Karen Lee Swanson Hart Oct. 6, 1942 - March 4, 2017 Passed away March 4, 2017, at the age of 74. She was born Oct. 6, 1942, in Moline, Ill., to Edward and Dorothy Swanson. She lived and attended school in Woodhull, Ill., except her junior year of high school spent in Phoenix, AZ. She graduated from Alwood High School. She attended Augustana College in Rock Island, IL and completed a bachelor’s degree with a teaching certification. She taught high school English for two years in Ottawa, IL and then pursued a Master’s degree in library science. In Ottawa she began her lifelong love of traveling by spending a summer touring Europe, at which time her father passed. After visiting Colorado often on prior family vacations, she was determined to spend her life there. In 1967 she moved to Colorado Springs, CO and began teaching at Wasson High School and continued grad school at Denver University. In Colorado Springs she became an avid skier and was a member of the Snow Jets ski club and was part of the Four Seasons young adult group where she met her husband to be Tom. They were married August 30, 1970 just days after receiving a Master’s degree in library science from D.U. She became a librarian at Wasson High School until the summer of 1972 when she and Tom moved to Breckenridge and built their first house with the help of family and friends while living in tents and the garage. Just days before the school term started they moved into their new house and she began her job as librarian at the Summit County Public Library. Their first son Dan was born in 1973 while in Breckenridge. In the spring of 1974 they moved to Cañon City on the famous Blossom Festival weekend. The next few years would be her only time not working at her beloved library career. She kept very busy with the birth of surprise twins, Aaron and Allison, in 1976. Now she had three children under
three years old. She helped form a babysitting coop for young mothers and was active in the Lutheran church as the Sunday school superintendent for several years, Karen Hart among other things including her active role in the Lutheran World Relief hunger program. When the twins became school age she began working for the Colorado State Library System as a children’s program consultant for southeastern Colorado where she traveled extensively, meeting many kindred spirits in the smalltown librarians she worked with along the way. In 1984, she was overjoyed to become the librarian at Cañon City High School where she worked tirelessly from 1984 to 1995, seeing her three kids come and go during the late 1980s through the mid1990s during which time she was an avid CCHS soccer supporter. Her wanderlust, with the help of her beloved uncle Warren, ensured life was not all work and homemaking and allowed the family to travel extensively during summers and holidays. They traveled to all but one of the lower 48 states while the children were growing up even retracing part of the Oregon trail on one trip. She and Tom, with members of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, made three mission trips to a sponsor congregation in the mountains of northern Guatemala, often requiring miles of hiking to get to remote villages. Her last professional years were spent at what is now Colorado State University-Pueblo, where she was the government documents librarian, working through a major remodel of the library building. She ended her career on a high when her dream of being a librarian on the
University of Pittsburg’s Semester at Sea program came true in the fall of 2000. She was the college cruise ship librarian for 600 students and faculty on a five-month circumnavigation of the globe leaving Vancouver with ports of call in Japan, China, Vietnam, Malaysia, India, Africa, Brazil, Cuba, and ending in New Orleans. In Cuba, she attended a presentation sponsored and headlined by Fidel Castro himself, who talked to all 600 students and faculty for five hours. After retiring she and her family continued their travels in Peru, Spain, New Zealand/Australia, China, Nepal, Bhutan, Isreal, and Sweden where she visited the villages and church of her Swedish grandparents. Her greatest hobby was scrapbooking where her creative talent flourished, showcased in the many stunning scrapbooks about family and travels. She also loved to present travelogues of her travels for organizations and retirement homes when she wasn’t volunteering as an adult reading literacy tutor. Karen was preceded in death by brother, Larry; her parents and grandparents. She is survived by husband Tom; sons, Daniel (Suzannah) Hart and Aaron (Beth) Hart; daughter, Allison Hart; step-daughter Jenny (Larry) Hill; step-son Greg (Susan) Stein; step-grandchildren Seth Davidson, Sara Stein and Olivia Stein and nephew Brad (Kristina) Swanson; and niece, Amie (Will) Jensen (Swanson). A memorial service will be held at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Cañon City, CO at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 10, 2017. In lieu of flowers please make checks payable to ELCA World Hunger. her passage of life through death on March 4, 2017. She was 96 years old. Her contest with “old age” was fierce, but she stood her ground to the end! The family wants to thank Hildebrand Nursing Home and Sangre de Cristo Hospice for the excellent care they gave to Mary Jane, making this final life journey as comfortable as it could be. Mary Jane Birdsong Mary Jane was born Mary Jane Plate in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In 1944, she married John Birdsong, a gentlemanly, handsome young Iowa farm boy, who was at the time working in Cedar Rapids at Collins Radio. The task was to create a ground to air communications system so much needed in the struggles of WWII. Earlier in his life, John had traveled to Colorado and become totally taken with its beauty. As the war came to its close, John and Mary Jane moved with their baby daughter to Cañon City. This small Rocky Mountain community was to become the soil for many deep and lifelong friendships. Mary Jane was able and creative in her life as wife, homemaker, mother and occasional supplementer of the family funds. As she told the story, one day she dressed in her best clothes and went from shop to shop along Main Street seeking employment. Her skills as stenographer and secretary eventually landed her a job with Ralph Wann at the Royal Gorge Bridge Company. 1951 saw John accept a position at Sandia National Labs in Albuquerque; another big change for the Iowa city girl, this time, to the deserts of New Mexico. Again she created her home, made new friends and was active in scouts and school activities. She was also able once again to be a part of her college sorority, as it had a chapter at UNM in Albuquerque. Throughout the years in New Mexico, John and Mary Jane would return often to Cañon City, the place they loved best, to spend time with friends and drive the mountain roads. After John retired in 1983, they sold their Albuquerque home and resettled here in Cañon City. All through her life, Mary Jane kept up her love of swimming, walking and gathering with friends. She loved to laugh and go out dancing with her husband. She could be quite silly at times, even just a bit outrageous! All in all, Mary Jane was a woman of her times, giving her whole life into her marriage, family and friendships. She will be greatly missed by her family and would have been missed by her friends, except that in her long life she had outlived them all! Live on in glory, Mary Jane, and thank you. Arrangements are under the care of Holt Family Funeral Home. Online condolences @ www.holtfamilyfuneralhomes. com

“Old Time Church Leaders” In the early church, local congregations were led by a group of men known as elders, shepherds or bishops. The term “elder” (PRESBUTEROS) has reference to age: an older man. The term “shepherd” (POIMEN) is also translated “pastor” and refers to one who tended the flock, that is, the congregation. The term “bishop” (EPISKOPOS) is also translated “overseer” and is one who watches closely over members of the local church. The terms are used interchangeably and all three are found both in Acts 20 and also in 1 Peter 5. In the early church, these leaders were always men; there was always a plurality (never singular) and the congregation they served was always “autonomous:” independent and self-governing. In some cases, these leaders were appointed by an apostle from among the men of a local congregation (Acts 14:21-22) and with the approval of the local congregation. The qualifications for an elder are very specific: these requirements are listed in 1 Timothy 3 and also in Titus 1. It’s important to note that being an elder was an area of humble, loving spiritual service and not just a title to be worn. The church was not to be governed by a single “dictator:” one man named Diotrephes tried to do just that and was soundly condemned by an apostle (3 John 1:9-10). In Acts 20:28-31, the apostle Paul warned the elders from the church at Ephesus that power-hungry “wolves” would arise from among themselves and ravage the “flock.” Sadly, both the scriptures and early church history verify that the predictions of the inspired apostle soon came true.
