At their finest, cities bring people together, build connections and provide opportunities. At their challenged state, cities are stretched to their limits in terms of their infrastructure and their rising demand for more land and thus cities are on a constant struggle to connect the newly established zones of the city with the existing extents. This problem exists in many of the metropolitan cities of our age wherein one of the solutions to this particular problem is to develop high density establishments along mass rapid transit systems which solves two key as pects of the existing problem (ease of access and accessibility to infrastructure, amenities).

“Expanding the public realm through the utilization of Mixed use typology“

The project aims to develop a mixed use program building while taking into consideration the surrounding precinct, wherein the main aim is to expand the existing open space and reorient them in order for the public to access them.

WHY: Rapid

expansion of cities is inevitable given the urbanisation that accompanies the exponential growth of population and rising incomes. It is imperative to focus on developing of dense, socially-mixed neighbourhoods in cit ies. Such areas promote human-scale urban environments complemented by healthy public green spaces, vibrant markets(commercial),and a range of affordable housing and public transportation options to maintain livability. The intermodal hub produces a complete living environment, the project puts in place “high-density mixed-use development created in harmony with a transportation hub and surrounding communities”. This intermodal transit system intends to sup port economic growth by saving time and money lost in com mute by generating new jobs supported by manufacturing, construction and transit operations and generating potential for investment in real estate and infrastructure development.

Connect: A city needs a tight network of streets and paths for pedestrians and cyclists as well as public transit. Creating highly permeable places allows for a variety of mobility options that make trips more direct and decrease the trip timings.

Compact : In a compact city, activities are located closer to one another, requiring less time and energy to connect. When all the principles are applied collectively, a thriving compact city is created.

Densify : By building up instead of out, cities absorb ur ban growth in a more compact way. Density supports a lively mix of activities and better transport services, but also requires that the transport systems can handle the increase in ridership

Mix: A connected city becomes more animated when there is a mix of activities along the streets and paths. Different uses encourage shorter trips and more lively neighborhoods.

When a city grows in population, the architecture in and around it changes. The needs of the people grow and with it the infrastructure need for the people too.

Similarly the intent that was started off with was for it to be a conceptual interpratation of amalgamating the various exisiting activities while also trying to expand the public realm of open spaces for various public activities. The thesis aims to expand the public realam at the ground level while also providing for the private stakeholders at the upper levels. The design idea majorly revolves around the use of the the axis andopen space integration to provide a landmark experience. The design hence concludes by creating an expanse of open space and landmark experience for various activities in the heart of the city, marina beach.

The historic neighbourhood of tharagupete located in the heart of bangalore cirt was the focus of our urban design studies as part of our urban design semester. During the semester all aspects of analysis was studied on a urban scale to understand the entire locality and a key aspect of history was also studied as hertiage buildings was still present in the current day landscape of the area. After carefully studies all layers of the site, a structure map was propsoed and further develoepd into full scale urban interventions. These interventions were designed in such a way that the users are always in visual connect with hertiage building of the site. The programs of these interventions were designed in a such way to maximize the number of people visiting there therefore increasing the exposure of the hertiage buildings as well. DE PETE

Along the entire precinct three key transportation junctions were identified and further studied in detail to understand the exisiting problems of the junctions in terms of move ment of people, vehicles traffic intensity, typologies of buildings along the road. These studies have later on had a great impact while finalizing the urban scale interventions as well as what type of programs to propose. The junctions also was up for redesign due to the low flow of vehicles.

One of the first few observances with respect to the site was the presense of KR market which was a large attraction within the area. Due to the history of the pete area, the KR market has increased value in its presence acting as market for various goods such as flower and fruits. The next few layers of study was all about the transport system and how people and goods actually arrive into the historic area that is called the “pete” of bangalore.

Once all layers of precinct study was finished, the team had come up with a structure map proposal whichw as further younger city precinct.

Institutional Design |2020| Semester VI “Designing a culinary institute by emphasizing private vs public spaces“

The site was located in institutional neighbourhood of bangalore. This locality was known as “vasanth nagar”. This precinct had next to no eateries and restaurants. Hence the program which was de veloped was a mix of public programs and institutional programs to fit into the precincts’s existing programs. A culinary institute and fine dining restaurant was the main program. The locality also no space for both outdoor and indoor events. Hence the concept developed was with a split level building with the private functions on the top and the public programs along the ground level. the space inbe tween this private and public programs was developed as an out door event space. where community cooking and kitchens for teach ing various cuisince was placed along with various spots for stalls.

The Idea of spilting the private and public functions with an intermediate floor was a great idea as the inbetween levels could be used for various semi private activities which are accessed by both the public and private people. Along the ground level various cafes and a fine dining restaurant is placed. the next floor accomadates variosu kitchens which are used as classrooms by students who are aspiring chefs & doubles up as community kitchen as well. The model showcases the western facade of the building responding to the lush views of the empty plots with fully grown trees. The private and public programs are seperated using 8 massive columns and an array of space frames to support the weight of the building. Fenestrations were craved out from the volume with respect to the program on the inside and the opportunity for views on the outside. These windows also had a second layer of lourves which let out the aroma while keeping in all the unwanted smoke which were all drained using industry grade kitchen services which included chimneys.

Institutional Design |2021| Semester IX “ After school learning center for children emphasizing practicality “

The site was located in close proximity to the Tharagupete area of Bangalore, and was right behind a “makkala koota park” (kids park). The context was predominently residential with a mix of com mercial and many schools noteably the fort high school which was located on eastern edge abounding the site. This provided for a unique proposition which would be able to combine the makkala koota park and the fort high school together into an entire block for childerns activities and learnings. The program mainly focused on the topics which were not included in the curriculum of the schools as the emphasis was on making the childern grow in knowledge not only on the topics deemed necessary but other aspects of life as well. The learning pedalogy adapted was “inside and outside”
