Sunny Day Rescue Mission aims to rehab and re-home horses PENROSE — Most come with emotional or physical scars, a few can barely walk themselves into a horse trailer, and all come rescued from a certain death sentence. The horses at Sunny Day Rescue are spared from slaughter and taken to a place where they are tenderly cared for, fully rehabilitated and loved. The operation was started by County Manager Sunny Bryant and her husband, Chris Bryant, at their home in Fremont County Manager Sunny Penrose. Bryant interacts with a rescue horse, Since opening in Spirit, at her home in Penrose February 2015, the couple has taken in a total of 26 horses, most of which were purchased from feedlots. The mission is to rescue, rehab and re-home the unwanted horses.“We got to doing more research and saw that there are about 150,000 horses a year that are shipped either to Mexico or Canada from the United States and then processed for either human consumption or whatever else they use with them,” Sunny Bryant said. “That was pretty alarming to us, and the more we did research, the more I wanted to try to do something about it.” The first horse they bought, Leno, now 15, had been on a slaughter lot in Denver. They ended up keeping him for themselves, along with the second horse they purchased, Tank, who is now 12. Tank had been severely abused and remains skittish, but he has a close, trusting relationship with Bryant. One of the horses Bryant rescued, Rhonie, had to be euthanized because of her severe arthritis.“We tried everything, giving her supplements, really trying to see if there was anything we could do,” Bryant said. “The vet said she was in pain and was not going to get better; she was in horrible pain.” The significant expense of the horse’s care and removal of her remains didn’t matter to Bryant, because it was what needed to be done. “She was one that the person who had her, instead of doing what was right, took her to an auction and was sold to a kill buyer,” Bryant said. “More than likely, she wouldn’t have made it because she wasn’t really strong enough to defend herself against others.” Bryant sat with Rhonie in her last minutes, until she drew her last breath.“At least she knew compassion and respect instead of having a horrible ending,” she said. Bryant said what she finds most rewarding in her work is seeing the transformation in the horses from the time she brings them to the rescue until the time they are moved to their new homes. “We don’t do it for any reason other than wanting to save a few lives,” she said. “It is very rewarding when you see those horses that you don’t think will make it or they have an issue to where you don’t think they can be rehabbed, and then they turn out to be very good horses. It’s pretty amazing.” All horses go through a 30-day quarantine when they arrive at Sunny Day Rescue. Horses are typically at the rescue from two months to a year, at which time the horses’ hooves and teeth are cared for and they are treated by a veterinarian and farrier. They are healthy and sound before going to a new home. Prospective buyers must go through an application process, including a home visit and check with their veterinarian, before being purchased. “We make sure the facility is good,” Bryant said. “We really do try to make sure it’s a good fit,” she said of the match with the horse and the prospective buyers. Sunny Day Rescue is not yet a nonprofit organization. It currently is about 90 percent self-funded. To contact Sunny Day Rescue, or to learn how to make a donation of time, cash, supplies or feed, contact Bryant through the Sunny Day Rescue Facebook page.

Jo Ann Draman Dec. 6, 1925 ~ Feb. 15, 2017

In the peaceful morning hours of February 15, 2017, Jo Ann went to join her one and only love, Jack. She had met Jack Draman when he and a friend invited themselves to her 15th birthday party. Thereafter, the couple shared nearly 75 years of an amazing life’s journey. Jo Ann, the second child of Ambrose William and Agnes Dale (Turner) Nolan, was born on a farm near Stuart, Iowa. She shared her early years with six siblings, her parents and two grandmothers. She had the privilege of Jo Ann Draman attending rural school through the 8th grade and rooming in town, with two grandmothers until she graduated from Stuart High School. Jack and Jo Ann began life together with little more than their hopes, love and ambitions. The young family grew from two to six as four little girls were born. Jo Ann was an incredibly capable planner and manager who took pride in her family and home. Good grades, proper conduct, cleanliness and hard work were basic requirements for the girls, not praiseworthy fluff. Jo Ann tirelessly drove her daughters to 4-H meetings, county and state fairs, band and vocal concerts, sporting events and

numerous other activities. She helped them make all their own clothes and encouraged anything else they wanted to try in life. On Leap Year Day 1980, Jack and Jo Ann held an auction to sell all of the equipment they had acquired during 35 years of farming. They packed their personal belongings, drove to Colorado and arrived in Canon City on St. Patrick’s Day. They lived in Canon City for the remainder of their lives. Jo Ann contributed her friendship and talents to the Women’s Club, and became a state officer. She was an Elkette, working to support Jack who was a very active Elk member and officer. A successful business woman, Jo Ann trained many young employees to know the oxygen and home health care supply business. Jo Ann leaves to mourn, her four daughters, the Honorable Carlynn Grupp, her children, Brad, Greg, Jeff and Larinda and their spouses, grandchildren and great grandchildren; Daughter, Mary Katherine McBroom, her son Brian, daughter Anna, and their spouses and children; Daughter, Janet Louise Draman, her daughters Alyshia and Rachel, and their spouses; Daughter Dorothy Jean Pobst, her husband, Don, son Dan Higgins, daughter Heather, her spouse, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She will also be greatly missed by two siblings, Julia Dill (Ernie) and Paul Nolan, and the many friends she has enjoyed. A Celebration of Life will be held at Wilson Funeral Home on March 17, 2017, at 11 a.m. Online condolences at www.holtfamilyfuneralhomes.com. To Jo Ann: Your loved ones say to you, as you always said to us: “Good Night, sleep tight, and God bless.”

“Old Time gospel Preaching” First-century sermons were not about how to win friends and influence people. They did not include promises of health, wealth and a trouble-free life. They weren’t ear-tickling side-shows about how to make you feel good about yourself. They didn’t beg and plead for money from their listeners. What they were about was how to be saved and then how to live your life after you became a Christian. Gospel sermons contained facts, commands and promises: the facts of the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 15:1-4). Commands of the gospel were to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God ((John 8:24); be willing to repent of sins (Luke 13:3), publicly confess Christ (Matthew 10:32); be baptized (Acts 2:38); and then to live your life “faithful unto death” (Revelation 2:10). A sermon that omits any of these commands cannot qualify as a “gospel sermon.” Included in the many promises of the gospel were forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:38), salvation (Mark 16:16) a more abundant life (John 10:10) and all spiritual blessing which are to be found only in Christ (Ephesians 1:3). To receive these blessings we must be “in Christ.” We are not “in Christ” until we “put on” Christ and Paul wrote that this happens when we are baptized “into” Christ (Galatians 3:27). The gospel message then was not difficult to understand but called for a radical change of life: an about-face! That’s the way it was then and that’s the way it should be now. Say friend, how long has it been since you heard an old-time gospel sermon? Rio Evans is the preacher for the Cañon City Church of Christ, 1718 Franklin Avenue Office phone: 719-275-9696.
