I will never forget the early spring day in 2019 when I called Darren Barbour, manager of Sanders Ranch. I was in the feed truck in between pastures. I asked Darren if he and Steve Sanders, ranch owner, would entertain the idea of having a Hereford Sale at their beautiful facility. His answer after conferring with Steve was yes, and so be it we are on sale #5!

Many thanks to Steve and Darren as without these guys and their facility as well as location we could not bring these top cut females to the Kansas City during the American Royal Hereford weekend.

This year’s sale offering will once again be our very best heifer calves, plus a deep cut into the bred heifers and frozen embryos of the highest caliber and semen on our Herdbull line up, PLUS the PICK of fall born 2023 heifer calves.

Fifty years ago, my wife Sheila’s family had Champion Polled Hereford Female at the Kansas State Fair with a Citation daughter they had raised on their farm in Manitoba, Canada, she was shown by Alfalfa Lawn Farms. This was ten years before we met. But Sheila’s family plus Alfalfa Lawn Farms Family and Jim and Sue Rowland and countless others instilled in me the want to raise the best Herefords we could propagate!

Are we performance breeders or are we show people, we’re both! We sell over 100 bulls each spring, we feed our steers at HRC Feed Yard through the AHA, we’ve sent a number of young sires through the Young Sire Test. The same cows that provided us with the Chosen females also mother our bulls! Keep them sound, keep them fertile, use the tools available and you can easily have cattle you can show plus sell commercially!

This is a family operation and we are proud to have our oldest son, Brady and wife Allie and girls back at the ranch to help when they can. Our daughter Brooke and husband Kalen live close also and their son Keaton is always up for ranch life. Ben lives in Manhattan and works at KSU and we are glad to have him close also to be involved with the cattle as our kids all were raised in the junior program which we continue to support. The HYFA is a beneficial program for all Hereford youth enthusiasm from showing to leadership to the shoot-out program.

What a way to introduce a new cow family at the ranch. We purchased a flush on the 9143 female from Perez Cattle Co, NM. We were blessed with a large number of eggs from this flush, which gave us the chance to sell a portion of the calves in the Chosen Sale.
