History Channel’s ‘American Pickers’ to film in Colorado By Sarah Matott The Daily Record The documentary series, “American Pickers,” is searching for forgotten relics, and they will be coming to Colorado this July in search of them. “American Pickers” is a series that airs on the History Channel that follows the show’s stars, Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz, as they go across the world “picking” and hunting for America’s most valuable antiques. Fans in Colorado will have their chance to not only see the show’s stars as they film in Colorado, but they also will have a chance to allow the pickers to rummage through their own private collections. According to a news release, the pickers will be in the Colorado in July for an undisclosed amount of time. “Mike and Frank have seen a lot of rusty gold over the years and are always looking to discover something they’ve never seen before,” the news release said. According to a news release, while in Colorado, the two hosts will take many back roads as they look for forgotten relics to recycle and reuse. “Along the way, the ‘Pickers’ want to meet characters with remarkable and exceptional items,” the release said. The show’s producers have said they are trying to get in touch with people as soon as possible, so the sooner people with collections reach out to the show the better. Although exact locations where the show will film is unknown, a news release invited anyone who has or knows someone who has, “a large, private collection or accumulation of antiques,” to send the show’s producers their name, number, location and description of the collection. Those looking to suggest a property for picking on the show should call 855-OLD-RUST and submit photos to the email address americanpickers@cineflix.com.

Florence prepares for big Fourth of July weekend By Skylar Edwards Special to the Daily Record Florence is planning to make this year’s Fourth of July weekend bigger than ever when the city hosts the Rocky Mountain Bank and Trust holiday festival, beginning Saturday. The four-day event will feature activities for all ages, including the inaugural Florence Cup team competition, child-friendly activities, a beer garden, food vendors, a crafts fair, the annual Wet and Dry Parade, a fireworks show and much more. Florence City Clerk Dena Lozano said the city planned the weekend so that several events occur each day. “This year will be bigger than ever,” she said. “Our goal is to have a huge parade and weekend; we are excited for everyone to come and join the events.” The festival is free to enter and all events will occur at Pioneer Park in Florence, with the exception of the parade, which will go along Main Street. A list of events in Florence for the holiday weekend are listed below:
Saturday
The weekend will kick off the inaugural Florence Cup with a 5k run, beginning at 9 a.m. The cost to enter is $50 for a team of six. All teams participating will compete in
a variety of events, including the fun run, volleyball matches, horseshoes, a flippy-tippy obstacle, tug-o-war, a hot dog eating contest and Sumo wrestling. Winners will get their names on the cup trophy along with a T-shirt and free entry into next year’s cup. At 11 a.m., live music will be presented by “Fat Chance” until 3 p.m. Saturday’s events continue with a water balloon fight at noon followed by a sidewalk art contest at 2 p.m. Vendors also will be present at the park throughout the day and live music will close the day. The festival will have a dunk tank, face painting, food vendors and Sumo wrestling for everyone.
Sunday
At 9 a.m., activities will continue with the Florence Cup competition. A Sandcastle competition will start at 10 a.m. for anyone to join. Live music will also be played by Gus Maza, starting at 11 a.m. Later in the night at dusk, a free movie will be played. The movie title can’t be released yet, but the movie will be family friendly.

Fourth of July fireworks canceled By Carie Canterbury The Daily Record The community fireworks display slated for July 4 off Skyline Drive has been moved to 9 p.m. New Year’s Eve, but the fun in the park will continue on Independence Day evening with plenty of other family friendly activities. Hank Holloway, the chairman of the Fremont County Fireworks Committee, on Wednesday announced the person who planned to ignite the fireworks display had to cancel the Cañon City event, along with two others, and there is a shortage of federally licensed people to ignite large fireworks displays. “You have to take a test and be federally licensed to be a shooter,” Holloway said. Anyone who has contributed to the fireworks fund may choose to have their donation returned by calling Holloway, or it will remain in the fund for the New Year’s Eve show, which already is scheduled with a licensed shooter. The annual “4th in the Park” event will kickoff with live music by Applewood at 4 p.m. Tuesday, followed by Indigo Way at 6:30 p.m. Free watermelon will be provided by City Market. The event is free and open to the community. Attendees are invited to bring a blanket or chair for seating. Holloway said donations toward the New Year’s Eve fireworks show may be mailed or dropped off at the Daily Record at 1202 Royal Gorge Blvd., or call (719) 431-2884.
In Loving Memory Judy Maureen Day Sawyer Judy Maureen Day Sawyer went to be with her Lord and Savior on June 27, 2017. Judy was born October 1, 1963 to Willis and Cleo (McColm) Day in Cañon City, Colorado. Judy was the youngest of seven siblings. Judy married Randy Sawyer July 3, 1993 and had two children: Caleb Sawyer and Katie Sawyer. Judy was an amazing mother and loved her children with all her heart. She was always supportive of them whether through their ministry or love of animals. Judy was a wonderful person who loved her Lord and Savior and was always ministering to others. Even through her battle with Leukemia, she was persistently ministering and witnessing to others. Her love for Jesus was evident in everything she did and to everyone she met. Judy was a beautiful writer and wrote many poems, letters, and plays for her family. The plays that she wrote for her nieces and nephews will be treasured forever. Judy will also be remembered for her beautiful voice. Whether gathered at the piano, or by the sink doing dishes, she was always ready to sing with her family. She loved singing and playing old hymns for her parents who accompanied her on their harmonicas. Judy was also lovingly known as the “QVC Queen” of the family. Judy will always be
remembered by her sweet twinkle in her blue eyes, her long blonde curls, and her love of her family. Judy loved children and worked with children through the Sheridan school district. Judy is survived by her parents, Willis and Cleo Day of Wetmore; her husband, Randy Sawyer of Sheridan, Wyoming; her children, Caleb Sawyer and Katie Sawyer; siblings Cathleen (George) Goodwin, Mitch Day, Diane (John) Mahlberg, Jennifer (Jerry) Burtard, Colleen (Gary) Carroll, and Kevin (Gayla) Day; Sister in law, Dana (L. E.) Wyatt, Brothers-in-law Mike (Darby) Sawyer & TG Sawyer. Nieces and Nephews; David (Trena) Goodwin, Willie (Deanna) Day, Dominic (Lora) Day, Jamie (Seth) Brannock, Megan Mahlberg, Wendy (Tim) Conley, Heidi (Chad) Bair, Joseph Burtard, Jared Burtard, Carrie (Zeke) Porter, Joshua (Anna) Carroll, Cody (Jen) Day, Casey (Stephanie) Day, Kelly (Zach) Kruis, Jessica (Matt) Child, Ashley (Todd) Park, Kerrie (Andy) Palm, Stephanie (Jeremy) Heald, and Jennifer (Donovan) Nolan. Numerous great nieces and nephews also survive her. Lifelong friend, Nan Kerr (Brad Hudson) and numerous other friends both in Sheridan and Colorado also survive Judy. Judy will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Judy was preceded in death by nephew, Jason Mahlberg, and in-laws Tom and Loeva Sawyer. It can truly be said of Judy; II Timothy 4:7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 30, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Evangelical Free Church in Cañon City. Interment will be immediately following the service at Mt. Vale Cemetery.
