Cañon City Trolley service through town begins Carie Canterbury The Daily Record Beginning Tuesday, the new Cañon City Trolley will make its way through town four days a week, offering people a lift to shopping and eating establishments and other stops along the way. The pilot program will run May 30 through Sept. 2. Dave and Lynda Lambert of Cañon Signature Mortgage purchased the 23-passenger trolley that was used for weddings in Estes Park, and they now lease it to Fremont County Transit, which is operated through the Golden Age Center. “The goal of this is to be able to transport visitors through Cañon City without them having to deal with our parking issues downtown,” said Jim Wiles, executive director of the Golden Age Center. “If this works out the way we have it planned, we will be able to bring people from hotels and bring them down to shopping along the route.” The trolley also will be available for locals who need a ride. The route initially will run from the Royal Gorge Route Railroad parking lot near Veterans Park to Main Street, where it then will travel to 15th Street and transition into Fremont Drive, then travel to the Best Western behind IHOP and turn around and do the same route in reverse. No signs are posted at this point, but anyone needing a ride is asked to flag down the trolley for it to stop. When stops are later designated, signs will be installed. The trolley likely will make stops/ pickups at Walmart, the Winery at Holy Cross Abbey and hotels and businesses along the route. A stop at the Shops at Fourmile Creek at Justice Center Road and U.S. 50 and also at Village Inn may be added. Wiles said consumer demand ultimately will dictate the stops. To begin, hours will be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. The route from one end to the other is expected to be about half an hour. As the program gets going, hours may change and Saturday service may be added.
Carie Canterbury / Daily Record
Jim Wiles, executive director of the Golden Age Center, left, and Dave and Lynda Lambert of Cañon Signature Mortgage, pose with the new Cañon City Trolley that will begin a route through town Tuesday. In the beginning, the fare will be a suggested donation of $2, but a system, like a punch card, likely will be established for people who make several stops along the route. Drivers will not be able to make change. Drivers are all volunteers who have their commercial driver’s licenses. The program is recruiting more volunteer drivers who would like to participate in the project. “I am hoping that merchants along the way will find it to be beneficial enough to where they can help support it financially,” Wiles said. CDOT helps with funding for the transit program, but the organization is unable to help with the trolley because it does not have a lift, so additional financial support is imperative. If the program is successful this summer, Wiles would like to add a second
trolley next year and eventually include service to the Royal Gorge area, as well as a trolley designated for the Florence downtown. Wiles said he appreciates the support of the Lamberts who have made the program possible. “Having a dream doesn’t help if you don’t have the whole package — they made that happen,” Wiles said. “I appreciate very much their interest and their efforts.” Dave Lambert said being on Main Street, they see a lot of people walking. “We see so many people walking — young and old — walking clear to Safeway and Walmart,” he said. “No one sees it unless you’re on Main, and we see a lot of foot traffic. Our main goal is for tourists, but it’s also here to help somebody in need to travel.” The estimated cost to operate the
trolley for the season is $16,000, which covers gas, maintenance and insurance. In an effort to keep fares low for passengers, Wiles is looking for businesses interested in becoming financial supporters. Individuals with a CDL who would like to volunteer as a driver may call Wiles at 719-275-5177 or email him at 1director@ccgac.com. Individuals in need of door-to-door service, or those in need of an ADA accessible ride, also may call the same number or visit www. fremontcountytransit.com. Businesses interested in having advertising placed on the trolley, or individuals interested in renting the trolley for a special event after hours, during the weekend or after the season, may call Lambert at 719-275-2999. To view a video of the trolley and learn more, visit http://bit.ly/2rUyTcQ.

Every camper will receive a camp T-shirt, daily take-home Bible readings and a collector’s pin. closing program, where youth will showcase their skills. This year’s theme is “Go the Distance,” and each evening will feature a new key point. “We used to do VBS for many, many years, and we realized we started losing the boys,” said Cass McClaugherty, director of Children’s Ministry and event organizer. “Boys don’t usually like to do crafts, not the older ones, but all kids are into sports these days — this incorporates kids, shows them Christ, lets them have fun and meets them where they’re at.” The curriculum is provided by UW Sports Ministry. Register online at www.efreechurch.org or call the church office at 719-275-6867. Preregistration allows organizers to get the kids’ T-shirts ahead of time. First Fridays Jazz Downtown kicks off June 2 First Fridays Jazz Downtown kicks off from 6:30-8 p.m. June 2 at Cara Fisher Square, located between the Cañon City Library and Fremont Center for the Arts at Fifth Street and Macon Avenue. The event is free and open to the public. The 2017 concert series is dedicated in memory of D. Welch, founder of First Fridays Jazz Downtown. This summer’s lineup includes Mo’ Mungus on June 2; New Vintage Jazz on July 7; and Wasabi on Aug. 4. The performer for the Sept. 1 show still has yet to be finalized. Patrons are invited to bring a chair or blanket for seating and enjoy dinner and shopping downtown before or after the event. Mo’ Mungus plays “rocksteady” reggae -— a very special old-school reggae which existed for 18 months between 1966 and 1968. Many aficionados of Jamaican reggae music consider the rocksteady period as the “Golden Age of Jamaican Music.” Mo’ Mungus brings back the songs and sound of this era,- along with earlier
music from the 60’s ska period and post-Rocksteady reggae from the early 70’s. This six piece band of veteran musicians has garnered much positive attention along the Front Range having performed from nightclubs to outdoor festivals and opening for International Reggae artists such as Third World, the Isrealites and Roots Radics. Mo’ Mungus has played numerous times in Cañon City and looks forward again to seeing old friends and making new ones. They recently released their third CD called Big Sound featuring all original compositions based on Rocksteady, Reggae, Ska and Mo’ Mungus’ own unique danceable sound. Music lovers of all ages will appreciate Mo’ Mungus and be tapping their feet to their infectious sound. Mo’ Mungus is on Facebook at https:// www.facebook.com/MoMungus. Sponsors for this concert series include Art Welch, Keith and Jean Hovland, Angela Bellantoni, Dr. Ron and Sandy Smith, Fremont Center for the Arts, and former mayor Tony Greer.

Mo’ Mungus will perform during the First Fridays Jazz Downtown kickoff event from 6:30-8 p.m. June 2 at Cara Fisher Square.
Safety tips for boating on Arkansas River as spring runoff brings high water Warm spring days bring wildflowers, baby critters and snowmelt in the high country. This means runoff filling the Arkansas River and pushing water flows to levels that make it difficult for boating. Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s Andrew Maddox, river ranger supervisor at the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area (AHRA), offers important tips for safely enjoying the runoff and the rapids the high water creates. The first thing to do before launching a kayak or raft in the Arkansas, Maddox said, is to check the water flows and match the levels with your boating ability. If you just got your kayak for Christmas and are not proficient at a combat roll, or uprighting yourself if you flip over, then you might want to postpone your trip. Another important tip is to always boat with a partner. Maddox highly recommends wearing a Personal Flotation Device (PFD), or “life jacket” as they are commonly known, when going boating. A PFD is recommended even when you are simply fishing or spending time near the river. Wearing a helmet is a responsible idea. too. “High water can be a very exciting and fun time to be on the water and
many experienced boaters wait eagerly for this time of year,” Maddox said. “Things can go wrong quickly, though, especially when boaters are not prepared or don’t have the required skills.” Boaters encounter everything from roaring Class IV and V rapids to gentler Class II and III stretches of water, which are ideal for the lessexperienced boaters. “Boaters need to research the current conditions,” Maddox said. “And they shouldn’t hesitate to contact a commercial outfitter to take them down the river if they are at all concerned.” This is important information for the thousands who annually challenge the Arkansas’ 152 mild-towild miles from Leadville, through Browns Canyon National Monument and the Royal Gorge, down to Pueblo on the edge of Colorado’s plains. Safety is always a priority when recreating within the AHRA. If you are not familiar with the Arkansas River or current conditions, please contact the AHRA Visitor Center in Salida at 719-539-7289, or call a local river outfitter. ‑ Staff Reports

“The New Sunday?”
I read it in a newspaper recently: it seems some religious groups that typically meet to worship on Sundays are now making Wednesdays “the new Sunday.” The main reason given for this is that many folks are just too busy on week-ends to fit “church” into their busy schedules, so these are hoping that the same people who can’t find time to worship God on Sundays will be able to make it on Wednesday evenings. Now, I have nothing against meeting on Wednesday evening (or any other evening!) for Bible study and prayer (our congregation does). However, making Wednesday “the new Sunday” makes me wonder “what happened to the Lord’s Day?” Jesus was raised from the dead on Sunday, the first day of the week (Matthew 28:1). The church began on the Day of Pentecost, which was on the first day of the week. First-century disciples gathered on the first day of the week to worship and remember the Lord’s death (Acts 20:7) and have been doing so ever since. It seems to me that the problem isn’t just that some folks are too busy on Sunday: the real problem is that they have their priorities all wrong. Jesus said, “Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things (food, clothing and shelter) shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33). I understand that some folks may have to work on Sundays (that’s one reason we have a Sunday evening service). It’s becoming all too obvious that our society isn’t seeking God first. To make Wednesday “the new Sunday” is just more evidence.
