Rosemary Solano Mrs. Rosemary Solano, daughter of the late Louie and Marina (Lucero) Baca was born Dec. 19, 1937, in Cañon City. Rosemary’s doctor did not expect her to make it through the night. He placed her in a man’s shoebox and sat her near a heater for warmth. We’re Back in Business Tops For All Screenprinting Dennis and Rita Rowe, along with their daughter, Denise Rowe-Brown have re-opened their screen printing business. Dennis and Rita originally opened Tops For All in 1983, when they sold pre-printed souvenir shirts and shirts with the heat-applied lettering and transfers. During the first year of business, they received many requests for custom screen printed shirts so they decided to be adventurous and expand the business to better serve the community. They made a trip to Long Beach, CA in 1984, where they purchased their first 4-color printer, which is still in limited operation. About a year later an artist was hired to create their own line of souvenir designs that were sold to retailers all over Colorado and a few in Wyoming and Utah necessitating the addition of a second 4-color printer. In 1988 Tops For All served over 200 wholesale accounts as well as continuing to serve the custom printing needs of Fremont County. Due to circumstances beyond their control, the difficult decision to get out of the wholesale side of the business was made in 1990. Dennis and Rita added embroidery

to the business in 2003 and continued to do custom jobs until 2009 at which time they closed the business to concentrate their energy on another business that they had invested in in 2006, Skyline Liquor. After owning Skyline Liquor for 9 ½ years and selling that business in May of this year, the Rowes have added their daughter to the team to help with custom artwork and design, marketing and technology and the three of them are excited to be back in the screen printing business. Future plans are to expand to a 6-color printer and possibly add the embroidery services back into the business. Dennis and Rita are both Canon City natives and raised their family here. “ We have seen a lot of changes in the community and have always tried to make it a better place to live,” says Rita. “We are a small business and know how we like to be treated when doing business, so we try to treat our customers with respect and fairness. No job too small.” Business hours are 8:00 A.M. to 5 P.M., Monday through Friday, call with questions or for an appointment. Phone: 719-275-8435 or email: topsforall16@gmail.com

Pueblo Community College Fremont Campus kicks off fall semester As students return to the Pueblo Community College Fremont Campus, the school hopes they’ll embody three things: grit, guts and glory. The campus kicked off the fall semester Monday with its seventh annual First Step to Success Celebration Walk. At the event, the school gave away T-shirts with this year’s theme printed on the back. “This is the year of grit, guts and glory,” said Dr. Lana Carter, dean of the Fremont Campus. “That really does, basically, set the stage for the academic year.” Just after the celebration walk, Carter spoke to around 35 new and returning students, emphasizing she wants students to feel comfortable asking for help on the campus in everything from tutoring to financial aid. “When you think about what it takes to come to school, it takes some guts,” Carter said, addressing several first-generation students. Many other students in the crowd raised their hands when she asked how many of them had families at home. “We are so ready for this semester and this year and to

be able to support you in your endeavors,” she said. This semester, Carter said she’s looking forward to student activities, including a collaboration with Cañon City High School to host a 9/11 observance Sept. 9 at Citizens’ Stadium. Collaboration with the local high school also extends past events. Eric Ingmire, director of Student Services at PCC, estimated the Fremont campus has enrolled 200 to 250 students from CCHS, Florence High School and Cotopaxi Junior-Senior High School this year. Many of those students attend PCC classes in their schools, though several others attend class at the Fremont Campus itself. Carter said that while enrollment is flat this year for students who have already graduated from high school, the school is seeing an increase in students still enrolled in high school. At the Celebration Walk, Ingmire said PCC has a lot to look forward to this year. “We’re going to have some fun this year,” he said. In October, the campus is

Community Roundup Artists’ Gallery to host First Friday event

The Artists’ Gallery invites the public to its “First Friday” monthly art event from 5-8 p.m. Sept. 2 at 416 Main St. Three local artists will be featured throughout the month, in addition to a surprise “guest artist” exhibit. Award-winning multi-media artist Sharon Conner loves to explore various media to create images that are intriguing, familiar and complicated. Sharon delights in the unexpected and “happy accidents,” appreciating the serendipitous results. Extraordinary jewelry artist Virginia Ames is showcasing her exquisitely-crafted beaded jewelry — an art for which she has great passion. Ames creates vintage-look and contemporary pieces, incorporating unusual “found objects” and re-purposing treasured jewelry pieces and watches. Truly wearable art. Primarily a painter, Pat Chace loves all forms of art. She believes that creating art is a journey that is both fun and rewarding.

Chace is always evolving—learning, experimenting, and studying everything, all the while thinking, “How can I recreate this?” The gallery’s guest artist, renowned sculptor Robert Henderson, will exhibit some of his amazing work. Dubbed the “Warbird Sculpor” by a generation of WWII veterans, Robert has chronicled the history of aviation in monumental bronze sculptures. An impressive collection of his bronze “warbird” memorials can be viewed at the “Study Hall,” a unique outdoor sculpture garden at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. Henderson sees no boundaries — his current projects not only provide beauty, but challenge thought. For more information, call (719)3454070.

Each photograph has a description with all of the available information included. Years of dedication and research are represented in this array of images, offering a glimpse into the region’s past.

“The Cost of Truth”

Solomon said, “Buy the truth and sell it not” (Proverbs 23:23). We know God’s Word is truth (John 17:17) and that the truth can make us free (John 8:32). When someone learns the truth, that one must ask: “Am I willing to pay the price that buying the truth will cost?” Jesus told a parable called “The Pearl of Great Price” that compared finding the kingdom of heaven with a merchant seeking fine pearls. Upon finding one of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought that pearl (Matthew 13:45-46). That man was willing to sell all he had in order to “buy the truth.” Before one buys the truth a question must be asked: “Am I willing to pay the price for the truth - regardless of what it may cost?” I knew an Indian princess who learned the truth and became a Christian: her family and tribe disowned her. I knew a Hindu woman who learned the truth and became a Christian: her family held a mock burial ceremony for her. Becoming a Christian may cost one friends, family or job. Sometimes it may even cost one his life: it has happened since Christianity began. Jesus spoke of that when He said, “Be faithful unto death and I will give you the crown of life” (Revelation 2:10). That warning wasn’t just for early saints: we all have seen or heard recent accounts of Christians being tortured or beheaded for their faith. The day may be coming when that happens here in the USA. Are you willing to pay that price?
