Arkansas River levels on the rise with melting snowpack By Sarah Matott The Daily Record With rising temperatures, this year’s snowpack is melting and causing the level of the Arkansas River to also rise. On Monday, the Arkansas River in the areas of Cañon City and Parkdale was measured at about 3,770 cubic feet per second. Co-owner of Raft Masters Will Colon said one cubic foot is about the size of a basketball. He said 3,770 basketballs set up in a straight line would be equivalent to the amount of water that is flowing by per second. He also explained that one cubic foot is about 8 gallons, which would be equal to about 300,000 gallons of water flowing by per second. Currently, because of the high levels, the Royal Gorge section of the river is closed for all commercial companies.
The Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area, which is the regulating body for rafting and kayaking companies down the river, doesn’t allow companies to go out on this section of the Arkansas River when it reaches a certain level. Colon said, even though the Royal Gorge is closed, there are still plenty of other sections of the river that are perfect for anyone to raft right now. “This is just a fun time, there’s lots of whitewater and the (water) temperature is great,” he said. Colon said the water rising is something that happens every year, but everyone should be safe when getting in the river. “In my opinion, nobody should be in the river without a life jacket,” he said, adding that anyone wanting to raft the river right now should go with a commercial company who has trained staff. Rob White, park manager for the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation
Area, said the same thing regarding a life jacket, and that if a person is an inexperienced boater then they should go with a commercial company. “If you are inexperienced, this is a good time to go because of the whitewater,” he said, emphasizing though that this isn’t the time of the year for anyone to go tubing on their own. According to the safety guide from the headwaters recreation area, water levels can change flow levels and increase the rating of a rapid, but whitewater boating “has risks at all ratings and levels.” The guide stated that everyone should wear a flotation device and a helmet while on the river. For more information about the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area, including water levels, visit cpw.state.co.us/placestogo/parks / ArkansasHeadwatersRecreationArea.

A Wish Come True: Fremont County businesses partner for Pennsylvania boy’s trip to Colorado By Carie Canterbury The Daily Record Five-year-old Patrick Mace enjoys learning about dinosaurs and paleontology by watching documentaries, but he got some hands-on learning when he visited the Royal Gorge Dinosaur Experience on Monday as part of his Make-A-Wish trip to Colorado. Patrick and his parents, Brentyn and Denise Mace, traveled from Pennsylvania to fulfill his wish to learn more about dinosaurs during his Wish Day. His younger sister stayed home with family so Patrick could be the star of his own show. “This has been an amazing experience because there is so much he (typically) can’t do,” Denise Mace said. “That he ‘can’ do all of this, it’s incredible.” When the Make-A-Wish Foundation learned abut Patrick’s love for dinosaurs and paleontology, they recommended the Royal Gorge Dinosaur Experience to the Mace family.
Carie Canterbury / Daily Record
Patrick Mace, 5, takes part in the ropes course at the Royal Gorge Dinosaur Experience on Monday as part of his Wish Day through the Make-A-Wish Foundation. “I just can’t stress how amazing it’s been and how awesome Make-A-Wish is,” she said. Patrick was born with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a disease in which a portion of the heart is enlarged. Patrick is asymptomatic, but the condition is potentially life-threatening. “He is really limited in things he can and can’t do,” Mace said. “He can’t do sports, and
he will never attend gym class like the rest of his friends do; he can’t do little league, and he has to be careful with playground equipment — if he falls off, it can be dangerous.” His parents carry an automated external defibrillator with them everywhere they go with Patrick because although he is asymptomatic, he can go into sudden cardiac arrest at any moment.
Patrick is monitored by doctors, including undergoing an echocardiogram twice a year and a cardiac MRI annually, which requires him to be under anesthesia. He may require a pacemaker when he is older. When asked what his favorite part of the trip was so far, he said he didn’t “like” any part of it, however, he “loved” everything about it. The Royal Gorge Dinosaur Experience also was a destination for a little boy from the Denver area in August 2016, just one month after they opened. “It’s humbling,” said Zach Reynolds, president of the Royal Gorge Dinosaur Experience. “It’s also extremely thrilling for us to be able to have such a unique opportunity to have a kid who has potentially a shortened life have the experience of getting something that he really wants to do and that we can be part of that.” In addition to the personal, guided tour of the dinosaur museum, Patrick also was treated to a wish party with
dino decor, a $100 shopping spree in the gift shop, a lifetime membership to the museum and time in the ropes course, the animatronic wild walk and the Paleo Lab, all courtesy of the Dinosaur Experience. A personalized stone will be placed in front of Patrick’s favorite animatronic dinosaur to commemorate his visit. “This goes along with our main core mission to be able to educate and build family memories,” Reynolds said. “This fits perfectly within the spectrum of that for a family that is at that place where they can use it more than anybody else.” The Mace family also visited the Museum of Nature & Science on Saturday, the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden on Sunday, and after their visit to the Dinosaur Experience on Monday, they were treated to a drive to the Marsh Quarry and to see the dinosaur tracks on Skyline Drive, courtesy of Colorado Jeep Tours. The Quality Inn also donated the family’s room while they were in Cañon City.
Cañon City residents invited to groundbreaking event for streets project By Carie Canterbury
The Daily Record
Groundbreaking will happen this week on the street projects approved by taxpayers in 2016 through the 2A Streets Projects campaign. The public will be able to follow the construction work every step of the way. Through a new website designated for this project, residents can learn answers to frequently asked questions and contact the construction company at www.2astreets.com. Residents also may call 719-900-4810 or email 2ASTREETS2017@ KIEWIT.COM for information about construction. “The website has construction information, and we will be updating it every week with what’s happening the next week,” said Hunter Sydnor, public information officer for Kiewit Infrastructure who was awarded the design/build street improvement project by the City of Cañon City in April. The total amount approved by the city council for this first phase of the project is $9.4 million. The Engineering Department completed its analysis of priority streets to begin reconstruction, but the contractor conducted its own assessment, as well, before work was slated to begin. The work will be spread out across
town and not concentrated in one area. Sixty-seven percent, or 66 miles, of Cañon City streets are considered “failed to poor” condition. “At the rate they’re deteriorating, we would be driving on gravel streets in 10 years,” said Bob Weir, spokesperson for the Fix Our Streets citizens’ committee that spearheaded the campaign for Referendum 2A in 2016. “That’s why we worked so hard to get this done — I am so happy to see this come to fruition.” Streetwork slated for this year includes: Greenwood Avenue (15th to 16th); 16th Street (Franklin Avenue to Main Street); Yale Avenue (College to Harding avenues); First Street/ Mariposa Road (New York Avenue to Wild Rose Drive/ Ptarmigan Trail); Orchard Avenue (U.S. 50 to East Main); East Main Street (Rainbow Drive to Berry Parkway); 10th Street (Main Street to U.S. 50); South Street (Field Avenue to school driveway); Washington Street (Fifth to Ninth); Fairview Avenue (Fifth to 10th); Whipple Avenue (Fifth to 10th); Steinmeier Avenue (East Main to city limit); and Main Street between 15th and 16th). Kiewit will begin the Yale and East Main Street projects first, but most will at some point run simultaneously. Some of
Kiewit Infrastructure / Special to the Daily Record
Streets highlighted in red will be the ones redone this year. the streets will receive a new waterline, replacing some that are more than a century old. All projects are expected to be completed by the end of December. Mike McDonald, project manager with Kiewit, said after assessing Cañon City’s streets, it’s past time for replacements, adding that many are 40 to 50 years old. “They are actually in pretty good shape for as old as they are, but they need replaced,” he
said. “They’ve been maintained as best as they can, but everything has its shelf life — typical pavements, like asphalt — 30 years is the maximum shelf life you can expect.” In the meantime, residents may report potholes to the Cañon City Street Department by calling 719-269-9027 or online at http://www.canoncity. org/departments/streets_ stormwater_and_engineering/ complaints_reports.php. Cañon City Street
Superintendent Tony Falgien said crews are preparing to chip seal about 5.4 miles of streets. The public is invited to a 2A Streets Groundbreaking Ceremony at 8:30 a.m. June 20 at Yale and College. Mayor Preston Troutman, City Councilwoman Ashley Smith and a representative from Kiewit Infrastructure will speak about the passing of the 2A Referendum in Cañon City and the plans for 2A Streets Projects for 2017.
