Loraine Ohlson Short, born August 28, 1927, passed away February 5, 2017 due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease. Loraine was an educator, wife, mother, community advocate, animal lover, baker, cook and so much more. She was born in Kiowa to Helen Banks Ohlson and Carl E. Ohlson, on the family ranch -- which has remained in the family for over a century. Loraine attended grades 1-12 at the community school in Loraine Short Kiowa. A strong farm girl, she loved to ride her horse, Teddy, bareback and was the loving caretaker for all manner of critters throughout her life. She graduated from the University of Northern Colorado in 1949 with a B.S in Health Education and set out to be a Physical Education & English teacher. Her first teaching job was at Cañon City High School where her beauty and athleticism caught the eye of many lads, including Paul Short. Loraine left Cañon after two years and taught in Colorado Springs at East Junior High. Paul traveled frequently and persistently to Colorado Springs to help Loraine “grade papers” and one day Loraine accepted his proposal for marriage. Loraine married Paul in a small ceremony on Aug. 20, 1952 in Colorado Springs. Like many frugal brides of that era, she made her own dress and veil and most of her trousseau. Paul and Loraine embarked on a fairy tale honeymoon to the islands of Hawaii on the SS Lurline. The lovebirds returned home on a new TWA airplane with four engines! Paul’s extravagant gesture paid off --they would have been married 65 years this summer. Loraine set about being the best mother possible, and for many years was ‘home room mother’ to all three of her children simultaneously. Fortunate for all, she was a renowned bread and pastry baker and excellent cook. Her gift of service extended to the entire community throughout her life...Cub Scout Leader, Girl Scout Leader, Methodist Youth Fellowship Leader, and founder of one of the first food banks and thrift stores, The Zacchaeus House. She and her good friend Mary Harbor worked to start Meals on Wheels in Cañon City. Loraine was an early advocate and volunteer in the Cañon Literary Center, where Paul carried on her work when the dementia diminished her ability to share her love for lifelong learning. She was a 50-year member of the PEO Chapter DK, where she championed the cause of literacy, and food security for one and all, especially children. Loraine studied continually, combing three daily newspapers for important information. She asked for a “Radar Range”, the first microwave and soon after offered classes is this new and exciting method of cooking. She loved to be active and Jazzercize was a favorite—she and Paul even went on a Jazzercise cruise. Active down to her last week of life, Loraine and Paul hiked, backpacked and traveled the world, usually with a beloved dog trotting along. She leaves her husband of nearly 65 years, Paul; daughters, Laurie Ward (Tim) of Evergreen, Victoria Strohmeyer Smalley (Gary), of Steamboat Springs, son, Paul Bradley, Aurora; nieces, nephews, stepgrand and great-grandchildren and numerous granddogs and grand-cats. Loraine’s sister-in-law, Nina Ohlson of Aurora and her brother- in -law, Robert Short (Virginia), of Oregon also are living. Loraine was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Wendell. A Memorial and Life Celebration will be at the United Methodist Church Annex, Friday, March 31, 2017, at 10 a.m., with a reception provided by the Methodist Church women and the sisterhood of the PEO Chapter DK. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers are requested to The Humane Society of Fremont County or your favored charity.

Randall Lee Henderson, age 66, passed away peacefully in his own home March 25, 2017, after a lifelong struggle with chronic illness. Randy was loved by everyone who knew him. He was the second child born to Dorothy Mae (Dahlgren) Henderson and Donald Faye Henderson, both deceased. He is survived by his wife, Karen Atencio-Henderson; his beloved son, Jacob R. Henderson, of Castle Rock; sister, Kristie Lynette (Jim) Lindley; brother, Donald Ray Henderson, both of Canon City. He was also privileged to include in his family four stepchildren, David (Nikki) Teigen, Dianne (Joseph) Roh, Paul (Nicole) Atencio, Greg (Kerrie) Atencio; eight grandchildren, affectionately known as the “Elite 8”, Nick, Mitchell, Mykal, Lucas, Dante, Megan, Hannah, and Andrew. Randall will be deeply missed by his niece, Nikki (Jim) Gleeson; nephews, Jeffrey Henderson, Joshua Lindley and two great nephews, Dylan and Drew. Randy’s career in the Colorado Department of Corrections spanned from November, 1973 until November, 1999. He started as a Correctional Officer at the Colorado Territorial Correctional Facility, affectionately known by many as Old Max. On April 1, 1976, Randy was promoted to a Correctional Sergeant in programs. This included implementation and management of a wide range of activities. While this may not seem particularly significant for 2017, this was a dramatic change in thinking in 1976. Randy was reallocated to Correctional Lieutenant on July 1, 1979.

This reallocation came as a direct result of his efforts to expand and improve the programs at Old Max. He was then promoted to Administra- Randall tive OfHenderson ficer III on October 15, 1984 and as such, was part of the implementation team that opened the Centennial Correctional Facility (CCF) in 1980. Due to his assignment at CTCF and CCF, he became very instrumental in the Ramos v. Lamm conditions of confinement lawsuit that was filed against the department in the late 1970s. This lawsuit dramatically changed the way corrections in Colorado were “done”. In fact, the opening of Centennial was part of the resolution of that lawsuit. Randy was then promoted to a Program Administrator I, and spent the next several years working as the Legal Access Coordinator for the Department. He spent most of his waking hours working on the response to Ramos v. Lamm. He was called as an expert witness countless times during the trial. His expertise, correctional experience and judgment were invaluable to the defense of this case and the “workability” of the resolutions ordered by the court. Randy was promoted to Correctional Superintendent I (Deputy Warden) at the Buena Vista Correctional Facility and also served at

this rank at the Colorado Women’s Correctional Facility. He was promoted to Correctional Superintendent II on August 1, 1990 at Shadow Mountain Correctional Facility. He also served as warden at the Canon Minimum Centers and the Centennial Correctional Facility. Randy also worked on the design and implementation of the San Carlos Correctional Facility. Randy was also very involved in the Colorado Correctional Association. He worked with the organization for several years and served as the president of that organization in 1984. Randy was honored by the Colorado Criminal Justice Association (Colorado Correctional Association) as the recipient of the Harry C. Tinsley Award in 1999. Randy was well known throughout the department for his sense of integrity, honesty (sometimes blatantly so), and his fairness. Randy worked his way up the chain of command, from Officer to Warden, but never forgot that competent staff is the State’s greatest resource. Randy also had the innate ability to “take command”, while enlisting support, allegiance, and dedication of all the people who worked for him. Randy was respected for his concept of justice, equality, and efficiency; these values continued to influence the way inmates have been managed. Randy will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. A private family Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the care of Holt Family Funeral Home. Online condolences at www.holtfamilyfuneralhomes.com.

Alice Clarissa Egan Hanson Alice Clarissa Egan Hanson died peacefully on March 22, 2017 with her family by her side. Allie had a fabulous husband, Jay, and six children, Charlene, Cindy, Michael, Clarissa, Janie, and John, oldest to youngest. She had eleven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and a Alice Hanson sixth great-grandchild is on the way. She loved her family and friends deeply and felt blessed and grateful for her sobriety of over forty years .The intensity of her love for all of us will be our guiding light. Allie was born in Des Moines, Iowa on August 14, 1930 to John and Clarissa Egan. She loved her Papa, Mama, and her older sister Marthe, as much as any human can love another, and we smile thinking of her reunion with them. Allie attended Grinnell College, Iowa, and graduated from the University of Minnesota, where she was a member of Delta Gamma. Allie was also a member of P.E.O, and a direct descendent of one of its founders. She taught first grade in the St. Paul, Minnesota city school system for five years before becoming a full-time mother, a job she handled with wit, passion, and intense love. Life’s journey took her from St. Paul to Windom, Minnesota, to Freehold, New Jersey, to Cañon City, Colorado.

It is in Cañon City that Allie found her Shangri-La 30 years ago. Her love of the Colorado sky and great open spaces, the view of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains from her home, and the incredible people of Cañon City, all made her last thirty years joyful. Cañon City and Shell Lake, Wisconsin, her grandparents’ “camp” on a lake, shall remain holy ground in our hearts because these two places are so much of who she was. Allie was an artist, moving from sculpturing, to painting and then to quilting when she moved to Cañon City. Her paintings and quilts are treasured family heirlooms. Her church Circle Beth were her fellow artisans and dear friends. Allie and Jay have refinished hundreds of pieces of furniture, have re-caned half a million chairs, and are the best counted cross-stitchers in the world. Allie had the rather eccentric hobby of collecting humorous obituaries, as she was a junkie of fine literature. With that said, one of Allie’s last wishes was to please have patience with Jay, as he has slowed a bit, and for heaven’s sake keep him off ladders and the roof! A memorial service shall be held at the United Presbyterian Church, 701 Macon Avenue, Cañon City, on Friday, March 31 at 11 a.m. Her ashes shall be interred this summer at Shell Lake, Wisconsin, next to the remains of many people she loved. Please consider gifts in her memory to the United Presbyterian Church, Cañon City Colorado.

“Old Time Gospel Conversion” The Lord’s church that began in Acts 2 with over 3,000 members was unique in that thousands of Jews from all nations had come to Jerusalem to celebrate the annual Day of Pentecost. It was on that special day that God chose to miraculously empower the 12 apostles with the ability to speak in foreign languages (which they previously had not known). A large crowd had gathered and Peter used the opportunity to preach the gospel of a crucified, buried and resurrected Jesus Christ and also to place the blame for His death squarely on the ones who had called for Jesus to be crucified. Cut to the heart by the evidence that Jesus was the Messiah and the realization of their guilt, they said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brethren, what shall we do? Peter said to them, Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:37-38). Reading on, we see that 3,000 souls were baptized, saved and added to the church that day. Moreover, the new Christians “continued steadfastly in the apostles teaching, to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer” (2:42). As we will see next time, there was something else unique about the early church: those who lived in or around Jerusalem were willing to share with those who had traveled long distances to the Feast of Pentecost - but had not planned to stay for an extended period of time.
