In Loving Memory

William Adolph Koch

Theodore J. Roe

Fleeta Baldwin

Aug. 29, 1932 - Dec. 10, 2016 William Adolph Koch of Cañon City went home to be with his beloved Lord at 84 years of age on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2016, after a battle with cancer. William, also known as Bill, Billaby, Dad and Grandpa (Honey), was born on August 29, 1932 to Rev. Bernard Adolph and Frances (“Granny Franny”) Mary Hyde Koch and raised on a farm in Altoona, Kansas. He graduated from Violas, Kansas High School in 1951 and Chanute Junior College in 1953. He married Yula Nadiene William Koch Curtis in 1955 and remained devoted to her until her death. Bill actively served in the U.S. Army from 1953-55, followed by 6 years in the Army Reserve. He was discharged in 1961, proudly receiving the Good Conduct Medal. “Billaby,” as she fondly called him, married Marilyn Ann Burgess Stanley on June 12, 1982. He was employed at Aircraft Mechanics in Colorado Springs and DFC Ceramics in Cañon City as a machinist, retiring in 1990 on disability. Bill loved to spend his time woodworking, tending to his plants, and bee-keeping. He saved and found a purpose for everything and could fix anything. Above all, he dearly loved his family. With that grin we all loved, he would take advantage of any opportunity to proudly tell and retell stories of his childhood with his siblings, of his children and their accomplishments, and of his adored grandchildren. If asked how he was, he would always reply, “Mean and Ornery!”, which changed later in life to: “Sweet and hard to beat!” He especially loved his wife Ann with a special tenderness and doted on his “Queen Bee” from the day they met. Bill spent his final year and a half in this life as a member of the wonderful Skyline Ridge Nursing Home family. He was lovingly cared for by the amazing nurses and other staff of Memory Lane, up until his final days in which they and the nurses of Fremont County Hospice so tenderly attended to his last needs. He is survived by loving wife Marilyn Ann Koch of Cañon City, CO; children Matthew (Sarah) Koch of Cañon City, CO, Beth, (Mike) Ferrari of Yuma, CO, William (Bonnie) Koch II of Pueblo, CO, and daughter-in-law Thelma (Jim) Mueller of Aurora, CO. He loved all his grandchildren; Mary and Jonathan Ferrari; Elizabeth, Rebekah, and Eli Koch; Grace (Brian) DeCaro; Hope, Faith, Charity, and A.J. Mueller; Aimee Hickman and Billy Koch; Christina Lambert; and Zachary and Melanie Stanly, along with numerous great-grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters Maxine Steeves of Chanute, KS, Mable Mitchell (his twin 2 years apart) of Severy, KS, Mary Livingston of Olathe, KS, and Nina (George) Boudreaux of Cantonment, FL, and brother George (Betty) Koch of Wichita, Kan., as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and brothers and sisters-in-law. He is preceded in death by both of his parents, his first wife Yula Nadiene Koch, sons Alan D. Stanley and Mark T. Stanley, and brother Robert Koch. Services will be at Harwood Funeral Home Chapel, 516 N. 10th, Cañon City at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 15, 2016. Arrangements entrusted to Harwood Funeral Home. Online condolences at Harwoodfunerals.com.

July 3, 1952 - Dec. 6, 2016 Theodore John Roe, age 64, departed this life and was raised on eagle’s wings into the kingdom of heaven on Dec. 6, 2016. He was born in Long Beach, Calif., and grew up in Lakewood, Calif. He played French horn for the diplomats Drum and Bugle Corp. for many years. After retiring from Anheuser Busch he moved to Cotopaxi. He joined the Wednesday morning Alley Cats bowling league in Westcliffe. He was a proud Theodore J. Roe American, an avid fisherman and had such a quirky sense of humor! He was the loving husband of Linda Roe, devoted father to Ryan Roe, Reanna Hightower, and Matthew Lord. Beloved Pap to Nolan and Samuel Hightower. Dear Brother to Roxanne Burgh and Jane Richmond. He was preceded in death by his parents Richard and Lois Roe, brother, Rick Roe, and Sister Renee Bozeman. He also leaves behind uncles, aunts, several nieces and nephews and many, many friends! Rest in peace Ted. You are now an Angel in the palm of God’s hand. July 5, 1940 ~ Nov. 27, 2016 Fleeta Rowland Baldwin moved to her eternal home November 27, 2016, and is survived by her son Jeff and daughter-in-law Linda and three grandchildren, True, Kate and Emma, and her sister Jill, husband Jim, and their children, Ramie and Morgan. She was preceded in death by her sister Roine and her brother Jack. Fleeta was born in Glenwood Springs, Colorado to Peggy and Harold “Red” Rowland and grew up in her beloved Aspen. She competed for the high school ski team, graduated valedictorian, and attended Colorado State Fleeta Baldwin University, where she met her husband John and graduated with honors. Shortly after she married John, they moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where Fleeta taught mathematics and raised her son. After John passed away, Fleeta moved to Cañon City, a town she came to love. Throughout her life, she trusted Christ and interceded constantly for others in prayer. She gave generously to pro-life causes, Christian missionaries, and relief organizations. Even after an accident left her paralyzed, she put all her hope in Christ, knowing that we can only be saved by His work on the cross and not our own efforts. Her memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 5, at Cañon Community Baptist Church. Memorial gifts may be sent to Worldview Academy, P.O. Box 2918, Midland, TX 79702. Arrangements are under the care of Holt Family Funeral Home.

In The News Robinson known for her acts of kindness

Jackie Robinson has a unique ministry for her community by remembering those who are going through a tough time. She provides stuffed bears and dolls for the police, sheriff and fire department services to hand out to traumatized children and adults when they arrive on site. Jackie has been doing this since 2002. In 2015, the manager at the Burger King in Cañon City invited Jackie to put a collection box in his store, allowing the community to help Jackie help others. Together, they raised the number to about 1,800 toys to give away to the hurting and destitute. There were so many, Jackie had to set some aside for Toys for Tots. When the sheriff came to pick up the toys in 2015, he had to leave and get a larger vehicle. He came back with a second officer and a couple of youth to help load ... and they still had to make another trip. This year, Jackie has collected more than 2,000 toys. In church, Jackie donates several hours each week by cleaning the church. She arranges the bi-monthly potlucks and clean-ups smoothly and efficiently. In the community, she pet-sits and is quick to provide rides to those in need. “I just do what God asks me to do,” Robinson said. “I’m happy He’s using me.”

She’s often the first point of contact when residents need their roads graded or their snow plowed, serving as the link between crews and citizens of Fremont County. Annette Ortega, office manager for the Fremont County Department of Transportation, was named Employee of Year during Tuesday’s Board of Commissioners meeting. Ortega said she was humbled by the award. “I think that we have a great employer, and we’re surrounded by amazing employees every day,” she said. Ortega has worked for Fremont County for 10 years. She started out working in Planning & Zoning before moving to the Finance Department. She has been the office manager for DOT for nearly seven years. “I enjoy serving the community because you know you’re making a difference,” she said. “I may not be out on the roads or anything, but we do a lot in the office.” Among her duties, Ortega is in charge of tracking the costs of road projects, making sure the county is in compliance with state permits and helping to collect information for grants. She helped the county obtain a large reimbursement grant for flood damage in 2013 and 2015.

Can my loved one stay at home with hospice?

Given the choice, most of us would prefer to be at home when we’re sick. This is no different with a terminal illness. However, many families fear the responsibilities of home care. Hospice lessens the practical burdens on the entire family through a coordinated system of physical, emotional and spiritual care.
