In Loving Memory Walter Lee Heikes Walter Lee Heikes, 82, of Canon City, Colorado, son of Milbern and Georgia Heikes was born on December 21, 1934 in LaVeta, Colorado and passed away at home on August 4, 2017 from pancreatic cancer. He married Lois (Slankard) Franke on August 29, 1981 in South Fork, Colorado. Walt went on ahead to hold open the door to Heaven for Lois. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Clarence of Alamosa; Gene, Harry, and Leland of LaVeta; son Kenneth of LaVeta; and granddaughter Lorna Franke of Creede. Survivors include his brother Robert (Joe) of LaVeta; sister Irmajean Thomas of Walsenburg; four stepchildren; eleven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Walt served as an auto mechanic in the U.S. Army and U.S. Army Reserves from March 26, 1957 to February 28, 1963. After working various jobs around the LaVeta area, he ran his own dairy farm in the San Luis Valley until he retired in the mid-1980’s. Walt loved hunting with his grandson Kristopher of Grand Junction and spending time with his devoted wife and family. Special times were spent engaging with the wildlife in their backyard and visiting over coffee with “the boys” at Blimpie’s in South Fork, Colorado. Though no public service will be conducted per Walt’s wishes, remembrances can be made through donations to the Western Dairy Association; westerndairyassociation.org.

Lois Arlene Heikes Lois Arlene Heikes, 80, of Canon City, Colorado, daughter of George and Cecil Slankard was born on July 30, 1937 in Greenwood Community (Ottawa), Kansas and passed away at home on August 8, 2017. She married Walter Heikes on August 29, 1981 in South Fork, Colorado. Walt went on ahead to hold open the door to Heaven for Lois. She was also preceded in death by her parents; sisters Opal Louise; and Beverly McCurdy of Lawrence, Kansas; brothers Glenn of Hartsel, Colorado; Robert of Lawrence, Kansas; Max of Nashville, Tennessee; stepson Kenneth of LaVeta; and granddaughter Lorna Franke of Creede. Survivors include her brother Rex of Eudora, Kansas; daughters Cindy Franke of Vancouver, Washington; Lisa Petty of Canon City; sons Paul Franke of Fairbanks, Alaska; Craig Franke of Skagway, Alaska; eleven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Lois majored in music in college but interrupted her studies to raise her family. She was a pioneer in the Boy Scouts as the first woman Boy Scout Pack Leader. She worked as a bookkeeper early in her career, eventually retiring in 2002 as a manager with over 25 years with Department of Social Services. Lois was a pianist with a great love of music. She played piano for church services in South Fork, Colorado for many years and she loved listening to Elvis Presley. Though no public service will be conducted per Lois’ wishes, remembrances can be made through donations to Sangre de Cristo Hospice and Palliative Care in Canon City, Colorado.

Nancy Nepp Gabella

Nancy Nepp Gabella (née Nancy Lou Nepp), a 40-year resident of Cañon City, Colorado, passed away July 10, 2017 in Colorado Springs, Colorado where she had been hospitalized. Nancy was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on December 19, 1932. At Albert Lea High School, Nancy excelled in archery, basketball and math. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology from the University of Minnesota in 1954. Nancy worked in San Francisco, California, Tallahassee, Florida, and Anchorage, Alaska, before landing in Cañon City where she worked at St. Thomas More Hospital for 20 years. Nancy loved reading, listening to music, playing board and card games, acing 1,000-piece jigsaw puzzles and solving mysteries. A competitive bridge card enthusiast, she played locally and at tournaments. Generous with her time, she played bridge with individuals at the Fremont Correctional Facility and gave rides or other assistance to friends. Nancy attended Christ Episcopal Church regularly. Nancy was preceded in death by her father, Ewald Ernest Nepp; mother, Alice Ray Nepp, both formerly of Albert Lea, Minnesota and Florence, Colorado; brother, John F. Nepp and sister-in-law, Marion A. Nepp, both most recently of Cañon City. She is survived by her daughters, Patricia, of Austin, Texas, Barbara, of Denver, Colorado; sons, Robert, of Villa Park, Illinois, William, of Nashville, Tennessee; four grandchildren, Isaac and Joshua Gabella, from Nashville, Eli and Eric Webb, from Denver; niece, Stacy Nepp, of Colorado Springs, Colorado; nephews, Scott Nepp, of the Cortez, Colorado area, and Greg Nepp of Newcastle, Colorado. Nancy was loved by her family and friends and will be dearly missed. Memorial service, 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 19, Christ Episcopal Church, 816 Harrison, in Cañon City, Reverend Mark Meyer officiating. Nancy will be inurned in the Christ Episcopal Church columbarium, alongside her parents. Michael A. Brizendine

Michael A. Brizendine 59 of Cañon City. Passed away on August 11th, 2017. Michael was born in Puertollano, Spain. He is proceeded in death by his Father Paul Brizendine and Mother Maria Martin-Comacho. Michael was passionate about his family, his military service and his hobbies. He is survived by his Love of 17 years Barbara Addington (her kids Josh & Janell Addington). His kids Brandon Brizendine & Nichol (Aaron Dassler). His sister Anna (Larry Reynolds). Nieces/nephew: Kayla Garcia, Haley Ortiz and Devon Reynolds. Grandkids: Ethan, Elizabeth, Cole, Ariel and Michael (Dassler) and Katalina & Brenden (Addington). He was a veteran of the US Air Force serving from 1977-79 as a Weapon Control Systems Mechanic, receiving an honorable discharge. He had an active roll in the community as the Executive Officer to the Royal Gorge Gun Club; Vice Chairman for the Fremont County Friends of the NRA; NRA Expert handgun and rifle disciplines. He was a Licensed Pawn Broker and FFL Dealer in the State of Colorado. He will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him. A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday August 20th, 2017 from 12pm-2:30pm at Centennial Park in Cañon City, CO.

Lesley Jerome Barron Age 70 of Penrose Colorado, passed away on July 19, 2017 at Veterans Administration Community Living Center in Pueblo due to ongoing complications with COPD, Agent Orange, and various other illnesses. Lesley was born on July 26, 1946 in Segundo, Colorado to Oscar and Evelyn Barron. Les was an old cowboy. He lived a hard life from the get go. He rode in the rodeo, built high rise buildings, did underground welding, and was a highly skilled craftsman/handyman/mechanic but what he was most proud of was serving his country during the Vietnam War. He was in the United State Navy on board the USS Colonial LSD -18 from July 29, 1963 to July 29, 1969. He was honorably discharged as a Damage Control Man, Petty Officer Third Class. Les loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, etc. Les will be missed by many who knew him. Les was preceded in death by his parents, his uncle Stanley S. Barron Jr., and uncles Grant and Earl Barron. Les is survived by his children, son Tony Stewart, daughters Donna Drummon & Leslie Barron, grandchildren Bianca, Dakota and Andre Jr., his aunt Linda Barron, and cousin Lance Barron of Stonewall, Colorado, numerous nieces and nephews and many good friends, especially Steve and Patsy Larson. Les donated his body to science. Service for Les is set for Saturday, September 9th at 10 am at Stonewall Community Church with Rev Jason Starinieri, with interment following at the Stonewall Community Cemetery. Celebration of life for Les will be at Whiskey Creek Ranch.

Alexander Wilson Alexander Wilson (Alex) passed away peacefully in his home in Colorado Springs, Colorado on Monday, August 7, 2017. Alex was born August 19, 1925 in Denver, Colorado to Jesse and George Wilson. He lived in Detroit for a short time before moving back, and Alex lived in Colorado the rest of his days. After serving in the Navy during WWII, he graduated from Denver University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology. In 1951, he married his lifelong partner, Teedie. Shortly thereafter, he became a parole officer for the State of Colorado and the happy couple went on to quickly build their family. He was promoted within the Colorado Department of Corrections from Associate Warden and then to Warden in Canon City. Continuing with his career through many promotions, he eventually retired as Chief Director of the Inspector Generals office in 1986 from the Department of Corrections. Alex enjoyed traveling and spending much time with his family and grandchildren after his retirement. Surviving Alex are his wife, Teedie, his five children and their spouses: Terry (Bill) Foster; Kevin (Diane) Wilson; Scott (Julie) Wilson; Brett (Beth) Wilson and DeeDee (Darren) Zent. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Lacey, Katie, Alex, Sarah, Joshua, Alexis, Lydia as well as two step grandchildren Mel and Nathan. He enjoyed two great-grand children, Myla and Brinson. Alex was preceded in death by his parents and one grandchild, Samuel. Services will be held at 10:00 am Monday, August 14th at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Interment will be held at 1:15 pm on Tuesday, August 15th at Fort Logan Cemetery, Denver, Colorado. In lieu of flowers, please direct all gifts to St Patrick’s Catholic Church or the charity of your choice.

GOAL Academy moves into larger space on Justice Center Road By Carie Canterbury The Daily Record With increasing enrollment, and just in time for the new school year, Guided Online Academic Learning Academy recently moved into the larger space needed to serve nearly 250 Fremont County students. GOAL Academy is a free, blended-learning high school. The school’s new drop-in site, located at 127 Justice Center Road, Suite M, is a consistent environment with all 28 sites across the state. The school went from a 1,600-squarefoot facility to now 3,800 square feet with plenty of room for student gatherings and a student and staff lounge area. “We were kind of bursting at the seams at that old location, and this is exactly what we needed,” Principal Alan Van Norman said. Since 2013, the learning site was located at 402 Royal Gorge Blvd. after about a year at a site on South Fifth Street. GOAL Academy started offering services in 2007 when staff met with its 40 to 50 students at coffee shops, restaurants and libraries. In 2010, about 75 students were enrolled and served by a skeleton crew that

represented math, science, English, social studies and leadership. “It was kind of like a one-room schoolhouse,” Van Norman said. “This year we are coming full circle and able to provide that level of unique academic content focus from individual staff right here. We have several math teachers, English teachers and social studies represented right here in Cañon City.” He said the Cañon City site had one of the highest graduate rates out of all five of the regions of GOAL Academy last year. Some students graduate with an associate’s degree, and several students move on to Pueblo Community College or CSUPueblo. Van Norman said learning experiences are often combined through experiential field trips and events. Students are included in local experiential education trips, as well as statewide and international trips, which count for school credits. Students have gone to Cuba, Ecuador and Costa Rica. Internships also are part of the curriculum. “Preparing them for the workforce is our mission, to build productive members of society,” Van Norman

here, GOAL has changed people’s lives. ... Curriculum is curriculum, but it’s the social/emotional support that we do that makes the difference.” GOAL Academy is a member of the Cañon City Chamber of Commerce, and the new space will be available for nonprofit groups to use in the evenings, Van Norman said. The public is invited to learn more and take a tour of the new site between the hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
