SEPTEMBER 16th2023
View the cattle and bid online OR view cattle in person and bid online. In these modern times, we wanted to provide options for commercial and seedstock breeders from across the globe.
If you can make it in person, you’re ALL invited to the farm in Elora, Ontario, Canada. Good stock and hospitality will be plentiful as you have the opportunity to see our foundation cow herd and herd bulls on pasture.
This year marks our 10th year breeding Speckle Park cattle after being in the cattle business for over 40 years. We made the transition to Speckle Park in 2012 and have never looked back; in fact we are just getting started. As a customer of Underhill SPECS, you will have our long-term support not only 100% standing behind our stock but also with some unique programs like the show sponsor program on sale females this year.
No females are being held back for National Shows or Sales in 2023. We want to see our best succeed through our customer base as there is simply nothing more rewarding. Sale females all come from top proven cows in the breed that never miss, no matter the sire mating. We have found that this is the only current consistent “data” to follow in this still developing Speckle Park breed.
Our 18th sale is only possible with satisfied customers returning and positive word-of-mouth drawing new customers. Current breeders and new breeders are all welcome sale day.
In advance, we want to thank all viewers, bidders and buyers for supporting the sale in whatever way you can. It all helps and is very much appreciated.
Any questions on the cattle or our program please just ask. THANK YOU/MERCI

There comes a time when you need to support customers rather than compete against them. Success through customers is the most fulfilling feeling when building an innovative seedstock program. This year we will offer breeders/buyers a $400 sponsorship on any 2022 or 2023 sale female shown at the 2023 Royal Winter Fair and/or 2023 Canadian Western Agribition, sharing a maximum sponsorship of $800/head. Most of these females have been tied and are well on their way to being broke for show. We are offering the best females we have to our customers and therefore we will not be showing at these two events. We think highly of the sale offer and highly of our customers – thank you in advance for your support!
TO $800/HEAD
We purchased US Monterey 6K last fall, who was the high selling heifer calf. We appreciate her for her volume and mass. Even after the trek to Central Alberta she came off looking broody and full. We are looking forward to her calving, her udder is developing very nicely. This Splash of Black daughter compliments the KFC breeding program and fits in perfectly.
We were very excited to see a black Night Raid heifer on offer in the catalog – US Black Velvet 7K. Seeing the performance in the picture and videos Jordon sent us, really impressed us at RH. When we got her home we knew it was going to work well. She fit into our program beautifully and is still looking the part even through the drought this year.
The breeding program at Underhill SPECS continues to captivate our attention. US Rich Strike 1K, the Big Block daughter we purchased in 2022 continues to impress ourselves and visitors with her body mass and structure. From her nose to her hoof smoothness of bone, depth and capacity, wide from front to rear, yet feminine. Rich Strike’s success in the show ring has us very excited to see what US SPECS has to offer this September!

Four-year old powerplant cow, with a rock star udder and heavy horse feet. These are the kind of cows we search the Country for to set a standard for our breeding program here at US. If we didn’t need a star to lead off this sale, 61H would never leave the property. 61H sells with her growthy Blue Chip daughter that one day will join her in the donor pen no doubt. 61H has never been flushed.

25G was selected as the high selling heifer in the Sunrise Ranch dispersal sale, because we felt her solid black dam 54A was the best cow in the herd. In 2023, 25G decided to put down an extra pay cheque with two All Out sired bull calves unassisted. Lots of option here for the buyer with this 4-PAC. 25G has never been flushed.

This gal was an easy pick from the 1st time we laid eyes on her. She’s bold and proud and extremely easy keeping. We like the genetic variants because we’ve found that often they make the hardiest pasture production cows. Katniss 28K will calve early January 2024, so by early March she can head to the local Boviteq flush station. Seller will transport her to and from at their expense and the conventional flush OR IVF flush is at the buyers expense (direct billing from station). Seller guarantees a minimum of 4 grade 1 embryos. Seller will provide semen out of their inventory at no additional cost, if the buyer so chooses (wide selection of semen in-stock sexed and conventional).

Jordon
Underhill of Guelph, Ontario, got a call in the winter of 2011 from a local feedlot operator asking Jordon if he could take on a heifer that unexpectedly calved in the feedyard. Jordon obliged, not knowing the impact that heifer would have on his operations going forward.
Jordon eventually put that heifer amongst his own cows in a yard with feedbunks which were visible to him 24-7 by camera surveillance. What he noticed was how little this new mother went up to the bunk relative to her herdmates of more conventional beef breeds. And yet she kept her condition through the winter months and later on grass. It impressed and intrigued Underhill enough to look into the breed.
Underhill SPECS was founded by Jordon and his family in 2012 and grew to its current size of 60 foundation Speckle Park females. This operation was the first in Eastern Canada to win a championship banner at Agribition and the first to host an Eastern Speckle Park Breed production sale. Underhill has since hosted 20 breed production sales, both for themselves and as a marketing outlet for other Eastern breeders. Their program keenly focusses on maternal, wide-pinned females with above-average milk production.
Underhill, who owns an agricultural management company that owns and operates the Canadian Dairy XPO, has a sharp business sense and expects optimum efficiency from his beef herd of Speckle Parks. Milking ability, he says, converts to protein. And Speckle Park cows not only have that ability, he says, but they excel in production into their senior years, demonstrating exceptional longevity. A full 40 per cent of Jordon’s herd are eight years of age and older.
“My cows’ output is maximized at eight to 13 years of age,” he says, believing Speckle Park cows to have about a five-year lactation advantage over most conventional beef breeds. He calls it his “business case” for the breed and has run the numbers to illustrate that extra five-year advantage.
The Economics of five extra lactations, assuming at least a $2,000 annual calf value, is illustrated below. It’s the kind of math that Jordon believes will both attract new breeders to the breed and keep the ones in it sustainable for generations.
“It’s the Speckle Park breed’s biggest selling feature,” he says. And the economics are the same across multiple regions of the country and around the globe, in different management scenarios, he says, whether it’s minus 40 in Saskatchewan winters, plus 10 and damp in Ontario, or 100+ degrees Fahrenheit in Brazil or Australia. Their dark hide and pigmented teats and testicles play a big factor in that resilience, he says.
The Speckle Park cow, he strongly believes, is a “breed for the future” because of their resilience across environments and their longevity in the herd.
Speaking to current economics, Jordon believes full-time farmers and ranchers need economics of scale to survive, while those with other business operations or jobs must cap their cowherds at fewer cows. Either way, he says, the reality is less time per cow. The Speckle Park cow, he strongly believes, is a “breed for the future” because of their resilience across environments and their longevity in the herd. A productive but older Speckle Park cow is justifiably more valuable herself, at selling, than most cows, Jordon believes, due to that longevity. And the number one reason for that longevity, in his opinion, is “lifetime production lactations.” He says that some of his best calves are produced by cows that are past their 10th lactation.
Semex’s first Speckle Park bull on offer was purchased from Underhill Specs and that bull’s semen is still selling worldwide. Whereas a Canadian dairy producer would normally sell a week-old calf for $100, their Speckle Park-cross calves bring them closer to $400, according to Jordon, which justifies higher semen prices, particularly for sexed semen (i.e. $20 - $25/straw vs. $8 - $10/straw conventionally).
Jordon has pushed birthweights on his females from a window of 65 – 75 lbs up to 80-95 lbs without sacrificing calving ease, partly by strict culling of replacement females and bulls. The calves have exceptional vigour, he finds. And this is not sacrificed in any of the beef or dairy breeds they are crossed with.
Jordon’s close work with the dairy industry in Canada has made him a big believer in supply management for the long-term sustainability of families on-farm. He equates the philosophy of supply management to the Speckle Park breed’s closed herd book.
“We all know what happens to price when we over supply a market and it’s up to us as breeders to set the highest quality standards that are appropriate in this developing infant breed,” he says.
“They just keep pulling, despite age,” he says. “And the number one reason for that longevity is structural balance and udder conformation and quality.
Aside from production sales, Underhill SPECS also markets frozen genetics online into international markets and more recently, Jordon’s connections inside the dairy industry have led to selling substantial semen into the dairy market.
Investment in the breed has been rewarding one for him, having experienced other conventional breeds in a commercial cow-calf set up. Because the Canadian commercial meat grading system doesn’t reward producers financially for meat quality, the next best thing, according to Jordon, is cows with longevity that can efficiently produce pounds of meat protein well past 10 lactations. He believes this to be the best path to “profitability for all” in the chain from farm/ranch to plate.
