Denver law firm sets up office at TechSTART By Carie Canterbury The Daily Record
Robin Roberts and Lisa Danny-Roberts have the best of both worlds with one law office based in the big city and now one in the smaller community of Cañon City. Owners and operators of Roberts & Roberts Law Firm LLC, based in Denver, the couple recently opened a satellite office at TechSTART, a co-working facility for Fremont County innovation sector businesses, located in the Apex Office Building located at 425 Main St. Robin Roberts and his wife, Lisa DannyRoberts, have practiced law a number of years before opening their firm about nine years ago in Denver and then moving to Cañon City about a year-and-a-half ago. Lisa Danny-Roberts specializes in probate estate planning, conservatorship/ guardianship, elder law and consumer
bankruptcy. Robin Roberts’ original background was software engineering before he became interested in legal issues oriented around technology businesses, including copyrights, trademarks and licensing issues. “That’s why I’m enjoying (being housed at TechSTART) — there are a couple of people doing some software stuff, and there are some people working on some media,” he said. Roberts said he and his wife are interested in making legal services accessible and affordable to the small business community. “We try to be very careful not to sell people products they don’t really need,” he said. “We try to really address people’s needs rather than load them up with the fat of the day in terms of estate planning.” Roberts re-emphasized that making law accessible to everybody is a priority.
“It’s my belief that when I talk to someone about their legal problems that they should understand,” he said. “I try to make people understand and participate in the decision — we are affecting people’s lives, they own those decisions.” The couple moved to Cañon City because they enjoy the smaller community and the amenities available here. They travel to Denver as needed, but they appreciate having an office space in Cañon City to serve clients locally. Roberts said they have supported tech incubators and small business entrepreneurialtype programs in the past, and they enjoy talking to small business owners and giving them guidance. For more information about Roberts & Roberts Law Firm LLC, call 719-315-5275 or visit http:// robertsandroberts.net/.
Briefly Fremont Adventure Recreation hosts local hikes with children
Beating summertime boredom can be a tough job for parents, especially as video games and online activities vie for children’s attention. In order to promote healthy living to a younger audience and bring awareness to select nation-wide outdoor recreation initiatives, Fremont Adventure Recreation is hosting the third of four group hikes July 15. Participants will meet at the B.F. Rockafellow Ecology Park parking lot (Temple Canyon Road), and will be invited to hear a short informational talk from Gregg Goodland, Public Information Officer for the BLM Royal Gorge Field Office, and enjoy a group hike to Grape Creek. Hikes are free, and participants who explore all four Summer Series locations are eligible to receive a prize at the end of the summer. Hikes last about one hour, though participants are encouraged to stay and play as long as they like.
“We’re really trying to encourage kids to become lifelong outdoor enthusiasts and public land stewards,” said Brian VanIwarden, the FAR board director. There are a number of nationwide initiatives that focus on getting kids outside, including GOCO’s Generation Wild and the National Park Services’ ‘Every Kid in a Park’ program, both of which FAR highlights in their series. “Bringing awareness to these programs and tapping into their resources helps us to connect kids to other opportunities,” VanIwarden said. “Seeing the kids have fun on the trails and be excited to come back with other family members is what our summer series is about.” The first two hikes in the series utilized the new Royal Gorge Park Trails and the Marsh Quarry Trail in Garden Park. Local volunteers, including BLM Royal Gorge Field Office Park Ranger Bryce Hofmann, Leave No Trace instructor Kristen Kubina and
BLM Paleontology and Abandoned Mines Intern Andrew Smith, assisted in giving informational talks to children ages 3-13. They also handed out various educational materials, such as activity books and keychains, to participants. “We also give each kid a button that represents that trail, and they can collect all four,” says VanIwarden. “If they miss a hike,” he explains, “they can show us a photo of them hiking the trail at the next meeting and they can earn the button.” Individuals interested in joining the hike on July 15 need only to show up at the trailhead at 9:00 a.m, sign a waiver, and remain with their child for the duration of the hike. No special equipment is needed, but sturdy shoes, a water bottle, sunscreen, and a snack are suggested. For more information, please log on to www. joinFAR.org or contact coordinator@joinFAR. org.

Ken Dale is the first artist to have his work on display in the new Studio Gallery located at the Fremont Center for the Arts. The FCA recently opened the lower level gallery to better optimize space and to offer exposure to more local artists. The accomplished, award-winning artist has his paintings and cast bronze sculptures featured now through Aug. 19. Dale has collectors across the U.S. and in Europe. He said his art is a progression of what he’s been doing since he was a young man. In college, he majored in art and industrial art. He specializes in oils, frames and bronze casts. Dale lived in Alaska before moving back to Colorado, where he enjoys painting aspens and Colorado wild and domestic life. He particularly enjoys painting on large canvases. “I just don’t feel like I can get my whole being into that painting unless its life sized,” he said. Dale’s home studio also has a wood shop, where he makes custom-fit frames for his pieces. Some of his framed art also features his mounted bronze pieces. In 1999, Dale won Best of Show in the “National Parks: An Artist’s Perspective” through the National Park Service in Gunnison. July’s First Friday event will be featured in the lower level gallery from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, with a members preview from 4:30 to 6 p.m. For more information, visit www. fremontarts.org. For more information on Dale’s artwork, call Dale at 719-214-0408 or on Facebook, search for “Dales Fine Arts/ Joy and Ken Dale.”

KLB Boarding Kennel offers a variety of packages By Carie Canterbury The Daily Record PENROSE — If you want your pet to live like royalty while you’re away, check out KLB Boarding Kennel in Penrose. The first-class boarding facility has been in operation at 1355 R St. in Penrose since June 2003. However, owners and operators Ken and Linda Brown have 40 years of experience in caring for and boarding pets. Earlier this year, KLB Boarding Kennel expanded to add the couple’s daughter and son-in-law, Andrew and Lisa Diaz, as partners. “What’s gratifying for us is when people tell us this is the first place they’ve been able to leave their dog and not worry about the dog while they’re gone,” Ken Brown said. “The dogs are happy to see them when they get back, but they’re also happy to come back here — that gives owners a real sense of peace when their dogs are excited to come to the kennel.” Instead of just offering basic boarding services, KLB also offers a variety of kennel sizes and spa packages.
Carie Canterbury / Daily Record
Ken and Linda Brown and Lisa Diaz pose for a photo Thursday at KLB Boarding Kennel at 1355 R St. in Penrose. Add-ons available for purchase include times for playing, exercising and snuggling, bedtime treats, baths, nail trims, pupsicles and de-shedding treatments. Boarders also may bring
their own blankets and toys to enjoy in their home away from home. “We’ve always offered exercise, but now we offer play time and different treats for purchase that we make
here, so they are fresh and have no preservatives,” Lisa Diaz said. The owners also said they take pride in the kennel’s cleanliness and larger-sized pens.
“We are mostly known for our big pens,” said Linda Brown. “We go all the way up to king suites, and all of our pens are indoor/outdoor.” The pens have heating and air conditioning, raised beds and filtered-in music, and dogs also enjoy a 66,000-square-foot enclosed play area during their stay. “It’s all about reducing stress for pets,” Ken Brown said. “The personalized attention and the interaction helps them get comfortable with us, so they know what’s going to happen the next time they come back and they know who we are — their stress level goes way down.” KLB’s Facebook page offers a way for pet owners to see photos and videos of their furry friends while they’re away. “We enjoy being able to provide a service for people that gives them a peace of mind when they’re away,” Lisa Diaz said. Reservations may be made online or by calling 719-3726831. For more information or to view pricing details, visit http://klbkennel.com.

When my family and I decided to open our funeral home, we knew we didn’t want to take a zippered pouch or bag into a family’s home. So, my mother-in-law made us a quilt and so began our tradition as the first funeral home in Fremont County to use quilts when caring for your loved ones. Now several local quilters make them for us, each one a work of beauty, care and dedication. The same dedication and care you will receive from my staff at Harwood Cremation and Funeral Service.

“Impossible?”
“Impossible” means something that just can’t happen, it can’t be done. God is “omnipotent” (all powerful) and we know that with God all things are possible (Matthew 19:26), yet the Bible speaks of several things that are “impossible.” In the New Testament epistle we call Hebrews, the writer mentions 4 things as being “impossible.” Today, let’s notice one of these and try to clarify misunderstandings that may sometimes arise. Recall the context of Hebrews: some were leaving Christianity and going back to the old Mosaic system. The first “impossible” is from Hebrews 6:4-6 concerning some who had left Christianity: “It is impossible to renew them again unto repentance.” Obviously, some Jewish Christians had “fallen away” and gone back to the old system. Why? Hard times? Persecution? But the underlying cause was a lack of faith in God! First note what it doesn’t say: it doesn’t say that it is “impossible for them to repent” but “to renew them again unto repentance.” The infinitive mood shows conditional action, so renewal unto repentance was conditional - upon human choice, will or determination. The problem was these had seen everything Christianity had to offer – and walked away! Their mindset was simply “Regardless of what anyone may say or do: I will not change!” Recall the story of “The Prodigal Son” (Luke 15). Why didn’t the father just go get him? The effects of sin must not be minimized: Note Hosea 5:4 “Their doings/deeds will not allow them to turn to God.” Thus, it is impossible for anyone to “renew them:” as long as they choose to continue in their disobedience!
