Copper Chimney, is an institution. It was a pioneer of North Indian cuisine in Mumbai that went on to become a chain that spans from Kala Ghoda to Andheri. You must go there for the three-page menu devoted solely to kebabs. It's truly a fabulous range, quickly traversing ground from Peshawari raan to achari murg tikka to seekhs. The specialty of the house is the kaali kebab. The rest of the spread is nearly as delightful - a richly marinated burrah Chop and an excellent Chakori kebab wolfed down with a warm and crumbly missi roti. The breads are just right here, with a choice including a fenugreek-heavy khasta roti, roomalis, naans and tandoori rotis. Vegetarians needn't feel left out as the shahjahani paneer tikka and the tandoori gobi pitthewali are good choices. There's also an extensive curry menu with dhaba dependables like bhuna ghosht, dal makhani, Muglai dishes and biryanis. Copper Chimney, High Street Phoenix, Senapati Bapat Marg, Lower Parel. Mahjong
Manchester United Café Bar
According to the marketing blurb, the interior design of Mahjong, has been inspired by Zen Buddhism. The décor has a plumand-yellow colour scheme, a geometrical design painted on the far wall, sagging bamboo poles, and a murky yellow glass wall adjoining the kitchen. The decor certainly does live up to the standard that it had set out to achieve. Chef CK Hsiunh, formerly of the Leela Hotel, is in charge of Mahjong's menu, and has put together a selection of Chinese dishes that's heavy on the fish, ranging from imperial lobster in a sauce of your choice to hunan spicy pomfret. The salt-and-pepper crab starter is a meal in itself and highly addictive - a generous helping of soft cakes of crab out of the shell fried with spring onions. The kung pao chicken goes well with the mushroom rice steamed with rice wine in a clay pot. The staff is attentive, friendly, wellinformed about the food and its preparation, and are more than ready to offer heartfelt advice Mahjong, Hotel Ramee Guestline, 757 SV Road, Khar (2648-5085/7788). The easiest way to test Manchester United Café Bar's friendliness is by walking in wearing the jersey of a rival football club. And believe it or not, you won't be shown the door. MUCB's first outlet in India knows that it can't only cater to supporters of the popular English football club. Inspired by the club's jersey colours, the décor is red and black. The wall next to the merchandise corner displays some memorable moments from last year, when ManU won the Premier League. Seating options include the "Manager's Bench", in honour of ManU's revered manager Alex Ferguson, a private dining room and bar where football fans can chant merrily during matches. The menu has food listed under headers from football lingo. Appetisers are "Kick-off" and desserts "Goal!!!" The crunchy cheese jalapeno poppers are perfect with a beer. Go for a Manchester club sandwich - a doublelayered toasted sandwich with chicken, chicken bacon, fried egg and cheese. The portions are generous and for dessert, try a chocolate walnut brownie with vanilla icecream and chocolate sauce. The sports programming on MUCB's 19-foot screen, the energetic ambience and booze are a bigger attraction for the voluble Red Devils. Oriental Palate by Puro Of all the cuisines that Mumbai has adopted, debauched and loved, Chinese food holds a special place in our hearts. For many, the assaulting aroma of Schezwan sauce - the authenticity of which is as debatable as its official spelling - triggers memories of loud lunches in crowded college canteens. Oriental Palate has blackand-red dĂŠcor, with customary Chinese characters, bronze Buddha and origami napkins lending it the formal ambience. Their pan-Asian menu is a mix of the dependable basics like Thai curry, Malaysian flat noodles and momos as well as chilled Vietnamese rolls stuffed with glass noodles and served with chilli plum chutney and a selection of vegetarian and seafood sushi. The seafood tempura platter has generous helpings of deep-fried jumbo prawns and super-sized calamari rings glistening with oil. Oriental Palate definitely succeeds in blurring the line between Indian and Chinese food. Oriental Palate, Hotel Metro Palace, Opposite Globus, 355 Hill Road, Bandra (W) (2643-1234). Prego Among the first sights to greet you as you enter Prego, the Italian restaurant is a vision of Chef Rosanno Renzelli hovering behind an impressive assemblage of steaming pots. The restaurant is all sleek lines and chic glass; sections of yellow, orange and red glass descend from the ceiling like modern-day punkahs. The menu offers a tantalising array of dishes from across Italy. The wines come with sheets of elaborate tasting notes, adding to the fun. The food of the coastal Lazio region uses seafood and meat, and the crisp calamari, tangy seafood broth and succulent tenderloin steak, brown on the outside, invitingly pink inside and is a delicious demonstration of the region's bounties. Healthy portions of vegetables characterise Umbrian cuisine, as is evident from the creamy melanzane alla parmigiana brinjal with a blanket of parmesan cheese
in a simple tomato sauce. By the time dessert is served - tiramisu and a selection of cheeses - you will barely have the energy to lift yourself out of the chairs. Solitaire Restaurant
Always well done
Shikara Who would've thought that one of the hotels along the Mumbai-Pune expressway housed a Kashmiri shikara-themed restaurant? Shikara has all the jazz of ghazal singers, dining in house-boats on a pond and waddling geese. The moment you enter you're taken aback by the sheer size of the boats and the open air roof under which sit ghazal singers, magicians, astrologers, mehndiwalas and choodiwalas. There are three different kinds of seating arrangements: a shikara or houseboat (including an air-conditioned one), traditional baithaks and regular sofas, for those who would rather just skip the shenanigans and focus on the food. Though they have a variety of Indian and Chinese dishes, we recommend sticking to the Kashmiri fare like chicken yakhni, paneer gulnar, goshtaba and rogan gosht. while your table is getting set up. Four areas, each with a different vibe, are spread out over 30,000 square feet. The bar is boggling. Triangular and trapezoid panels of wood cover its walls and ceiling in jagged planes. Spare, mood-lit stairs lead to a partial mezzanine. Downstairs, the very white verandah right by the entrance has low white tables and rust sofas covered and the dramatic branched arches. Their signature, Tote Mary is delicate with balsamic vinegar and crushed cucumber. The celery martini, with macerated lime is turbid green, and has more intensity than you'd expect from the negative-calorie vegetable. There is tiramisu, but as a nonsweet appetiser inspired by the dessert, with mushrooms and walnuts, with red wine poached pears and gorgonzola mousse on the side. A double duck dish has seared foie gras, a mini duck burger, morel brioche and cranberry marmalade. Both are lovely. Go for the quirkiest-sounding desert and
try the white chocolate fondant, the shell yields with the touch of a fork prong to let the fudgy, white-chocolate lava escape.
