Lloyd Doten Bush

Lloyd Doten Bush Lloyd Doten Bush, died peacefully at his home in Cañon City, on Sunday, July 24, 2016, at the age of 91. Doten is survived by his partner Peggy Sanford of Longmont; children Belinda Avdek and Bob Bush (Dianne), both of Cañon City; brother Kenneth Bush of Bloomington, Illinois; granddaughter Robin Scholz (Ted) of Chicago, Illinois and their sons Teddy and Henry; granddaughter Tory Redmond (Peadar) of Brooklyn, NY and their sons Liam and Jude; granddaughter Lindsay Hayden of Durango and her son, Dakota, and granddaughter Allison Palmasano (Andy) of Denver. Doten was preceded in death by his parents Lloyd and Margaret, his brother Marshall, his aunt Lillian Dines, and his ex-wife May. Lloyd Doten Bush was born on April 22, 1925, in DeKalb County, Illinois to Lloyd W. and Margaret (nee Braucher) Bush. He attended Dwight Township High School in Dwight, Illinois, enjoying success as a quarterback on the football team, point guard on the basketball team, and as a drummer in the swing band. Doten graduated early from high school in January 1943 so he could follow his older brother Marshall into the US Navy’s V-12 officer training program at Purdue University in West Lafayette Indiana. While at Purdue, Doten met his future wife, May Jack, a cheerleader for the Purdue football and basketball teams. May, and Doten’s classmates in the V-12 program, including

life-long friends Milt Lauenstein and Virgil Trice, helped Doten cope with the tragic loss his older brother Marshall to a swimming accident at the Purdue natatorium in 1944. Doten graduated with a Chemical Engineering degree from Purdue in October of 1945 and was commissioned shortly thereafter as an ensign in the US Navy. After his hitch in the Navy, Doten began work as a Chemical Engineer at Marathon Paper Corporation in Appleton, Wisconsin. Doten and May Jack were married in 1947 and lived for short periods on the Gold Coast of Chicago, Denver, and the plains of West Texas. In 1948 Doten returned with May to his hometown of Dwight, Illinois to manage a part of the family business. While looking after the feed mill and chicken hatchery operations, Doten renewed friendships with his high school friends and became a valued community leader in Dwight. Doten and May welcomed their two children, Belinda and Bob during this period in Dwight. When the feed business dwindled in the late 1950’s as family farms were consolidated into corporate farms, Doten and May relocated to Denver where Doten established his career as a marketing rep for data processing systems, and later as a management consultant. In Denver, Doten was active in the Unitarian Church where he valued his friendships with Reverend Dick Henry and future Governor Dick Lamm. Career opportunities for Doten took the family to the Milwaukee area and residence in Thiensville, Wisconsin for nine years. With the children graduated from high school, Doten and May moved back to Colorado where Doten worked in a small business with his friend, Bob

Striebe. Doten finished his working career in commercial real estate and management consulting for small businesses in in Boulder County. Doten and May worked hard to provide enrichment opportunities for their children, including musicals performed at Cheesman Park in Denver, garden plots at the Denver Botanical Gardens, skiing at what were then the rustic mining town of Breckenridge, and Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts. They were active in school activities – Doten served one year as President of the Teller Elementary School PTA. Doten’s golden years, over 30 of them, were focused on a loving relationship with his partner, Peggy Sanford. Doten and Peggy enjoyed many contented years in Longmont until poor health forced Doten to relocate, in 2011, near his children in Canon City. Doten lived with the friendly and caring residents at the Royal Gorge Manor until his passing. A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 4, 2016, at the Holt Chapel of the Garden, 806 Macon Ave., in Cañon City, with a reception to follow at the Royal Gorge Manor, 1122 N. 15th St. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Doten’s life. Wilbur Lewis “Chris” Christensen Wilbur Lewis “Chris” Christensen, 92, of Canon City passed away peacefully at his home on July 28, 2016. He was born in Greybull, Wyoming on April 7, 1924 to Oscar and Olive (McLallen) Christensen. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II in the Pacific theater. On October 16, 1944, he and Betty Sullivan were united in marriage in Norfolk, Virginia. They were happily married for 71 years. And together raised four children. Chris was a charter member of the Evangelical Free Church and was one of its original founding members. He was raised on a farm in Fowler, Colorado and loved gardening and working in his yard. He even had his own garden this spring and summer. Chris was a successful businessman and owned his own realty firm, Mr. Real Estate. He sold the com-

pany and retired in 1982. Chris was loved by many and will be dearly missed by his family and those near to him. He is survived by his loving wife, Betty (Sullivan) Christensen; children, Carol (Joel) Lovett, Jerry (Marilyn) Christensen, Connie (Jim) Penturf, Bill (Pam) Christensen; 12 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; sisters, Noraly Thomas, Shirley Anderson, Shannon Costello; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and twin sister, Jeanette Bandy. Memorial service, 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 3, 2016, Evangelical Free Church, 3000 E. Main St. in Canon City. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the E. Free Church in the name of Chris Christensen. Arrangements are under the care of Holt Family Funeral Home.

Larry Merlino

Larry Merlino passed away August 1, 2016 in Canon City. He was a dear friend and liked by many. He will be deeply missed by his family at Century 21 Canon Land & Investment Co. where he worked for many years. At his request, no services were held. May he rest in peace.

Peggy Sue Townsend At the age of 59, Peggy Sue Townsend passed peacefully into Heaven’s garden following a lengthy illness. She was a loving mother, grandmother, daughter, aunt, sister and friend. Peggy leaves behind her daughter, Heidi Jost of Florence; sons, Aaron (Nicole) Jost and Brandon Davies both of Canon City; Parents Thomas and Tanny

Cooper of Westcliffe; grandchildren; Saben, Destenie and Ian; sister Carol Patterson and Nancy Cooper of Somers UT; Sharyll Copper of Denver; and brother Art (Jenny) Baker of Idaho Falls, ID. Also left behind to grieve are numerous nieces, nephews, and friends who will miss her deeply. Cremation was performed by Holt Funeral Home with the spreading of ashes by the family at a later date. If I Should Go If I should go tomorrow, It would never be goodbye, for I have left my heart with you, so don’t ever cry. Charles Alexander Wilson Charles Alexander Wilson passed away June 8, 2016, in the Progressive Care Center in Canon City. Charlie was born Oct. 27, 1927, in Victor, Colorado, to Robert Alexander and Grace (Anderson) Wilson. He lived in Florence, until he had a stroke two years ago. Oldest of seven children, they were raised on the family ranch called Sunny Side Ranch, outside of Victor. Charlie as a child helped his

father around the ranch after school, he helped break horses. He loved to hunt and fish, he loved to take his nieces and nephews fishing. He loved the holiday when the family could get together and he would video tape all of us. Preceded in death are his parents; sisters, Mary Ann Van Alstyne, Elizabeth (Betty) Luke; brothers, Emmett Orville Wilson, Robert Irwin Wilson Jr. Charlie is survived by his devoted nieces; Sharon Nordstrom, Brenda Wilson, Becky Tomek; brothers, John Williams Wilson, Clarence Leander Wilson; and many nieces and nephews. “What is Truth?” (Part 1)

That was the question asked by Pilate (a Roman governor) after Jesus told him He had come into the world to bear witness to the truth (John 18:37-38). It seemed more of a sarcastic comeback than a question, implying Pilate wasn’t sure the truth could be known. What is truth? Truth is that which is actual and real, as opposed to that which is a lie, false or imagined. Truth is a body of objective facts versus subjective feelings, emotions or opinions. Most of us would admit to having believed something untrue at one time or another. Our faith should be based on reliable facts rather than on feelings. Jesus said, “God’s Word is truth” (John 17:17). He said, “If you abide in my Word, then are you truly my disciples, and you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:31-32). He also said the devil is “a liar and the father of lies” (John 8:44). Satan deceived Eve with a lie and deception has worked very well for him ever since. To say, “I know because I feel it in my heart” is risky because feelings can be wrong. The only safe guide is God’s Word and to say, “I know because the Bible tells me so.” Even so, many base their religious beliefs on feelings or traditions rather than facts. It may not always be easy to accept the truth, but to say, “I know that’s what the Bible says - but that’s not what I’ve always believed” is to risk your most valuable possession - your soul!
