passed away at home, surrounded by her loving family Jan. 27, 2017. Loving wife of John Blatnick. Proud mother of Timothy (Helen) Blatnick. Also survived by her grandchildren, Kristen Partridge, Jeremy Blatnick, Carl Angerman, Abigail Angerman; great-grandson, Silas Angerman; brother and best friend, Bill Beach and numerous nieces and nephews. Born April 24, 1931 to Harvey and Annie (Falgien) Beach in Florence, Colorado, Joy was a lifelong resident of Fremont County. Dedicated to her faith, she was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, Ladies of St. Mary, VFW Ladies Auxiliary #4061 and Southern Colorado Family Joy Lou Blatnick Polka Club. She enjoyed gambling in Cripple Creek, yelling at the television when the Broncos were playing and fishing and camping. She was known for her sense of humor. She loved spending time with all of the children in the family. A beloved wife, mother, grandmother and aunt. Joy was the rock of the family. She always wore a smile for everyone. The world is a better place with her love and many contributions of her life. She will be greatly missed. Donald Eldred Francis June 14, 1929 ~ Jan. 31, 2017 Donald Eldred Francis passed away peacefully Jan. 31, 2017, with family and friends by his side. He was born in Cañon City and attended the University of Chicago, majoring in art. Don was a pilot in the Navy and was awarded the Purple Heart. He hand his family traveled the world while working for the Army and Air Force Exchange Service. He lived in Izmir, Turkey and Poxdorf, Germany, to name a few of the countries he called home. After leaving the Navy, Don worked for the AAFES until Donald Eldred moving back to Colorado in Francis 1978. Don returned to Cañon City in 2006, to spend his remaining years with his second wife, Donna, who he went to high school with and met again at a High School class reunion. He was an adept business owner of two real estate firms and also worked for Colorado National Banks, as Vice President. He is survived by his wife, Donna Francis; two sons, Donald (Martha) Francis Jr., Tad Francis; daughter, Kathe (Todd Johnson) Francis-Johnson; grandchildren, David and Mark Francis, Kaitlyn and Kylie Johnson; step-daughters, Frankie (Gailen) Harrison, Kathi (Steve) Samsel, Gae (Rebel) Snider; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and many friends. Don was preceded in death by his parents, Philip and Edna Francis; sister, Helen Batchelor; first wife, Trudy Ann Francis; and brother, Bud Francis. Don, you are loved by many and a true example of what it truly means to be a leader of men. You will be missed and remembered fondly. Cañon City School District Superintendent: Charter high school would impact curriculum Sara Knuth

At a time when Cañon City High School is planning for a complete overhaul in curriculum, opening a charter high school would limit resources, according to Cañon City School District leaders. During a meeting Tuesday in Mountain View Core Knowledge School’s gym, officials presented those changes to parents, a group that has shown interest in expanding the kindergarten through eighth-grade charter school to a high school. But George Welsh, the superintendent of the Cañon City School District, hoped parents considered something else: “maybe we’ll give this project at the high school a little time.” During the presentation, Bill Summers, the principal of CCHS, and Adam Hartman, the district’s director of instruction, presented information about “Pathways,” the new curriculum that gears students to pursuing studies based on their interests, especially those that could lead to a career. Welsh said opening a new charter high school could mean that fewer resources go to the rest of the district’s students, especially as it moves forward with major changes in curriculum at CCHS. “Creating a small high school option that maybe would have 140 dedicated slots would draw maybe $1 million from what we’re trying to accomplish already at Cañon City High School, with limited funds,” Welsh said. Part of this comes down to the state funding the district would lose if students move to a charter school, which would have relative independence from the district. Mountain View Core Knowledge, Cañon City’s only charter school, has its own governing board that is mostly made up of parents, and Karen Sartori, who is the school’s principal and school administrator. But even with that independence, the school still has to answer to the school district, which is its charter authorizer. For Mountain View, this means that even though the school has relative autonomy and can make the majority of its own decisions, it still has to get approval from the district before making major changes. It also means that the school contributes a small portion of its per-pupil funding to the Cañon City School District, in addition to maintaining contracts with the district for services, such as special education and nutrition. At most, authorizers can require that charters contribute 5 percent of their per-pupil funding to them. Sartori said after budget cuts in 2008, the school district raised the charter school’s contribution from 3.5 percent to 5 percent. “So, it was a pretty big hit on our school at the time,” Sartori said. But Sunny Bolin, a Mountain View parent, said the opposite feels true at the school. She said she feels that the district isn’t paying enough attention to Mountain View. “You’re presenting this high school to us because you want us to be invested in your programs, and I just asking why because it feels like you’re not investing in our kids,” she said.

Cinderella, Princess Aurora, Captain Hook, Belle and the Beast, Ariel and many other Disney favorites will be featured in Cañon City High School’s 27th annual dinner theatre production. Hosted by the Vocal Music Department, this year’s theme is ‘A Disney Dinner Theatre,’ offering dinner and a show Feb. 18-19 at CCHS, 1313 College Ave. The first course will be served at 6:30 p.m., doors will open at 6 p.m. Tickets are $20 each and are available now at the CCHS Activities Office. “We’ve done Disney a couple of different times before,” said Todd Albrecht, CCHS Vocal Music instructor. “People love Disney.” In addition to Encore! and Tiger Ladies presenting different selections from Disney Broadway shows and animated movies, there will be three special medleys, one taking the audience on a tour through Disneyland. “You’ll go to Frontierland and see Woody and Jessie, you’ll go to It’s a Small World and you’ll see Davy Crockett, and Mickey and Minnie will be the host of that,” Albrecht said. “We’ll also do a Disney princess love song medley with all the couples from Disney shows.” New this year, Rapunzel from “Tangled” and Hercules will make their debuts, and Encore! will perform “Let it Go” from “Frozen.” Tiger Ladies will perform a number from Aladdin the Musical and “Fallin’ For Ya” from Disney’s Teen Beach Movie. Many of Disney’s infamous villains will perform a medley, as well, including Ursula, Gaston, Captain Hook, Jafar, and the witch from Snow White. The evening will showcase top-notch costumes and special effects. For dinner, guests will be entertained by the cast before they receive each course during the traditional spaghetti banquet, including fresh bread and homemade brownies. The characters will mingle with the crowd during dinner, and they’ll be available for photos.

Ray Hodges’ “Cañon’s Free Lil Pantry” located at 1116 Phay Ave. was set up to help people with grocery items in between paychecks, but he had no idea the project would be so embraced by the community. “It’s been a really awesome project so far,” he said. “The response from the community has been incredible.” Hodges and his wife, Lisa Rhode, have done quite a bit of outreach to the homeless the last 10 years, but the small, colorful food pantry in front of their home offers a practical way for them to help people every day. The pantry was set up Dec. 7, stocked with $30 to $40 of food, provided by the couple. Hodges had expected to have to add $50 worth of food each week, but since the community has caught on to the idea, “Need some, take some; have some, leave some,” he hasn’t had to buy anything to keep the pantry stocked. “I honestly thought that it would be me putting food in here, and then the community that needed it would come get it,” Hodges said. “I didn’t realize it would be the community coming together and keeping it full.” The idea came about when his wife saw one of the “free little

libraries” in town and wondered if they could do something similar with food. The pantry was easy to make since Hodges builds portable storage sheds for a living. Hodges said the pantry is not intended to fully provide for families’ needs or replace benefits they may already receive, but it is a supplement. “The end of the month, it gets a lot more used,” he said. “It’ll go a week or so after the first without being used at all, because people get their food stamps or assistance, and then we’ll see it start picking up and it gets pretty heavily used.” Anyone wishing to donate food may drop it off at the pantry. The couple has found boxes of food items donated at a time. “We’ll stock the pantry and take the leftovers and put them in the basement where it can stay cool,” Hodges said. “We really wanted it more for food items, but we were getting a lot of hygiene products, so we added another little box to it.” A bottom cupboard contains items from toothbrushes and toothpaste to soap and new kitchen towels.

Hodges tries to not make eye contact with people at the pantry in order to respect their privacy, but he recently did talk to a young woman who had a little boy who called out to him. “When she turned around, I could see she had been crying,” he said about the young mother. “She told me her story and said she didn’t know how she was going to make it without this, she said she hadn’t eaten meat in weeks.” Hodges said he and his wife were not well off when they met 10 years ago, which inspired them to help others. “I lived in a car for two weeks before I met my wife, trying to figure out how I was going to support four children, and she was homeless when she was a child, living in a cemetery,” he said. “This is something pretty near and dear to our hearts.” Hodges posted a video on Cañon’s Free Lil Pantry’s Facebook page explaining the project in December, and he since has heard from people across the country and even the Netherlands. Since December, three other free pantries have been added in neighborhoods across Cañon City and one in Rockvale. “There is a group in Athens, Georgia, getting ready to put up 10 of them because of ours right here in our little town,” he said. There’s a place in town where people can go to get warm gloves and hats on a cold winter day — or night — at no charge. Fremont County 4-H members recently installed a 4-H Warming Board located in front of the County Administration Building located at 615 Macon Ave., where anyone in need may take something to help stay warm. Members of the 4-H Council and the Cloverbuds put the board together, adding new hats, mittens, gloves and earmuffs that were contributed by an anonymous donor. “We built this warmth board because we wanted to spread warmth throughout the community for our community service project,” said Keirstyn Gowdy, 14. “This is our third time filling it.” The board was located at 1116 Phay Ave., in conjunction with the Cañon’s Free Lil Pantry that offers food at no charge, for two weeks. About 40 items were taken during the time it was at the Phay location, and since moving it to the Fremont County Administration Building, it has been restocked twice. Fremont County 4-H Extension Agent Verla Noakes said other organizations have invited the group to temporarily house the board at their locations, but for now, it will remain at 615 Macon Ave. To contribute toward the project, or for more information, email verla.noakes@fremontco. com.

Cañon City School District offers health app

With a new app that counts calories and allows students to rate their meals, the Cañon City School District is catching up with its latest generation of students. “It’s just really bringing us into that next generation of students that are, you know, glued to their phones all the time anyway,” said Heather Williams, the district’s director of nutrition services. “That’s where all their information is. That’s where they want their information to be.” The app, which officially launched Tuesday, includes the daily breakfast and lunch menus of every school in the district. It also has features that range from interactive nutrition information to a system that allows parents to digitally deposit money into their students’ accounts. The app, called Web Menus, took two months for the district to develop, Williams said. And, she added, the new system allows parents, students and nutrition staff to engage more with the meals served at school. “They can actually just go in just directly from our website or their mobile phone if they’re not sitting in front of their computer and have all that information at their fingertips,” Williams said, adding that the nutrition department also added a layer

of interactivity to its main website. For students who have to follow strict guidelines in their diets, for instance, a new website and app feature provides a way for parents and district health technicians to calculate how many carbs are in entire meals. After parents or health techs digitally select all of the items that make up a students’ meal, the website calculates the total number of carbs. For the health techs, who are responsible for working with students with strict diets, the app provides an easier way to access carb information, Williams said. “Prior to this, it’s not even really been possible for parents or students to have that information in front of them without having to ask someone to get it,” Williams said. “So now they don’t have to do that.” Williams also looks at the app as a way to attract parents who send lunches to school with their students. “Hopefully, we’ll get those parents to trust us, that they have that access now,” she said. “Because they’re unsure of what’s in our items at school, they just pack a lunch for their student.” As the department continues to develop the app, it also will include the ingredients that can be found in each meal. Right now, she added, the app does not include information about allergens, but Williams said that is a goal for the nutrition department. “Old Time Religion?” Remember the old song, “Gimmie that old time religion - it’s good enough for me?” What is that “old time religion?” Let me suggest it is the gospel (good news or glad tidings) of Christ that Jesus ordered His apostles to go into all the world and preach (Mark 16:15-16). It is the gospel of faith, repentance and baptism that was first preached by Peter and the other apostles on the Day of Pentecost in Acts 2 and was obeyed by 3,000 penitent believers who repented, were baptized, saved and added to the church. It’s the gospel that Paul warned that nobody: not even an angel from heaven should change into a message other than the gospel first preached (Galatians 1:8-9). It’s the word that Jesus warned must not be “added to or taken from” (Revelation 22:18-19). What is that “old time religion”? It is the sum total of the message of Christianity written by the inspired New Testament writers. Peter wrote “His divine power has granted to us everything that pertains to live and godliness through the knowledge of Him who called us” (2 Peter 1:3). We don’t need church manuals or creed books with the traditions of men or revelations by socalled “latter-day prophets.” Sadly, that “old time religion” has been added to and taken from by so many that we now have a multitude of “religions” all claiming to teach “the gospel of Christ.” How can one identify that “old time religion? One must carefully compare what any “religion” teaches and practices with what the Bible says! (more next time).
