infozone design for the Indian Railways

designthesis duration 3 months

what ? is it

“Infozone”, is an area created to enhance

the onboard experience of

journeys for passengers on the AC compartments of a quintessential Indian

who?

train. The people traveling in the AC compartments belong primarily to the middle class and higher middle class, which form the back bone of the Indian economy. “Infozone” has been designed as a response to the losses occurred due to stiff competition offered by the budget airline companies. This service aims to make unpleasant and uninteresting long distance journeys more enjoyable. “Infozone” has been designed for the Indian Railways, a state owned company, to regain the market share and sustain their leadership in the Indian travel and transport sector.”

development stages of model

“Infozone consists of two plug in modules each hosting two kiosks. These kiosks allow passengers to spend some time watching news, stock updates, listen to music and download them on to their mobile phones.

Plug in Module scale of model 1:10

how ? to use it

It works on a cycle of 15 minutes to allow everyone a chance to use it. Initially there would be one zone per 4 carriages, i.e 250 passengers. Gradually this number would be increased owing to demand and revenue generated by the product.

the exterior skin is cut open and the seats in that zone are removed.

Cut it

the empty space thus created is then modified and kiosks moved into position.

Plug it

once Infozone is ready i.e. the kiosks are moved into place, wired up and ready to use, a new skin will be put into place having space or adverts and promotions.

economic strategy

designthesis

Indian Railways has a total state monopoly on India's rail transport. It is one of the largest and busiest rail networks in the world, transporting fourteen million passengers and more than one million tonnes of freight daily . IR is the world's largest commercial or utility employer, with more than 1.6 million employee.

Infozone will be created by ripping out seats from one coupe and replaced by plug in modules. Ripping out 8 seats and introducing new modules will be an expensive makeover for the railways. But as the Indian Railways spans across the country and carries millions of passengers every year, it can easily attract sponsorship from big private business houses like Airtel, Hutch (mobile phone service providers), Reliance (telecommunication), NDTV, Star TV, Zee TV (News networks) etc in India. smart card ticket to help enhance customer loyalty

These private houses can sponsor these modules and have their names associated with the Indian Railways and inherit the ready made customer base of the Indian Railways. The sponsors have a captured audience as they will be allowed to display their name on the new smart sponsors name and logo card tickets, promotional panels created on the external skin of Infozone and the plug in module itself. It is a win-win situation for: 路the passengers, as they get a new experience of traveling, the Indian Railways, as it gets an image make-over, customer loyalty and generate revenue from sponsorship and advertising, the sponsors, who get to capture and accumulate the customer base of the Indian Railways.

Alteranative Uses The plug in module can be altered by removing the Kiosks and inserting a new function like a first aid module, an office use space, an entertainment module, a handicapped module, a cafeteria, a pantry etc...

cafĂŠ module

All these modules when inserted on different parts of a train, will remove the existing deficit of essential and ancillary services on an Indian Railway train .

The task was to brainstorm creative new ideas and to offer thought provoking challenges to traditional viewpoints of the retail environment and experience for M&S’s sustainable “Plan A” action plan launched in January 2007.The designs sketched were a response to their aim to become carbon neutral within 5 years time.

Reclaim, reuse and covert a shipping container into an eco Pop Up-pod in order to mobilize the customers to use sustainable materials and make them aware of the same. Shipping containers are used as a symbol of SUSTAINABLE reuse. These pods will be the forerunner (model concept store) for the four M&S concept stores which they plan to open soon .

It educates customers about eco friendly materials, their uses and application and most importantly their availability by tagging all the material used in the store.

“Click is a promotional item, a product which explains and improves the main or host product, the FujiFilm F10 camera. It explains the scene position function, (which one is to be used in which scenario) which is less likely to be understood and used. It is a simple interactive mechanical product with a production cost of less than 2% of the retail price of the product it is to be given away with.

Internet searches were used to identify emerging technologies, which are subjected to critical evaluation for their design potential. The emerging technology chosen was Organic Light Emitting Diodes. Unique Design Potential of OLED’s are • Light emitting. • Thin Films. • Consume less energy. • Is Rugged. • Light weight. • Flexible. • Easy to construct. • Can be sewn into Materials. • Fast switching Speeds.

screen in closed position

Change in screen technology has created new design opportunities. Bulky cathode ray tube has given way to TFT and LCD screens which allowed the origin of laptops.

ROLLOTOP is an attempt to redefine the computer using rollable OLED screens.

Rollotop allows the screen to become an accessory for the user, they may not have to carry his screen everywhere, depending on their use the screen shall be changed or upgraded.

Rollotop used as an entertainment module.

WaterUrn

creativelying

Constructing a narrative around a product or architectural feature, space or building is paramount to making a convincing case for any new design proposal. At MA level, students are expected to research, develop and design projects that have both "authority" and "believability" acknowledging that successful design proposals originate, materialize and operate from within the wider world itself. This particular exorcize as a part of the Post-Optimal" MA module, develops an alternative design methodology (i.e. another ways of generating new viewpoints and ideas), and throws some fun into the miz too. PArticipants were therefore asked to compose 100 words of "creative lying" about an appropriate subject of their choice; that would engage the viewer with their alternative narrative. Of course lying being an untruth needs careful consideration-it has to be convincing.

Water Urn This Water Urn designed by NASA Senior Design Project Ideas under the ESMD Space Grant Program, is a prototype of the product which has accompanied the latest Opportunity Rover on its mission to collect water samples available in traces on our neighboring planet's surface Mars. Peter Theisinger, the Project Manager believes that the Urn would help them learn and study the actual water and soil condition on Mars. The water urn is made out of an aluminum honeycomb structure sandwiched between face graphite-epoxy sheets, which dissipate heat generated by atmospheric friction. The Urn has a capacity of 2 liters, works on solar power, and is positioned at "El Captain" rock.
