3W course This course offered both group based and final individual assignments. Importance was given to solid research to reach a state of understanding that helped us better reach a final form. I walked away with experience and better understanding about softwares like "Pages", "Keynote" and "Photoshop". my experience with working in a group also became richer. There was a sense of some freedom, even while working under some guidelines.

"Choose your favourite colour." we were asked to choose our favourite colour and join in a group of people sharing the same colour combined with one other colour to research and find out basic and interesting facts about them.

Above is the presentation chart our group came up with. Purple being mine and Anannya's pick while Blue was chosen by Anirudha and Saumya

Sectors: the big assignment. We were told to choose a sector as a group, upon which we were to research and study the pattern of colour palette used in that perticular sector.

Education in Ahmedabad was the sector we took.

This entire assignment was dealt with in the following manner: *Research, along with fieldtrips and Documenting. *Choosing a smaller sector within Education as it is a vast field. (Pre-School) *Making of mindmap, moodboard, deriving colour palette. *Thumbnails of Forms, Experimenting with the form incorporating the colour palette derived with digital media. *Final form and concept, documenting the entire course in ppt presentations.

1W course

This course took place through intensively interesting lectures and a movie appriciation. These lectures covered several topics based on semiotics, phylosophy of the society and human mind. A vast range of interesting topics were covered in just a short week. I had a good revisit to my writing skills while going through my assignments.

Assignment: Documenting my understanding of the entire course

5W course Over a span of five weeks, this course was quiet hectic and a vast amount of assignments were covered around this duration. Intensive sketching exercises to studying illustration styles and finally coming up with your own style of illustration was covered during this time period. This course was quiet exhaustive and demanded a lot of energy and observation. There were a lot of interesting things learnt and self learning, curiosity and good observation was promoted during this course. Somewhere down the line I wish there was more positivity in the feel of the course, however there has been good exposure and a learning experience.

Self Portrait:

As we can see in my sketch, I have depicted a pencil, expressing my fondness towards sketching, and headphones that expresses my love for music, specially the ones that touches my heart.

here we were asked to incorporate two manmade objects close to us and draw a self portrait representing our persona.

Roy Lichtenstein

during our course, I had to study Roy Lichtenstein's work and try and replicate his style. His works were deeply appreciated as American pop culture. He is known for taking a part of a comic or advertisement and making a bigger version of it on canvas, replicating the style, sometimes adding a small twist to it, to match his humor and sarcasm. He worked mainly with acrylic, flat colours, benday dots and was keen on precision. The distinct uniqueness of his work is his use of perfectly hand drawn Ben-day dots.

My version of Lichtenstein artwork. the bensday dots have been derived through stamp marking with the back of a pencil.

Ahmedabad assignment: We started this assignment by exploring the city and observing elements that reflect the essence of Ahmedabad. Rough illustrations were made based on the size of sheet we chose and final concepts were chosen. Much exploration of the city and understanding was experienced during this time.

few illustration ideas:

Chosen concept after the concept was chosen, changes were made based on discussion and examination of a few elements.

the second part of this assignment included using colour in our illustration based on screen printing, which meant I was restricted to only three basic colours.

Recipe Illustration

We were each given a Gujarati snack item to explore and find out how it is made. Fieldtrips to shops and interracting with the shopkeepers was very insightful.

My illustration of the recipe to make sev khamani was made within a folder in foldable polaroid style illustrations. (as shown in the image)

Final assignment: Our Final assignment incllude the making of a fully illustrated book in seven spreads. We were each given a story that we were to rewrite keeping the moral and feel of the story the same.

4Days course This workshop offered a similar experience as colour. With better understanding and experience it was easier for me to go about the task smoothly. The motive was to find an Identity for National Institute id Design Hyderabad. Rough thumbnails on tracing paper based on Key words were made after some research on the city and it's environment. Assignment was distributed in two people groups, each group working on different identities.

2W course

This course has been a great experience at testing my sense in composition and experimenting with the camera, specially insights about SLR has been a very fulfilling experience. We were briefed on the workings of the SLR at the beginning, and were allowed to explore on our own. Most of us have come up with very satisfying explorations and experiments. The assignments were simple, yet helped us learn with experience. Finding out about how and what goes about during development of the reel film to learning new things about the equipment was a great experience.

Black and white beginnings: After a brief introduction and arrangements of routine for the entire course, we started off with a group photo. Our first assignment was "black and white portraits individually of each group member and concept photography as a group together.", we were separated in groups and given a SLR per group, after an introduction to the technicalaties and functions of the camera. Using the SLR was quiet an experience, I remember being overly cautious and careful because once the reel has been used, it can't be undone. The beauty and subtlety of SLR was uncovered the day the prints came out.

Anirudha wanted a fun personality shot. It wasn't hard because of his natural expressions.

Anannya wanted a sad and mysterious portrait. No doubt her hair played the perfect role.

Neal wanted a Grungy shot, when we found these broken pair of sunglasses lying around in the premises. One of the best on spot quick decisions made.

the following pages display some of our Colour Photography assignment (SLR)

Our assignment included capturing the colour of Ahmedabad. This wasn't my first time travelling around the city with a camera, so I was aware of the "over welcoming" nature of people around us. However with an SLR it was all the more 'exciting' specially when people try and give their inputs of shots and asking for their picture to be taken. I had a hard time explaining how I can't waste my reel on several trial shots. Patience was of utter importance.

This individual assignment involved us capturing our daily life in ten frames. This was the first assignment that we recieved after we started working with a DSLR. Following pages show four out of thos ten frames that I had short listed.

This individual assignment involved us exploring the streets of Udaipur, were we had gone for a short field trip, and capturing the colour and mood of Udaipur.

Workshop: Calligraphy Faculty: Amit Kharsani

1W course This course was a lot about free exploration and learning of many methodes and ideas for illustration along with the training of hand at calligraphy to an introduction level. We got to try our hands at many kind of equipments and brushes. We were taught the basic of handling reeds and also were made to practice with it a lot until we got a hang of it, after which we were left free to explore with several materials like bleach and transparent photo colour.

The steadyness of the hand no matter what medium is constant. We were introduced to several styles and had the freedom to venture out to any medium or style eventually. Here Amit has used reed calligraphy pens that we cut out ourselves to write in the letters.

As we were exposed to many medium, here I'm practicing Japanese Hiragana using chinese brushes and chinese stick ink made with charcoal and camphor. Amit let me use his korean ink making stone, where I manually made the ink using a little water and rubbing the chinese stick on the stone case.

Rough sheets from practice sessions. We had several exercises as such. the seven reed pen marks on the edge of the paper determines the uniform x- height of the letters.

as soon as we learnt a few letters that could make some basic words, we started exploring. along side practice.

Typography Faculty: Jonny Pinhorn

3W course This course was a very helpful introduction to the technology and software and method involved in making a digital font. starting from manually making them keeping in mind the basic characteristic of letters to digitally converting them into a font that can be used. we worked with both Latin and Devnagri scripts and were made familiar with every step involved in a typeface making process. Softwares like "Glyphs", "illustrator" and "Fontlab" were intensively used.

Sketching Words we started the class by sketching out our letters (basic: "adhesion" ) in our hand drawn x height and photo copying them in smaller version. We tried this in Latin first and quickly moved on to Devnagri script. The purpose of this was to understand the importance of the character of ther letters and the need to be neat and sharp about it so that it can be "legible" even when made smaller.

Latin s cript: h an drawn and te d st photo copy

Devna gri Photo c script: op and tria ys ls

Signage, Clarity and Legibility: our next assignment was to make a sign or signage infusing both devnagri and latin script. This assigment was to reach a state of understading of the importance of letter shape and spacing so that there is clarity when you read it from a distance.

the uniformity in each letter or charachter is also important.

The big step towards digitising: in our next assignment we were to first practice digitising our letter, we were to digitise the Latin and devnagri script we had hand drawn. After being familiar with the most dreaded "pen tool" we moved on to a bigger assignment.

That final big assignment: In out final assignment, we had to choose a non-latin language and were to make a working font derived or inspired by an existing latin typeface that has been made within the last five years. a lot of studying of the typeface and technical understanding ensued.required. This entire process had a new learning in every step, as we were getting used to the software. NeoSans was the type face I chose to incorporate in Bngali. Because of it's simple "roundish on the rectangle edge" I didn't have to draw all the characters in sketch and it was easy for me to do directly in digital form.

st of my fonts were directly made digitally. These are the few basic trials on per, after which i shifted directly on screen, considering the basic aesthetic atures of the latin Neo Sans font.
