SPRING 2021
A NOTE FROM OUR DIRECTOR Spring Update
T
We continue to wish you and your loved ones well. We mean it.
he Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department (PRCS) hopes that you and your loved ones are doing well. While this statement may just seem like one made out of courtesy, I want to emphasize the genuineness of it. The entire PRCS team really wants to express our heartfelt concern and care for you and your family. We have seen the gripping effects of COVID-19 in our responses to those needing rental assistance because of job loss; to seniors who are feeling isolated and hesitant or unable to go to the grocery store; to young students needing extra school day learning support; to businesses trying to stay afloat; and to all of our general mental, physical, and spiritual health during the pandemic. To those who have lost loved ones this past year, our hearts and deep concern go out to you. We’ve said before that “We’re Here For You”, and I’m so proud of the incredible hard work, dedication and care that the PRCS team has reflected that statement during the response and recovery of COVID-19 to our community. Since the start of the pandemic, the PRCS Department quickly moved into action by providing: •
•
ON THE COVER
Over $3.17M worth of rental assistance distributed to nearly 3,550 residents and 1,016 households who have faced the threat of eviction Emergency food support and information and referral services to 1,200 unduplicated individuals and 700 households
• •
•
•
• • • •
Over 77,000 senior meals distributed Personal phone calls, distance porch visits, letter writing and virtual programs for homebound seniors Direct assistance to over 150 students for in-person school day learning pods The organization and management of the Downtown Outdoor Dining program The completion and supervision of the Magical Bridge Playground The re-opening of outdoor park and recreational amenities Homeless support services, shower facilities, and meal programs Numerous virtual and COVID-19 safe in person recreational programs and services
As we see spring bring new growth, there is budding optimism that the effects of wearing masks, being socially distance, washing hands, and now the provision of vaccines, is making a significant difference in getting us back to what once was “normal”. Thank you for your effort in this, for your patience with us as we collectively navigated closures and re-opening mandates; and for experiencing the value of parks and programs for the helping the mind, body, and soul – especially during these times. We continue to wish you and your loved ones well. We mean it.

Senior Peer Counseling Program The Senior Peer Counseling program works to ensure no one faces the challenges of aging alone. Specially-trained volunteer counselors provide weekly visits to adults age 55+ to help manage transitions and life changes such as health concerns, mobility issues, caregiver needs, and grief. Special care is taken to connect participants with someone who shares similar life-experiences and perspectives, with programs offered in languages such as English, Mandarin, Spanish, and Tagalog, and to participants who identify as LGBTQ. Peer counselors meet with participants via telephone, zoom or when possible in person. For more information contact Ann Blick-Hamer at 650-403-4300, x 4322 or email ablickhamer@peninsulafamilyservice.org.
Get App-y! If you are 55 or older and enjoy using apps, we have a great opportunity for you! In 2021 Peninsula Family Service will be recruiting a group of participants to try the Wysa app and provide feedback. It is natural to feel anxious during these difficult times and Wysa is an App that can support emotional health, relieve stress and anxiety through a variety of calming activities. Wysa has helped over two and a half million people and we want to know if you think older adults in San Mateo County will find it helpful too. Participants will receive gift cards. Tell a friend and sign-up together! For more information or to sign-up to test Wysa, email Arlene Aquino aaquino@peninsulafamilyservice.org or call 650-403-4300 ext. 4327. APRIL - JUNE ISSUE
