CCA MESSAGE Craig Scott
As we continue through this Covid world we need to remember to keep moving forward. 2020 may be the year we all want to forget, but 2020 has been a great year for Charolais. We continue to increase our market share in the bull sales as well as a very strong female sales. As I write this update, we are well underway in the fall commercial calf run and most market reports see Char cross calves at the top, weight does matter. The CCA has had a very productive year. In February we had our first intake of replacement heifers for the residual feed intake trials, 51 heifers were tested. Our second intake of heifers just started on October 15th. The CCA board of directors continues to drive our breed forward, a new genomic program was initiated this fall. When you do a 50k SNP test on your walking bull you can get a 50k SNP test on his dam at no cost. The more genetic profiles we collect the more accurate our EPD become. Over the last year the CCA has also be exploring our EPD providers along with doing more frequent runs, at the time of me writing this update no decision has been made but hope it will be very soon. Lois, Haylea and I are always available to answer question and help in anyway we can. We do ask that when we do a mail out or an email blast that you take the time to read them, we do it to keep our membership up to date. There are some very exciting events that planned for the near future so if at all possible, get out and support and network with your fellow breeders. Take Care Craig Scott General Manager, Canadian Charolais Association

JUNIOR REPORT Madisyn Robertson Happy Fall everyone! Summer was pretty quiet with no in person events, however, thanks to the hard work and dedication of many adults and senior members, CCYA and the Manitoba Youth Beef Round-Up held virtual competitions that allowed us to still feel like we were participating. Thank you to everyone who went above and beyond to make these virtual competitions happen. Tanya Airey has kept our Junior Facebook page engaging with various judging activities and links to some interesting webinars. Thank you Tanya! On July 25, ten of us met up at the MCA AGM, hosted by C2 Charolais. Most of us kids and a bunch of parents started the day off zip lining in the beautiful Pembina Valley. This was a blast and so many laughs were had by all. After returning to C2, we participated in some fun and educational judging activities, facilitated by Megan Kemp-Baron and Jackie Cavers. Megan made the activity extra exciting with a water gun during oral reasons. Not only did it help cool us down (the day was really hot) but I know I will remember to not use that terminology again! Jackie, Fischer and Lukas had prize bags prepared for all of us and afterwards we engaged in friendly water fights. Thank you to the Cavers family for an amazing day. Since CCYA in Olds, AB has been pushed back to 2021, we are anticipating an extra year to plan for our next Manitoba hosted conference. We will be calling a fall meeting for various housekeeping duties so please watch your emails. Sincerely, Madisyn Robertson

The Canadian Charolais Youth Association offers a number of programs and incentives throughout the year for juniors to start or grow their own Charolais herd. The genetics program allows Junior Charolais members to receive two free straws of semen from a bull that Genex, Semex or Select Sires offers. Check the CCYA website in February for the application form. The Buy & Show Program provides a monetary rebate to Juniors who purchase their own Charolais or Char-cross animal, with additional money available if the purchased animal is then showed. Up to $125 is available for rebate. The purchase incentive program allows Juniors who purchased a Charolais animal the opportunity to awarded 2 free straws of semen from the CCYA semen inventory list. A bill of sale must be presented and sent to the CCYA youth Coordinator. The CCYA also has two scholarships that are available. First, the Travel Opportunity scholarship provides youth members with a chance to receive funds in order to travel while attending an event involving the Charolais breed or the cattle industry in general. Second, the Leadership Scholarships are presented at the conference and show. Funds are raised through the Semen Auction. These awards recognize senior members on their contribution to the Charolais breed and their leadership among other Charolais youth members. If there are any questions or how to apply for all these great programs visit the CCYA website or contact one of the national board members.

COMMERCIAL BREEDER of the year
Written by Alexis Stockford - Manitoba Co-operator
Commercial Charolais producer Darcy Watson has played with other genetics over the years, but he says those experiments have always led him back to Charolais. The Watson family has a long history with Charolais cattle. It was the breed his father ran, Watson recalled, and the one that he’s has pursued as he has grown his herd over the last 15 years. Today, about 175 Charolais-mix cow-calf pairs roam Watson’s farm, on top of the hayland needed to support the herd and just over 3,000 acres of grain production. About 95 per cent of Watson’s bulls are Charolais, an interest he says is driven by the breed’s growth statistics and general ease of care. “We’ve had them for a long time,” Watson said. “We’ve gone and tried some other breeds of bulls, but we’ve always come back to the Charolais, for the most part.”
“We’ve gone and tried some other breeds of bulls, but we’ve always come back to the Charolais, for the most part.”
That breed loyalty and the quality of animals he sends to market has earned Watson and family a nod as the Manitoba Charolais Association’s 2020 Commercial breeder of the year. The Association draws nominations yearly from Manitoba’s list of purebred Charolais breeders. To be nominated, producers must have bought registered bulls from a Manitoba breeder and must be “doing a good job representing the Charolais cross-bred program

as a whole, to which Darcy seemed to excel quite well,” association board member Mervin Nykoliation said. “His cattle are very well presented. The quality’s right up there and he just does an all-round good job as a commercial Charolais breeder,” Nykoliation said, later noting Watson’s general approachability and discerning eye in the sale ring. “He knows what kind of bull he’s looking for,” Nykoliation said. “He’s an excellent cattleman… I’d say the whole Watson family in general, they know cattle and they know what they’re doing and they’re doing an excellent job.” Deep roots A fourth-generation farmer, Watson cannot recall a time when the farm did not have cattle, although herd sizes have shifted over time.
Like most Manitoba cattle producers, Watson’s farm changed significantly when BSE hit in 2003. Unlike most Manitoban cattle producers however, that change increased Watson’s number of cattle. Watson, whose herd numbers were low coming into the BSE crisis, decided to expand his operation, despite the catastrophic price drops and market backlogs plaguing the sector at the time.
Darcy Watson Rossendale, MB Parker, Val and Darcy Watson accept their award jackets from Ron McDonald of the Manitoba Charolais Association after being named 2020 commercial breeder of the year.
“Myself personally, I ran about 40 cows for a long time,” Watson said. “And then actually, right around the time of BSE or shortly after BSE hit, we actually expanded. We had land that needed to be in hay, hay ground, and we got corn for silage, so we had the feed and we just decided to expand because of some of the cheaper bred cow prices.” Watson’s herd jumped by several orders of magnitude over the next 15 years as the farm rode the recovering market, eventually building up to the 175 cow-calf pairs they post today. Their current herd is likely the largest in the farm’s history, Watson said, noting that his father’s herd typically hit around 100 cows. For the last seven to 10 years, the Watsons have averaged around 170 head. Watson does not foresee any radical shift when it comes to the future of the farm. There may still be some minor expansion in the herd, although the family is generally comfortable with their current numbers. On the other hand, the farm may yet grow their current grain operation. “We might go up to 200 cows or somewhere in there, but basically we’re just looking at keeping things going the way they are until we can pass it on to the next generation,” he said.

HOW DO YOU OVER WINTER YOUR HOW DO YOU OVER WINTER MATURE BULLS? YEARLING (LETTER G) BULLS THAT YOUR We winter bulls basically in our back yard, this way we can keep an YOU PLAN TO HAVE WALKING IN eye on them and make sure they stay out of trouble. The down side is sometimes they wake you up at 3Am on a warm spring night. YOUR HERD NEXT YEAR? The main thing we have added to our winter regiment is a Ritchie When it comes to wintering our yearling bulls they are usually brought in from pasture about the first week of November, at that time they are put on a TMR of alflafa/brome hay, corn silage and mineral. We like to see them hit the ideal breeding condition in March without getting too fat. - Brad Cline, Cline Cattle Company We over winter our yearling bulls that we plan to use in the spring and keep in our herd with the intention of protecting our investment in purchasing them, and making sure that they are able to grow to their full potential and hit their peak mid to end of March to ensure condition, soundness, movability and fertility. They graze on pasture until around mid-end of October. When the grass begins to lose it’s punch we supplement the pasture with hay and a bit of rolled grain until we open up the silage pit. From then to spring they are on a ration of high quality, free choice hay, and TMR of barley silage, rolled grain and mineral. They are in a large pasture/ pen around 3 acres in size with lots of room for exercise (aka playing and fighting and hopefully not breaking too many things or themselves). In this pasture/pen there is a large enclosed windbreak section that we keep heavily bedded. We ensure that the pack is very large so that there is no chance that any bull will sleep on the snow or ice which could affect his semen test. On the really cold/windy nights in the winter we’ll lock the bulls in this section. We have found that this has worked well for us for protecting our investment, developing our yearling bulls and ensuring that they stay in our herd. - High Bluff Stock Farm

water fountain this way they have clean fresh water when ever they want. Water is essential for all animals and we find they just winter so much better with fresh water instead of licking snow or only getting water once or twice a day when you have time to fill their water tub or break the dugout. For feed it’s typically dry hay/wild hay, or occasionally millet silage bales and straw. Also we hand feed a few pails of barley chop every time we put new hay bales or bedding in their pen. Mostly this is more of a treat for them and a easy way to ensure they get their minerals that we mix in. By March depending on the bulls conditioning we change up their feed, we try to have the bulls look good going into breeding season. Typically we give barley chop every day or every second day. It doesn’t amount to much but it sure helps give them a boost and the extra minerals help increase overall health and semen results come testing time. We want our bulls to last as long as they can. When you spend money on bulls why wouldn’t you want them to last as long as possible. Good management is key to that. They don’t need to be fat but we like to make sure they have water. Also winter them in a large pasture to give lots of space so they hopefully don’t hurt themselves or another bull when fighting. -Jared Preston, Double P Stock Farms We over winter our yearling/2 year old bulls in a small pasture close to the yard. We feed a mixed ration of hay and silage. - Ben & Ellen, Jill and Clare Martens, Martens Charolais & Seed Plenty of straw and out of the wind. Our most expensive investment is a herd bull not providing adequate bedding to protect your investment is a bad plan. Deworm and delouse with Ivomec. C2 Charolais La Rivière, MB Jeff, Jackie, Keegan, Fischer & Lukas Cavers
During the Annual General Meeting on July 25, the Manitoba Charolais Association voted on and selected C2 Charolais – Jeff & Jackie Cavers and family - as the Charolais Ambassador of the Year. One could joke that C2 Charolais is home of the “presidents” as Jeff second term president of the Manitoba Charolais Association, having been an active board member for many years prior. Their son, Keegan Blehm is in his second term as president of the Canadian Charolais Youth Association. Jackie is the Adult Advisor for the Manitoba Junior Charolais Association. Jackie is also a board member and very involved with the Manitoba Youth Beef Round-Up, a multi-breed youth show held in Neepawa each summer, to which the children participate. Jeff has been a member of the Canadian Charolais Association since 2002, when he registered his first calves, after leasing 12 cows from his uncle and aunt Lloyd and Lorraine Cavers.

PUREBRED AMBASSADOR of the year Written by Bert McDonald & Judy Hart
Jeff, Jackie and Keegan were extremely invested with the organization and success of the 2018 Canadian Charolais Youth Association Conference held in Brandon. Keegan, Fischer and Lukas have all been and continue to be CCYA participants. The Cavers family are extremely involved with youth in their community – Jeff not only coaches hockey but is also a 4-H Leader in their local club. This past summer Jackie and Fischer participated in the Great Cycle Challenge Canada, biking over 400 km in 31 days raising $2801.21 to benefit kids with cancer. After renting out their grain land this past spring, Jeff and Jackie have put all their efforts into their cowherd. Keegan has returned home to the farm and is increasing his own cowherd numbers. Jeff has ventured into a new position with Xports International Inc. as a beef specialist. C2 Charolais hosted their First Annual Bull Sale in 2018 and will host the 3rd Annual Sale on April 1, 2021 at Killarney Auction Market. As hosts of the 2020 MCA AGM, the Cavers family set the bar high! The day started off with golf and zip lining, followed by the AGM. The Junior members were kept entertained with judging activities and team building exercises followed by prizes for all. The evening was topped off with a great meal, lots of laughs and camaraderie. Jeff, Jackie, Keegan, Fischer and Lukas are extremely passionate about the Charolais breed, their cattle and their farm. They wholeheartedly give 110% to everything they are involved in and treat everyone they meet like old friends. The Manitoba Charolais Association definitely chose a very deserving family. Congratulations!

A picture may say a thousand words but in the cattle business it may be a matter of a thousand dollars. A good picture, a picture that shows the best qualities of your animal is key when marketing them. Here are a few tips and tricks to help make your picture day run smooth, whether you are picturing yourself or hiring a professional.

THE IDEAL STANCE
CATTLE PHOTOGRAPHY

be afraid to give that animal a break, move on to the next one and give the uncooperative animal time to chill. Pen Setup can make or break a picture day. Have a pen that the cattle are used to that is clean, dry, secure and somewhat level. A pen that has the subject animal on the north side of the photographer, with a clear uncluttered background or a solid backgound, ie: windbreak, bales etc. Even firm ground helps with proper feet placement, the less hills and holes the more natural the animals is liable to stand. Having other cattle around is very important. This could be a panelled area or even as simple as having another animal tied up at the end of the pen. Hot wire pens are a great set up for picture pens, but only if your cattle are used to it.
The success of picture day starts long before your photographer shows up. Walk through your cattle have them used to people, not in the side by side, The following image illustrates an ideal pen layout with rough dimensions. not in the tractor actually walk, it makes a huge difference! If you are the one helping in will recieve the final product. Making a plan with the pen, stay calm and try to stay patient, animals sense anxiety and if you are worked up chances your photographer takes a little stress off everyone in are the animal is going to work its self up. Don’t be shy, don’t be afraid to make weird noises or sale preparation. move around to get the animals attention. If you are marketing show heifers your picture day Video Day, much the same as picture day. Ideally the pen is similar to picture day set up but for prep may be a little different than if you are selling sure have cattle at both ends of the pen. Video day is when larger pens work better as it allows the herdbulls to commercial producers. How ever you animal space to walk out. On the side that the cattle are walking on it is ideal not have to have any decided to prep your animals have them ready for corners that the cattle can get in to and spin around. All Embryo and Full French animals must be parent verified as well in order to be registered. The turnaround time for results is 4 to 6 weeks from the time the sample arrives at the lab. Remember the mail takes about a week to get to the lab, unless you send your samples express post. When the results are returned to the Canadian Charolais Association they are email to you from our program email or mailed if you do not have an email. When bringing semen up from the USA check and make sure that the bull is parent verified in the American Charolais Association, as their DNA requirements are different than the Canadian Charolais Association. In loving memory of MICHEAL E. “MIKE” GEDDES March 26th, 1954 - July 29, 2020 Michael E. “Mike” Geddes passed away July 29th, 2020 at the Rock Lake Personal Care Home, Pilot Mound, MB at the age of 66. Mike took over the Char-O-Clare herd from his pioneer Charolais breeder father, Clare Geddes, in the 80s and continued raising Charolais for the next 20 years. Exhibiting cattle at major shows across Western Canada and competed successfully at the Douglas and Gunton Bull Test Stations. While the farm carried his Dad’s name it was Mike’s hard work, sweat and tears that created the demand from commercial cattlemen across Western Canada for herd sires from Char-O-Clare Stock Farm. Mike was known and respected far and wide in the cattle industry for his knowledge, friendliness and willingness to celebrate from time to time. Selling bulls and the relationships he made were some of the best times of his life. In 1977 he married Alvina (Al) the love of his life and carried on working the family farm. Ernie and Al enjoyed entertaining at their cabin where many family and friends would gather for bar-b-ques. In loving memory of WAYNE P. MILLIKEN November 23, 1939 - February 10, 2020 Wayne Milliken, Killarney, MB passed away February 10th at the age of 80. Wayne is survived by his wife Lee, son Donald (Jo-Ann), daughter Vickie and grandchildren Dillon, Cody & Madison. Wayne and Lee started WPM Charolais at Holmfield in 1973 and were both very active in the Charolais industry with Wayne being an MCA director as well sitting on the Douglas Test Station board for many years. Lee was always around to give a helping hand with the Charolettes as well. They were presented with the Manitoba Pioneer Award at the Heart of Canada show in 1996. They had dispersed in 1989 at which time their son Don & his wife Jo-Ann built up their Char-Don Charolais herd. Their grandsons Dillon & Cody now have a Charolais herd under the name of Prairie Trail Charolais. In loving memory of ERNEST “ERNIE” HENRY ESAU August 3, 1933- October 26, 2020 Ernie Esau formerly of Ernmore Polled Charolais, Elm Creek, MB passed away October 26th at the age of 87. Ernie was a true leader in Canadian agriculture and passionate especially about beef and Charolais cattle. Ernie was a keen to learn and teach others in the industry. He knew that in order to be a successful breeder you had to match cattle pedigrees to produce a product that the commercial cattleman wanted to buy. That a breed could only be successful if you could sell bulls to the commercial cattlemen and to raise cattle that were efficient at all levels of the industry. Ernie always took time to tour through all breeds of cattle. His reasoning was – good cattle are good cattle – and you can learn so much about the direction the cattle industry is going by touring through all the barns and talking to the breeders. Ernie traveled across Canada and the US to many shows and sales including Denver, the Toronto Royal Winter Fair and the Canadian Western Exhibition. He had a trophy and ribbon room that showed that he was very successful at what he did. He sold his award winning genetics in Canada and around the world to improve the Charolais breed. While Ernie was an influential cattle breeder and enthusiast, Ernie and his wife Irma were most proud of their family consisting of 6 children and 21 grand children and 21 great grand children. Ernie enjoyed being outside, hunting, fishing, exotic birds and especially visiting. Ernie was inducted into the Manitoba Agriculture Hall of Fame in 2019.
