SECOND ISSUE, OCTOBER 2016

In Remembrance of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej We shall follow the path that His Majesty the King laid out for us. We will always be a loyal school under the patronage of the Chakri Dynasty.

SINCE 2005

A Message from the manager-director Dr. Sirinan Sriweraskul For seven decades, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej was Thailand’s guiding light. It has been more than an honor for Thais to be blessed with such a proficient King who was exceptionally capable in science, languages, music, arts, and sports. Over the past 70 years of his reign, more than 2,000 royal projects were established in order to help Thai people in every area. From his devotion and generosity, these projects have resulted in a high quality of life, not only in Thailand but also in several other countries, especially Bhutan. Moreover, His beautiful manner, daily routine, and the hard work he did for Thailand will forever be a role model for everyone, especially for The Prince Royal’s College. Seeing the significance in his remarks, PRC has integrated his royal guidance into our curriculum since 2004. His Philosophy of Sufficiency Economy has guided our school through globalization and sudden changes from technological development. As a result, the teachers and the administrators have created a better attitude and understanding toward Thai education and Thai students and therefore have been able to manage and propose an effective curriculum for the students since 2007. In 2011, The Prince Royal’s College was granted a sufficiency economy school award and was chosen as a sufficiency economy center of education. Even though he has passed away, his kindness, intelligence, knowledge, principle, and thought will always be with the community and the country. Furthermore, we will improve our success and goodness in order to be more prosperous. Let the world know that we are making an effort to create many amazing and useful things just like His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the greatest King of all.

He is still living in Thai peoples’ hearts. “He lives after death.”

With deepest sorrow and condolences on

the passing of our beloved King Bhumibol Adulyadej. His Royal Benevolence and Grace shall remain in our hearts eternally. Mothering Love : A Tribute By Sasipha Sirikhan and Siraphat Saelee (11th Grade)

Mother is a short word which has a very deep meaning. The woman who we call “mother” is that one person who endures the endless pain when giving birth to us. Mother is the only one person who is willing to give everything to us no matter what it is or how hard it will be. She is the only person who loves us without any conditions, who would sacrifice everything for us whether by giving up her youth, happiness, money, or even all of her valuables, including her life. She is the only one who has been protecting her little precious one since the first day of her pregnancy until the day her little precious one is strong enough to protect itself. Even though it was her most painful day when giving birth to us, it was also the happiest day when she first saw those innocent eyes and heard loud cries from us. The moment you achieve success in your studies, work, dreams, or life, do not forget to repay your mother by telling her how well you are doing and sharing good news with her. Take good care of her because she will have no one but you when she gets old. You should take care of her like she has done for you since you were young; do not leave her behind alone. Mother’s Day is the Queen’s birthday on the 12th of August in Thailand, so do not forget to say, “I love you.”

Playing sports is one good way to make yourself healthy--not only physically but also mentally. Therefore, in every semester, teachers and student council organize a competition for every class from grade 10 to grade 12. The purpose of this competition is not just to compete against each other but also to use our time wisely in the afternoon and after school. Moreover, the games strengthen PRC unity and spirit. Boys from grades 10- 12 compete for the championship. After many matches, championship game resulted in grade 12, class 7 beating grade 11, class 6 by a score of 6-5. The match was fierce. Grade 12 took the lead in the second round. This match was such a long game because the injury time took so long that the judge decided to give extra time. Everyone used their skills to the fullest.

Coming in 3rd place was grade 12, class 8. All teams played really well, and everyone had their own strategy. Even though there were quarrels during the competition, when every team finished a match, they all joined hand-in-hand and celebrated the PRC spirit that is in every PRC student’s blood.

It’s mountain, not rafts

By Thanakorn Chaininphun (10th Grade)

The summer is gone, but it’s still hot, isn’t it? The Mountain Float is one of the most attractive and unforgettable places to be during hot weather. Beautiful scenery, delicious food, and some cool activities are here. Mountain Float can give you an experience you will never forget. If you come here, you will be surrounded by nature. It is located at Mae Ngat Somboon Chon Dam, Mae Taeng District, Chiang Mai. It is made of five connected rafts. There are four different-sized houseboats and one restaurant. Approximately five minutes from the entrance of the dam, you will reach the dock using your own transport. From the dock, you will reach the Mountain Float using a long-tailed boat for general tourists or a speed boat for VIP. You can take photos of your lovely family and friends and the nice, natural scenery en route. There are many tasty recommended dishes to try at Mountain Float; for instance, cheesy deep-fried spring rolls, fried cabbage with fish sauce, and snapper steamed with soy sauce. The food is very delicious and not too expensive. Try those dishes, and they will easily impress you. Mountain Float also has many activities for you to do such as paddling, sea boxing, swimming, and more. Those activities can make you feel happy and put smile on your face. If you want to spend a night at Mountain Float, there are beautiful houseboats for you to stay, but you must book a houseboat before you come. Otherwise, you will have no place to stay for the night.

let’s go to the beach ! By Charina Phansri (10th Grade)

At Patong beach, one of the most famous beaches in Thailand, you can find almost everything because it’s just like Bangkok, but smaller and has a beach. Students or families who want to go on vacation when the weather is hot can come here. You can find many interesting activities to do, such as parasailing. You can find stands along the beach and parasail along the beach at the price of about 150-1800 baht. These stands also let you rent jet skis, so if you want to try jet skiing, you can try it here, too.

You can also go scuba diving and snorkeling, but you should book a tour first before going there so that you know how long it’s going to be, and you can plan for other activities. If you have a small child in your family, I suggest you go to the beach because the sand there is always wet, so it is very easy to build sand castles or dig a really big hole and play in it. In case you want to relax, you can book a tour for a spa or you can just walk down the road and find many Thai massages. If you love night-life, you can go to Bangla Road at night because many shops will be open at night. This road is a very popular place.

7

As for restaurants, according to TripAdvisor, the best one is Sizzle Rooftop Restaurant, but it is pretty expensive, so if you want to go to a good restaurant but you don’t want to spend so much money, you can go to Poo Nurntong Restaurant, it is ranked 5th on TripAdvisor, and is very cheap. For hotels, the best one is BYD Lofts Boutique Hotel Serviced Apartments; it is ranked 1st on TripAdvisor. Most people think there aren’t many cheap hotels at Patong beach, but there are actually lots of them. For example, the Tanawan Phuket Hotel, which you can get at only 523 Baht per night or Baramee Hip Hotel with the price of 397 Baht per night if you book it from the Agoda website. Sometimes, surfing competitions are held there, so if you’re interested in surfing but don’t know where you can join a competition in Thailand, you can join the ones at Patong beach. In October, a big event is coming up, it is called the Phuket Vegetarian Festival. There will be lots of good vegetarian food sold there, you can try some of it out.

1 Good Book to Read Biology for high school students

Recommend by: Fai Tachanakarn (11th Grade) Price: 190 Baht “This Biology book is very useful and suitable for everyone. The writer uses not-so-complicated words and it is easy to understand. Also, the book provides various picture illustrations that were drawn by the writer. This allows the reader to understand messages the writer wants to convey in this book more than using picture illustration from the Internet.” said Fai.

10 Tips for Studying Abroad By Purichaya Shinawatra, Chanya Khamkhananon, and Mathanaphada Prasertdee (11th Grade) 1. Learn a little bit of information, including the culture and customs, about the country you are visiting before you leave for it. You should also be concerned about the school rules. 2. Learn how to read a map instead of an electronic navigator. You never know if something will go wrong. Remember the streets and signs and be aware of them. 3. Before leaving, make sure you prepare information documents, for instance, your passport. It’s very important to have a valid passport, visas, and international insurance. Keep them with you all the time just in case something unexpected happens to you. Prepare clothes that are suitable for many seasons and occasions. 4. If you have a chance to take a nap or explore, EXPLORE. You will not regret it. The country you are visiting has many things that are different from your home country, so go out and discover them! 5. Reap as much experience as possible and don’t forget to pay attention in class. There are things that you don’t get to do in your own country, so make the most out of it. The different education system is also important. Some countries provide particular classes which can help you find who you really are and what... 6. Get yourself out of your comfort zone. If you are living with a host family, find a way to get to know them better. Start from a little conversation and try to spend as much time with them as you can! Remember to treat them right. Be polite and respect them. 7. Make friends and hang out with people from all over the world. Talk to students in your classes or join clubs and activities. This way you can form a network and find people that have similar interests with you. Don’t be afraid to make friends. Keep smiling! 8. Always look through your bank statement. Using credit and debit cards is convenient, but can be tricky as well. Shopping online is what you need to be aware of. Most people are not concerned about their spending while on the internet. You tend to make a more sensible decision with cash in your hands than cards. In order to avoid any of these financial conflicts, always check your money balance and make a budget planner. That way, you can keep track of where the money goes. 9. Fight homesickness. Homesickness could be one of your struggles during your exchange year, so keep in contact with your friends and family back home. Use video calls, text messages, or even regular phone calls to stay in touch with them, but don’t contact them too often. Spend most of your time with your host family and friends as much as you can. 10. Watch out for your DIET! Trying new local food is a good experience, but remember to exercise regularly. It will keep you fit and in shape.

HOW TO LOSE WEIGHT By Panadda Boontom (11th Grade)

“Being beautiful is being skinny.” This quote sticks in many girls’ minds, and mine, too. I’m trying to

follow some tips to lose weight from the internet. Everyone knows what they should do to lose weight, but they cannot do it. Losing weight sounds not easy, but for me, it takes time. From my experience and research, here are some tips for you.

1

Change your eating habits

As you know ‘avoiding sugars and carbohydrates’ is the one way to help you lose weight. Did you know? It actually helps! With my experience, you can eat those but just EAT LESS, especially sugars (which are in soft drinks, fruits and snacks, or even sticky rice—you should have these things less!). If you are really hungry, you can eat something like no-sugar soy milk or no-carbohydrate noodles (which we call ‘Kao Laow’). However, do not forget to eat slowly and chew as many times as you can.

2

Change your living habits

Changing your habits also can help you lose your weight. I can say congrats to you all because there is research from the University of Chicago that says sleeping more can help you lose weight. It said that this will burn calories, boost fat loss, and the important thing is it keeps your brain focused! I also want to suggest that you drink a big bottle of water every day. Actually, water doesn’t have anything to do with your fat (except it can boost your metabolism), but it can make you feel full. I can say from experience that water doesn’t just make you feel full, it also makes your skin naturally glow, flushes out waste from your body, and decreases bad breath. Here is a formula which can help you calculate how many milliliters of water you should drink per day. Your weight in kilograms = w ;;;; [w * 29.5] / (0.454 * 2) = amount of water should drink every day

3

do not be lazy

Besides eating less, drinking water, and sleeping more, you also need to work out. Only 30 minutes per day will help. Do not say that you do not have time because you have to study hard. Just always try to move more.

4

be patient !

In the beginning, I told you losing weight takes time. I lost 10 kg in 1 year. It looks like I lost only a little, but I haven’t experienced a yo-yo effect, and now I can eat whatever I like (sometimes). You just have to continue, wait, and you will see the result. Just be happy with your lifestyle change. Do it like it’s your routine and do not be depressed.

Running Girl By Pasikarn Udchachon (11th Grade)

Sirapat Mahawan (Mai) Grade : 9 Class : 6 Motto : Chances are not like air. You don’t get them every day. 14-year- old Sirapat is a talented runner from grade 9 at PRC. She began her dream as a swimmer, and then became a runner. She has won many awards from being a runner and also had a chance to train with the National Athletes Team in Chiang Mai last year. Considering her 3.85 GPA, you might say that she’s doing well at everything. Sirapat started swimming when she was 7 years old. She thinks swimming is a good sport, but there weren’t any awards to keep her motivated, so she joined a school track team. As an athlete, she has to have good time-management. “You have to be on time when you go to practice, especially with the National Athletes Team because they are serious all the time. After school, I have to head to the stadium on time. I get back home around 7:00 p.m., and after that I have to deal with my homework. No matter how tired from practice I am, I have to do my homework. I know that it’s hard to manage, but it’s my duty to do, and it’s what I decided to do,” she said. Her biggest problem is that she doesn’t have much time to practice. She only practices after school, and she thinks that it’s not enough.

11

Her most memorable moment is when she came to practice with the National Athletes Team for the first time. Sirapat said, “Everything was a new experience for me, and I was so excited. I got to know many famous and talented athletes in the first day. They gave me a lot of advice. My heart is full of hope that someday in the future, I will be a very good athlete like them and also, I hope to have another chance to practice with the National Athlete Team to improve my skill. They always cheer me up. They are very professional. I want to be like them someday.” Her dad is also an athlete, so he always understands her and gives her advice. Many people think she’s going to be an athlete, but she wants to be a doctor for a living. She said she knows the preciousness of life. She wants to help people and take care of the people in her family. Sirapat’s advice for other students is no matter how hard your life is, you have to be patient and think positively, and then everything will be okay. Be on time because that shows how professional you are. Finally, don’t lose your hope whenever you are down.

Animal Protector By Pailin Makee and Natchanun Patnitichai (11th Grade)

Chawit Deesomsak (Folk) Grade : 11 Class : 6

Motto : If you have a dream, follow it and do your BEST.

Can you believe that there is a boy who works to protect animals who is only 17 years old? It may sound unbelievable, but we know the story of an upper-secondary student, Chawit Deesomsak. Chawit is studying in the 11th grade at The Prince Royal’s College, as you may know. His family has a snake farm called "Farm Ngu Suay Ngam.” That is the reason why he has exotic animals, such as owls, snakes, giant tortoises, etc. as pets. Many people might wonder why he treats these kinds of animals. His main purpose is to conserve wild animals; moreover, he wants to try new things. Chawit started to treat these animals when he was a child. He was interested in many kinds of wild animals as a kid. He loves to look after his animals on his farm with his father. Furthermore, he started to join Thailand Exotic Pet-keepers Association (TEPA) as a staff member because he thought that every single animal has their own value and should not be taken advantage of by humans.

12

The difficulty of doing this job is when people criticize him. Others think “Are you abnormal?” “Why don’t you do like what normal people do?”; Despite these criticisms, he ignores them and acts he cannot hear them. If he listened to them, he would lose his encouragement. From then until now, he continues to follow his dream of dedicating his work to Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn and making TEPA a world-class organization. Now, one of his dreams has become true! He has dedicated his work to Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. He has tried very hard to do the best thing in his life and he is really proud of himself. He chose to be engrossed in what he loved. Although there were many obstacles in his path, he still persisted. He thinks that all this work has been worthwhile. If you feel exhausted, you should look at this 17-year- old boy and you will overcome hard times in your life. Above all, the key to success is to find your dream, to do your best to overcome all the obstacles placed in your path, and make it come true one day!

Portuguesa

By Teerapat Maboontham (11th Grade) If you’re thinking of countries in Europe, you may be thinking of Italy, Germany, Spain or somewhere else, but there is another country in Europe that only a few people know. One of the good qualities of this small country is the cuisine. Traditional dishes include various kinds of meat, seafood, fresh fish, dried and salted cod, and the famous Portuguese stew. The national sport in Portugal is football. In the last Euro Cup (2016), Portugal won over France in the final 1-0. Eder was responsible for the goal that led to Portugal’s first national trophy in the history of the nation. Also, don’t forget the man well-known around the world as the best football player, Cristiano Ronaldo.
