Hylah Hernandez
Hylah Hernandez
Hylah Jean Fahy Gunther Hernandez, of Cañon City, passed away Friday, July 15, 2016, at the age of 86. She was an only child born to Eugene and Virginia (Crosby) Gunther on Oct. 24, 1929, in Denver CO. Hylah grew up on a ranch which at that time left her with two choices, ranch work or house work. Well, she hated house work, so she became a woman before her time and stepped into the role that suited her best. It’s been said that she was a skilled horsewoman that rode as though she were born to it and she could keep up with any ranch hand. As a young woman, Hylah worked as an elevator operator in Denver to pay for her education at The Emily Griffith School
of Opportunity where she learned to work as a switchboard operator. During this time, she was an officer of the Civil Air Patrol and participated in search and rescue efforts across the front range. After many years, she changed careers and became the first female taxi driver in the city of Denver where she refused to wear a men’s necktie with the suit that was required by the cab company. This is where her fondness for neckwear began as she adorned her uniform with a wide variety of beautifully colored scarves. Many years later she was co-owner and operator of the Buffalo Bar across the street from the Tivolli Brewery. Finally, she started working with Colorado Department of Social Services, where she was responsible for investigating nursing home abuse and neglect. She dedicated many years to the safety and protection of the elderly before she retired and moved to Cañon City. In her retirement, she and her husband, Pete, were dedicated care providers for a number of their grandchildren
for many years. Hylah is survived by her children: Carly & (Rob Wren) Neuway Rick & (Dana) Holdaway Pat Hunter Mark Hunter David and (Cindy) Hernandez Dorene (Hernandez) Basemann Michelle (Hernandez) & (Steven) Scarlatta Anthony & (Michelle) Hernandez 20 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. She was proceeded in death by her parents, her husband Pete Hernandez and her daughter Janet (Armenta) Hernandez. The family would like to recognize the dedication and care provided by the Canon Lodge Senior Care Center in her final year. Thank you so much for taking good care of our mother an grandmother when it was no longer possible for her to remain at home. Words alone could never fully express our gratitude. At Hylah’s request, there will be no funeral service but rather that the family gather privately for a camping trip in the mountains. Online condolences at Harwoodfunerals.com

Dear people of Cañon City, How fortunate we all are to have the brave and selfless men and women of the Cañon City Volunteer Fire Department ready to fight for us anytime they are needed. Please use this opportunity to donate generously to our volunteers. We should make sure that they have the best safety equipment money can buy. They put their lives on the line for us, we need to help them help us. To the families of these brave men and women, you are sharing the best with us. Bless you all and thank you. A very grateful citizen of Cañon City, Dee Johnson

“Eye for Eye, Tooth for Tooth?”
Some folks use this scripture to justify retaliation or to exact revenge for a wrong done to them. However, it can be dangerous to quote a passage without considering the context. The “eye for eye” comes from Deuteronomy 19:21. By reading the entire context (verses 15-21), the meaning is clear: if a person suffered a wrong by another, he was not to retaliate on his own but with two or three witnesses was to take the matter before the judges - who were to make diligent inquiry. If a witness testified falsely, he would be punished as he sought to have his neighbor punished. In Exodus 21:24, “eye for eye, tooth for tooth” was an offender’s punishment but only as the judges determined. The Bible teaches that law-enforcement officials are ordained by God and are to be respected and obeyed by all citizens (Romans 13). The laws of our land permit self-defense but only if our lives or property are in imminent danger. To arbitrarily repay violence with violence is not an individual right: we are a nation of laws and all must abide by the law, even though at times injustices may occur by those who enforce the law. Nobody has the right to take the law into his own hands and become judge, jury and executioner. When revengeminded individuals ignore the law and recompense evil for evil, anarchy will reign and chaos will result. “Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, Vengeance is mine: I will repay, says the Lord” (Romans 12:19).
