Potential buyer reveals plans for St. Scholastica Academy By Sara Knuth The Daily Record With sidewalks littered with empty beer cans, weeds and more, the century-old campus that was once St. Scholastica Academy hasn’t been occupied in about a decade. But two-and-a-half years from now, Michael Butler plans for the campus to be a home. Butler, the complex’s potential buyer and a resident of Colorado Springs, said he plans to redevelop the campus into apartments for people ages 55 and older, luxury apartments and affordable town homes. He presented information about the three-phase plan to neighbors of the campus Monday with project coordinator Steven Savage and property manager Joyce Hug. “The town wants it, and we need it,” Hug said. “I’ve been looking forward to this for so long.” The group also has fielded dozens of letters from neighbors who said they are concerned about the implications of low-income housing, which is a term Butler said he doesn’t agree with. Instead, he said he views the potential housing as affordable and added that he sees a need in the community for more housing. “There’s been some very vocal opposition,” Savage said. “But for every one against, we’ve had a couple for.” The group members said they view the property as a chance to improve on the vacant campus.

Carie Canterbury / Daily Record The property at St. Scholastica, pictured in March, includes six fully functional buildings with a combined total square footage of 116,988 feet. “This is going to be a major, major change, not only for the community, but for Cañon City,” Savage said. “We want to do something positive for the community. Sure, it’s an investment. It’s a project, but you don’t run into this type of property every day.” In its lifetime, the 116,988 squarefoot St. Scholastica campus has been a school for young women, a behavior modification facility for teen boys and girls and, most recently, a vacant piece of property owned by a Utah-based investment group. The oldest structure, which is on the State and National Register of Historic

Places, was built in 1897 and opened by The Benedictine Sisters of Chicago as Mount St. Scholastica Academy. The newest structure, a church, was completed in 1983. The rest of the campus was built during the years in-between and consists of a dormitory building, a learning center, a 204-seat auditorium, gymnasium and an indoor pool complex. When it first went up for sale, it had an asking price of $2.35 million and then was reduced to $895,000 in January 2016. After the behavior modification project closed in 2008, the campus

became vacant. As vandalism occurred, the City of Cañon City gave the previous owner an ultimatum: clean up the campus or face boarded-up windows and a lien. Afterward, in March, real estate broker Kurt Zerby announced Butler’s plans to buy the property. “We haven’t even got it started yet, and there’s a waiting list,” Savage said. “People are walking up and down and saying, ‘When is it going to be done? Can I put my name on the list?’ So, it’s going to be a very in-depth project.” Butler will present more information at 7 p.m. July 18 at 128 Main St.

Gregory John Edward Murray

Call for artists for Pioneer Days Poster

Gregory John Edward Murray, beloved husband and father, died at Sangre de Cristo Hospice House in Pueblo after an extended illness related to complications from being wheelchair-bound for 37 years. Born Feb. 26, 1960, in Mowbray, Cape Town, South Africa, to John and Myra (Lock) Murray, Greg spent part of his childhood on Robben Island off the coast of Cape Town where his father was the lighthouse keeper. In his youth, he spent many hours at the beach with friends, and became an accomplished Gregory Murray surfer. He also enjoyed rugby, soccer, and tennis and was an excellent athlete. On Feb. 9, 1980, a few weeks short of his twentieth birthday, Greg was in a serious car accident that left him a paraplegic. In the early 80s, he received Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. He had a very strong Christian witness and was an inspiration to many. He worked for the South African Navy as a hydrographic draftsman. In 1997, through a penpal website, Greg became acquainted with an American woman, Jenny Likins. Their relationship developed over the next three years and Aug. 13, 2000, they were married in Canon City, where they established their home. He enjoyed auto racing, cricket, baseball, football, webpage design and music. In 2004, Greg and Jenny welcomed a son, Davis, into their family. Greg is survived by his wife, Jenny, and son Davis. He also leaves behind a sister, Melody Poilly of Cape Town, and several nieces and nephews. His parents and brothers, Brin and Boyd, predeceased him. The family will hold a private memorial in South Africa at a later date.

Fremont County Coroner seeks help in identifying facial reconstruction

Sara Knuth / Daily Record A group of middle and high school students from across Colorado pose for a photo Wednesday in front of the historic St. Cloud Hotel.

Power of Social Media Teenagers learn about promoting historical preservation By Sara Knuth The Daily Record As 50 students filed into the historic St. Cloud Hotel on Wednesday, cellphones started snapping photos of the first elevator in Fremont County, intricate ceilings, an old check-in desk — and all the signs of an ongoing restoration. If those photos make it onto social media with a link to the hotel’s GoFundMe fundraiser website, that’s OK with James Characky. “I personally could only reach 100 people,” said Characky, the president of the Future of Yesterday Foundation, which is in charge of the 129-year-old hotel’s restoration. “If we have 50 kids who have 1,000 friends ... I literally, physically can’t reach them. And they can.” The students, who attend high schools and middle schools across the state, were at the hotel as part of a four-day trip hosted through the Preserve America Youth Summits. The organization, a national education program based in Colorado, encourages students to advocate for historic preservation and conservation by taking them on free four-day trips to historical buildings and sites. On Wednesday, the students

traveled across Fremont County from the morning until the evening, learning about Garden Park, visiting the Royal Gorge Regional History Museum and riding the Royal Gorge Route Railroad. At the St. Cloud Hotel, the students listened as Characky told them about the building’s history as a center of Main Street, transported there brick by brick from Custer County and completed in 1888 and about the restoration efforts that have been led by his family since Characky, 30, was 15 years old. For Preserve America Youth Summits program director Ann Pritzlaff, it also was a chance for students to learn about preservation advocacy. “The kids are already online, so there’s no point in fighting their use of cellphones,” she said. “We embrace it and then ask them to use their social media skills to help those of us in another generation, or site stewards, such as the St. Cloud, to help them move forward.” While most of the students came from outside of Fremont County, Florence High School senior Jordan Huxford had a chance to learn more about the area he lives in and others a little further away, including the Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument, which the group visited Tuesday. “I had never been to a national park, except for the Red Woods. But that didn’t feel like a national park,” he said. “So, we went to the monument and it’s interesting to see

what they do to connect visitors to the area.” For group leader and University of Colorado Boulder student Winter Roybal, participating in the group has been a tradition since she was in high school herself. “We do a summit every single summer in Colorado, and the whole week, we visit historic sites and national park sites,” she said. “And we discuss why it’s important to preserve them and what youth can do to get involved.” Characky said he encourages that involvement. “It’s probably not going to happen without their help,” he said, later adding that social media helps the effort. “Maybe there’s one person in there who says, ‘I have a deep pocketbook, I’m going to go to GoFundMe.’” He also said that as the group works on preservation, which is ongoing, he credits the work of the State Historical Fund, grant writer Estella Cole and private contractor Rudi Hofmann. Pritzlaff said the organization counts of the work of the students. “We need their help to save historic places for the future,” she said. “And we’re grateful for the opportunity to be in Cañon City.” Later, Characky got in on the social media, too — at the end of the tour, he posed for a selfie. The hotel’s GoFundMe account can be found at https://www. gofundme.com/hotelstcloud.

By Sarah Matott The Daily Record The remains of a man found last year had been purportedly in that location between two to four years or longer. On Wednesday, Fremont County Coroner Randy Keller conducted a press conference to give limited details about the man who was found by a hiker in the west part of Fremont County on Sept. 28, 2016. The facial reconstruction of the man had been completed by a specialist in Denver. Keller said he hopes someone will be able to recognize him so that they can identify him. “Hopefully, we can find a positive on the individual and bring closure to a family out there,” he said. Keller said the skeletal remains found were positively identified to be human, and they were able to determine he was a white male and is 5 feet 4 inches to 5 feet 11 inches tall. They’ve also narrowed down the man’s age to be between the ages of 17 to 30 years old; although Keller thinks he would be in his early 20s. Keller said they also were able to determine a surgical repair on the man’s left ankle, where they found two pins still existing. Keller also explained that facial reconstruction isn’t completely accurate. He said the man’s facial features are accurate, but facial area or hair on top of a person’s head is inaccurate when a reconstruction is done. Keller said the man’s death is still an open investigation, and they have no information regarding how the man died. When asked if any DNA, such as the man’s dental records were recovered from the skeleton, Keller did say they were able to get good dental samples, but they need good ID matches they can trace it back to. When asked about the specific location where the man’s remains were found, Keller said he couldn’t be specific but could only say the west part of Fremont County. Keller and the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office together are asking anyone who may have information about the man’s identity to contact them. The Fremont County Coroner’s Office can be reached at 719-276-7358, FCSO Detective Howard Burton can be contacted at 719-275-5557 and the Fremont County CrimeStoppers can be contacted at 719-275-7867.

Sarah Matott / Daily Record A facial reconstruction of a man was released by the Fremont County Coroner’s Office on July 12. The man’s remains were found in Fremont County in September 2016 by a hiker.

tin Hill has spent nearly half his life representing his team, but Saturday, he swam in his last home competition. It’s a bittersweet ending to his youth swimming career that began when he was 10. Now that he’s 18, Hill has aged out of the competitive portion of the club. He said he’s enjoyed not only his time in the water but also the people that he’s met along the way. “I’ve enjoyed the people you meet, the friends that you make, and the ability to get out and do something during the summer,” he said. “There are so many benefits.” Through the years, Hill has competed in just about every event, except the backstroke. “I suck back too much water and start draining the pool when I do it,” he said with a laugh. He started swimming with his family at Pueblo Reservoir for fun, but he was scared of drowning. “I decided to do something about that so I joined the swim team to get rid of that fear,” Hill said. “Slowly, I’ve been able to develop that ability to just swim and not worry about anything.” In addition to ridding his fear of drowning, being part of a team has meant a lot to Hill. “Being part of a team, it’s really nice to have people behind you, people cheering for you,” he said. “Then

when they need it, you’re going to be there cheering them on, as well.” Piranhas coach April McDonough said that’s one thing that stands out about Hill: his love for and devotion to the team. “Nobody loves this league and his team more than he does,” she said. “He loves Cañon City more than anyone I know, he is happy to be here every day, and for him, it’s not about the time ultimately, it’s about self-improvement and being a good teammate, which I think are great leadership qualities.” McDonough said Hill genuinely is an all around nice young man. “He’s always asking people how they are and making sure everyone feels included,” she said. Hill’s younger brothers, Walker and Steele, also swim for the team. He said being part of the Piranhas is definitely a family event. His parents, Chris and Jurhree Hill, turn the weekly meets that take place across the state into family campouts. “You get to know the families here, and they really become your family,” Jurhree Hill said. “That’s what draws us back year after year. You spend every weekend with these people — we have friends all down the I-25 corridor.” Hill graduated from an online school in May, and in May 2018, he will receive an Associate’s degree in welding science. He plans to later move to Texas City, Texas, where he will live, of course, next to the coast where he can take part in lots more swimming.

“Can God Lie?”

I’m not too surprised when someone says they don’t believe in God - even though it is foolish to do so (Psalm 14:1). It follows that some who don’t believe in God don’t believe the Bible, either. It is more surprising when disbelief in God’s Word comes from some who claim to be Christians. Years ago I knew a man who was a leading member of a local denomination. We were talking one day and he asked me if I believed that the Bible was true. When I replied in the affirmative, he admitted to me that he didn’t! He said he believed the Bible was true when first written but that through the centuries there had been errors, additions and omissions so that it was no longer trustworthy. When I asked him for a specific passage he felt was in error, he couldn’t give me an example. I pointed out to him that while some of the newer versions may be slanted toward a particular view and not entirely accurate, there are many accurate versions available: the KJV, NKJV, ASV, NASV, NIV, to name a few. These are all translated from old manuscripts in the original language by numerous scholars. I also mentioned to him that most any doctrinal issue or question can be answered with any of these. The problem is not with the inspired Word of God: the problem is that some like to pick and choose which parts to observe in their beliefs and which parts to ignore. It is impossible for God to lie (Hebrews 6:18). God’s word is truth (John 17:17). Rio Evans is the preacher for the Cañon City Church of Christ, 1718 Franklin Avenue Office phone: 719-275-9696.
