HOUSE ANALYSIS Objective
To analyze your residential space on the basis of the following Zoning Space Usage Movement Form and Space Symmetry and Proportion Proximity Clearance Emphasis
Process
Start with observing spaces of the house, how they are used by all the family members and their relationship with each other. Noticing how the space is being used in response to its design and vice versa
N
ZONING
Zoning in the house follows a pattern, as we keep moving further in the house the spaces become private
PRIVATE SEMI PRIVATE SEMI PUBLIC PUBLIC
BATHROOM
BEDROOM
BUBBLE DIAGRAM The drawing room is just at the entrance so most of the guests are entertained there, making it a public space. The balcony in front of the drawing room and the bathroom are semi public spaces as only some of the guests are allowed in this area

BEDROOM
DINING ROOM
BALCONY
BALCONY
KITCHEN
The dining space, kitchen and balconies are used by all the family members at some point or the other ,hence it is a semi private space
All the bedrooms are private along with one bathroom as they are mostly used as per allocation
BALCONY BATHROOM
DRAWING ROOM
SPACE USAGE
The space used the most is my parents and grandmother’s room, as my mom and grandmother stay at home most of the time.
My room, kitchen and one bathroom is used quite a lot as after college I spend most the time in my room. The bathroom is used quite frequently. 80% 60% 50% 40% 20% 10%
BATHROOM
BEDROOM
BUBBLE DIAGRAM
BEDROOM
My bathroom is used less as compared to the other bathroom as it is in one corner and attached to my room The balcony in front of the kitchen is used as a service balcony. The dining area is used to have all the meals and occasionally to chat too.
DINING ROOM
BEDROOM
The balcony in front of the drawing room is used frequently during winters as everyone likes to sit under the sun. The balcony in front of the dining room is rarely used as there’s hardly any sunshine there and no proper sitting area The drawing room is the least used area as it is only used when guests come over
BALCONY
DRAWING ROOM

KITCHEN BATHROOM
MOVEMENT There is movement in the entire house as all the parts of the house are used Movement in the dining area is more as it is central and acts like a junction
FORM AND SPACE
Positive and Negative To check the balance , clearances and proportion
SYMMETRY
Most of the spaces in the house are asymmetric

CLEARANCE OPENINGS In the dining area there is a major clearance issue. It is difficult to open the crockery cabinet which is just behind the dining table In the kitchen , opening the corner cabinets at the same time is not possible as they cross paths and also accessing items kept at the corner is difficult
In the bedroom one door of the cupboard doesn’t open completely
MOVEMENT In the drawing room , the area behind the sofa in front of the window is narrow and its not comfortable to move in that space In the dining area, the space between the dining table chairs and cabinet is not enough to walk comfortably between them
In the kitchen and balcony area When the door of the bedroom(connected to the balcony) is wide open, moving in and out of the kitchen through the kitchen door becomes impossible. The bedroom door needs to be shut first and only then the movement is possible
PROPORTION Proportion Areas marked in blue : The table and cupboard are congesting the small area Areas marked in orange: The bed is quite long as compared to the width of the room it is placed in
FINISHES OF SURFACES
EMPHASIS
The dining area is the space of emphasis in the house. All the spaces are connected to this space and it’s central to the house.
NATURAL LIGHT
There is ample natural light in the house, which makes it well lit during the day and early evening

ZONING
Private
Public
There is a demarcation between public vs. private spaces. The ground floor has mostly public spaces such as living, dining, den, study, kitchen, utilities as well as a guest room and the upper floor has 3 private bedrooms and a family room.
SUN PATH DIAGRAM Since the architects had to protect the existing bamboo grove (situated on the North ) they have built a garden surrounding it. Multiple openings on the North faรงade works for the space perfectly and balance out the amount of sunlight entering through the sliding doors and windows N
N
CIRCULATION Building approach with elevation Configuration Pass by spaces Works efficiently as one is not intruding into a space for the purpose of getting to another space in the house, helps maintain privacy Terminate in a space Spatial Organization Linear
Clearance Ample space for movement
FORM AND SPACE Positive and Negative Spaces
FORM Linear Form Defines exterior space Transformation of space Cuboid-subtractive volumes Cuboidal compositions Subtraction of forms satisfies functional needs-penetration , continuity and circulation
Base plane elevated creating field of space within a spatial context Helps in defining boundaries Visual and spatial continuity is maintained Vertical columns Parallel and U-shaped planes
The subtraction of a cuboidal volume from a bigger one to create this transition space makes the spatial experience pleasant Linear members spanning horizontally provide definition and enclosure to the area.
ORGANIZATION Spaces Interlocking of spaces
The vertical columns break the continuity of the view experienced from the interiors through sliding glass doors. Clean defined lines, play of lines(vertical and horizontal) Volume is subtracted to create the entrance with a few steps along the way ,which looks well defined As you enter, the horizontal lines on the external wall guide you towards the space leading to the door Entry is recessed
LIGHT Openings at the corners and plane creates a physical barrier yet lets the outside come alive into the inside space West of the foyer is a generous sky- lit double height volume gently bathed with natural light via two narrow skylights
CORNERS Determines volumes, allows interior spaces to look outward Reveals surfaces as planes
ELEMENTS Planar elements Openings between planes and corners provide a great view of the existing bamboo grove and other trees along with a garden Repetition -2 slant roofs
MATERIAL The staircase was crafted out of mild steel and timber and floats lightly within its surrounding volume. The wall behind the staircase is crafted from concrete Metal Wood Glass
Spiral staircase- resembles the trees on the boundaries in the plan-enhances symmetry and balance
Temple tree set afloat a linear blue water body at the center enhances visual experience
Long corridors
Use of pastel coloured wall to highlight the form
PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN Axis Linear as well as radial
Symmetry Balanced asymmetrically

Existing problems and proposed solutions Formal living Area/Drawing room
Grandmother’s room
Problem-There is no sense of privacy for those who enter the house from the guests who are sitting there already. The sofa kept in front of the window is blocks circulation
Problem-Since there is no attached bathroom she has to walk up a little and that’s not comfortable during the night especially. The room has a sitting space but it is not very interactive
Existing-The formal drawing room is just at the entrance . The guests are able to see everyone who enters the house and walks by.
Solution-To create a sense of privacy at the entrance. Make the sofa arrangement comfortable and more interactive
Dining room
Existing-The dining room is connected to all the spaces. So whenever guests are sitting there they can easily look into the rooms if the doors aren’t shut. Problem-Privacy of the members sitting in the room is disturbed. Solution-Connect the dining area to all the spaces without disturbing the privacy of those occupying the room.
Family Lounge
Existing- Currently there is no family lounge in the house. The dining area is used to sit together and chat. Problem-The space isn’t comfortable for sitting and chatting as it’s not private and not personalized.
Existing- Large room. Less storage space and no attached bathroom.
Solution-Attached bathroom and have a dedicated sitting area.
Kitchen
Existing- U-shaped kitchen. Refrigerator is not kept in the kitchen. Less storage space Problem-The kitchen isn’t spacious. There is a requirement of more cabinets and sitting space. Solution-Larger kitchen area with more storage space and all the electronics required in place.
Utility Area
Existing-The balcony adjacent to the kitchen is used as the utility area. Problem-No ironing and laundry storage area. Solution-Designating a space for utility with ironing board and storage for laundry.
Solution-To create a specific space for the family lounge with comfortable sofas and television console
Master Bedroom
Existing-The master bedroom isn’t very big in size and no attached bathroom to it. The storage space isn’t enough. There is no dedicated area for my dad to work. The only window that the room has is very small but there is a balcony which freshens up the room. There is no proper sitting area for friends. Problem-Circulation space in front of the bed isn’t enough for movement. The room isn’t spacious. Proposed-A more spacious room with an attached bathroom and walk-in closet. Sitting space in the room, larger openings/windows.
Me and my sister’s room
Existing-The room is moderate in size .There is no sitting space in the room. The room is properly ventilated and receives enough light and air. Solution-To have a sitting area.
Guest room
Existing-No guest room Solution-Have a guest room with attached bathroom and storage space

Proximity Matrix Current proximity matrix Objective
To make a proximity matrix table which defines the relationship between spaces and their usage by family members and guests
Desired proximity matrix
Learning Outcome
Helps to know and establish relationship between spaces on the basis of the interaction and usage by the family members. How to place each room/area and designing them in accordance to the needs of the client(s).
Application of REM Bedrooms The rooms on the ground floor Are away from the entrance To maintain privacy which is a primary concern. On the first floor they are placed adjacent to one another as the family likes to be connected with one another
Dining and kitchen Since the family is fond of cooking and eating the dining area is central to the house. Interaction takes place mostly in this part .
Lounge The family likes to interact , that’s why the location of the family lounge is in the center , accessible from all the rooms.
In the past, most families lived together under one roof with other related families, commonly known as joint families. My grandparents lived in a joint family in Patti. When they lived together, all the women of the family stayed at home and prepared meals. The stove was lit throughout the day. All the family members interacted when they ate together, therefore a large area of the house was dedicated to the kitchen area and dining area. They ate together after serving food to the men and children. There were courtyards and rooms surrounding the courtyard. Families interacted on a daily basis in the open space. Children were mostly allotted one large room to live in, where they studied, and played games with each other. Rooms and bathrooms were relatively small as compared to the ones we have today. Every room did not have an attached bathroom, and bathrooms were shared among the family. After migration and fragmentation of families to nuclear ones, our way of living changed. Now, all the family members have different eating timings due to their own schedules. We have only one meal together, i.e. dinner. That’s the only time everyone is present at home and interacts with one another. We’re too pre occupied with ourselves and work, which causes some days to pass without much interaction. Everyone wants their privacy to be respected and have been dedicated separate rooms. We spend most of the time in our rooms and keep to ourselves. With hours of travelling, the hectic city routine makes us exhausted by the end of the day which also keeps us confined to our rooms. The house has been designed keeping these factors in mind and also create an interactive environment

Design Development Stage Objective
To make the final Plan of the residence (ground floor and first floor)
Process • • • • •
These zoning diagrams were then further developed on the site plan. Several plans were made, first by hand and then after finalizing the basic zoning they were further developed and worked on in AutoCAD. Beams and columns were a major hurdle in the process, which had to be overcome through critical thinking and design options that were in response to the zoning, integrating them in the most appropriate way possible. I wanted the staircase to be positioned in the center of the space and explored various kinds of staircases. The public and private spaces had to be very well defined so that there is no invasion of privacy and the family members can be comfortable in their space.
The staircases I explored:
Curved Staircase
Straight Staircase
Single Winder Staircase
Double Winder Staircase
Stage 1 Ground Floor
Pros • Central entrance, clear path • Drawing is at the entrance, easily accessible to the guests • Staircase in the east, helps in overall circulation and ventilation. Easily accessible from all the other areas. • Kitchen and utility in the west. Clothes will dry easily. • Grandmother’s room has a garden view. Will receive good amount of sunlight which will keep the room warm in winters. • Powder room is easily accessible from the Drawing room, dining area and kitchen • Staircase starts close to the dining space which makes it convenient to come from the first floor and eat • Dining will receive morning sun , keeping the temperature in the space moderate and pleasant with openings.
First Floor
Cons • The kitchen will remain hot during summers. • Furniture placement in the sibling room doesn’t appropriately use the space. • Master bathroom and closet have separate entries from different ways. This placement isn’t comfortable for daily use of the space. • Master bedroom has no working/study area. • No view from sibling/master bedroom • Pantry area is closed and isolated.
Stage 2 Ground Floor
Pros • Central entrance, clear path • Staircase in the east, helps in overall circulation and ventilation. Easily accessible from all the other areas. • Kitchen and utility in the west. Clothes will dry easily. • Grandmother’s room has a garden view. Will receive good amount of sunlight which will keep the room warm in winters. • Drawing is at the entrance, easily accessible to the guests • Powder room is easily accessible from the Drawing room, dining area and kitchen • Staircase starts close to the dining space which makes it convenient to come from the first floor and eat • Dining will receive morning sun , keeping the temperature in the space moderate and pleasant with openings.
First Floor
Cons • Master bedroom has no working/study area. • No view from sibling/master bedroom • Pantry area is closed and isolated. • Terrace area needs to be built up properly • Powder room is a little far from the lobby area and is clustered between the kitchen space and drawing room • Lobby area is too big and the space ahead of it is wasted with no function at all. • Family lounge seating doesn’t respond to the curved staircase and looks odd.
Stage 3 First Floor
Ground Floor
Pros • Drawing room is at the entrance and has a separate entrance as well, making it extremely comfortable to settle in the guests. • Powder room is closely located near the dining area, drawing room and conveniently placed near the kitchen. • Central staircase, accessible from all the areas. • Dining and staircase in the east, receiving good morning sun; moderate temperate and pleasant. • Kitchen and utility in the west, clothes will dry easily and utensils kept in the kitchen too. • Openings at the entrance with skylight and planters adds to the aesthetics of the entrance. • Outside the main entrance door there is sitting space and a water body. • Grandmother’s room has a garden view. Will receive good amount of sunlight which will keep the room warm in winters. • Openings in pantry area with sitting makes the space interactive and fun,
Cons • •
Kitchen is on the west, will remain hot in summers Grandmother’s room will be hotter than other rooms in winters
Concept Design Approach
The house analysis activity helped me realize the existing problems in my house and provide solutions to them. The design brief made me organize these problems into different categories such as zoning, space usage, clearance etc. and decide the location, size and adjacency of the rooms in response to their relationship with one another. The current and desired quality chart clearly defined the requirements that were to be kept in mind while designing the new space. Proximity matrix defines the location of rooms and their placement accordingly. Bubble diagrams used the information from the proximity matrix and played a significant role in placement of room, kitchen, garden, verandah etc. It divides the space into two floors. It determines the connections between rooms and their relationship with each other. They helped me in deciding the size of a particular room and their connection through entrance. From the bubble diagrams I moved to zoning of the spaces, which clearly presents the location of the space and its relation with other spaces. The public and private spaces are segregated and connected through transitional areas which are semi public and semi private. Zoning of spaces was then translated into the site plan area and changes were made in regard to the columns and beams that were already existing on the site and design the space accordingly. While designing the opening, both the internal and external façade were kept in mind so that there is a balance in the lower and upper floor and it doesn’t look disoriented. A number of furniture placements were tried and the most suitable was chosen as the final one. Staircase played a major role in designing the space as its placement is very crucial in connecting both the floors. The final step was converting 2D drawing into 3D. First a paper model was made to visualize the space in 3D. Elevations in the paper model gave an idea as to how the space will turn out eventually. Then the 3D was moved in SketchUp. While the 3D model gave a good idea in determining the elevations and openings, mistakes were still there and needed to be addressed. Changes were made accordingly and the space was balanced out.
Analysis of Residential space Zoning Public
Private
Form and Space
Most of the private spaces are on the first floor. The privacy level gradually increases as one moves in the house.
Clearance
The house is spacious and there is enough circulation space to comfortably perform daily activities.
Symmetry
Symmetrically balanced spaces. Master bedroom is asymmetrically balanced with balcony and study on one side balancing the washroom on the other
Axis
Linear axis on the ground floor Radial and linear axis on the upper floor
Proximity
Proximity of central spaces on both the floors. These are the spaces where interaction takes place and centralizing it fulfills the purpose more effectively.
Openings and natural light
There’s ample natural light in the house , sunlight penetrates through multiple openings, making the space more pleasant.
Configuration
Termination of space Pass by spaces
Paper Model Objective
To make a paper model on CAD plan(1:100) with all the elevations and openings in place

Brief
Shows both the floors Entrance of the house and porch Spatial division with walls Openings Staircase and stairwell Terrace/ balcony with pergola Furniture in all the spaces
Ground Floor The entrance area has a water body and a sitting area, making the space look pleasant. Further along the entrance there is a partition and then there is a depressed area which is the living room. The formal drawing room/living area has a separate entry as well. There is a patio in front of the living with an overhead to sit and enjoy the weather. The powder room is adjacent to the dining area and drawing room so that it can be accesses by both family members and guests easily. There is a 3 column divider between dining area and drawing area to demark the public and semi private space The Staircase is central and adjacent to the dining area. The dining area has huge sliding doors for east sun to penetrate in and make the space fresh. The kitchen area is just in front of the dining area with a small opening on the interior side. It has a small sitting area at the island counter. A window on the west side for drying of utensils. The utility area is in the kitchen on one side. Beside the kitchen is my grandmother’s room. The sun from the south side will keep the room warm in winters and the overhead will keep temperature moderate in summer and prevent the harsh sun rays from reaching the room. There is also a garden and patio on the south side where one can sit on a pleasant day and enjoy the view.

Design Brief
Learning Outcome
Designing a space keeping the requirements of the client in mind. Balancing spaces integrating principles of design Designing with existing beams and columns
First Floor As we climb up there are openings lighting up the entire staircase and spaces closer to that area.
The family lounge is the space one comes across first. After spending some time on the ground floor and coming up all the family members would want to sit and relax and talk to one another. This kind of a placement makes them sit together and talk instead of heading to their rooms first. Further ahead is the guest room. Since there are not many guests coming, its placed in the west. Guests that come usually sit and interact with us. The master bedroom is spacious and on the north-west side. It has a balcony and an opening on the north side which wouldn’t allow excessive heat to come in but there will be light in the room through the day. The sibling bedroom is on the north east side. It will receive good morning sun and light throughout the day. Temperature in the room will also remain pleasant. There is a balcony on the north side to sit with friends. On the south side there is a terrace and pantry area with bar. There is also a sitting area in front of the terrace to enjoy the outside view from the inside for the times when the weather is extremely harsh. There is a pergola over the terrace to prevent the harsh rays of sun coming in. The pantry has openings on 2 sides where there are bar stools for sitting, eating and enjoying food while sitting in the open. It also makes the space interactive and fun.
