Alpha Jean Coleman
Alpha Jean (Adams) Coleman passed away peacefully in
her sleep on April 22, 2017, at the Skyline Ridge Nursing home in Cañon City. Alpha Jean “Jeannie” Adams was born Jan. 20, 1927, in Rocky Ford to Lea and Celesta (Kidder) Adams. The Adams family moved to Westcliffe when Jeannie was four years old. Alpha Jean, as she was known to her classmates, went to the Willow School and then graduated from Custer County High School in 1944. Alpha Jean was a waitress at Min’s Cafe during her junior and Alpha Coleman senior years of high school. While putting herself through the Pueblo Business College and earning a degree in bookkeeping, Alpha Jean worked as a secretary at the Colorado State Hospital and she worked and lived at the Pueblo Y.W.C.A. Upon graduation, she was employed as a clerk typist at the Custer County Social Services office from the fall of 1945 to January of 1947. Alpha Jean Adams and Stanley Coleman were married at the Hope Lutheran Church on Feb. 9, 1947, and lived and ranched in Westcliffe. In 1951, Jeannie and Stanley purchased a dairy farm in Cañon City and then the Red Cañon Dairy processing plant. Jeannie worked side by side with her husband milking the herd of approximately 100 cows, processing milk and other dairy products, and doing the bookkeeping for the dairy and farm. She also had four children and a large vegetable garden that she harvested and canned. Jeannie was the president of the Harrison Elementary PTA and was instrumental in getting the school lunch program set up at Harrison. She was also the president of the Altrusa Club and of the Home Demonstration Club in Cañon City. In 1963, the Coleman family moved back to Westcliffe. Jeannie Coleman was the manager at the Wet Mountain Valley Coop for eight years and won paid vacations to Acapulco, Mexico and then to Hawaii along with other awards from Farmland Industries for being one of the most profitable coops in Colorado. They bought a 360 acre ranch on the corner of Kettle and Schoolfield, and raised hay and Angus cattle. Jeannie again worked side by side her husband on the ranch. Many times as Stanley was busy with various community club meetings and activities, she was the one to stay home to rake and bale the hay or care for the animals. Stanley and Jeannie were divorced in 1986, and he remarried. The divorce was devastating to Jeannie even up to her death, in her mind and her heart, he was still her husband. Jeannie began in home caretaking for several elderly clients in the valley. She then cared for her uncle in West Virginia for two years as he battled cancer.. She returned to Westcliffe and had various jobs such as bookkeeper at the Mountain Cliffe Motel at the ski resort, a substitute janitor at the Custer County School, a dispatcher at the Custer County Sheriff’s office, a cashier and maid at the Antler’s Motel, at the Lunch Box Café, a bookkeeper at Custer County Bank, and a shelf stocker at the Westcliffe Super Market. Jeannie worked hard all of her life, but her main focus was on her children and grandchildren. She was always there to babysit, paint a room, or move a grandchild to a new apartment, be a shopping buddy or to just be someone to talk to during happy times or sad ones. She had an infectious laugh and a quick wit. People loved to tease her just to see what come back comment she would make so that they could both laugh and go on through their day with a smile on their face. Alpha Jean Coleman is survived by her two sisters, Eva Colgate of Cañon City, CO, and Shirley Randolph of Boise, Idaho. She has four children: Linda (Gerald) Elliott; Dr. Gary Coleman; Peggy (Al) Lepper all of Westcliffe, Co; and Dr. Dale (Dr. Elaine) Coleman of Notasulga AL. Also surviving are grandchildren: David (Tammy) Elliott of Westcliffe; Robert (Molly) Elliott of Van Nuys, CA; Brenda (late husband Zack) Schultz of Siloam Springs, AR; Tami (Aaron) Spatziani of Thornton, CO; Eric (Angie) Rafferty of Westcliffe CO; Shane Rafferty of Koneohe, HI; Wendy Rafferty of Springfield, IL; Alex Lepper of Pueblo, CO; and Patty Lepper of Orgeon. Jeannie also has 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. The Funeral Services will be Saturday, April 29, 2017, at 2 p.m., at the Valley Bible Church in Silver Cliff with interment at the Rosita Cemetery.

Woman warns of Brady’s ‘grandkid’ scam A phone call from a grandchild claiming they are in jail and needing money to get out is the narrative of a telephone scam that has made its way to Cañon City. Ruth Sanchez, 84, of Cañon City said she received a call Monday morning by someone pretending to be her grandson. Sanchez said when she answered the phone, the person started by saying, “Grandma, it’s me.” “They sounded just like him, but I, at one point, asked if they were scamming me,” she said. Sanchez said the person who called her Monday claiming to be her grandson told her that he and some friends went to the Dominican Republic and were in a car accident. “He said they were in an accident and the cops there found marijuana on them, so arrested them,” she said. She said the person claiming to be her grandson said she needed to send money or else he would stay in jail. Sanchez said they were asking for $900. A different person then got on the phone to give her directions on how to send money to help her grandson. She said she felt uncomfortable abut the phone call and suspected it was a scam, but she also said the person sounded a lot like her grandson and she was afraid that what she was being told was true. Sanchez did go to Wal-Mart on Monday to send a moneygram but was stopped from sending any money by a worker at the store. “I was in shock, thinking he was in jail,” she said, adding that she just wants people to know about what happened to her, so they don’t fall victim to the scam. Cpl. John Sabatino, public information officer, with the Cañon City Police Department, said the “grandkid in jail scam is pretty common.” “As far as I know, no one’s lost money to the scam,” Sabatino said.

Remove spent flower spikes to promote rebloom. Drought tolerant once established, surviving on almost total neglect. Attractive to hummingbird, bees and butterflies. A short-lived perennial so leave some flower spikes intact at the end of the season for re-seeding purposes.
CAROL MACKIE DAPHNE

This tree can stand even the harshest winters and is very drought tolerant. Will reward you with regular watering.
CEDAR MULCH
3 cu.ft. bag $1999
Cedar mulch is the best mulch because of it’s ability to retain moisture, keep roots cool in Summer and warm in winter, prevents weeds and will not blow away or wash away in heavy rain. Because cedar degrades slowly, it lasts a long time. Don’t forget it looks great and smells terrific!

PCC inducts four into Fremont Hall of Fame By Carie Canterbury The Daily Record During the 10th annual Fremont Hall of Fame banquet Friday at the Abbey Events Center, four more people were added to the impressive list of individuals whose civic commitments have contributed greatly to the improvement of their community. Rich Burleson, Judy Lohnes, and Charles Wolfers, and his late wife, Earlene Wolfers, were inducted into the Fremont Hall of Fame. Burleson has received many professional achievement awards, including Florence High School Teacher of the Year in 1974 and 1978; RE-2 School District Employee of the year in 2001; Rural Philanthropy Days organizer; Presenter at State Middle School Conference; Florence Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the year in 1983 and 2004; and the Colorado Association of Middle School Principals nominee for the National Principal Award in 2001. During the banquet Friday, he talked about “working on the dash,” the time between the day one is born and the day when he dies. “The dash is what we’re all about,” Burleson said. “The people I’ve worked with and some of the students that I’ve met throughout the years all have added to my dash, and I hope that I have contributed to theirs, as well.” Lohnes is recognized statewide as one of the exceptional leaders in local government councils. She was instrumental in opening the

Mary ‘Jo’ (Eckert) Conway Mary “Jo” (Eckert) Conway was born at home April 26, 1926 to Eugene and Lou Marie (Willis) Eckert in Phelps County, Missouri. In her early life, Jo and her younger sister grew up on “the farm” first in Missouri, then moving to Pittsfield, IL where she lived until she graduated high school. As a young woman, Jo worked different jobs including as a sole nailer in a shoe factory producing boots for the military during World War II. She also loved dancing on the weekends and once said “There was a time I thought I would die if I didn’t get to go dancing!” She would eventually move to Colorado and settle in Colorado Springs. There she worked as a waitress in a small diner and met Winfred R. Dodd, a bus driver for the city. They eventually married and raised five children together. Dancing went by the wayside as Jo devoted herself to being a mother and homemaker always baking cookies or cupcakes for someone’s class party, helping with school fundraisers, and cooking for large family gatherings. She was always able to find a way to stretch and disguise leftovers so they were never really leftovers to the people eating them! Winfred died in December, 1969.
As a widowed mother of 3 young children remaining at home, Jo moved to Canon City for its small Mary Conway town safety in 1972. Though she worked different jobs, she was always best known for working the meat/deli counter at Canon Market. Even though she left there to retire in the early 1990’s, people remembered her and would always say hello for decades to come. She met Robert “Bob” Conway, a pilot who was flying scenic helicopter rides over the Royal Gorge in 1988. One night after dinner, he took her for her first ever flight flying over Canon City and Skyline Drive as well as the Royal Gorge. They married Nov. 28, 1989. They spent winters traveling in their motorhome, making new and lasting friendships and spent many summers working at the Royal Gorge Bridge and Buckskin Joes/ Scenic Railway and were invited back for one of the last train rides before the Railway closed perma-
nently. They were held with deep affection by those who worked with them. Robert preceded Jo in death Nov. 29, 2012. Just as she was born at home, Jo passed away at her home April 25, 2017, with family by her side. She was preceded in death by her husbands, parents, and sister, Hazel L. Evans, as well as her son Ronald Dodd of Aurora. She is survived by her sons Robert (Linda) Dodd, and Hal (Amy) Dodd and daughters Clara (Ron) Zenisky and Jacque (Mark) Eldred along with ten grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. She was a warm and loving wife, mother, and grandmother and will be dearly missed but always loved and remembered by her family. We would like to thank Jo’s granddaughter, Carrie Gross, for her loving devotion and staying with her day and night so Jo was able to remain in the comfort of her own home, and Fremont Regional Hospice for their caring help and advice anytime we needed it. Funeral arrangements through Swan-Law Funeral Home, Colorado Springs, CO. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Fremont Regional Hospice.

“Something’s Not Right!”
Sometimes that warning pops up on my computer screen. It popped up in my brain when I read about elementary students in California being taught how to pray Muslim style. Some of us may remember two historic decisions over a half-century ago: Engel v. Vitale and Abington School District v. Schempp. Afterward on June 17, 1963, the Supreme Court declared school-sponsored prayer and Bible readings unconstitutional. Now it is reported that San Diego school districts are requiring elementary students to take lessons on Islam, including praying to Allah - as Muslims do. So: students aren’t allowed to study Christianity or to pray to God but are required to study Islam and pray to Allah? Something’s not right! Just in case someone may not know, the stated goal of Islam is world domination: to have every nation and individual under Sharia law - which is basically the principles of Islam as taught by their prophet Muhammed and recorded in the Koran. Some may not realize that Islam is not in a big hurry to achieve its’ goal: if it can be done incrementally and peaceably this is acceptable and even preferable. If that doesn’t work then violence becomes a satisfactory way to advance their cause. Teaching our children that Islam is a religion of peace is an important step in their plan for a Muslim world (if you’re not sure about that I suggest you read the Koran). Christians are to take the gospel of Christ into all the world: Jesus told His disciples to go and make disciples of all the nations - but without violence!
