In Loving Memory Josephine Blankenship Josephine (Jo) Blankenship, 76, of Cañon City, passed away Friday, May 5, 2017, in Woodland, California. She was born July 15, 1940, in Estepona on the Costa del Sol in southern Spain, the daughter of Frank Lopez and Gabriela Rubio Lopez. With her parents and sister, Jo immigrated to northern California in 1948. She went to school in Woodland, California and graduated from Woodland High School with the class of 1960. On October 10, 1961 she was united in marriage to Jim Blankenship in Elko, Nevada. Jo and Jim Josephine ‘Jo’ were blessed with two sons, Blankenship Dan and Jim, both born in Sacramento, California. In 1974, Jo and her family moved to Cañon City, a place she truly loved and always called her home. In addition to being a mom and home maker, Jo worked at Drive-Thru Photo and Lasting Impressions. Jo was also a volunteer, serving the community for many years at Loaves and Fishes and the Tourist Cabin. The most important things in Jo’s life were the people she knew and loved, especially her grandchildren. In the summers, she and her friends were regulars at the Concerts in the Park and Cowboy Church in Veterans Park. On many Wednesdays, you could find Jo and Jim in Cripple Creek, where they had many friends. It was difficult to not be happy when being with Jo, because she was almost always smiling and laughing. Her family, many friends and acquaintances will all miss her dearly. She is survived by her husband, Jim Blankenship, of Cañon City; two children, Dan (Cindy) Blankenship of Stillwater, Oklahoma, Jim (Jennifer) Blankenship, of Louisville, Colorado; five grandchildren, Curtis (Hannah) Blankenship, Eric Blankenship, Ben Blankenship, Andrew Blankenship, Owen Blankenship; sister, Anna (Don) Northam; a brother; beloved aunt, Deloras Tabarez; uncle, Salvador Rubio; niece, Leann Castaneda all of Woodland, California, and her best friend, Bo Cruz, of Cañon City. She was preceded in death by her parents; very close aunts and uncles, Mary and Pete Espinosa, Antoinette and Ralph Perez, Anna and John Garin, Isabell and Rey Munoz and Joe Tabarez; and nephew, Darrell Northam. Visitation, 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, May 15, Wilson Funeral Home. Rodney “Rod” Sandner
Jean Louise Englund (née Robillard) passed away early in the morning on Monday, May 15, 2017, after an extremely brief battle with cancer. As in her life, she was surrounded by many loving family members and friends throughout her battle. Her faith in God gave her great strength, and her penchant for seeing the good in any situation led her to look forward to seeing those in heaven she dearly missed rather than dwelling on the life she would be losing on Earth. Born to Louis “Tony” and Mildred “Millie” (LaComb) Robillard on January 6, 1944, Jean was raised in Kenosha. She attended St. Mary’s and St. Joseph’s Catholic schools while growing up. Shortly after graduating Jean Englund from high school, Jean married Danny Englund and embarked on a life of travel, living in Louisiana, Germany, and Colorado. Though they later divorced, Jean was able to travel extensively throughout Europe and the United States while married, and was always up for a new adventure. A few of her last trips were to Hawaii with her lifelong friend, Angela Gemignani, the road trip she took with her brother Jim to move back to Kenosha in May of 2016, and trips to Green Bay with her family to pick apples, watch her great niece and nephew play at Bay Beach Park, and visit Lambeau Field. Jean lived in picturesque Cañon City for nearly three decades. She worked at Fremont National Bank before discovering her passion for libraries and joining the staff of the Cañon City Public Library. Jean loved living in Colorado, and particularly enjoyed the friends she made there as well as the gorgeous scenery. As much as she loved it there, she missed the family and friends (who were like family) she has in Kenosha. Upon retirement, Jean moved home to be closer to them. Jean was fortunate to have remained active with her favorite activities up to the very end. She was lucky to enjoy many hobbies throughout her life, and was a natural talent who excelled at many things. She was an avid bowler for many years, a devoted volunteer for many organizations, and an exceptional needlepoint artist. Jean was a devout Catholic and a fervent Packers fan, whose passionate support of the team knew no equal (until they traded Brett Favre -- she needed some time to forgive them for that). She is survived by her brother, James “Jim” (Jan) Robillard; her niece, Amanda (Joseph Wroblewski) Robillard and nephew, Eric (Rebecca Gunderson) Robillard; her great-niece, Adelyn Robillard and great-nephews, James Robillard, Maxwell Wroblewski, and Alexander “Red” Wroblewski; many exceptionally close cousins; and her lifelong friends “The Animals”. Jean was preceded in death by her father, Tony and her mother, Millie, as well as her brother, Charles “Charlie” Robillard. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 19, 2017. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 6 p.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, 7300-39th Avenue. A private entombment of her cremated remains will be held in All Saints Mausoleum in Pleasant Prairie at a later date. Rodney “Rod” Sandner passed away April 25, 2017, in the comfort of his home in Cañon City. He was born July 10, 1945, in Sun Valley, Idaho, where his father “Al” was stationed during World War II. In December 1945, at six months of age, he moved with his parents to Cañon City. Rod graduated from Cañon City High School in 1964. He briefly left Cañon City to Rodney Sandner attend college on a football scholarship at Ft. Lewis College in Durango, CO. After attending college, Rod returned home in 1967 to work with his parents at the family business, Royal Gorge Meat Packing Company. Rod met the love of his life, Mary Graham, at Murphy’s Poor Boy Drive-In. Rod and Mary dated while she attended Colorado State University. In 1973, on the 3rd day of February, the couple joined hands in marriage at the First United Methodist Church in Cañon City. Rod and Mary were blessed with two children, Miranda and Russell. The four of them traveled all over the United States during yearly spring breaks, making family memories. Rod became sole owner of Royal Gorge Meat Packing Company in 1999 and continued to run the business until 2005, when he retired and leased the business to Alpine Meat Shop. The summer after Rod retired, he began working at the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park, where he worked approximately eight seasons. He was a member of the Cañon City Jaycess for 15 years and was a loyal member of the Royal Gorge Lions since 1987. Rod was a life member of the local Elks Lodge #610 and was also an active member in the Royal Gorge Veterans Motor Car Club of America (VMCCA) for 25 years. He is survived by his wife, Mary Sandner, of Cañon City; daughter, Miranda Sandner (Ty Webb), of Florence, CO; son, Russell Sandner, of Ft. Collins, CO; aunt, Dixie Fontecchio, of Emeryville, CA; sisterin-law, Kristina Graham-Webb (Sean); brother-inlaw, Nicholas James; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Rod was preceded in death by his parents, Al and Tensie Sandner; uncles, Frank, Fritz and Eddie Sandner, Horton Stewart; aunt, Kay Giess and mother-inlaw, Patricia Grant. Rod never knew a stranger. He will be deeply missed by family, close friends, business associates, co-workers, acquaintances, and Nurse Dolly, his fur baby. Memorial service, 2 p.m. Thursday, June 8, First United Methodist Church, 801 Main St., Cañon City. A gathering will follow at the Four-Mile Community Club located at East Main and Steinmeier Ave., also in Cañon City. Susan M. Dessimoz Susan M. Dessimoz, age 73, passed away at her home in Cañon City on March 30, 2017. Susan was born on September 24, 1943 in Chicago, Illinois to Rene and Mary (Finnegan) Dessimoz. She was a 1961 graduate of Resurrection High School. She devoted her life to helping and serving others. After a long and fulfilling 30 year career with the United States Postal Service, beginning in Des Plaines, IL, she retired as a Postmaster in Florence in 2009. She continued to work as a volunteer at CASA (Court Appointed
Special Advocates) and at St. Michael’s Catholic Church. Susan was a loyal friend, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, grandmother and cousin. She was a lover of travel, Susan M. Dessimoz the outdoors, books and films. She was an accomplished baker and
cook and enjoyed playing cards and Mahjong with friends. Susan is survived by her two daughters, Barbara (Joshua) Barnes and Kristine Kazanchy, her grandson, Matthew (Rachel White) Williams, granddaughter, Talia Kazanchy, great grandsons (2), siblings, Michael (Mary) Dessimoz, Richard (Carolyn) Dessimoz, Christine (Roger) Lindh and her many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins. Rita Margaret (Wolff) Benzmiller was born on July 28, 1940, in rural Minnesota. Upon graduating with a degree in Medical Technology, she went to work in Duluth, where she met and married James “Doc” Benzmiller. They moved to Colorado where Rita promptly enrolled Rita Benzmiller in cooking school at the Broadmoor. She went on to become a spectacular cook who fed everyone who entered her home. Not only was Rita a talented cook, she was a wonderful musician. Throughout her life, she was an organist, pianist and choir member. Many churches, schools and venues were blessed with her talents. Rita was always ready to accompany willing singers and instrumentalists in whatever genre they preferred. Her house was always filled with joyful music. Upon leaving her medical technology career, Rita and Doc opened Rita’s Boutique on Main Street. A woman who welcomed all in her store and home, she was called Rita by everyone, including her own children. Over the years, she shared her home with several people who were in need at the time. Rita loved and nurtured all of us. We are all better people because she was in our lives. Rita is preceded in death by her husband Doc. She is survived by her four children, Theresa (Stephen) Sheehy, Gregory (Nancy), Phillip, and James (Tracie Lea); five grandchildren, James Sheehy, Sonya, Elizabeth, Vincent, and Hannah Benzmiller; one great-grandchild, Baylor; numerous extended family members and many friends. Royal Gorge Camping offers new way to enjoy scenery, create memories Carie Canterbury The Daily Record Camping no longer has to include sleeping on a cold, hard ground, pitching a tent and being completely severed from the social media pipeline. New this season, Royal Gorge Camping offers glamping — or glamour camping — tents and luxury cabins complete with modern amenities, outdoor fireplaces, cable TV and unlimited Wi-Fi and more. Andy Neinas, owner and operator of Echo Canyon River Expeditions and 8 Mile Bar & Grill, is set to open Royal Gorge Camping at 45044 W. U.S. 50 on Monday. There are nine, one- and two-bedroom luxury cabins and four glamping tents with expansive views of the Sangre de Cristo mountains and private outdoor space. The cabins have passthrough fireplaces that may be enjoyed from the indoor living room and the outdoor, private patio area, and later this summer, some of the cabins will have private, outdoor hot tubs. The cabins also feature fully-equipped kitchens, private parking and contemporary furnishings. “The glamping tents are unbelievably popular,” Neinas said. “It is a tent with full linen service and amenities.” The glamping tents are 14 by 16 feet with a six-foot deck off the front, as well as an outdoor space and private firepit. The double cabins are 800-square feet, with 400-square feet of outdoor living space, and the singles are 600-square feet with 400-square feet exterior living space. The resort provides a home base for exploring regional adventures, such as the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park and Royal Gorge Route Railroad. Neinas is working with other local adventure

Sherry DelVecchio Cox Sherry DelVecchio Cox, 57, of Cañon City passed away May 9, 2017, after a sudden illness. She was born Dec. 17, 1959, to Hugh and Mildred (Hale) Richardson in Baltimore, MD. She lived in Japan briefly as a child before moving to Colorado. Sherry Sherry Cox loved taking care of her home and family. She was a wonderful cook and baker and loved old country music, which she would sing as she made the family’s favorite meals. When she wasn’t busy in the kitchen, she might find time to sneak off to Cripple Creek for a little relaxation.
Above all she loved her grandkids and spent as much time as she could with them, playing and of course, feeding them. If you really knew Sherry, you knew that she LOVED her two little dogs almost more than life itself and she spoiled them more than anyone. “Organized Religion?”
Some folks don’t go to church because they think it is too organized, formalized or ritualized. To some extent, I can relate to that. Jesus got in trouble with the Jewish leaders because He didn’t observe all their customs and traditions. Most religious groups share some similarities like church buildings with signs and paved parking lots for cars outside and with pulpits, pews and hymnals on the inside. Having spent some time in “mission work” in West Africa, I can tell you that conveniences like these were not present in most areas where we worked. It wasn’t that the people there wouldn’t like these comforts - they simply weren’t available because they were so poor. That’s the way it would have been with the early church. If you had been a Christian in the first century, you would have found the church meeting on the first day of the week wherever possible or permitted: in a synagogue or other public place or in someone’s home, most likely. They came together to remember Jesus’ death by observing the Lord’s Supper (Acts 20:7), to sing songs and hymns and spiritual songs (Ephesians 5:19), to pray, hear God’s word taught and have fellowship with other saints (Acts 2:42). They realized that the church wasn’t a building: it was the saved who came together to worship God in spirit and in truth (John 4:24). Jesus promised to build his church (Matthew 16:18). He shed His blood for it (Acts 20:28). “Going to church” isn’t about pomp or man-made rituals - it should be to worship God and thus be spiritually renewed.
