Briefly FIX It: Healthcare at the Tipping Point A local organization, Health Care for All, is sponsoring a viewing of the movie FIX It: Healthcare at the Tipping Point at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 15 at the Cañon City Public Library, 516 Macon Ave. This 38-minute documentary examines the economics of the U.S. health care system and makes a compelling case for replacing our current complex expensive system for a single-payer approach while creating savings for families, businesses, and the U.S. economy at large. A discussion will follow, so please bring your thoughts and opinions.

Florence officially listed to national historical registry By Sarah Matott The Daily Record Officially, the City of Florence now can be found listed on the National Register of Historic Places. On July 14, a corridor of Florence was recognized to be on the registry; 52 contributing properties and about 20 non-contributing properties. For months, the city’s Historical Preservation Committee and the City Planner have been working to get earn the historical designation. In May, they visited Denver, where they went in front of the state review board for the national registry. City Planner Wade Broadhead said the designation is mostly honorific, but now that Florence has the official distinction of being on the registry, it can benefit in a number of ways. “Obviously, we can put a sign on the highway,” Broadhead said, adding they’ve already been in contact with the Colorado Department of Transportation about installing a sign on U.S. 50. He said CDOT already is working with the Florence City Council about looking into placing more decorative signage at the edge of town. “Bigger buildings are (also) eligible for historical preservation tax credits, which can be a 20 percent tax credit on a rehabilitation loan,” Broadhead said. Buildings in Florence that could benefit from these tax credits include

Main Street in Florence is lined with buildings that display the town’s history with the year the buildings were built. the Rialto Theater, the Elks Lodge, Florence Brewing Company and the McCandless Building. Broadhead also said being designated as a historic district is beneficial for many towns. “Historical districts gain value, hold values through time and can act as a buffer in bad times,” he said. He added that typically tourists and economic developers are attracted to historic districts. Currently, developers are looking at the McCandless building.

Broadhead said they were attracted to the historic downtown in Florence and saw an opportunity. If these developers continue moving forward, Broadhead said they are looking at turning the McCandless building in a “mix use,” property meaning it can serve as storefronts and housing. “It’s also a reaffirmation that we see this area as the heart of Florence, it’s the area we want to preserve and people want to come in to be part of,” Broadhead said regarding the

nomination process. He said nobody objected to the nomination and property owners already take care of their buildings. “Compared to a lot of small towns in Colorado, we have a lot of good architectural integrity,” Broadhead said, saying many of the buildings in Florence today were built in the later 1800s when Florence was an oil town. Many other buildings were added, he said, in the 1920s. Broadhead said the next steps will look at a demolition review or a historical design review. He said as the city’s ordinances stand now, someone could come in and demolish one of the buildings listed on the registry and turn it into a parking lot. With a demolition review, then a developer coming in or property owner would have to go through a review process and permission to demolish a building. Broadhead said a design review would be something else to look at, but he’s not as concerned about it because the look of the buildings already look like the area is part of a regulated district. “The (historical) distinction can also help tell or retell the story of the town . I think people get attached to the story and want to be here to be part of the story,” he said.

K9 Officer Duke jumps in river to catch fugitive By Sarah Matott The Daily Record

A wanted fugitive was quickly apprehended Wednesday after K9 Officer Duke jumped into the Arkansas River to catch him. According to the Cañon City Police Department’s Facebook page, officers, deputies detectives and troopers with CCPD, Florence Police Department, the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office and State Patrol all were searching for a wanted fugitive. This fugitive, who was believed to be armed, was located in the area of Veterans Park. “The suspect ... fled on foot toward the Arkansas River (and) Centennial Park area and eventually jumped into the river to avoid apprehension,” the post said. Duke, however, jumped in after the suspect without hesitation and was able to apprehend the suspect and get him to the river’s edge, where officers were able to pull both the suspect and Duke out of the river The post said the suspect was taken into custody and a weapon was recovered. “Job well done by all, but especially K9 Officer Duke, who readily apprehended the wanted fugitive despite the river conditions,” the post said.

FHS sophomore named Apple Day Queen By Carie Canterbury The Daily Record

Pueblo Community College / Courtesy Photo Mark Peacock is the new director of academic services at Pueblo Community College’s Fremont Campus.

Pueblo Community College Fremont Campus welcomes new director By Sara Knuth The Daily Record When Mark Peacock took a trip to the Rocky Mountains after law school, he resolved that one day, he would live in Colorado. After a career change and 19 years of teaching in Johnson City, Tenn., Peacock finally is fulfilling that dream. He started as the director of academic services at Pueblo Community College’s Fremont Campus on July 3. “I’m thrilled to be here and very happy that I was able to come work at Pueblo Community College and work with such a dedicated and committed and passionate group of educators,” he said Wednesday. As part of his new role, Peacock will work with instructors, primarily supporting and recruiting them. Additionally, he will oversee the campus library and support the school’s tutoring program. “Mainly, I’m working with instructors, both to attract and retain qualified and excellent instructors to support their experience here,” he said. Before his move to Cañon City, Peacock worked for 19 years at Milligan College, a four-year university in Ten-

nessee, where he taught business, digital photography and law classes. He also worked at Northeast Tennessee Community College, where he taught business classes, and before that, practiced law at his family’s law firm in his hometown of Morris, Ill. Outside of work, Peacock’s time has been spent hiking and exploring the area. And he’s no stranger to Colorado. “My first visit was in high school,” Peacock said. “I went to Maroon Bells and absolutely fell in love, of course, with Colorado, coming from Illinois and the flat plains. And it was just amazing, and I loved it.” In the past five years, Peacock said he has visited Colorado several times. About three years ago, his travels took him to Cañon City. “Somebody had pointed me in this direction, and so, we came here. And I just loved Cañon City. Did Skyline Drive, Tunnel Drive Trail, you know, walked along the riverwalk and just really fell in love with Cañon City,” Peacock said. “I came back numerous times after that, visiting, and thought this was a place I really could call home and get involved and really enjoy being part of this community.”

PENROSE — Florence High School sophomore Sierra Francis set out to follow in her older sister’s footsteps when she threw her name into the ring for the Apple Day Queen’s Pageant. And Friday, she succeeded. Francis was crowned this year’s Apple Day Queen during the 2017 Apple Day Queen’s Pageant on Friday at Jenkins Farm and Red Barn Pavilion. Her sister, Morgan Doxtater, was Apple Day Queen in 2012. Besides keeping the title in the family, there was another reason Francis chose to participate in this year’s pageant. “I felt like it would be a great privilege to represent the town I am currently growing up in and to be a part of the community,” she said. “Entering this with all the amazing girls is really a great memory to keep and hold.” Francis and her court will reign over the Oct. 7 Apple Day festivities in Penrose. The 2017 Queen’s court is Shelby Hoxie, first attendant; Carrington Duclos, second attendant; Jacalyn Otterstetter, third attendant; and Mackenzie Cruz, Miss Personality. The 2017 Apple Dumplings are Emalyn Smith and Samuel Perry. Francis said she was surprised to be named queen. “I almost cried because I was so happy and overwhelmed,” she said. “It is such a privilege to be able to be queen.” Francis participates in softball and Future Farmers of America at FHS. Her hobbies include softball, fishing, camp-

She describes herself as outgoing. When answering her on-stage interview question, Francis said what she hopes to take away from the pageant experi-

ence are the memories. “I also hope to take this opportunity and show that it’s OK to step out of your comfort zone and do something that is going to benefit you and your community,” she said.

Cañon City School District’s summer lunch program doubles in size By Sara Knuth The Daily Record The Cañon City School District’s lunch-filled vans only stop for 10 minutes each day at seven locations throughout the community. But by the time lunch is over, that’s enough time to have served an average of 450 meals, according to district statistics from June. The mobile lunch sites, introduced at the start of the summer, are two weeks away from wrapping up for the summer,

with a final day set for Aug. 4. “It definitely exploded,” said Heather Williams, the district’s nutrition services manager. “I just don’t think we could have even known how much of a need that it truly was until getting out there and getting our feet wet.” According to the June statistics, the district served more than 5,200 meals during the course of two-and-a-half weeks. With locations set up at various parks and apartment buildings throughout town, volunteers and nutrition staff members serve children under 18 years

old meals of sandwiches, chips, water and various types of fresh fruit. For Williams, the goal of making the district’s lunch program mobile was to make sure children at all corners of Cañon City received healthy meals during the summer. When lunch was served last school year, about 50 percent of the district’s students qualified for free or reduced-price lunch, according to the Colorado Department of Education. The district, which receives funds from the U.S. Department of Agricul-

ture to serve the meals, also still offers breakfast and lunch at CCHS to children for free and adults for $5. The mobile lunch sites run from 11 a.m. to 12:55 p.m. and stop, in order, at Cañon Exploratory School, 1401 Washington St., Mountain View Park, the Country Green Apartments, the Heatherwood Apartments, McKinley Elementary School and Centennial Park. CCHS’s breakfast and lunch meals are served, respectively, from 8 to 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

“Which Master?”

Jesus said, “Seek ye first His kingdom and His righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33). “These things” are the physical necessities of life: food, clothing and shelter. “These “things are important: but far more important is our relationship with God. When we seek God first, He promises we will have all the “things” we need. Our nation was founded on principles of God and on Christian morality based on His Word. We are the richest nation on earth. Americans enjoy a standard of living far above all others. But prosperity alone does not prove we are pleasing to God. The standard by which we must measure our faithfulness and devotion to God is His Word, the Bible. We must not be “in love” with the world or the things of the world (1 John 2:15). Our devotion cannot be focused on both God and money: we cannot serve two masters (Matthew 6:24). If you are struggling financially, it’s OK to want to improve your standard of living. But “things” must not become our idols. Godliness brings contentment, “but those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and some by longing after it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows” (1 Timothy 6:9-10). Today, it seems the bottom line for every issue money. But if something is morally wrong, it can’t be financially right. Which master are we serving?
