AUN - USR &S

A COMPANION GUIDE

The Workshop on University's Social Responsibility and Sustainability from ASEAN-Japan Perspectives: Sharing and Caring for a Better Community BACKGROUND The basic idea of AUN University Social Responsibility and Sustainability (USR&S) involves the solid commitment of conducts for the betterment of the living society practised by the very components of the higher education i.e. university students and the faculty staf¬fs. With personal commitment to USR&S practised by the university, the higher education could forge the personal perception and characteristics of the individuals that in turns, could promote social goods in the long run. "The Workshop on University's Social Responsibility and Sustainability from ASEAN-Japan Perspectives: Sharing and Caring for a Better Community" is initiated and organised by the AUN Secretariat. Your kind contribution to the workshop will serve the purpose of providing access to the exclusive collection of good practices, initiatives and innovations of USR&S within the Member Universities. You will engage in the exchanges of, and to learn the good practices from each others.

ABOUT AUN-USR&S Higher Education’s Mission Community involvement The FOUR Integral Parts

of university’s social responsibility & sustainability

Campus life

University Governance & Administration

The AUN USR&S Conceptual Framework could be categorised into 4 integral areas which are: (1) Teaching and Learning, Research and Academic Services (University’s common missions), (2) University’s Governance and Administration, (3) Community Involvement, and (4) Campus Life

WORKSHOP APPROACES We acquire USR&S good practices by the systematic approaches specially designed to harvest and store your success stories. You will get through the sequential, step-by-step approach of the workshop as follows:

Step 1

By joining this workshop, you are effectively a member of a Community of Practice. The Community of practice (CoP) is a network of people who share a common interest in a specific area of knowledge or competence and are willing to work and learn together over a period of time to develop and share that knowledge. The membership of CoP is formed and last (continue or disband) on a voluntary basis. So you will be the first who contribute to the creation and development of USR&S CoP among AUN Member Universities.

We are the group of practitioners who possess tacit knowledge. As our group is formed on the semi-voluntary basis, the AUN Secretariat will assist the continuation and contribution of this CoP after the workshop has finished.

Step 2

In this workshop, some knowledge management techniques will be deployed to identify good practices, with storytelling methodology as the main approach. Storytelling will make you feel engaged and you can actively involved in the conversation. By using authentic words (or everyday words) putting in a narrative form for the storytelling, you may find your already interesting dialogue enriched with relaxing, memorable and entertaining sense. During this step of engaging process, you will be asked to take turn and tell your successful story; then the AUN Sectrtariat will facilitate and provide assistance in the extraction and arrangement of your good practices.

Step 3

As the contributions to this workshop will be rich in contents and valuable in practices, we are also concern with the sustainability of the AUN-USR&S. An online virtual knowledge centre is being developed on the AUN website to help sustain the tangible outputs of our workshop, the USR&S good practice, and it will also be complemented with the directories of USR&S practitioners within AUN Member Universities. You may communicate with other members of this CoP through this online virtual knowledge centre. This would keep our Community alive and help foster the continued sharing of knowledge among the members.

HOW TO PREPARE YOURSELF FOR THE WORKSHOP? Before the workshop

The participant has to prepare a one-page long successful story on USR&S to be presented at the workshop. Please send your successful story to the AUN Secretariat before 15 September 2010 by email at pornpen@aunsec.org. The additional materials such as photos, videos, and etc. that would facilitate your story are highly recommended (please submit together with your one-page long successful story). You are also welcomed to bring your university's brochures, and/or other means of university's promotion that related to the USR activities, to be displayed at the provided exhibition area of the workshop.

At the workshop

The storytelling technique will aid you to answer the question "what is your university's commitment beyond the conventional organisation strategy that aims for the social goods in a long run?" in the scope of the four integral areas mentioned earlier through the storytelling methodological approach.

After the workshop

AUN will develop and provide you with the online knowledge centre on the AUN website to store the USR&S good practices. In addition, the directories of your CoP will be displayed to give easy access to your contact information.
