In Loving Memory

Katherine B. Adcock

Katherine B. Adcock, 73, of Cañon City took new residency in Heaven on Sept. 4, 2016. She was born in Lamar on Nov. 12, 1942, to Charles and Elayne Largent. She was raised in and graduated from Florence. She then moved to Colorado Springs and attended Blair Business College, graduating to become a Medical Secretary in 1962. She was employed Katherine B. by Swedish Adcock Hospital in Denver, and private practice of Dr. “K” in Pacifica, CA. She met the love of her life, Loren Adcock while living in Denver and married in October 1964. They moved to San Bruno, California shortly thereafter. Kay loved to entertain and was an excellent host. She indeed was a Gourmet Cook. She passed her love of cooking on to her sons as well as her love of music. Kay and Loren loved to travel. Their love of travel took them to many destinations, Australia, New Zealand, Marco Island in Florida and many trips to the Hawaiian Islands, as well as many road and camping trips. They moved back to Colorado upon Loren’s retirement from United Airlines in 1997, where they quickly became a part of the

community. Kay was very generous with her time, volunteering at St. Thomas Moore Progressive Care Center, Federal Tax Relief Program for Seniors, Board member and driver of Friendly Visitors, President of Cañon City AARP Chapter, Part of the Golden Age Center and a volunteer at the Federal Commodity Program. Kay also had a bountiful garden that she loved to share. Kay never met a child she didn’t like, she shared her motherly demeanor with all. Kay had a love of life and always was ther to lend a helping hand. She’ll be long remembered for being a gracious host, and a loving and caring person. She is survived by her two sons, Philip Adcock of Meridian, Idaho, Roger Adcock of Cañon City, Grand Daughter Amanda Adcock of Meridian, Idaho, two sisters Dorothy (Ray) Littig of Cañon City, Kim Roman of Cañon City, brothers Robert Largent (Robinette) of Bakersfield, California, George Largent (Jean) of Oak Creek Grade, and two sisters in laws Carolyn and Deanna Largent of Denver. Many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Preceded in death by her parents, her husband Loren and brother Leon and Paul Largent. A celebration of life will be at 11 a.m., Friday, September 9, 2016 at the Living Word Foursquare Gospel Church, 1710 Mariposa Road, Cañon City (Dawson Ranch), Colorado. In lieu of flowers donations to the Orchard of Hope Foundation, Cañon City is appreciated.

Church plans rededication ceremony A rededication ceremony to celebrate the permanent establishment of the 1st United Methodist Church in Cañon City (FUMC) will take place Sept. 18 immediately following the 11 a.m. classic service in the Sanctuary at 801 Main St. in Cañon City. FUMC was the first church founded in Cañon City, according to Captain B. F. Rockafellow’s History of Fremont County, boasting 10 members in the winter of 1860. It was not established at that time because the Civil War drained the population. The church was permanently established in 1866 during a period when Cañon City was one of the most agriculturally productive centers in the Midwest due to

Miller Light & MGD

irrigation ditches. The sanctuary contains over 20 beautiful stained glass windows, most dedicated in the late 1800s to pillars of the community. Discover the stories of why these individuals were honored with a window. The lovely stained glass skylight measures almost 13 feet in diameter. Please join in celebrating this milestone on Sept. 18. It will be catered by Classic County Catering, Inc. and we will have many door prizes and giveaways. Take a tour and learn about the colorful past and Wild West pastors. Additional information is available at www. canonumc.org. Tours are available by appointment. Call (719) 2750681.

Local family business still going strong For Bunten Orchard, farming always has been a way of life. In 1910, Virgil Bunten’s grandfather, John Bunter bought the farm and slowly grew the orchard business. By 1931, Virgil’s father planted cherries and apples across half the property. When Virgil’s father, Robert John Bunten died in 1943, he returned home from the service in the Army during World War II to help his mother maintain the orchard. In 1953, Virgil married Margaret Ghensi and they continued on with the business. Virgil said he always worked hard to provide for his family, having a full time job with the United States Post Office and working the orchard during his time off. Then in 1961, Virgil decided to upgrade the business and plant a variety of apples and cherries across the entire property. Originally, the orchard had fullsize trees, but during the upgrade, Virgil converted to small semidwarf trees, which allowed for more trees to be planted. This made the orchard more efficient for the business and allowed for it to double its inventory.

Today, Bunten Orchard offers a variety of apples, including McIntosh, Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Jonathans, Fuji, Ben Davis, as well as newly planted Ruby Mac, September Wonders and Honey Crisp, which should be available during the 2017 harvest. The apple trees take about five years to fully mature, but with the harsh weather conditions the past few seasons, some orchards have lost trees because of damage caused by the November 2014 Polar Vortex. The average harvest is in September and October, but some trees start as early as late August. Bunten Orchard apples are hand picked and sorted and personally inspected individually. This gives a personal touch to their inventory that tells their customers they are picking the best quality for them. During the past few years, Bunten Orchard has been operated by Virgil’s daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Dale Johnson. The couple is happy and grateful to continue the family business. Their goals for the future are to offer Fremont County residents the best quality for each

Sara Schimpf/Cañon City Shopper

Debbie and Dale Johnson operate Bunten Orchard at 1832 Pinon Ave. For more information, call (719) 431-3470. customer. They hope to have more than 100 trees eventually and want to expand their inventory to include grapes in the future. With the grape expansion, they could supply local wineries with their crops. The family says the community always has been welcoming and supportive of their business, giving them the best customers.

They said local festivals also have boosted business, especially the Blossom Festival and Apple Day in Penrose. Bunten Orchard is located at 1832 Pinon Ave. in the Brookside Area. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday through Monday. For more information, call (719) 431-3470 or look them up on Facebook.

“Truth or Consequences”

God wants all men to come to the knowledge of the truth and be saved (1 Timothy 2:4). He does not wish for any to perish but for all to repent (2 Peter 3:9). God will help those who seek truth to find it (Matthew 7:7). But what of those who reject the truth and would rather believe a lie? “And for this cause (because they received not the love of the truth that they might be saved) God sends them a working of error, that they should believe a lie, that they might all be judged who believed not the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness” (2 Thessalonians 2:10-12). The passage is clear: if one insists on rejecting the truth of God’s Word in order to persist in a career of unrighteousness, then God will allow (and even help) that one to be lost. God is loving and patient but there is a limit to His patience. His goodness and patience are for a reason: to lead us to repentance (Romans 2:4). When His goodness fails to bring repentance, God will eventually “give up” and let man reap the consequences of his sin. Isn’t that what happened at The Flood? God’s patience with mankind finally ran out when “He saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth and that every imagination of the thought of his heart was only evil continually” (Genesis 6:5). If someone asks, “How could a loving God ever punish anyone?” the answer is clear: He can and will - but only after that one has continually refused to obey the truth! Harvest Fest brings California wine tradition to Cañon City By Sara Knuth Daily Record

When Sally Davidson moved to Cañon City from the California Wine Country 15 years ago, something was missing. Davidson, the winery’s marketing director, was just beginning her work at the Winery at Holy Cross Abbey, and for the first year, she wouldn’t be attending the Sonoma County Harvest Fair, a three-day wine festival. “The first year we were open, I was so depressed that I was missing Harvest Festival,” she said. “I was really just so down in the dumps.” So, she and her ex-husband decided to bring the tradition to Cañon City by hosting the Winery at Holy Cross Abbey’s inaugural Harvest Festival. Fifteen years later, the festival has grown into an event that Brandon Hopper / Daily Record hosts thousands of guests annually at the winery, located at 3011 A bottle of the special edition Happy E. U.S. 50 in Cañon City. The Harvest Festival, which is Sept. 24-25 on the winery’s Harvest during the annual Harvest Fest in 2013 at the Winery at Holy grounds, is set to kick off the fall season with bands, roasting Cross Abbey. chiles, food, vendors and samples of each of their wines. “All of our wines are served,” Davidson said, adding that everyone who drinks wine purchases a commemorative wine glass. They also receive tickets that allow them to get a sample of each variety, served in the glasses. “People have been collecting them for the past 14 years,” she said. Davidson said the event starts when Abbot Kenneth Hein, the Abbey’s former abbot, blesses the harvest. Shelly Hawkins, vendor coordinator for the event, said the festival also will feature art, jewelry, dips, pasta, spices and more. One vendor, Davidson said, will serve fresh, frozen salmon flown in from Alaska. Other food vendors serve items ranging from fajitas to Hawaiian food. Before the festival officially begins, the winery will host the Winemaker’s Dinner at the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park. Davidson said attendees should make reservations ahead of time by calling the winery at (719) 276-51910. Throughout the festival, musical performers will include Hammerstadt Fusion of the Soul, a band based in Colorado Springs; Deja Bluz, a rock band from Cañon City; Mistura Bela, a Brazilian and Latin jazz band; and the Inman Brothers Band, a rock band based in Colorado Springs. Additionally, Ed Sealover, a Colorado writer, will be at the event Saturday. Davidson said the event is a chance to take in a fall scene, with roasting chile wafting through the air as music plays. “It just moves me to my core,” Davidson said. “It’s just a big party we put on in Fremont County.”

Honoring the Past

Florence ready for 2016 Pioneer Day celebrations

By Sarah Matott Daily Record Originally created as a way to honor the town’s history and the pioneers who settled there, the Pioneer Day Festival in Florence has grown into a weekend celebration, with activities for everyone to enjoy. Always the third Saturday in September, the 89th annual Pioneer Day celebration begins Sept. 16 and ends Sept. 18 and includes a variety of things to do, such as a parade, crafts, music, vendors and more. “It is, I guess a festival that

kicks of the fall season here,” said parade and event organizer Rich Burleson. Burleson, who has been involved with organizing the Pioneer Day celebration for 10 years, said that the festival still recognizes the pioneers who to settle in Florence, but it grown to include many other things, such as the Junktique and the tractor pull. “My main focus is organizing the parade,” he said. As of Sept. 7, Burleson said that he had 120 entries for the Pioneer Day Parade. Burleson also suggested that more people may be extra excited for this year’s parade because of the Netflix movie, “Our Souls at Night,” announcing their intent to film part of the parade. “I think maybe that caused a little more interest than normal; people may be signing up in hopes

to, in some way, be part of that film,” he said. “From what I’ve heard, they will be filming around town that day and parts of the parade, but I don’t know anymore then that.” The theme for this year’s parade will be “Remember When,” which could offer a variety of different floats and trucks featured in the parade, Burleson said. “The event is just a big event. It didn’t start that way, but it has certainly grown,” Burleson said. In addition to the parade, other events taken place for the Pioneer Day Celebration include plenty of vendors at Pioneer Park, a coal car race and a chance to meet Denver Broncos Alumni at the Florence Brewing Company. “All is well. It will be pretty busy in town next weekend, and there will be plenty of entertainment for everyone,” he said.

Residents serve up apple pie for the 80th annual Apple Day festival in Penrose.

A Penrose Tradition By Sarah Matott Daily Record Every year, the changing of the seasons is celebrated in Fremont County with a number of festivals that signal the arrival of fall. However, only one can promise a free piece of apple pie to all who attend. The 81st annual Apple Day celebration is from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 1 and the event will be what it is every year — an event that has become a traditional and nostalgic filled day. Misty Dawn, with the Penrose Chamber of Commerce, said that every year Apple Day is pretty much the same, and every year, they have thousands of people attend to take part in the festivities, which include a pancake breakfast, games, a parade and an apple pie contest. “Our event has always been the first weekend in October, and we always have it,” Dawn said.

Dawn, who has been helping with Apple Day since 1998, said that the event has stayed the same because that’s what everyone expects. She also explained that unlike past years, the apple orchards haven’t produced as large as a crop as they hoped, but despite the lack of apples, it won’t prevent the town from putting on Apple Day. “Some years we have good years, and some years we don’t. It’s sad, because that’s what we are known for, but Apple Day will still take place because it’s always been part of this town,” Dawn said. Dawn said that last year, a lot of the apple orchards were damaged because of some disease that effected fruit crops. She said that despite that diminishing their crop, it won’t stop them from having Apple Day. “Colon Orchards always donates to us, and then we will get anymore apples we need from elsewhere,” she said.

The day begins with the Apple Pie Contest, which is judged by the Fremont County Commissioners. “The winning pies are then auctioned off, and then the rest of them are given away for free to all who attend,” Dawn said. Dawn said that in addition to any pie entered into competition, organizers will bake enough Apple Pie to feed thousands of attendees. “We get those great, big pans and bake large pans of Apple Pie for the crowds,” Dawn said, thinking that they possibly bake 20 to 30 of those pans. One new thing people can look forward to, Dawn said, is this year a firework show will be put on that evening in the park. She said the Penrose Parks and Recreation provided the fireworks for Apple Day and that it will a fun new addition to the day. For more information about Apple Day, call the Penrose Chamber of Commerce at (719) 372-3994.

Present By Carie Canterbury Daily Record

There is plenty to do, see and discover during the Fremont Fall Heritage Days that runs Sept. 10 to Oct. 15, with the Fall Festival Weekend slated for Oct. 8-10, all across Fremont County. Fremont Fall Heritage Days events and activities are intended to help inform area residents about the area’s heritage and attract visitors to the region to enjoy experiences here. This is the third year the event officially has been formalized. It was held previously by the Fremont Stones ‘n

Bones and other volunteers. Nelson said the Heritage Commission and the Fremont County Tourism Council decided this would be an opportune event to increase heritage tourism and tell about the history of Fremont County. Events and activities celebrate Fremont County’s heritage, history, geology and paleontology. “It is an opportunity for Fremont County residents to celebrate the heritage of our area and learn more about it,” said Jim Nelson, co-chair of the Fremont Fall Heritage Days Steering Committee. “It’s also an opportunity for visitors to the

region to understand all of the interesting history that we’ve got here.” He said one of the most popular events is the Big Horn Sheep Canyon Geology Tour, set for Oct. 15 that departs from PCC-Fremont Campus. A volunteer geologist describes the geology of the canyon from Cañon City to the Salida area and back. “It’s fascinating geology,” Nelson said. “Doing it in the bus gives people a chance to actually look at what he is talking about and stop from time to time to examine significant geological features.” New this year, Skyline Theater will feature the Fremont Olde Timey Film Festival at the Skyline Cinema, Oct. 7-14, featuring movies that were filmed in Fremont County and the vicinity. Films lined up so far include The Great K & A Train Robbery with Tom Mix (the only silent film); The Cowboys with John Wayne and Slim Pickins with one scene filmed here; The Brothers O’Toole with John Astin, Pat Carroll, Lee Meriwether and Hans Conried; and several others pending. “It will run for seven days, matinees and evening performances,” Nelson said. “It should be new, different and exciting.” There also will be several events focused around Marshall and Amanda Felch. “Marshall was involved in early dinosaur excavation, they were both involved in the Civil War then early residents of Fremont County along with the Rudds and Griffins,” Nelson said. The annual Fall Heritage Days and the Fall Festival are sponsored by the Fremont County Heritage Commission, Fremont County Historical Society and the Royal Gorge Regional Museum & History Center. Nelson said a few events will take place in November, as well. See Store for Details For more information or to see the complete list of events, visit www.fremontheritage.com.
