Robert Lee “Bob” Crider
In Loving Memory
Margaret “Joyce” See
June 21, 1938 ~ Aug. 16, 2017 After a courageous fight with Parkinson’s disease and its complications, Bob Crider passed away at home on Aug. 16, 2017, surrounded by his loved ones. He was born in Denver on June 21, 1938, to Rita and Charles Crider, who preceded him in death. On Aug. 21, 1978, Bob married Judith Lee Long in Raton, New Mexico and they would have celebrated 39 years of marriage on Monday. Coming from a humble background, Bob rose to become a true public servant. He served on the Denver Public School Board for 12 years, Denver City Council for 12 and Denver Auditor for four years. As a councilman, he was instrumental in the building of Denver International Airport and the Denver Convention Center. Bob played a key part in initiating the bond issue for Harrison Public School in Canon City. He was an active member of the Elks Club, Rotary Club, Knights of Columbus, Shadow Hills Golf Club, Meals on Wheels and many volunteer organizations. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, camping and “putzin”. Above all else, Bob loved his family and the time he spent with them. Bob is survived by his wife, Judith Crider; son, Robert A. (Deanna) Crider; daughter, Bernadette Crider; stepdaughters, Dawn (Mike) Burger, Shawna Brooks; ten grandchildren; four brothers, one sister, numerous extended family members and many friends. Our beloved Bob will be greatly missed by his family, friends and loved ones. Visitation, 9 a.m. followed by funeral service at 10 a.m., Monday, Aug. 21, 2017, St. John Lutheran Church, Pastor Dan Kletke officiating. Interment to follow at Mountain Vale Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Bob’s name to the Orchard of Hope Foundation, 111 N. Orchard Ave., Canon City, Co 81212 or to Sangre De Cristo Hospice-West, 601 Greenwood Ave., Canon City, CO 81212. Services have been entrusted to Wilson Funeral Home. July 11, 1941 ~ Aug. 17, 2017 Margaret “Joyce” (Stewart) See, 76, stepped into her heavenly home on Aug. 17, 2017. She was born July 11, 1941, to George and Grace (Nickerson) Stewart in Cañon City. Joyce grew up in Cañon City, where she attended local schools. As a teenager, she worked in several restaurants, including the Hiway Café, and the Red and White Cafe. She met the love of her life, Paul Arnold See whom she married on February 25, 1965. They celebrated 52 years of marriage this year. They moved to Michigan and lived there for a number of years, working for The Bells Restaurant. In the early 1980s, the family moved back to Cañon City, where she worked at Cañon Lodge Care Center, first as a cook before being promoted to supervisor in the kitchen. She often said how much the elderly people meant to her during those years, embracing them as though they were part of her family. After she retired from the Cañon Lodge, she and Paul opened up Maggie J’s Catering and ran it from her home for several years. In her later years, Joyce worked at the New Method Laundry drop off place in Florence before retiring in the 1990s. Those who knew Joyce knew that cooking was her greatest joy. Prepared with love, she would cook the family dinners for the holidays, birthdays, special occasions and for any other reason she could come up with. She loved her family dearly and was a devout Christian, trusting in her faith and God daily. She was preceded in death by her parents, George Barbour Stewart and Grace Leona Nickerson Stewart; brothers, George LeRoy Stewart, John Otis Stewart; infant brother, James Stewart; sister, Agnes Laree Stewart Stanton; son, Paul Anthony and most recently, her husband, Paul Arnold See. She is survived by sons, Mark (Marlene), Jeff (Susan), Will (Tammy), Paul Jr. (Loretta), Carl (Becca); daughter, Angel (John); numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sisters, LaDonna (Ben) Webb, Charlotte (David) Burrous; brother, Richard (Marsha) Stewart; brother-in-law, Don Stanton; sister-in-law, Shirley Stewart; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Those she leaves behind will miss her dearly. Sunrise Feb. 9, 1922 ~ Sunset Aug. 19, 2017 “But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their Clara Margarette (Dunivan) Friend, age 95. New Cañon City Dairy Queen under construction By Sara Knuth The Daily Record With plans to update its look and move closer to U.S. 50, Cañon City’s Dairy Queen is set to take a step forward by the end of this year. A new location of the restaurant is under construction and will take the place of the current site, which is just yards away. “I’m very, very excited,” said Maggie Santana-Spoden, the restaurant’s general manager. “About time, I think. Obviously, if you’ve been into my store, we get pretty busy, and I don’t have room to put everybody. So, yes, we’re very excited to see it going.” When it opens, Santana-Spoden said, she plans to hire about 30 people. “I need good, hard workers,” she said. “It’s going to be a bigger store, so it will be more employees.” Dairy Queen, which is known for its menu items that range from Blizzards to burgers, is located at 1326 Main St. Once completed, the new store will be located directly in front of the old location. Santana-Spoden said the company does not plan to tear down the former location and instead has plans to renovate it, potentially into an office. “We’re obviously going to take the Dairy Queen look away from it, make it look more like a busi-
Sara Knuth / Daily Record Construction gets underway for a new Dairy Queen, which is currently located just yards away. ness,” she said. As for the new restaurant, Santana-Spoden said the restaurant will have a more modern look, with extra space for customers and employees alike. “It’s going to be beautiful,” she said. “Everybody will be pleased.”
While she said plans could change, Santana-Spoden estimated that the project will be completed by early November, with about a week of closure planned to allow the company to move from the old location into the new one. As the restaurant plans for the
move, Santana-Spoden said the menu and hours will remain the same. “So far, I think the community is pretty excited about it,” she said. “I have a lot of regulars, and they’re very excited about it.”
Rocky Mountain Behavioral Health, Inc. offers new program By Carie Canterbury The Daily Record Thanks to a recently awarded grant, a new program offered by Rocky Mountain Behavioral Health, Inc. now is available that aims to remove barriers standing in the way of clients’ successful treatment. Recovery Campus is a recovery support approach that expands treatment beyond individual, group and family therapy. It includes frequent case management and integration of transportation and housing assistance, access to wellness and spiritual services, job coaching and training into the treatment plans of RMBH clients in recovery from substance abuse
and domestic violence. Staff includes professional therapists, physicians, case managers and peer coaches. Ray Moore and Jenni Guentcheva, the co-directors at RMBH, gave a full presentation of Recovery Campus to community partners Wednesday. They said the $291,000 grant is funded through Senate Bill 16-202, which appropriates marijuana tax dollars for substance abuse education and treatment. The funds also will help when Medicaid and other funding sources drop off, Moore said, adding that recovering from an addiction isn’t simply no longer using drugs, but it also entails healthy lifestyle changes.
Additionally, each client can receive up to $1,000 in direct financial assistance for needs as assessed by the client’s primary counselor, including transportation vouchers, car insurance assistance, housing payments, sports and wellness and coverage for job training. Advertisement Guentcheva said individuals who are stable and have support are less likely to re-offend, and this program will allow their stress to be kept under control. “We don’t have to worry about things like daily necessities because that’s removed as a problem,” Guentcheva said. She said a few years ago, about 12 percent of RMBH’s clientele
was self-referral, but last year there were very few. “This year, because of this program, the phone started ringing again with people who don’t have to be here, but want to be here,” she said. “I think this grant really gives clients hope, not only to the individuals who get treatment here but also to the families.” Sammy Burman, a board member for RMBH, said the community is in great need of a program like Recovery Campus, and she commended Moore and Guentcheva for their efforts in garnering the grant. For more information, call 719275-7650 to request an appointment or email rmbh@rmbh.org.

“Caring for the Homeless?”
The newspaper headline was, “Hike in Homeless Blamed on Legal Marijuana.” Officials at some Denver homeless shelters say the legalization of marijuana has contributed to an increase in the number of younger people living on city streets. The director of one shelter said the majority of the new kids they are seeing say they are here because of the weed. Some come hoping to find work in the marijuana industry. Some of these have felony backgrounds that prevent them from getting jobs. Others who do find work can’t make enough to pay rent in Denver’s expensive housing market. Some want to be able to use the pot for medical reasons. Others just want be able to smoke pot legally to avoid felonies. Whatever the reasons, Colorado taxpayers can look forward to footing the bill for those who can’t make it on their own. Colorado now shares the dubious distinction of being one of several states to legalize marijuana. “Rocky Mountain high” has taken on a whole new meaning. While many in our area are against pot, those in favor keep trying to make their case on supposed financial benefits. We who oppose it point out the many negative aspects we believe far outweigh the revenue brought in. The jury is still out on the health benefits of marijuana use. When legalized it becomes more available and more underage folks will try it (“I thought it was legal!”). Caring for homeless addicts is another financial burden that legalizing recreational marijuana brings. Our local benevolent agencies are already hurting. Local leaders need to see past the tantalizing dollar signs. Rio Evans is the preacher for the Cañon City Church of Christ, 1718 Franklin Avenue Office phone: 719-275-9696.
