In Loving Memory Wilbur Ronald “Ron” Vickerman

Wilbur Ronald ‘Ron’ Vickerman , 75, passed away Sunday, July 30th at Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs.

Ron was born March 15, 1942 in Pueblo, CO to Wilbur and Edith (Beck) Vickerman. He met his wife Mary while teaching at Byers Jr. High in Denver and they married a year later in Greeley, CO on August 10, 1968.

Ron and Mary continued their teaching careers in Manzanola, CO and finally in the mountains of Westcliffe, CO. Ron was a master of many subjects, but specialized in the Industrial Arts of Drafting, Woodshop, Welding and Auto Mechanics and Mary taught Home Economics for an amazing 22 years.

Ron enjoyed teaching, but took an early retirement to care for his ailing parents and moved to Canon City in 1994.

He loved so many things in his life and just a few of his favorites were making jewelry, refinishing furniture, hunting, traveling and YARD SALES! He was also an avid history and geology buff and he found Colorado to be one of the most amazing places on earth.

Ron was a man of the people. He could start a conversation with anyone, any age and brighten their day.

Ron’s love for his family and his faith ran deep and he shared his wisdom with his children, grandchildren and great grandchild.

He is survived by his wife Mary, children Linda and Sandra, grandchildren Cody (Edith), Morgan and Chelsey and his great grandchild Adaline.

Sister: Christal (James) Yankovich. Sisterin-law: Donna Beauchamp. Foster Brothers: Gerome Degree and Roger Squire. Nieces/ Nephews: Debra Keasling, Scott Beauchamp, Dustin Yankovich, Janelle (Trent) Hollister. Aunts/ Uncles: Milla Vickerman and Steve (Elgetta) Hummel and numerous cousins.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents Wilbur and Edith (Beck) Vickerman and 3 brothers and 1 sister.

Services for Ron will be held at St. Michael Church in Canon City, Tuesday, August 8th beginning with a rosary @ 10:00AM followed by the funeral mass @ 10:30AM. Lunch will follow the services.

Jacqueline Diane Todd

Jacqueline Diane Todd went home to be with our Lord on Sunday, July 23, 2017.

Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, she followed her dream to move to Colorado.

Most knew her by her nickname, Jackie.

Married to Barry Todd in 1998, she was widowed in 2014.

After living in Cotopaxi, Colorado for several years, Jackie recently moved to Canon City.

Decorating her Victorian home, gardening, collecting hats, eating chocolate, and taking care of her dogs, were her favorite past times! She will be missed!

A memorial service will be held at the Cotopaxi Church at 3:00 pm, on Sunday, August 6th.

Esther V. Lombardi

Esther V. Lombardi, 86 of Pueblo West died peacefully at home on June 23, 2017 surrounded by family and friends after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.

She was born in Florence on September 2, 1930 to Gabriel and Fiorentina Grisenti both of Florence, Colorado. Esther married Gene Lombardi October 23, 1951. She lived in Florence until 2008 when she moved to Pueblo West to be with her son and grandson.

Even though Esther moved out of Florence, her heart always belong to that little town and all her friends and neighbors. She always considered Florence her home.

Esther did daycare for 27 years for over a hundred children. She loved and cared for each one like they were her own. After retiring, she volunteered at Penrose School in Penrose, Colorado. Esther enjoyed crocheting, quilting, reading the newspaper, eating out, and watching Days of Our Lives. Esther always had a smile on her face and a welcoming hug for everyone she met.

Her greatest passions were her family and her deep faith in Jesus. Esther found great peace by praying the rosary and praying with her patron saint, Saint Jude.

Esther is survived by her son, Ronald Lombardi and grandson, Aaron Lombardi both of Pueblo West. Sisterin-law, Liz Lombardi Gorley of Boise, Idaho and special friend, Oliver Busetti of Coal Creek, Colorado. She is preceded in death by her husband Gene Lombardi and sister Lena Grisenti Cornella.

A Memorial service will be at 10 A.M., Saturday, August 5, 2017 at Saint Benedict’s Catholic Church in Florence, Colorado.

Doris Jean Stuteville

Doris Jean Stuteville, 64, passed away on July 17, 2017.

She was born to Claude E and Bernice Moody on October 31, 1952 in Goodland, Kansas and was adopted and reared by Marion and Gertrude Stuteville. She was a 1971 graduate of Florence High School, of Florence, Colorado.

As a young girl she acquired her CNA in nursing and joined the US Army Reserves where she acquired her LPN and dedicated her life to kindly caring for many in nursing homes over her lifetime.

Doris is preceded in death by her parents and is survived by her daughter Trudy Elenga-Falliaux and son Earl Armentrout Jr., and her siblings Fonda Downs and Floyd Moody of Colorado, Wanda Macklin, Dennis Stuteville, and Claude Stuteville of Florida, Debra Daniels of Kansas and Jesse Simmons of Iowa.

The family of Doris wishes to extend our sincere thanks to the nurses and doctors of Skyridge Medical Center ICU.

Hubert “Lloyd” Berry

Hubert “Lloyd” Berry, 86, of Canon City passed away surrounded by his loving family and friends on July 28, 2017, in Canon City.

He was born on September 7, 1930 in Brush, Colorado to Bessie Lucille (Ragsdale) and William T. Berry. The family moved to Canon City where he met his beautiful bride to be Katy.

He graduated in 1948 from Canon City High School and went on to play football at Northern Colorado University and then transferred and graduated from Denver University.

He married the love of his life, Catherine (Katy) Berry on December 9, 1951, in Canon City and they had 4 sons.

Lloyd was the heart of Bill Berry Motor Company for over 40 years; this was more than a career it was a lifestyle.

He was involved and held offices in many community clubs and organizations such as Lions Club, Elks Club, Jaycees, Chamber of Commerce, Fremont Sanitation and Shadow Hills. He was a pilot, enjoyed fishing, golfing and spending time with his family and friends.

Lloyd is preceded in death by his beloved wife Katy and both his parents.

He is survived by his sons, Bob (Rhonda) of Brookings, Oregon, Dave (Sharon) Berry, of Scottsdale, Arizona, Ken Berry of Canon City, Don (Sharon) Berry of Canon City. One brother, Bill (Marianne) Berry of Sun City West, Arizona.

Lloyd lived for his grandchildren, Carissa (Harold) Dickerson, Ryan Berry, Nick (Becky) Berry, Breanna Berry, Alex (Melissa) Berry, Devin (Amanda) Berry and James Berry.

Lloyd is also survived by his eight great grandchildren. Penelope, Piper and Presley Dickerson, Jade Berry, Hudson and Reece Berry, Peyton and Dylan Berry, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his family, he is survived by countless friends including special friend Sandy Booth.

Services will be held on Wednesday, August 2nd at 2:00 PM at the Abbey Community Center with Pastor Wayne Dickenson officiating.

Private inurnment will be held at Lakeside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.

Carolyn Marie Barnes

Carolyn Marie Barnes of Williamsburg passed away on July 2, 2017 at her home. A celebration of life was held on July 7, 2017.

Briefly First round of Citizen Surveys in the mail for Cañon City residents The first round of National Citizen Survey’s for Cañon City now is in the mail. The City of Cañon City asks residents to take time to fill out and return the surveys in order to give input and insight on the city’s strengths and how officials can work to improve the community and city government.

Addresses were sampled at random from a list of all addresses from the post office. This is a standard service offered by the post office; it is not a city government file and no household member is named in the file. The resident of the property should complete the survey.

The sample was designed to be as representative as possible of the population of the city, so by

sending copies of the survey to people who request a copy, that would skew the sample and make the results less meaningful.

An online opt-in survey will be available to citizens who did not receive a paper survey. More information on this will be available at the end of August.

Fair gatekeeper Ary retires

Grant Ary — also fondly known by 4-Hers and their parents as ‘Grant the Gate Guy’ — was honored Sunday for his 16 years of service to the 4-H Horse program at Pathfinder Park.

Ary for the last 16 years has been the guy who has opened the gate for every horse show conducted in conjunction with the Fremont County 4-H Fair. He not only made sure the competitors made it to the arena when their name was called, but he also has made certain they entered the arena with a smile and a boost of confidence.

Now that Ary and his wife JoAnne’s four children, Ashley, Mitchell, Alexa and Amanda, have aged out of the 4-H program, Ary closed the gate for the final time Sunday.

“I want to give the same opportunity that I’ve had for so long to be involved with kids, to kind of pass the baton to somebody else and let them take that on,” he said.

Ary said he committed to his children that he would be involved in whatever activities they chose to be involved in while growing up.

That’s a promise he kept. “(I did) a lot of coaching of teams through the rec district and competitive level, and they were in 4-H,” he said. “This is where they needed help so I stepped up and it’s what I’ve been doing.”

Parents surprised Ary on Sunday with a cake and a handmade gift created by Tony Telck, a figurine of a cowboy and a moveable gate made out of horseshoes.

“We wanted to let him know we really appreciate what he has done,” said Shanda Telck, a representative for the 4-H Horse program. “Every kid has a personal connection to him — he has a personal nickname for them, or a joke or funny or positive word for them, and he’s always so upbeat and fun.”

Ary said now that he’s retired from gate duties, there still won’t be a lack of things to help fill his time. He said there still will be plenty to do on the family’s farm and ranch.

Residents participate in homemade wine contest

Whether a person makes wine as a hobby or as a full-time job, Fremont County residents have gathered for 12 years to have their wine critiqued and judged by their peers.

On Tuesday night, red and white, sweet and dry wines were all represented as about 40 entries were present at the homemade contest, which is part of the Fremont County Fair.

Winemaker for the Winery at the Holy Cross Abbey Jeff Stultz was one of four judges for the contest. He said he started out as a contestant in 2003, which is when he also started to work at the winery.

“I entered my plum wine then,” he said, which awarded him with a second place prize.

Stultz said he began judging the contest in either 2005 or 2006.

“Cañon City and Pueblo have a huge winemaking presence,” Stultz said, explaining how many Italians migrated to the area, and when they did, they brought their winemaking skills with them.

He said many people in Fremont County make their own wine, and many of them were not even present at Tuesday night’s contest.

“It takes a lot to have your wine criticized,” he said.

Stultz explained how the climate in the region is favorable for winemaking and for growing grapes.

He said he has found areas that grow grapes native to French-American wine and Italian wines.

“For 100 years, Cañon City was the fruit basket for the area,” he said, adding that the area supplied many of the coal towns with its fruit.

When asked if making wine at home was a difficult thing to do, Stultz said that he has two degrees: one specifically for growing grapes and one for winemaking.

“It’s extremely difficult to do ... some people get their recipes off the internet, but a lot of local people make their wine from recipes passed down in their families,” he said.

One of Tuesday’s contestants Lynn Houghton said he’s been making wine for maybe more than a dozen years.

He said he’s retired, so he has a lot of time for winemaking.

Houghton said he uses carboys, which is a five- to six-gallon jug to age his wine at home, and he doesn’t grow his own grapes but buys them from various places.

“I guess I just enjoy the process. You start with something and then create something new with it,” he said.

Stultz said the locals making their own wine get their ingredients from the same place in town, which is Hilltop Market, because it is the only place in town to buy winemaking supplies.

He said at home, using a carboy, he could make a good red wine and that is what many of Tuesday’s contestants do.

Participants compete in Fremont County Fair’s dog show

By Skylar Edwards Special to the Daily Record Dogs of different breeds and sizes competed in the Fremont County Fair’s dog show on Wednesday alongside competitors of a variety of ages.

The show, which was at the First Southern Baptist Church in Florence, critiqued the dogs on different events, including showmanship, rally and obedience.

For Sara Avila, 18, participating in the show was bittersweet. After about nine years of competition, she’s finishing up her last year.

“I started competing in dog shows when I was 8 years old,” Avila said. “This is my ninth year competing, as well as my last, because I am aging out.”

Avila said she has competed with her dog Stetson for nine years and three years with her other pup Katie.

“Stetson doesn’t like showmanship, but rather obedience and rally, whereas Katie likes showmanship,” she said.

Avila also said she hopes to compete at the Colorado

State Fair this year, just as she has for the past eight years — she has been grand champion for Colorado for the last five years in a row in different categories.

As she prepares to end her time in the competition, Avila is looking toward her future, with plans to attend Colorado State University-Pueblo in the fall.

Still, she always will have a connection to dog shows.

“I will continue dog showing every now and then in the future because it is still a passion of mine,” Avila said, adding that her time spent helping younger competitors inspired her career choice. “I started teaching all the classes for the kids, helping them out and even taking them to a few shows with me.”

She added: “I am actually going to college to be a teacher because I love the kids.”

Gina Shumate, the show’s assistant leader said, many of those competitors have qualified for state after practicing once a week since January.

“Be Restored”

One Sunday when the invitation was extended, a woman who had been “out-of-duty” for many years came forward saying, “I’ve come home. I want to be restored.” What did she mean by that? To “restore” means to return or bring back to a former status or condition.

This dear lady was a baptized believer who had fallen away from Christ. She was like some of those in the church at Ephesus who had “left their first love” (Revelation 2:4).

Though some today say once one is saved he is always saved and that it is impossible to fall away, the Scriptures plainly teach otherwise. Those at Ephesus who had left their first love were told to repent and return to where they were before they fell. Faithful Christians are instructed to try to help restore one who has fallen away: “Brethren, if anyone is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, looking to yourself lest you also be tempted” (Galatians 6:1). Anyone can be overtaken by sin - it has been a problem from the beginning. The Devil is in the business of making sin look good. The Bible records many examples of good people who were deceived and became his victims. When that happens, the right thing to do is to quickly repent and be restored to your former condition. If you read this, and after careful examination should find that you need to be restored to your former spiritual well-being, we would encourage you to return to your first love: while there is still time.
