Donald D. Mills, son of Ralph and Ida Mills was born April 7, 1934, in Frederick Ok, and passed away July 12, 2017 in the Mojave Desert, Lancaster California. Don moved from Oklahoma with his family to Hotchkiss Colorado and later moved to Canon City. He was a part of Canon City High School class of 1952, after graduation he joined the Air Force for four years. Upon his return from the Air Force he met and married Myrtle Carroll and two children were born to their family. Don worked for Aircraft Mechanics for a period of time. After his and Myrtles divorce he moved to Florida where he met and married Kim. From there they moved to Palmdale, California and later Lancaster, California. Don loved the desert, and would go there often. Don was proceeded in death by his father and mother, 3 sisters and 3 brothers and both wives. He is survived by his son, Melvin and daughter, Dores Ann and one sister, June (Charles) Knight and several nieces and nephews and granddaughter. Grave side services will be August 9, 2017, at 10:00am with military honors at Lakeside Cemetery. Service by Harwood Funeral Home.

Paul Andrew Monohon, 79, of Canon City, entered into rest August 4, 2017 in the comfort of his home. He was born on May 16, 1938 to Floyd and Lavina (Roe) Monohon, in Ottumwa, Iowa. Both preceded him in death. Paul married Elizabeth Jane (Harrell) on February 21, 1959. Elizabeth preceded him in death, leaving two daughters, Tammy (Orval) Horn and Lisa Monohon. He served in the United States Navy from January 1956 to May 1959. While in the Navy, he was assigned to the National Navy Hospital at Bethesda, Maryland as a corpsman. After the Navy, Paul went to Seminary School at Pineville, Kentucky. While in Seminary School, he preached at Monticella, Kentucky. After finishing Seminary School, he preached at several churches in Illinois. Paul then moved to Colorado, where he was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Canon City. Pastor John K. McDonald was a very loving and caring friend to Paul. Over the years, the church members and Pastor McDonald have been very caring to Paul and his family. In addition to his daughters, Paul is survived by eight grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, as well as numerous friends and extended family. Arthur Willis Kibel, 82, of Canon City, born in Vona, Colorado on April 13, 1935, passed away August 2, 2017. On January 24, 1955, Arthur was united in marriage to Letha (Sporing) Kibel. For many years, he worked on John Golden’s wheat ranch in Northwest Kansas. He later worked for the city of LaSalle, Colorado in Weld County before moving to Canon City in 1997. There, he worked for the Royal Gorge Bridge until retiring at the age of 75. Arthur loved hunting and music and especially enjoyed playing the guitar. Above all else, Arthur loved his family and cherished the time he spent with them. He was dearly loved by all his family and friends and will be greatly missed. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Letha Kibel; children, Stan (Dawn) Kibel, Johnnie (Sherri) Kibel, Mark (Shelly) Kibel; brother, Louis; sister, Clara; 21 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two great-greatgrandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. Arthur was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Daisy (King) Kibel; son, Jim Kibel; infant son, Kurtis Kibel; four sisters and six brothers. Whitewater rafting conditions excellent for August on the Arkansas River Huge winter snowpack followed by steady monsoonal rainfall in the central mountains has produced what experts describe as rare late-season whitewater rafting conditions on the Arkansas River. Flows, measured in cubic feet per second, or cfs, are trending at or above 1,000 cfs at key checkpoints along the river in Browns Canyon, Wellsville and Parkdale. Those levels are well above historic averages for August. “There is a silver lining in all of the rain we have been receiving as of late,” said Rob White, park manager of the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area. “The Arkansas River is still flowing above 1,000 cfs in Salida, something we rarely see in late July, let alone early to mid August.

Lake Pueblo produces state record flathead catfish for Cañon City man

Park has reeled in a state record flathead catfish, for weight. Fishing from a boat with his family on Father’s Day, June 18, Michael Flock landed a flathead that weighed in at 30 pounds, 9.6 ounces and measured 38 inches long. “For Father’s Day, my mom, dad, sister and nephews went out on my parents’ boat on Lake Pueblo,” said Flock, 21. “We’d been trolling all morning, catching walleye and bass. I put on a really large Rapala clown lure, with a 2-inch red head and 7 inches of white body. I cast it out there and let it troll with the boat. It dove real deep.” Flock said he watched the end of his rod bend straight over as they slowly cruised the west end of Lake Pueblo. “I thought I was snagged because we were so close to the bank,” he said. “I yelled to my mom to put it in reverse. That’s when my drag took off and I knew I wasn’t snagged. Using a lure that big, I couldn’t imagine what it was.” Flock said the fish put up a terrific fight. “Every time I got it near the surface, he’d dive back down,” Flock said. “It was intense. Finally, I pulled him up and my dad grabbed the net. Everybody on the boat was cheering. It was a fantastic experience on Father’s Day with my dad.” Flock’s catch erases the previous record set on Jan. 19, 2015, by Tony Chavez of La Junta, who caught a 27-pound flathead catfish below John Martin Reservoir, about 20 miles west of Lamar off U.S. 50. That fish weighed more than double the state’s previous record flathead catfish, caught in 2011. Chavez said he used chicken liver as bait for his catch. The news of Flock’s big catch didn’t shock Carrie Tucker, a Colorado Parks and Wildlife aquatic biologist. She said Lake Pueblo is producing huge catfish of several species.

St. Thomas More Hospital plans to complete Medical Office Building in February 2018 By Sara Knuth The Daily Record For some health care professionals, going to work means heading to buildings that were completed in the 1960s, sometimes blocks away from St. Thomas More Hospital. But by the time the Medical Office Building is completed, six departments and a cafe will be housed in one new two-story facility directly in front of the hospital. “It’s the excitement of another step in our history,” said Jillian Maes, the hospital’s director of marketing and communications. The building, which was the site of a groundbreaking ceremony in August 2016 and faced a few delays, is expected to be completed in February. It will be the new home for family and internal medicine, orthopedics, OBGYN services, an outpatient laboratory, pediatric health services and the Coyote Coffee Den and Cafe. With two stories filled with about 75 offices, officials said they are planning for modern design and equipment in the building, which was expected to cost between $4 million and $5 million in August 2016. “We’re really excited to have a digital x-ray,” said Rick Kamerzell, the hospital’s administrative director. He added that other features include a patio cafe, which will be open to the public. Additionally, he said, the consolidated departments will mean that patients have easier access to administrators and physicians. For Kamerzell and the rest of the hospital, constructing the project has been a result of working with The Boldt Company and Colorado Springs-based companies Bryan Construction and RTA Architects. Officials originally expected to officially open the facility by fall 2017. But after working through delays, including a few that were weatherrelated, the project is on track for the February completion.

And as the hospital looks toward the future, he said the building is designed for an expansion, especially one that can house future administrators. “We’re being prepared for the future,” he said. “We’ll have the capacity in the future to expand horizontally.”

He also said he expects future projects outside of the Medical Office Building, which is getting constructed on the heels of other major projects, including the hospital’s new education center in Florence. The hospital also is working on a new parking lot for employees on Phay Avenue. Provenzano family celebrates 100 years of business By Sarah Matott The Daily Record The business has changed and moved spots, but for 100 years, the Provenzano family has owned and operated a business on Florence’s Main Street. Proven Choice Travel at 115 E. Main Street is owned and operated by Jim and Sally Provenzano. Prior to owning the travel agency, the Provenzanos were the owners of Jim’s Clothing. Jim’s Clothing was first brought by Jim Provenzano’s family in 1927. The store was originally located at 114 W. Main St. and was known through the years as Fremont Tailoring,

Jim the Tailor Haberdashery, Jim’s Men’s and Ladies Ready to Wear and finally Jim’s Clothing. In 1975, the original building was destroyed, and it was after that the business moved locations. For the past 20 years, Jim and Sally Provenzano have been working as travel agents with Proven Choice Travel. Jim Provenzano said the family has been able to stay in Florence for so many years because of the support from people throughout Fremont County. “We’ve been through trials and tribulations, but Fremont County has supported us through all of it,” he said. His wife, Sally Provenzano,

said to celebrate being in Florence for 100 years, they will enter a float in this year’s Pioneer Day Parade in September. “We are working now in our backyard on the float,” she said. At their current business, neither Jim or Sally Provenzano seemed bothered that the internet is a constant competitor for their business. “It’s a pretty risky business,” Jim Provenzano said when asked how difficult it can be running a travel agency these days. Sally Provenzano said people can, of course, do everything essentially on the internet, but with travel agents, it makes it easier and less

stressful for that person. She said many people would be surprised to learn they can book trips cheaper by going through a travel agent rather than trying to do it by themselves. She said the agency gets many customers who are relieved they don’t have to be stressed with the planning of a big trip. She said at Proven Choice Travel, they will plan a person’s hotel rooms and events throughout the entire trip. One example, Sally Provenzano said, involved a couple who had never traveled outside of the U.S. before. The agency helped them

plan a complete two-week trip to Italy. The people also had help to get where they were supposed to be, which makes it easier in a non-English speaking country. “The client was so stressed before leaving but said the trip was ‘perfect’ after because it was all planned out,” Sally Provenzano said. She said they support their clients during trips and work with large reputable agencies only. Sally and Jim Provenzano said they have no intention of retiring anytime soon.
