Milan Lenarsic Milan Lenarsic, 88, of Canon City, passed away June 3, 2017. He was born in Slovenia on June 7, 1928 to Franc Lenarsic and Marija Pecovnik. He was the seventh child of ten, eight boys and two girls. They all worked hard on their small farm when they were young, as the family had little money. They experienced World War II and the difficulties of communism as a strong, Catholic family. Five of Milan’s brothers were killed after the war. Milan was hidden in Austria and was a refugee. Milan was sponsored by the Holy Cross Abbey. He came to Canon City in 1953 and worked for the Anton Adamic Milan Lenarsic family farm and ranch. In 1957, he began living at and farming for the Holy Cross Abbey. He loved farming and ranching and was very proud of the Abbey’s beautiful campus. Milan did this for nearly 40 years. He was friendly, caring, unselfish and had a great sense of humor. If you saw him, you would have seen his hat sloped to the sunny side to shade his blue eyes. He enjoyed going to Slovenian Hall in Pueblo and after retiring, he traveled some and hosted his niece to our area. He accepted his cross with a strong faith. Milan was preceded in death by his family and is survived by his niece, Rose Butinar. She would like to thank Progressive Care Center for their love and care. Recitation of the Rosary, 9:30 a.m., followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 21, 2017, St. Michael Catholic Church in Canon City, Reverend Jesse Perez officiating. Interment to follow at Lakeside Cemetery. Services have been entrusted to Holt Family Funeral Home. Online condolences @ www. holtfamilyfuneralhomes.com
Daniel Louis Slanovich Daniel Louis Slanovich, 82, was born August
19, 1934 on the family ranch south of Chandler, Fremont County Colorado and departed this life on June 19, 2017 in Denver, Colorado. Dan is survived by his brother, Augustine (Gus) Slanovich, sister, Helen Skrabec and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Matthew & Emma Slanovich; brothers, Matthew & John D. Slanovich; sisters, Emma Jo Moore, Dorothy Ryan & Mary Slanovich; niece, Lanelle Busch & nephew, Stan Slanovich. After serving in the Army, Dan graduated from CU with dual degrees in electrical engineering and business. Dan’s career as an electrical engineer with Beech Aircraft involved historic government contract work with our country’s early space program, where he worked on both the Gemini mission at Cape Kennedy and the Lunar Excursion Module (LEM). However, his longtime desire to run his own company led him back to Colorado where he and his brother, Gus, successfully owned and operated a food processing company for 15 years. From there, the dream Dan had as a young boy to become a landowner where he was born & raised was realized. Working hard and seeing his vision become a reality was one of his many accomplishments. We are grateful for staffs at Highline Place and Suncrest Hospice for their compassionate care. A celebration of Dan’s life was held on Tuesday, June 27 in Canon City, Colorado. Memorial gifts can be made in Daniel Slanovich’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association-Colorado Chapter, 455 N. Sherman St., #500, Denver, CO 80203. Artists’ Gallery to celebrate sixth year with First Friday The Artists’ Gallery of Cañon City will celebrate its six-year anniversary at the First Friday artist’s reception from 5 to 8 p.m. July 7. Under the ownership and direction of businesswoman Sammy Burman, the gallery has transformed over the last six years into a thriving showcase for more than 50 talented local artists. Housed in the charming old “Hartwell Block,” which was built in 1886 and contained more than 21 different businesses, The Artists’ Gallery has helped to inject new life into Historic Downtown Main Street. A life-long supporter of the arts, Burman emerged from retirement in 2011 to rescue the failing gallery from closure. She embarked on the new venture with the belief that downtown Cañon City had incredible potential. Basing her plans for the gallery on a modified cooperative concept, Burman marshaled her extensive previous experience in owning and managing art galleries in California. Her business, marketing skills and energy have been valuable in keeping the gallery afloat in these challenging economic times. More importantly, she understands artists — she instinctively knows how to support, mentor, motivate, and engage them as active participants in the gallery. Burman has granted them unofficial ownership. It has become not only an attractive space to display and sell their artwork, but also a home for artistic energy and a source of inspiration and camaraderie. “Cañon City is moving in a positive direction, but there is a lot more work to be done,” said Burman, who also previously was a board member for the Fremont Center for the Arts and a charter member of the city’s Public Arts Committee. “It is still my dream to see more public art and thriving art galleries downtown.” She shares the vision to reinvent Cañon City as an art destination and is optimistic for the future. Having grown up in Canon City, Burman has binding ties to the community, and is a tireless advocate for principles close to her heart. Her current volunteer activities include a committee seat on Fremont‘s Exceptional Women, and an appointment to the Board of Directors for the nonprofit Rocky Mountain Behavioral Health, Inc. “Our monthly First Friday artist’s receptions at the gallery offer an important opportunity for people to gather as a community for a stimulating and fun evening of art, conversation and entertainment,” Burman added. “Please join us on First Friday to celebrate the gallery’s six wonderfully productive and happy years,” Burman said. Located at 416 Main St., Cañon City, The Artists’ Gallery is open every day, from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Phil’s Barber Shop adds new barber
By Sara Knuth The Daily Record
Aaron Vigil’s new career started off as a conversation with his barber. After he decided to quit his old job, Vigil told Brandon Smith, the owner of Phil’s Barber Shop, that he was planning to go to barber school. “He basically just told me that he was basically going to swoop me up,” Vigil said on Tuesday, in-between working on clients at his new chair in the shop. “There was no formal, ‘Hey, do you want to come work with me?’ It was kind of like he implied that I was going to come work here.” Now that he’s done with his barbering education at Center Beauty College in Pueblo, Vigil said he’s ready to take clients. Phil’s Barber Shop, which has been open since 2015 and offers service only on a walk-in basis, now has three barbers:

Smith, Vigil and Kevin Strait, who is a cosmetologist and barber. For Smith, adding Vigil to the team is potentially historic — one client told him that
Cañon City hasn’t had a threechair all-male barber shop since the 1940s. “So, it’s kind of a big deal,” said Smith, who also is a master barber.
of First United Methodist Church, that meets weekly at SomeWhere Saloon. The group was looking for a family to adopt that was in need of a family to be part of their day-to-day lives in a practical, sustainable way. The group helped Wayne find a job at a restaurant and Marie a job housekeeping. “We wanted a deeper relationship, we didn’t want to say, ‘Here’s a bag of food, see you later,’” said Pastor Eric Feuerstein. “We want to be in a relationship to support a family longterm, as long as someone in the family is willing to work, so it’s not a short-term thing.” The church not only helped the family find employment and a rental, they also provided the deposit and first month’s rent. “The hope is that they will be able to eventually repay the deposit, and then it can be forwarded to the next family,” Feuerstein said. Roger Motz, a member of the church and the outreach ministry, said it’s common that people who are experiencing homelessness don’t have the funds to get into housing because they don’t have the funds for the deposit and first month’s rent. “The whole idea of ‘adopt a family’ is to stay in touch long term — decades, hopefully,” he said. Aragon hopes this project of adopting a family will
become a blueprint for other organizations. “To me, this is a miracle, it happened in just three weeks,” she said. “If we can get people into housing somewhere and let them start their lives — what could be simpler?” Wayne said now that they’re getting back on their feet, he’d eventually like to help the Bar Church help other families. Marie encourages people to not “judge a book by its cover” when they see families who are homeless. “A lot of people see someone panhandling and they think all they’re doing is drugs,” she said. “A lot of people just really need help or they need someone to listen to them and understand.” The couple eventually would like to operate their own handmade jewelry shop and finish writing a novel they started several years ago. The family now has a home, but they are in need of a large toddler or twin-sized bed and a queen-sized bed; dressers; a room divider; pots, pans and cooking utensils; eating utensils and knives; a microwave; a book shelf; bed sheets and towels; an area rug for the living room; small living room tables; and a laptop or tablet for homeschooling. To donate items to the family, contact Aragon at 719-275-7241.
Additionally, he said, the arrival of Vigil will help the shop cut down on wait times. “We’re usually a two- to three-hour wait, so it will kind of speed up the wait time and get more people in and out of here, having the third chair,” Smith said. “We just welcome him and we just wish him all of the success we’re having.” Vigil said his skills are on par with the shop, which emphasizes classic barbering and old-school styles. It also offers shaves, men’s hair color, shoe shines and hair and shaving products. But Vigil’s passion, he said, is creating classic looks. “I’ve always appreciated the classic haircuts, a modern twist on the classic haircuts, not deviating too much, not getting crazy with it,” he said. “(It’s) old-school, but not oldfashioned.” Smith added: “Kevin and I
focus more on the traditional, hipster-type haircuts, where Aaron kind of brings the urban flare, which we kind of needed.” And, he said, the shop offers a full range of styles. “We do everything,” Smith said. “There’s nothing we turn down — men, boys, kids, babies. You know, and Kevin even does some women’s services.” Phil’s Barber Shop is located at 331 Royal Gorge Blvd. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. “It’s the only thing I can see myself doing for the rest of my life, honestly,” Vigil said. “My grandma was a cosmetologist ever since I could remember, and some of my best memories were just at the shop with her. So, I figured I would try my hand at cutting hair.”
Church helps family get into housing
By Carie Canterbury The Daily Record Wayne and Marie Brown,
and their five-year-old daughter, Abigail, were living in Colorado Springs when Marie lost her job and they no longer could afford their $1,500 monthly rent. The family ended up on the streets, but they quickly started looking for a safe place to stay — somewhere outside the big city. “We decided to come here, as opposed to trying to camp in the Springs where everyone is out there and there are drug users out on the streets,” Wayne said. “We decided to come here and camp at Phantom Canyon and start going forward from there.” Marie said their options were to either rent a hotel in Colorado Springs or use the last of their money to purchase a car that would double as transportation and as their temporary home. The Browns slept in a tent in the Phantom Canyon area, but because of heavy rains and the risk of flash flooding, they ended up in their car most nights. They were in Phantom Canyon three weeks when they met Pep Aragon, a local advocate for people experiencing homelessness. Aragon immediately put them in touch with the “Bar Church,” a ministry

“Saved by Praying?”
“How can I know I’m Saved?” One might think he is saved because he said “the Sinner’s Prayer.” Variations of the prayer are added inside the cover of some Bibles. However, we don’t find any example of one being saved in the New Testament only by praying! We do read in Acts 9 about Saul of Tarsus who at first persecuted the church. When Saul was on his way to Damascus to find more Christians to persecute, he encountered the resurrected Christ. He was blinded by a light from heaven and then told by Jesus to go into the city where he would be told what to do. The men with him led him there and he waited 3 days without food or water. During that time he was praying. Then a disciple named Ananias was sent by the Lord to Saul. He told Saul he had been sent to restore his sight and that he might be filled with the Holy Spirit. Saul was baptized and immediately began to preach that Jesus is the Son of God. When was Saul of Tarsus saved? Was it when he prayed? No. Later, in Acts 22, Saul (now known as the apostle Paul) would relate his conversion to a crowd in Jerusalem. In verse 16, he recalled what Ananias had told him at Damascus: “Now why do you delay? Get up and be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on His name.” Like 3,000 others earlier were saved in Acts 2:37-47, Saul was saved when his sins were washed away at baptism - not just by praying.
