April 2014|Vol. 1| Issue 1
Greetings from Your Lieutenant Governor Hey Division 11/18c! I am extremely excited to be your Lieutenant Governor for the 2014-2015 year. I am a grade eleven student at Abbotsford Senior Secondary School. I served as Club President last year which was when I developed my love for Key Club. I enjoy playing video games, rugby and football. Serving is my passion because I truly believe that if one of my actions can make someone’s day better or even make them smile, it was worthwhile. I am looking forward to meeting each of you during the course of this year. I hope to see you all at the DCMs and Canada Rally (more information to come). I am so lucky to be a part of such an outgoing and enthusiastic division. The passion for service I see in your eyes continues to inspire me. I hope I will be able to serve you all well this year. If you ever need to express concern, discuss ideas or just talk about Key Club, do not hesitate to contact me.

Greetings from Your District Board District Governor-Lisa Antonio Dear Pacific Northwest District, The ending of District Convention is always hard, but it also marks the beginning of another Key Club year, and another year of service. If you have not already met me, I am Lisa Antonio, and I am honored to have the chance to serve as your District Governor for the next year. I am so privileged to be leading such a diverse and enthusiastic district, and I am excited to start building upon our strengths and creating new solutions for our district’s weaknesses. In this upcoming year I want to focus on clubs and members. I want to make sure clubs are thriving and increasing not only membership, but active membership. I want each club member to know the District Board is there to serve the members. I am inspired by the love and passion each one of you has for the act of service. Keep up the amazing work, and remember that ever single minute you spend serving the community is changing the world around you in a positive way. Remember to always keep service in your heart, and no matter what is going on in life, if you are serving, you can always find love. Keep in mind that in hard times, you always have your Key Club family to lean back on, and depend on. Know that the things you have done in Key Club, and the people’s lives you have touched along the way will never be forgotten. Once again I am so grateful to have the chance to serve all of you. This year’s District Project is….ELIMINATING MNT! What is MNT? In 30 countries around the world, maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) can quickly turn the joy of childbirth into tragedy. MNT kills one baby every nine minutes. Its effects are excruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. There is little hope of survival. And tetanus kills mothers too.
Can MNT be stopped? Yes! MNT is highly preventable. Just three doses of a 60-cent immunization protect mothers, who then pass on the immunity to their future babies. Together, Kiwanis and UNICEF can stop this disease.
Who suffers from MNT? MNT is caused when tetanus spores, found in soil everywhere, come into contact with open cuts during childbirth. The disease strikes the poorest of the poor, the geographically hard to reach and those without health care.
Why hasn't MNT been eliminated already? UNICEF has helped to successfully eliminate MNT in many countries. But in 30 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and North America, it still strikes babies and mothers who have little or no access to health care — either because they are poor, live in remote areas or are caught in humanitarian emergencies. More funds and resources are needed to reach all babies and mothers at risk.
What is Key Leader? Key Leader is a weekend experiential leadership program for today's young leaders. This lifechanging event focuses on service leadership as the first, most meaningful leadership-development experience. Participants begin by attending a Key Leader conference, which is a weekend retreat. Large and small group workshops, discussions and team-building activities take place over the course of the weekend. Students have opportunities to learn leadership skills that will help them to change their schools, communities, and world for the better.
Personal Experience, I went to Key Leader last year and it completely changed me as a leader. I became more aware of how a leader should help their organization flourish. During the weekend, I made many friendships which I have to this day. Key Leader was absolutely a terrific experience and I am looking forward to going again in the near future. Structure Individual Key Clubs belong to divisions, which belong to districts, which comprise Key Club International. Districts There are 33 organized districts. Each district, normally defined by state or nation, tends to match a similar Kiwanis district and is led by a governor, who is elected by delegates at the annual district convention. Divisions Districts are divided into divisions and each division has a lieutenant governor, a student leader who carries out the district’s policies and provides support to the clubs. Clubs Key Clubs are established in a high school or equivalent institution. A community-based club also may be chartered. Elected officers can include president, one or more vice presidents, secretary, treasurer, editor and one director from each class.
Farewell from Shirley To my division, I do not where to begin to express my love and gratitude for my division. We have underwent such tremendous growth this past year, from making salmons as our mascot, growth in membership and chartering a new club. These are all growth that can be measured on paper but the growth that I am the most proud of is the increase in passion. The increase in passion immeasurable, but, for me it is the one that makes me the most proud. I see the passion and drive in all of you to make a change in this world and it inspires me while, bringing a smile on my face. Because of your passion, our division is able to have a record year. The passion has also prompted our division to change from the clubs being in competition with each other to helping each other out, and into one big family. As I am now retired, and with a lot of free time I am reflecting back on the goals that I have set for myself. The results of the goals are great but it is not what resonates in my mind, it is the love I have experienced. The love and support that each and everyone of you have given me is unbelievable. I am so humbled to have the opportunity to serve our division. Thank you to all the members, club officers, Kiwanians and adults for you continual support, I could not have served our division without them. I am so proud of each and everyone of you. I am confident that our division under the leadership of Pranav will achieve even more. Please show Pranav the love and support that I have received during my term. I hope to see you at DCMs. I love you all. Shirley Chou Lieutenant governor of Div.11/18C 2013-2014
