Drivingeconomicand charitableimpact: TheAscendant Golf Tournament boosts Northern Coloradoand supports localnonprofits

“Ourmission is simple:Weare dedicatedto making an impact in ourcommunity through giving back tournament proceedsalong with assistingspecific charitable initiatives.”

The Ascendant Golf Tournament at TPC Colorado in Berthoud has been an economic boon for Northern Colorado since it joined theKorn Ferry Tour in September of 2018.

And while many area hotels, restaurants and other businesses have been beneficiaries of the tournament, organizers havealsoworked diligently to include and aidanumber of nonprofitsand charitable organizations over the years.

“This event has been able to donate to more than 30 organizations ranging across the Front Range since 2019,”said tournamentmanager Alyx Donahue. “Our missionis simple:Weare dedicated to making an impact in our community throughgiving back tournament proceeds along with assisting specific charitable initiatives.”

Donahue sited the impressive support the tournament, golfers and organizers havereceived as someofthe motivation behind finding ways to help others.

“This community and state has been so great to us that we want to be ableto help different organizations tell their stories at our event and be able to createlasting relationshipswith them,” Donahue said. “Thereare some charities that are close to the heart of the staff, TPC Colorado and ownership, but we also ask our partners who they support and see howwecan get involved.”

Donahue noted afew of the charities the tournament has been able to donate

to, including First Tee of Green Valley Ranch, Veterans Community Project, Berthoud Adaptive Park, Life for the Innocent, Alliance for Suicide Prevention, House of NeighborlyServices, NoCo CARES, Community Food Share of Boulder County and Folds of Honor, among others.

Besides just raising money, the Ascendant workstoraise awareness and helpbring together supporters and those in need.

“For instance, we have apartner that donates to Folds of Honorbut wanted to tellthe story of Foldsof Honor to get the fullimpact of thisorganization,” Donahue said. “Wedecided to do an activation on Hole 13 –which is the longest par 5onPGA TOUR (773 yards!) –to honor the 13 folds in aflag. We toldthe story along the cart path of what each fold meant and how to folditproperly.

“Wealso hadabirdie counter, sohowever many birdies were on the made on the 13th hole, Xamountof money was donated. Isay X amount because anyone can pledge adifferent amountof money to be donated. Some wouldpledge$5or$10 for each birdie. We received a lot ofincredible feedback from that activation from spectators, partners and Folds of Honor.

Donahue said within the last two years the Ascendant hasdonated more than $20,000 to Folds of Honor.

So, whether you’re a casual fan, an avid follower or even aparticipant, keep your eyes peeled for ways the tournament (and you) can helpout some worthy causes.

For those up-and-coming golfers hopingtomake the big time, or those journeymen remainingin the hunt for the big money of the PGATOUR, players on the Korn Ferry Tour get alittle different experience on their trip to Berthoudfor The Ascendant.

Organizers strive to provide astay at aprivate home for each of the players, caddies and even some spouses and family members, as opposed to a more standard stay at an area hotel.

The traditionstartedback in 2019 but, of course, took acouple years off during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was brought back in 2021.

season,”Ascendant Event Coordinator Alyx Donahue said in an email.

Donahue went on toshare thestory of one player and his caddie who became close with his host family. The golfer endeduptakingthe host’skids to the pool and even invited the entire family to his wedding.

Andthe players seem to appreciate it. While much of the time during the 26-week season finds the players and caddies living in hotels,

they can end up spending theentire week with ahost family while here for the Ascendant.

“Players are so gracious andappreciativeofthe housing,”said Erika DeMars, also with The Ascendant. “They are here all week for theevent. They arrive on thatMondayof theevent, and if they make thecut, they’re here until Sunday. Afull week in a hotel adds up.”

Finding homesfor hundreds of people is quite theundertaking, too.In 2022, for instance, 68 different homesinBerthoud, Loveland, Fort Collins, Longmont, Windsor and other northern Colorado neighborhoods were used. Shiftingschedules, depending on how players do at other events, can leave organizers scrambling. DeMars said initially gettingthe housing organized wasachallenge.

“Each year we’velearned what worked andwhat didn’t, and we debrief after theeventtochangeor

streamlineour processes,” DeMars said.“We’re lucky that all thehostsare flexible andunderstanding when we do makechanges.”

Organizers also havea large poolofpeople and neighbors from which to draw. DeMars said they initially reach out to people whohavehousedgolfers previously, thentheystart sending outinformationwith ahost sign-uplink in daily messagingtoTPC Colorado members, area residents andeven surrounding golf courses.

Regardless, players, caddies and their families seem to appreciate having ahometolive in during their stay
