Can the Jacarandas inspire architecture? The form is inspired by the tree with a heavy service core contrasting with a light, transparent, and floating served spaces around the core. The use of architectural mesh is to represent the idea of a canopy formed by the branches of the trees. The climate allows for a breathable building with light wells that help circulate air while providing sunlight into the deep spaces of the building. How can structure be used to do something more? Standard approach will not help organize the spaces effectively. Splitting one column into four thin columns help organize various elements within the laboratory. The five foot separation helps lay the circulation and service elements successfully. Can a public plaza serve all the needs of a community? A plaza in Mexico City only needs two elements to be successful. It needs to provide shade and seating. Any form of shade is very welcoming due to high altitude of where Mexico City is located. With the density in the city, the population in the city has learned to occupy every inch of comfortable space one can find. The street vendors and musicians form a fabric of society which is undeniably local and true to its urban culture.

LIVING MEMORIAL FOR THE DEAD How can a you memorialize a recurring catastrophe? Fall 2018 Inhotim, Brazil Professor Fernando Lara Design Excellence Nominee 17
In 2015, Brazil was struck by a mining catastrophe that killed 19 people, displaced thousands of families and killed a major river 270 miles to the Atlantic Ocean. This project is about how awareness about such disasters can be brought to the international community through art and architecture in an existing context of Inhotim, a 7.8 mi2 art park funded and operated by a mining billionaire. This pavilion sits at the edge of Inhotim and the mine that is in its backyard and attempts to expose the two sides of the same coin. The spaces that are created are meant for user interaction rather than guided circulation. The garden reveals the beauty of nature and visitors are encouraged to take their shoes off to heighten the experience. A turn around the corner reveals the ramp that is surrounded by rebars that hold the boulders from the mine. The ramp reveals part of Inhotim or the mine slowly as you move up the sequence when the wood structure with swings is finally exposed. Only one person is allowed at a time up the structure where the sounds of the 19 creaking swings representing the dead might haunt while the awe of the view starts to bring some meaning about the two sides. The visitor has to choose which way he wants to face. Either towards the scars of the mine or towards the beautifully manicured “natural landscapes of Inhotim.

HYDRO THINKERY How can a water facility be a community resource for its citizens? Fall 2017 New Braunfels, Texas Professor Nichole Wiedemann 33
The site strategy for the project dealt with ideas of juxtaposition in landscape and architecture and finding overlaps and connections within this framework. We were tasked to create spaces that help bring the community together by acknowledging the role of water for the city of New Braunfels and recognizing the role in the city. The genesis of my project began by answering what can architecture of water mean. My program dealt with water in multiple ways, and it was situated on the edge of the river. The inspiration of how water moves through the karst limestone provided the initial parti. The water moves within the limestone under the heavy mass with points of infiltration for fresh water. My project was conceived with similar conditions where the points of infiltration could be light and the path is undefined. The Hydro Thinkery is a proposed learning center for adults and children where each space deals with a different quality of water which are juxtaposed against one another by not just creating transitional spaces but seams that seem spacial.

ARTIST RESIDENCY Can a building blend in the landscape while making it presence felt? Spring 2018 Santa Fe, New Mexico Professor Elizabeth Danze and John Blood Design Excellence Nominee
In collaboration with Nicole Vice (M.Arch) Brooke Frank (MFA) Matthew Cronin (MFA) 37
Santa Fe New Mexico 38
This artist residency is a collaboration between two architecture and two fine art students. The chosen site has an existing house, home to multiple land sculptures dispersed throughout the hilly terrain. Our proposal is to consolidate all the functions of the artist residency into one structure in order to minimize impact on the landscape and preserve the existing site for the artists to discover. The proposed building is situated on a low ridge-line, distinctly separated from the existing house, which provides views to both sides. The building is organized through two masses along the exterior of the building where all the service spaces are carved into the thickness. This leaves the interior of the building to be open served spaces with varying porosities, which heightens the distinction between the exterior and interior. While the main interior spaces are structured, the poche invites a unique opportunity to carve into the mass and create moments of discovery and individualization for the occupants.

SNF ThessalonĂki Pediatric Hospital ThessalonĂki, Greece This hospital in northern Greece is a provides tertiary pediatric care in the outskirts of the port city of Thessaloniki. Biophilic design is a crucial concept in all three hospitals to increase connectivity of the patients to nature. My contribution to the project came in during Schematic Design phase and I was in-charge of sections, elevations and models.
