What a fall it has been! The weather has been great, allowing us a later grazing season and more time to get fall work done.
What an exciting time for the cattle industry!!
Auction marts are in full swing, as the fall run of calves are rolling in off pastures. Record breaking prices are being set and rising weekly with no sign of a slow down in sight. This is great news for producers to help counter balance the high cost of production now a days.
Once again the char cross calves are in high demand for the feedlots. There is no better time to add some Charolais influence to your herd to improve your bottom line. The char cross just plain works, no matter the colour of cows you have.
Winter is right around the corner and bull shopping season is not far off as well.
Manitoba has some of the best seed stock producers in the business and they would gladly answer any questions or assist you with your next herdsire purchase.

CONGRATULATIONS
SCOTT, MEGAN, PAISLEY & THOMAS!
It’s with great pleasure that we announce that Scott and Megan Baron of Hidden Lake Stock Farms have been selected as the 2024 Ambassador Award from the Manitoba Charolais Association. This prestigious award recognizes the outstanding contributions and dedication of Hidden Lake Stock farms to the Charolais breed and agricultural community.
Scott and Megan, along with their kids Paisley and Thomas own and operate Hidden Lake Stock Farms at Carberry, Manitoba. They run about 40 purebred Charolais alongside Scott’s Parents Tom and Lynne Baron who run about 150 head of mainly red and black angus, commercial cattle. Scott continues to work off farm full-time managing a local potato farm, while Megan works in the Agriculture Seed Industry full time.
Scott has been involved with showing Charolais since the early 2000’s after attending the World Charolais Congress in 2006 where he worked for HEJ Charolais of Innisfail Alta. He worked for many years with Bert and Judy McDonald and the JMB Crew. When they dispersed in 2011, Scott, Paul and Bryce started the Fun Bus Syndicate and bought a Charolais heifer calf JMB Ms Dateline114Y. They spent many years showing offspring off that cow, and still have a descendant of that cow in their herd today.
Megan grew up on a mixed farming operation and was brought up with Angus cattle. She was involved with the Junior Angus program growing up and later attended Lakeland Collage where she was part of the Judging team as well as competed at several major competitions. She spent many years helping show cattle for various farming operations across western Canada.
Shortly after Paisley was born in 2016, Hidden Lake Stock Farm was formed. Paisley was the lucky recipient of the CCYA donation heifer, Steppler Miss CCYA 2018 41E, since named ‘My Moo” from Stepper Farms. At the 2017 Charolais National Show held at Manitoba Ag Ex. The following year Scott and Megan purchased their first registered Charolais cows from Jeff and Jackie Cavers of C2 Charolais. Over the years Scott and Megan have continued to purchase cows from C2 Charolais, JMB Charolais, DRD Charolais, Steppler Farms, Sunshine Oak Charolais, and few other operations building up their herd. While they continue to show, under the Hidden Lake Stock Farms banner, they have been successfully campaigning their top genetics at various summer shows, Ag Ex and Agribition. Since Paisley turned 6 in 2022, they have been attending Junior Shows including CCYA and Round Up. Paisley has been very successful in showing many offspring off her “My Moo” cow.
Because of their deep history and passion for showing, Scott and Megan have been giving back and helping to mentor the next generation of cattle men and women about the beef industry and the show ring. They participate on numerous boards and committees geared towards the youth including, Manitoba Youth Beef Round Up, Manitoba Charolais Association, Carberry Ag Society, and the Carberry 4-H Beef Club.
In 2022 Scott and Megan joined the Prairie Distinction Bull sale keeping the top 4 bulls every year to offer for sale. They also sell a select junior prospect show heifer every year at various consignment sales. Their breeding program continues to build cattle that work for the commercial producers.
Last year was a turning point for Hidden Lake Stock farms, as they began an embryo transfer program with the support of both their parents and their commercial herds. They worked to source embryos from some of the breeds most elite females. As well as flushing a female going back to the first ‘My Moo’ cow.
Scott and Megan would like to thank Bert McDonald for the nomination and are honored to be selected by their peers for the Manitoba Charolais Association 2024 Ambassador Award. Recognizing them for their invaluable contributions to the Manitoba Charolais Association and agricultural industry.

I am attending the University of Saskatchewan, where I am enrolled in the first year of an Agricultural Sciences degree. I farm with my parents and grandparents on our mixed grain and cattle farm. I am president of the Manitoba Junior Charolais Association and sit on the Canadian Charolais Youth Association Board as secretary and Manitoba director. I have been involved in the Charolais breed my entire life, and I am currently growing my purebred herd in addition to my commercial herd. I was very involved with the Neepawa & Area 4-H Beef Club and have attended many youth cattle events such as CCYA, Manitoba Youth Beef Roundup, Showdown, Bonanza and Royal Manitoba Winter Fair, along with Manitoba Ag-Ex and Canadian Western Agribition. I am on the University of Saskatchewan judging
team and enjoying the camaraderie and opportunity to learn and advance my skills.
I attended Nationals with the Westman Magic AAA U19 softball team this past summer and was a member of the 2024 Team Manitoba Senior Women’s Hardball team. I enjoy curling and have joined the University of Saskatchewan Recreation League. I enjoy working on the farm, baking, and working on show cattle in my downtime.
I appreciate the Manitoba Charolais Association’s selection of me as the 2024 scholarship recipient. The funds will assist with my post-secondary education.
This fall Madisyn was also awarded a five hundred scholarship presented to a student attending college or university who is active in agriculture. Presented by the Manitoba Farm Women’s Conference.

The 17th Annual Manitoba Youth Beef Round-Up was held August 2- 4, 2024, at Stride Exhibition Place in Neepawa, Manitoba. This may be the Best Manitoba Youth Beef Roundup ever held with a record number of enthusiastic Junior Cattle Producers and largest number of Cattle to date.
Over 100 youth and 122 head of cattle gathered for an educational and fun weekend. This event draws youth aged 6 – 25 from Ontario, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. The success of this event is attributed to not only the teamwork of the committee members but also the hands-on assistance of parent volunteers, jumping in whenever and wherever necessary. Our judges for the weekend were Justin Harcourt, Quill Lake, SK and Mason Beck, Lang, SK.
Friday events kicked off with the ever-popular Ag Challenge. Members are grouped into teams of all ages and sent on a scavenger hunt for various items. Educational workshops included learning how to wash and care for the animal’s hair and grooming, herd health with Dr. Liz Ostendorf (Neepawa Vet Clinic), making a herd health plan, record keeping, and verifying the beef program, health and medicine, mock interviews, branding yourself, filling out applications, and essential HR guides. Juniors finished off the hot day with the popular slip-and-slide.
Saturday began bright and early with judging workshops facilitated by Justin and Mason. Senior members were then required to judge heifers, steers, sheep, hay, and a scenario class, filling out a judging card for each and providing oral reasons for the cattle, sheep, and scenario classes. Intermediates provided oral reasons for the heifer & sheep class and written reasons for the others. Juniors provided written reasons for all and oral reasons for the heifer class. Pee-wee members and new juniors were involved in a unique Cattle Camp where they learned how to judge in a more appropriate setting, as well as making & tying rope halters. After lunch, Cattle Camp members worked on grooming and showmanship while everyone else participated in team grooming, team judging, and sales talks.
The evening concluded with group members competing in the cook-off, where each group was provided with a steak and was required to prepare a meal for two discerning judges’ evaluation. Our judges were treated to feasts worthy of kings & queens! Steak Judges were: Cam and Tracy Wood, Albert Rimke, Phil Reimer (Bullseye), Devin Boitson (Boehringer),and Wade Beck.
Sunday is show day. It begins with showmanship and is followed by the conformation show, a parade of 4-H Champions, and the Supreme Show. The weekend concludes with awards and supper. A large crowd attended the weekend events.
