In Loving Memory Gale Ann Esch

Albert Adams

Richard Lee Blattner

Gale Ann Esch departed this life on May 1, 2017, while surrounded by her family. Gale was born June 21, 1943, to George and Thelma Polster of Colorado Springs. She met Thomas Esch, the love of her life and they were married in 1970. Gale was gifted with an extraordinary talent and loved to draw with colored pencils; wildlife, cartoons and caricatures. Her drawings were sought by many and especially adored by her children who always wanted her to draw them more. Gale spent many of her Gale Esch married years residing in the mountain town of Alma, Colorado, a gorgeous place near the base of Hoosier Pass. She was very passionate in her faith with the Lord Jesus Christ our Savior! She loved her family and served them beyond words. She touched so many people and was involved in so many lives. She loved to spend time with her family on jeep outings, viewing wildlife and exploring God’s beauty of the Colorado Mountains. She had a special gift gardening flowers and plants, they seemed to have conversation with her. She also loved feeding many different types of birds, especially humming birds; was a fan of gold panning and she found her share. She loved and spent countless hours preparing full meals for friends and neighbors in need as well as all kinds of baked goodies, always having them on hand for those who often stopped to visit. She always enjoyed staying very busy by keeping her surroundings neat, clean & tidy. Gale worked for Whitco Jeep Top Supply Company and while residing in Alma, CO., worked as a bookkeeper for Gately Motors and served as Town Clerk. Gale is survived by her husband of 47 years, Tom Esch; her daughter Christina Woodward, her two sons, Spencer Esch and Marcus (Kimberly) Woodward, sisters, Patricia (Gene) Hale, Judy Vogt and Carol Triggs. She was preceded in death by her parents and her granddaughter LaNae’ Woodward. One of Gale’s final unselfish acts of kindness was to donate her body to the Colorado State Anatomical Board at the University of Colorado School of Medicine to better medical research and cure. (At Gale’s request, no services will be held.)

Castle Craft Window Service celebrates anniversary Owner Mark Castle of Castle Craft Window Service has over 20 years experience with his father’s training, and has worked in Canon City for 10 years. Castle Craft Window Service has always been a family business. Since his father John Castle started the business in Florida in the 1970's. Mark started “Castle Clean Window Wash” over 10 years ago in Florida and moving to Colorado as a small window cleaning business. Shortly after Mark’s father passed away in June of 2016, Mark was ready to expand to a full service window business, offering a wide range of services and products, from window washing, window replacement and blinds to Sun Setter Awnings. Mark was ready to take over the family business after working in the oil fields for 6 years, while growing his small window cleaning business on the side. Being a recently married family man, it just felt fitting to be able to come home each night to his wife, Jaime and family. Now he’s able to be home at night and work at a place of his own and love what he does for a living. Mr. Castle has lived in Fremont County for 10 years, but visited each Summer for 18 years before that, working as a professional raft guide. After a while, he loved the area so much, he packed up and moved here and made Canon City his permanent home. Castle Craft is an authorized dealer, bonded and insured, and offers everything you could need for residential window care: Residential window replacement, window treatments (blinds and shades, etc..), window cleaning, Sun Setter awnings -(Both motorized and manual retractable awnings), exteri-

Nonprofit aims to help feed the community Custer County Community Sharing Center, a partner agency of Share and Care, is a nonprofit organization with a mission to alleviate hunger in our community. We supply food products to nearly 1,000 clients per month, including adults, seniors and children from Custer, Fremont and Huerfano counties. Many of our clients can’t always afford the food they need. These are real people -- from our senior citizens, veterans, working families with children, friends and acquaintances, who

often must choose between paying food or paying for necessities, such as utilities and medical care. Our mission is to provide good stewardship through which the generosity of this community can feed their neighbors who lack consistent access to enough food for an active and healthy lifestyle. We operate totally on donations of food and monetary contributions. No monies go to administrative costs as 100 percent of the workers are volunteers. All

donations are tax deductible and every dollar helps. The Sharing Center can stretch a dollar into an average of eight meals for someone who needs it. All donations can be mailed to the CCC Sharing Center, P.O. Box 1592, Westcliffe, CO 81252. The Sharing Center is open from noon to 5 p.m. Fridays at 120 N. Third St. To donate nonperishable foods or to volunteer, call 719-7833303 or 719-783-2994.

“Inclusive or Exclusive”

“Inclusive” is defined as “not excluding any section of society or any party involved in something.” Jesus was inclusive: He said, “Come to me, all who are weary and heavyladen, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). In the parable of the marriage feast, the king said to his servants, “Go therefore to the main highways, and as many as you find there, invite to the wedding feast” (Matthew 22:9). Jesus commanded His apostles, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation” (Mark 16:15). Jesus invites all to come to Him: He wants all mankind to hear the gospel and be saved. “Exclusive” is defined as “excluding or not admitting other things.” Jesus was also exclusive: He calls all men, but He also said, “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me” (Matthew 11:29). Those who would come to Jesus must be willing to be yoked with Him and learn from Him. In the parable of the marriage feast, all were invited but not all came prepared. Christ said, “Many are called, but few are chosen” (Matthew 22:18). The gospel must be preached to all men: “He that believes and is baptized shall be saved, but he that disbelieves shall be condemned” (Mark 16:16). “God does not wish that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9). Was Jesus inclusive or exclusive? Yes: He invites all men to come, but those who refuse to obey Him will be “excluded.” Salvation is available for all - but it is also conditional upon obedient faith. Page 22 • CAÑON CITY SHOPPER • May 16, 2017 Arkansas Riverwalk Trail Extension Project The Cañon City Area Recreation and Park District (CCRD) is working in conjunction with the City of Florence and the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) to create a plan to address safe pedestrian travel between Mackenzie Avenue and Florence River Park on the far east side of Florence. In order to correct the record, we felt it necessary to respond to some of the recently published articles and letters in the local newspapers. • The 2015 Eastern Fremont County Trails, Open Space and River Corridor Master Plan was a 15 month project facilitated by a professional design firm. The master plan was a community-wide process which involved multiple public meetings, user group meetings and many technical work group meetings. This plan was approved by the City of Cañon City, the City of Florence, the CCRD and Fremont County. Agricultural interests were represented. • The master plan identifies several route options with respect to a trail being constructed from Mackenzie Avenue eastward to Florence River Park. • As identified in this master plan, a preferred route is the route which continues the trail along the old ATSF Railroad grade – a portion of which is owned by the Fremont Sanitation District and is therefore publicly owned land. An additional portion is part of an existing public utility easement. The CCRD Board of Directors has not rendered a decision on a final route. • The extension of the Arkansas Riverwalk Trail could provide safe pedestrian travel between the City of Cañon City and the City of Florence. • CDOT regional transportation funding in the amount of $250,000 has been committed for a project to study, design and engineer a safe route which connects Cañon City and Florence for all types of pedestrian travel including walking, biking and equestrian. Match funding has been committed by the City of Florence ($20,000) and the CCRD ($30,000) for this project. • The planning process, which will involve an independent professional design / engineering firm, is expected to examine all possible routes as part of the due diligence with this project. • In an attempt to secure a Connect Initiative grant from Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) that could have provided construction funding for the trail extension in the years 2018 - 2020, we requested and received letters of support and/or funding commitments from the City of Florence, the City of Cañon City, Fremont Sanitation District, Cañon City Noon Lions Club, a private land owner and a private donor. • We requested similar support from Fremont County, and we were denied. It is important to plan and to work toward a prosperous future for our community by striving for solutions and capturing opportunities while respecting our agricultural heritage. We will continue work on this important public project and be responsive to the entire community. Our board meetings take place on the second Tuesday of every month, and are open to the public. We welcome anyone who wishes to engage in this issue to contact any of the CCRD board members or Executive Director, Jim Hoar Respectfully, CCRD Board Members: Ken Burger, Paul Trentzsch, Kalem Lenard, Scott Johnson & Jim Johnson
