Marine Corps League honors veterans Sara Knuth The Daily Record With tearful eyes and time to reflect, the Maine Corps League hosted a Memorial Day service Monday at Mountain Vale Cemetery. “Today, we gather all across our great land to honor all of our fallen heroes, both now and in times past,” said Ray Linebaugh, the league’s chaplain and a Marine veteran of Vietnam. Linebaugh, who led a small crowd in prayer, also honored a late friend of his, Lloyd Betzler, who he met after visiting the Bruce McCandless Colorado State Veterans Nursing Home in Florence. Betzler, he said, served during the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II. After visiting with him, Linebaugh learned Betzler was with the same division, battalion and company he was when he fought a war later in Vietnam. “We became the best of friends,” Linebaugh said. After he died, Betzler’s family gave Linebaugh an unopened box of personal items, including poems

written by other Marines about Iwo Jima. On Monday, he read poems about found in the box out loud for the first time. “Marines now are standing there
beside their comrades death, behind the hell of landing there, the fight is still ahead,” one poem read before continuing, “the flag we love is flying, a tribute to the noble dead, to those who are still a’dying.”

Family Carpet Care gives back Carie Canterbury The Daily Record Mike DeLaRosa, owner and operator of Family Carpet Care, spends his weekends giving back to the community, as he cleans carpets at the Cañon City Public Library at no charge — it’s his gift to the community. “We are so excited to have Mike come and do this,” said Suzanne Lasha, the director of the Cañon City Public Library. “He came in and it was like an answer to my prayers. Even though it is a newer carpet, it needs a good cleaning — it’s wear and tear all the time.” She said the library had 132,500 people go through its doors in 2016. “Every year I want to give a donation to a business or household, or a place where the public wants to spend time,” DeLaRosa said. Toward the end of the year, DeLaRosa will solicit nominations for a household, business or organization who could use a complementary carpet cleaning. The business has been in operation for about 12 years, but DeLaRosa took it over in February after going to school to learn the finer points of carpet and upholstery cleaning. DeLaRosa is a Fremont County native who formerly worked in law enforcement. He enjoys his new business because it’s less stressful and it’s fulfilling, he said. Family Carpet Care offers steam cleaning and low-moisture cleaning, and he can clean one room or an entire home. Family Carpet Care offers commercial and residential service to all of Fremont County and surrounding areas. Free estimates and military discounts are available. For more information, call 719-3152437, visit www.familycarpetcare.com or email myfamilycarpetcare@gmail.com.

District offers free summer meals at mobile food sites Mobile sites in the Cañon City School District’s summer lunch program are listed below:
Sara Knuth The Daily Record During the school year, most children have to make their way to their school’s cafeteria to eat lunch. But this summer, the Cañon City School District’s nutritional services department is bringing lunch to them, with mobile food sites set up in various parts of the community. “It’s easier to bring it to them and to know we’re feeding more kids,” said Heather Williams, the district’s nutrition services manager. The mobile food sites, officially introduced Wednesday and set to run until Aug. 4, are part of the district’s summer lunch program, which is available to all children under 18 years old. The program will still have a permanent location at Cañon City High School, but for the kids who can’t make it there, the district’s vans will travel to various parks and apartment buildings to give them a healthy lunch. “A lot of the kids are in the parks anyway,” Williams said. “Cañon is so spread out. A lot of kids, if they’re on this side of town or that side of town, if their parents can’t get them there, or if they’re working, they have no way to get there.” In each lunch, Williams said, meals include a sandwich, chips, fresh fruit, milk and more. For Cañon Exploratory School student Ever Emmerson and McKinley Elementary School students Lucy and Summer Gamache, the lunches were a chance to eat for free Wednesday in Centennial Park. “It’s shady in the park, and I like eating apples,” Ever said. Pierre Gamache, Lucy and Summer’s dad, said he plans to take his daughters to a mobile food site near McKinley Elementary for much of the summer. “It’s fun to just get out of the house,”

U.S. 50 Sara Knuth / Daily Record Cindy Harding of the Cañon City School District's nutritional services department serves children lunch Wednesday through a mobile site at Centennial Park. he said. “They’d rather do this than a sandwich at home.” And for Dawn Robinson, a teacher at Rocky Mountain Children’s Discovery Center, Wednesday’s meal was part of the school’s weekly routine. “I think it’s great that they make it easier for kids to get it in different parts of town that may not be able to make it to the high school as easy,” she said, adding that previously, the school sent students to CCHS on a bus for summer lunch. For Williams, making it easier for children to get lunch is the goal. “Our thought process last year was we did the bus to pick kids up, and what we found was that a lot of those little kids can’t get on the bus without their parents,” she said. “And we just don’t have enough room.” The mobile sites, which are at each location for 10-minute intervals, make stops, in order, at Cañon Exploratory School, 1401 Washington St., Mountain
View Park, the Country Green Apartments, the Heatherwood Apartments, McKinley Elementary School and Centennial Park. They run from 11 a.m. to 12:55 p.m. CCHS’s lunch is served from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Breakfast is served there from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Each of the meals, subsidized through U.S. Department of Agriculture funds, are free to children under 18 years old. At the CCHS program, adults pay $4. To schedule groups of 15 or more, Williams said to call 719-276-5887. For more information, call 719-276-5813. “As a school (district), we sit at over 50 percent free and reduced lunch, so we already know we have families that are in need during the school year, which means they’re in that much more need during the summer,” she said. “So, it’s expensive for families to buy fresh fruit and vegetables. A lot of times, we know they’re not getting those during the summer and that’s important.”
• 12:05-12:15 p.m.: Heatherwood Apartments, 260 Justice Center Rd. • 12:25-12:35 p.m.: McKinley Elementary School, 1204 McKinley St. • 12:45-12:55 p.m.: Centennial Park (Duck Park), 221 Griffin Ave. In addition to the mobile sites, the lunch program will still have a permanent location at Cañon City High School, 1313 College Ave. There, lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Breakfast is served at CCHS from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Each of the meals are free to children under 18 years old. Owner of 16th Street Café celebrates anniversary Carie Canterbury The Daily Record 16th Street Café celebrated its 22nd anniversary with an open house Saturday at 302 N. 16th St., Suite A. Arlene Hanson opened 16th Street Café in June 1995 and operated the restaurant until she died in January 2013. Her nephew, Jason Harding, purchased the business in July 2016. Harding is proud to keep his aunt’s legacy alive. “I am so pleased that my son is carrying it on, and he is doing a great job,” said Harding’s mom, Linda Harding, who works as the café’s manager of operations. “I am very, very proud of him.” Harding said the local support he has received the last several months has been overwhelming. “From the bottom of my heart, I am thankful for all the support from all my family and all the friends I’ve met here in Cañon,” he said.
“It’s been wonderful.” Harding was a manager at Sprouts Farmers Market in Fort Collins when he decided to purchase the café. He started cooking when he was a young boy and continued on to make a living as a cook. He graduated in 2014 from Black Hills State University in South Dakota with a bachelor’s degree in business and entrepreneurial studies. Prior to that, he worked at the Fish Market Restaurant in San Diego, Calif., and The Vortex Bar & Grill in Atlanta, Ga. Harding has kept Hanson’s original menu, but he has added his own specials and creativity. Some of his creations include the Royal Gorge Omelette, The Rafter, Italian Stallion, Lox n Bagel, cobb salad and more. Some of his patron favorites include carrot butternut squash soup, asparagus soup and avocado soup. “The really fun part is paying respect to what was here and what created this place but also
being able to add new items,” he said. “The freedom to be able to do that is quite remarkable.” Eventually, Harding hopes to expand to include dinner hours and grow into a larger building. Right now, he describes 16th Street Café as a “very personalized, friendly, quaint café that offers the freshest and healthiest ingredients.” Nothing is deep fried or breaded. “We put a lot of pride in what we do, and I think it shows in the food,” he said. Catering also is available for business and private events, including lunch and after hours. Harding said he is passionate about keeping his business local when it comes to purchasing produce and meats, and he uses locally-roasted coffee. “It’s nice to be able to talk to the people you are getting your supplies from and keep it personalized,” he said. Harding does the majority of the cooking, including

Dean Olson of Cañon City shows the engine of his 1959 Studebaker Silver Hawk. The car is one of many that will be featured at the Cañon Car Club Car Show on June 9-10.
Cañon Car Club Car Show set for June 9-10 Sarah Matott The Daily Record It looks like it’s been plucked straight from the movies. The Studebaker Silver Hawk stopped being produced in the early 1960s, but Dean Olson’s 1959 Studebaker Silver Hawk can be viewed in person at the 36th annual Cañon Car Club Car Show. Olson of Cañon City said he’s had the car for about two years now and handled most of its restorations. “It’s all about the fins,” Olson said, pointing to the back of the car where the car’s noticeable white fins contrast with the light blue color of the car’s body. Olson said at the time his Studebaker was made, everything had fins, because everything looked like rockets. “Everyone was heading to space,” he said. Olson said his car has a rare V8 speed, with three transmissions and an overdrive. He said there were only 92 automobiles made with that particular combo in 1959. “Studebaker actually has an interesting story because they started out by making wheelbarrows,” he said, adding the company evolved into a car company. The Studebaker Silver Hawk, Olson said, is classified as a sports car and was advertised as a sports car than can seat five.

“It’s not a modern day fast car, but for its generations, it was one of the fastest,” Olson said, adding he’s had the car up to 140 mph. Olson said people from older generations can recognize the car and its model, while everyone else always like the car’s shape and color. Besides nearly restoring the car completely, which can cost as much $40,000, Olson said he’s also replaced the car’s radio to have Bluetooth and AM/FM radio. “It looks like the old radio, but it’s been upgraded,” he said. Meanwhile, the car’s original air conditioning is still in the vehicle with slits visible on the outside of the car’s front. The slits allow air to flow to the inside of the vehicle while it’s being driven. For a better look at Olson’s car, people can attend the Cañon Car Club Car Show, which will be 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 9 -10 at Centennial Park. Brad Knotek with the Cañon Car Club said their car show is for more hot rods and custom built cars, unlike other car shows in the area that also can include street cars and antique cars. Knotek said they will accept entries for the car show until the morning of and that registration costs $30. “One thing we do want to emphasize is that this is a no admission charge event,” Knotek said, adding that the car show is for people of all ages.

“Say Something Nice!”
Recently we began a study of 1 Corinthians in our Wednesday PM Bible class. If there ever was a church with problems: it was Corinth! Yet the apostle Paul didn’t begin that letter by ripping into them: before he addressed their problems he gave thanks to God for them and commended them for their good points, then began to deal with their many and varied shortcomings. There’s a lesson here I wish some politicians could grasp: speaking of the constant criticism of our new president: his opponents can’t seem to find anything good to say about him or his family or his policies. They don’t seem to realize that if he does well it will benefit our country, also. When our former president was elected eight years ago, I wasn’t pleased but was willing to give him the opportunity to do well and prayed that he would. That’s not the case with these naysayers: they just don’t get it - their constant criticism makes them look like idiots! There’s a personal application here, too: I imagine you can think of someone that - for whatever reasons - you just don’t like and find it hard to say anything good about. You should understand that constantly berating that person to others doesn’t only make him look bad: it makes you very unpleasant to be near! Try hard to be a good influence on folks around you: express your faith and your feelings in a constructive way. Jesus said, “Pray for your enemies.” And when you must disagree, do so agreeably: say something nice - or don’t say anything!
