A message from the principal
Letters to the school manager Over the last four years I’ve had more than 3,000 letters covering various topics, ideas, concerns and advice sent to me. Now seems a good opportunity to share some of these letters with you.

Greetings to all parents, students, teachers and staff: Mr. Spain Jingkaojai
PRC Manager
Q: What is your main motivation to work at PRC? A: Students. They are the true inspiration, motivation and blessing. You have to begin with the love of these students. They are all different but adorable. They are from all walks of life, but once they are PRC students, they are our family members. We have a big household here to take care of. Really they are the blessed part of my daily life, and it is an honor to come and take care of them every day. Q: What are the big internal changes or challenges for PRC this academic year? A: For my parts, efficiency and productivity are the ones. Technology and process improvement are the key ingredients for us to move forward in these areas. Still, it is very challenging to work as a team comprising many differences to move in one direction to make PRC a better place. These are my focuses for now. Q: What do you see in the long-term future for PRC? A: These days, it is always not only a matter of change, but also the speed of change. Things happen so quickly in a manner and speed we have never witnessed before. Academically speaking, we may not see big changes in terms of the content. But for the process, methodology and technology, teaching is no longer what we used to see. Old ways no longer work. More importantly, students now can get access to any subject and knowledge wherever and whenever they want from just one tiny smartphone or one click. In this regard, PRC will be playing catch up, but will also have an eye on being innovative or ahead of the curve. It is scary but challenging, however, this is the reality of life in this modern age. We need to adjust to survive. And we are doing just that in every aspect of school management. Q: What is the project so far you are most proud of from working as school manager? A: School manager to me is just a position nothing less, nothing more. What I am proud of is not derived from holding this position per se, but rather having a chance to come back to a place I call home. To come back to serve in every way I can. To pay back, frankly speaking, what I owe this school, which is so much. That’s all it is to me, simply speaking.
“We may not be able to prepare the future for our children, but we can at least prepare our Dr. Sirinan Sriweraskul children for the future.” These words of the PRC Principal 32nd president of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt, are impressive even though they were spoken many decades ago. They reflected the trend at the time of preparing the new generation for the future world. This trend has resulted in many schools, including The Prince Royal’s College, sharing the same vision of providing quality education in order to prepare their students to have the necessary knowledge and skills to cope with life in the 21st century. The 2015 academic year is another year that sees PRC develop its curricula, teachers and staff; modify teaching methods; update classroom equipment; as well as improve school buildings to meet the international standard and be more conducive to learning. A greater number of native English-speaking teachers means our students gain better access to English both in class and outside. The teaching of science and mathematics in English in our Focused English Program, our cooperation with Queensland University of Technology in the use of STEM education, the establishment of the self-discovery centre and the development of character education through ethics classes all contribute to the progression of the school toward internationalization. We continue to build students’ skills in critical thinking and research and development using the school’s framework. Classroom teaching and extracurricular activities have also intensified in all year levels, especially high school, so that students are better prepared for higher education in the subject matters that interest them. There are still several other development projects that the school has planned that will be presented to all parents in due course. All of these developments stem from our firm commitment to providing the best education for our children so that they can lead happy lives in society and become quality citizens of the future by dint of virtue and wisdom. We are grateful to all who have contributed toward the progress and success of the school, making it one of the leading institutions in character education. We thank you.
From the editor
Greetings, my lovely readers. This is my very first column as the editor in chief of The PRC News — the school newspaper — therefore, I hope we have a great time together. Time wears on, and now it is already a new academic year. This year has a lot of different meanings for a lot different people. To some, such as 11thgraders, it is high time they started to be the leaders for one of the school’s biggest events, Sports Day. To others, for instance, upperclassmen and ninth-graders, it is about time for them to make some big decisions about their future studies. All people have their own goals to reach and dreams to carry out. But life is no bed of roses. Many times you will stumble, get lost or feel distraught, yet always keep in mind, “where there’s a will, there’s a way.” Everyone is born equally intelligent and has equal talents — I believe — but how much we can succeed depends on our endeavor and determination. I can only hope that all of you achieve your ambitions, be happy and overcome any obstacle that lies ahead.

A big change for PRC has started! By Chanamon Tammawong and Jutarat Onsri (11th Grade) Every year, our school has a student council election. This year, the election was held on June 2. The nominees were Change PRC and The Voice of PRC. They campaigned for a week before the election. In the end, most students in high school trusted in The Voice of PRC with a majority of votes. Krit Verochana, a vice chairman of The Voice of PRC, said, “I was very happy that everyone trusted our party, and I think it is because of our quality
The Voice of PRC members, the students who will lead PRC this year. members; we have collected all the greatest people from our school and our party policies are all good,” said. These are some interesting policies of The Voice of PRC: —They have a Facebook fan page for everyone to comment. —They will provide red cars for students who would like to go to extra classes. —They have a surprise service in a special event. —They will push forward restroom maintenance. “I think because of our policies that are really different and unique,” said Supasin Chanthong, the president of student council. “No one thinks we can do it, because our policies sound tough to do and almost impossible. But it is not totally impossible. So I think it would be real good if we could help them. I think everyone wants to try something new at our school and would love to see some changes.” Peeradon Suwanprated, another vice chairman of The Voice of PRC, said, “I will try to make all policies a success; by the way, there are some policies that cause some problems. But we will try to push forward, and I think they will be more than 90 percent successful.” However, we have to wait and see the revolution at PRC and whether it will be better like they said or if there won’t be anything that changes. But don’t forget that everyone is also one of the students at PRC. You can help to change PRC to be better all the time — no need to wait for student council alone.
Why do Koalas hang on trees? By Chanamon Tammawong (11th Grade)
If you are a koala fan, you may have noticed that koalas spend many hours hanging on trees without having to drink any water! Have you ever wondered how could they survive without water? Wonder no more as scientists have already found out why. According to the latest research from Melbourne University in Australia, the reason why Koalas always hang on trees is to lower their body temperature. Trees are an estimated 7 degrees Celsius cooler than air temperature from absorbing water and minerals from underground, which has a low temperature. This lets trees lower their temperatures. When the weather gets hotter, koalas try to hang on lower parts of trees. They prefer to hang on different trees than eucalyptus, which is their food source. Furthermore, researchers found that under their tummies, koalas have less fur than on other parts of their bodies. This lets them get coolness from trees. Zoologists also found out that other animals that live on trees, such as birds, leopards and worms, have the same purpose as koalas — to lower their body temperatures.

Building opening ceremonies By Teerapat Maboontham (10th grade)
On June 4, PRC had one of the biggest events of all time — the building opening ceremonies! There are two buildings that were built because students needed more rooms for their classes and other rooms for activities, so PRC came up with the plan of building these two buildings about two years ago, and they were successfully completed early this year. There are two buildings that opened that day. The first building is called the Dr. Chamrun Building. This building is for middle school students. This building includes four floors, which means there are some new rooms for many new activities and also for more education. Also in this ceremony there were many important guests who came from far away lands and also graduates. On the second and third floors of the Dr. Chamrun Building are rooms for students in eighth grade, and the fourth floor of this building adds new rooms for more classes. And also the first floor is interesting because every morning students line up on this floor, and in the evening there are aerobics for people who are interested in exercising. The second building is for high school students. It is called the Kamrap Building. This building also has four floors, and only students in the art program study in this building. On the top floor of the Kamrap Building are the computer rooms, adding many new technologies and tools for students. We can say that these two buildings are new things that PRC has given to middle and high school students. Because sometimes there aren’t enough rooms for students, PRC has solved the problem by constructing these two buildings.
FEP Day Camp By Thawanrat Phadsan and Natthanicha Kaweera (10th grade) Relationships between senior and junior students can be built by doing activities together. Day camps are a key that leads to better relationships among FEP students. On June 14, this year’s FEP Day Camp was held to strengthen relationships. This camp included middle school students and all of the teachers from FEP. Senior students prepared all activities. They separated students into groups that were named after countries around the world. In the morning, they were taken to Royal Flora Ratchaphruek. When they arrived there, teachers set up stations and brought students to nine stations, which were Running Dictation, Dance Songs, Acting Games, Blind Folded, Math, Science, Pirate Ship, Grammar Obstacle Course and Treasure Hunt. After they had lunch, there were freshmen welcoming activities, which were Hot Potato, Grouping, and Wind Blows. The juniors enjoyed attending activities at every station, especially when they met with their buddies. For FEP, your buddy is the one who takes care of you for the rest of the year. And some of graduated FEP students came to give presents to their code sisters and brothers as well.
www.prc.ac.th/en/
All of the students had a really good time during the camp. At the end of the day, the students went back to school with smiles of happiness, and they look forward to having the camp again next year.

Teachers’ Day: Thailand vs. other countries By Teejuta Rueangmanee (10th grade) As with Thailand, many foreign countries have a day to respect their teachers, too. This day is also called “Teacher Appreciation Day.” Even though we have the same purpose for this day, each country also has some differences, such as the date, history, and celebration or activities. In Thailand, this day is on the first Thursday of June. It is marked to appreciate and respect teachers who educate and take good care of us. Here are some examples of the differences in Teachers’ Day between Thailand and some other countries.
Nepal Date: Full moon day of Nepali month Ashad (usually falls in mid July) History/Purpose: Teachers’ Day is called “Guru Purnima” which “Guru” means “teacher” and “Purnima” means “Full Moon” in Nepali. Celebrating “Guru Purnima” is very old tradition and is related with ancient Hindu tradition. Among upper caste Hindus, the person who teaches “Mantras” during the “Bratabandh” ceremony is considered the real “Guru.” Celebration: Students pay homage to teachers, offer them foods and flowers and receive blessings from teachers.
Argentina Date: September 11 History/Purpose: To honor the memory and work Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, who died on this date in 1888 in Asuncion, Paraguay. Celebration: Flood some love cards, meet and greet, have a special banquet for teachers and other entertainment activities simultaneously celebrated throughout the country.
India Date: September 5 History/Purpose: To honor Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakhrishnan, a philosopher and a teacher who has excellences, and his contribution toward Indian education system Celebration: Teachers and students will go to school as usual but the usual activities and classes will be replaced by festive activities, thanks and remembrance. At some schools on this day the responsibility of teaching is taken up by the senior students to show appreciation for their teachers.
United States of America Date: The Tuesday of the first full week of May
Celebration: Students will hang a sign on each classroom door to salute the teachers within. In the National Honor Society, Student Council or other student groups will provide punch and cookies for the teachers’ lounge on this day. Students will give teachers candy, apples or other food gifts with appropriate notes attached.
www.prc.ac.th/en/
History/Purpose: The National Education Association describes National Teacher Day as “a day for honoring teachers and recognizing the lasting contributions they make our lives.”
For all the differences it’s rather obvious that for most of the countries the day has the same purpose, which is “to appreciate the things teachers had given us.” Clearly the message is “teachers” are important people in our lives.
Therefore, we should repay the teachers’ kindness by giving due attention to what are they teaching and use that knowledge to our benefit in the future.

Le français, la danse et moi
Bonjour, mes amis. Bon courage.

Head student: Korn Jaiprajong and Kwanchanok Palapong Theme: Noah The name Noah (No’a, Noah) in Hebrew means “rest” was significantly so. God is the will to break the secular humanism of sin. That no judgment and everyone turned to rest in His grace.

The hidden sport in Chiang Mai By Patcharapol Vatcharachaisurapol
and Ariyaporn Prasopchokwattana (11th Grade)
From June 1 to 4, the Tepangkron Cup, the Thai pencak silat championship, was held at the PRC gymnasium. Pencak silat, which originated in Indonesia, is a one-of-a-kind martial art that has strong points in threatening enemies by using war cries and trampling the ground. Pencak silat, one of the most deadly martial arts in the world, was brought to Southern Thailand many years ago, and now, using this competition, the Pencak Silat Association of Thailand has brought it to the North via The Prince Royal’s College. “I’m very proud to compete here as one of the pencak silat fighters,” said Ilyas Sadara, a champion of the competition. “I have been the champion for five years. Every time I have competed, there has never been an easy opponent for me in the final round, but I can finally pass through it. “I have played this sport for nine years. Before that I was just a normal student who played normal sports like other boys, and after that someone invited me to play pencak silat. Then I tried it and fell in love with it. “To meet scoring criteria, the competition needs to be gorgeous and strong in every movement. Last but not least, I want to invite Thai people to play pancak silat, and I’m sure you will love it.” Pencak silat is a self-defense sport, and it is a beautiful culture from another country. We should learn pencak silat and pass it on to other people to make it more popular.

Edge of Tomorrow By Atikarn Konkhayan (11th grade) The epic action of “Edge of tomorrow” is about aliens’ attacking the earth in the future continuously. Never can any military in the world defeat them. William Cage (Tom Cruise) is a military public relations officer who has never seen combat. Killed within minutes, Cage wakes up in the past and realizes that he has thrown into some kind of time warp that sees him fighting, dying and waking up time and time again. However, in doing this each time he encounters the enemies with increased skill from his previous fight. He finds an ally in Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt), an elite combatant known also as The Angel of Verdun, who understands Cage’s predicatment. The more Cage and Rita fight against aliens, the more chance they can overcome the war. What will it happen next? How many times does Cage have to fight and die? Find the answers and be excited by this military sci-fi movie “Edge of Tomorrow”! In my opinion, this movie is worth watching as it creates plenty of emotions e.g. amazement, excitement and humor. The story will show the audience another side of the military and the aliens with realistic effects. This movie is different from others, it shows you the tremendous power the aliens and plays with the idea of time by having a character that change the future in the past by remembering events and finding the solutions for the present.
Godzilla By Worasatri Pintasein (11th Grade) Godzilla, the latest Godzilla film franchise, is a 2014 American science fiction movie directed by Gareth Edwards. The film stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Lieutenant Ford Brodan, an EOD technician, Bryan Cranston as Joe Brody, Ford’s father, a nuclear physicist and former engineer at the Janjira nuclear plant, Ken Watanabe as Dr. Ishiro Serizawa and Sally Hawkins as Dr. Vivienne Graham, the scientists with Monarch, Elizabeth Olsen as Elle Brody, Ford’s wife, a nurse and many other more famous actors and actresses. This is the fifth Godzilla movie from America productions, a co-production between Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures. The film was released worldwide on May 15, 2014. Its opening weekend gross of $93.2 million, also this movie received positive reviews from critics as well. The lead role, Ford Brodan, is played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who is famous as a superhero with no power from an action comedy film “Kick-Ass”. His image was changed from a high school student to a cool guy technician. Ford went to see his father, Bryan, who lives in Japan to find the mystery of the earthquake that took his wife’s life. Not notice what will happen next. There are more creatures aside from Godzilla and they are trying to do something. Keeping on going back to see his family again, Ford has to face the enormous monsters so many time. Also he actually has the main role in saving the whole world. Being the franchise films that the one before was very successful, this film was expect to be good. With higher technologies and effects, its picture and sound are sure better that the 1998 Godzilla films. There’re also human drama that brings the story together and help the movie not to have too much of giant monsters smashing everything in sight. Exciting situations in the movie will thrill you. This Godzilla movie is really one of the best disaster films and creatures feature. From all the Godzilla films you have watched, are they always on our side? Keep your finger crossed in this movie, what is Godzilla going to do to our world?
X-Men: Days of Future Past By Monsicha Jakakul (11th grade) Before mutant extinction, Wolverine is sent to the past to prevent an event that turns mutants and humans against each other, and to fix history before mutants are hunted down by the sentinels, robots created by humans specifically for this task. “The future: a bleak desolate, place. Mutants and the humans who helped them, united in defeat by an enemy we could not stop. Is this the fate we have set for ourselves? Could we have done nothing to stop it?” says Charles Francis Xavier, better known as Professor X, one of the mutants who still believe that humans and mutants can live together harmoniously. X-Men: Days of Future Past, an action adventure movie based on the classic Marvel comic run, is part of the famous X-Men movie series. Seemingly, this is the climax of the series, which gathers remaining mutants who stand to fight for their kind, including both the characters from previous parts of the series and the ones that never appear before. Due to the plotline, the movie may be confusing for those who have never watched the X-Men series before, but it can still be understood and entertaining. In fact, this movie may convince latecomers to the series to watch the previous parts in order to study the story. For those who have watched the previous parts, especially X-Men: First Class, this movie is consistently enjoyable, and surely is a must-watch for X-Men fans.
