a

mystery dinner theater and silent auction, called “The Gin Joint.” In January, it’s planning a production of “A Bad Year for Tomatoes.” For more information, call the Fremont Civic Theatre at (719) 2758989 or visit fremontcivictheatre. org.

Republican Central Committee pokes fun, honors retiring Ed Norden Carie Canterbury The Daily Record

It was 23 degrees outside Tuesday evening, but the heat was turned up pretty high when District 3 Commissioner Ed Norden was roasted during the Fremont County Republican Central Committee meeting at Republican Headquarters. The surprise roast was all in good fun and in honor of Norden, who is wrapping up his third and final fouryear term at the end of the year. He chose not to seek a third four-year term and will be replaced by Republican Dwayne McFall who ran unopposed in November’s election. Many of the jokes centered around Norden’s tattoo on his left calf, a large “N” representing the Nebraska Cornhuskers, his favorite football team. “I never saw a tattoo change a person like it did Ed Norden,” said Larry Lasha, a former commissioner and friend of Norden. “He turned into Vanna White — he’d pop and turn and someone would walk by and he’d show that tattoo — he’d be riding his bicycle, have one foot on the pedal and turn the other foot so that people on the side could see it.” Lasha also recalled a trip to Lincoln, Neb., where they attended a football game. “I will tell you, he is really popular in Lincoln, Nebraska, with that

the final time. “Ed has brought so much institutional knowledge, so much professionalism into this office,” she said. “I am not sure if the citizens of Fremont County know the gem they have, and they have had since the day that they put Edward H. Norden into office.” Commissioner Tim Payne also talked about the professionalism Norden brought to the office. “He brought a work ethic, also,” he said. “Commissioner Bell and

I try to copy that work ethic every time we walk into the office.” Norden said that work ethic was learned as a young boy growing up in Kansas where township boards were elected. His father served as chairman of their local township, along with three members. “I watched the most basic grassroots of government at our kitchen table,” he said. “It always intrigued me because the county gave townships a certain amount of money, then they would have monthly meetings to decide how they would spend the money.” Norden talked about his family taking care of themselves on their farm, rather than relying upon the government. “That’s what I grew up with,” he said. “During the last 12 years, I never felt comfortable taking a government paycheck, and that’s why, I suppose, my work ethic was probably one of maybe I didn’t take enough time off, but I will now.” During the evening, Norden was presented with a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition by Dale Anderson, a representative from Rep. Doug Lamborn’s office; a proclamation by Mayor Preston Troutman declaring Dec. 6, 2016 as Edward H. Norden Day; and a Certificate of Appreciation by the Fremont County Republican Central Committee.

“Closed Minds”

I saw it on the news recently: a college professor in a large university taught a class on ethics for many years but decided to discontinue it. The reason he gave was that most of his students come into the class with their minds already made up on moral, ethical and political issues and don’t want to hear any view that opposes their own. The professor stated that normally in classes, opposing views on a subject would be presented and discussion would follow. But now, when a view other than their own is presented, most students will simply “shut down” and not take part in any discussion or debate. He is puzzled and saddened by this attitude which he says has not been typical until recent times. The question is “Why?” Where are our young folks getting this “closed-minded” attitude? The answer may likely be from their parents and/or school teachers! Is our society losing the ability to listen to both sides of an argument and come to a reasonable, objective conclusion? Or are our values now being based more on subjective emotions? Is “My mind is made up - don’t confuse me with the facts” now becoming the norm for our moral and ethical standards? Can we no longer politely consider an opposing view? The wise man said, “He that pleads his cause first seems right, but his neighbor comes and searches him out” (Proverbs 18:17). Can we not disagree agreeably? “Iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend” (ch. 27:17). Are we becoming a people with closed minds?
