JULY 2016
MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR:GETTING BY GIVING Kyle Snyder Land Title Guarantee Company
2016 Chamber Chair
A quick Google search for “business plan template” returned over 10 millions results. Obviously I didn’t have time to sift through them all, but I did take a look at several of the top results. While each of them included a section on marketing, none of them even contained the word “community.” I guess many of the new, young entrepreneurs in
Longmont didn’t get their business plan templates from an internet search because so many of them seem to have included a section on community at, or near, the top of their plans. Over the last year or two many people have noticed, commented and now are teaching the practice of including community as a major part of their business building. A few very prominent cases are those of Wyatt’s Wet Goods and Wibby Brewing. Before either business opened their doors, I felt like I knew them... it’s because I did. A major part of their marketing was to start well before they even had product to sell. They created a buzz, they were all over social media with updates that allowed us to see their progress. They gave away shirts,
pint glasses, joined the Chamber, attended parties and even sponsored events. Genius! These two businesses are not the only ones who take community seriously. Take for example High Plains Bank and Left Hand Brewery. They may not have had the blowout pre grand-opening marketing blitz, but they sure take their giving back seriously. Left Hand even talks about community in their Core Values statement and has set a goal to donate 1% of annual revenues to charitable organizations. While this is very nice to see on a piece of paper, Left Hand actually delivers: they raised over $680k through several events, participated in the “House that Beer Built” for Habitat for Humanity and much more. Left Hand is a prime example of com-
munity involvement and there are many other unsung heroes that have decided it’s better to give than just take. This is a lot of how you define community. This is what gives Longmont its own unique, cool vibe. It isn’t the uber-cool of Boulder or LoDo, but we have our own thing going and it works. It always works better when more people participate, so go out this summer, find out more about this cool place and if you are in the mood – give back, help someone, take cookies to the new neighbors, and attend a downtown event. When you do some of these things, you’ll know what it feels like to have community in your business plan. You may even run into one of the great businesses and Chamber members who have it in their hearts.
