Spring/Summer 2012 Activity Guide
• Spring & Summer CLASS Cancellations made 1 week prior to the class start date will receive a refund less the $5 cancellation fee. See Summer Insert for camp & aquatics policy • Students who wish to withdraw from a class less than one week prior to the start date will receive a department credit which may be applied to any future recreation department activity, less the $5 cancellation fee. SINGLE DAY WORKSHOPS CANNOT BE REFUNDED AT THIS TIME. See Summer Insert for camp & aquatics policy • A $5 per class cancellation fee will be charged for processing refunds for Spring & Summer CLASSES - not camps & swimming. See Summer Insert for camp & aquatics policy. • In general, no refunds or credits will be issued after the class begins. • Students who are dissatisfied with a program for any reason must fill out a program evaluation prior to receiving a credit so we can make the class better in the future. Credits and refunds will be evaluated on a case by case basis by the program supervisor. This policy applies to our fee based recreation programs and not to: Adult sports leagues, building/facility rentals & fees, food concessions, special events, recreational (open) swimming, aerobics and fitness passes, trips and class materials fees.

Any person with a home Redwood City mailing address is considered a resident. A Redwood City P.O. Box or business address will not be taken as proof of residency. A non-resident is someone who lives in another city. We have reinstated Non-resident class fees.
SENIOR ASSISTANCE - NOW AVAILABLE
The Senior Discounted Fee is no longer applicable to general recreation classes. However, if you are 60 & over and are a resident of Redwood City, you may apply for financial assistance . Classes held directly at the Fair Oaks Community Center and the Veterans Memorial Senior Center do not apply and remain at special rates. SPANISH IMMERSION LIL LEARNERS PRESCHOOL
Age 3-5 This program is designed for children to develop social, cognitive, and physical skills in a stimulating and warm environment. Teachers implement a child-centered philosophy to create a curriculum responsive to all the children in the group. Children will be introduced to a variety of Pre-K concepts including language, math, art, science, music and movement. By creating an environment that balances teacher directed and unstructured activities, children will develop independence, confidence and a positive sense of the world around them. Children must be toilet trained and developmentally ready to be separated from their parents. Please be prepared to bring snacks for the class 1-2 times per session. Age 3-5 Research shows that total immersion is the best way for children to develop a long lasting foundation in the Spanish language. 90% of instruction will be in Spanish and 10% in English. The classes are designed to spark and maintain children’s interest in Spanish by engaging them in creative and enjoyable cultural activities such as dancing, singing, literature, art and games. Through immersion, children will learn the Spanish language naturally and easily as they master basic pre-school skills. Children must be toilet trained and developmentally ready to be separated from their parents. Please be prepared to bring snacks for the class 1-2 times per session. ABRACADABRA KIDS Age 4-6 with Parent with Wertman the Wizard Hocus Pocus- Abracadabra! Welcome to your first magic class! Students are introduced to magic through simple “selfworking” magic tricks which the junior magicians get to take home. Age 8-14 with Freshi Media Beginning Game Developers work in pairs to conceive, design and build their own original computer game from scratch. Everything created for their game is original to the team—the characters, the action, the background, the music and the format. Jennifer Henderson, M.A. Music, and award-winning professional flutist, is a professional musician with over 30 years of experience specializing in teaching young children’s music. She is a certified Suzuki Early Childhood Education and flute instructor who studied in Japan with Dr. Suzuki, the founder of the method. Her master’s degree in music is from Washington University. She has taught university and conservatory music and developed Suzuki programs in four states, as well as teaching in Jamaica and Japan.

Our classes challenge youngsters in a fun and exciting way combining music, movement, and motivation. Children and teens increase cardiovascular fitness, lose weight, elevate energy levels, enhance muscle tone, build confidence and self esteem, and reduce stress all at their own pace. Learn stance, footwork, and striking technique employing explosive punch and kick combinations on heavy bags for a super cardio total body conditioning workout. Along with culinary techniques we will cover knife skills, proper food safety and sanitation procedures as an integral part of the class. The innovative approach of this class takes total immersion to a new level, with a culinary class that covers not only essentials of the cuisine, but also the culture and culinary history of our topics.
During three interactive sessions, we’ll evaluate wines, identify components of wine, learn about the aroma wheel, rate wines, pair wine with food, and learn to buy wines that are available in any price range. Our final class will be held at the popular Martins West Gastropub on Main Street in Redwood City. Lab Fee: $20 payable at 1st class.
We will also discuss ingredient sourcing, prepare ahead shortcuts, and final meal hints. So bring your partner or friend and join us for fun while educating yourself with innovative techniques that includes plating and presentation skills and usually concludes with a sit down meal of our creations. The dog is taught to move freely and easily with the collar, so one day you barely have to use it. EARLY MORNING STEP AEROBICS & STRENGTH TRAINING With Rumi Asano Step by Jazzercise is a low-impact, high intensity workout that combines aerobic fitness training along with strength training, muscle toning and stretching. Easy to follow routines are done to today’s current music. Perfect for those who need to get their exercise training done early. Burn mega calories, while you increase your endurance and sculpt and tone muscles and core. Steps and weights are provided at the center. This class runs in 2 month sessions. MARTIAL ARTS & SPORTS CLASSES TAI CHI CHUAN WHOLE BODY MOVEMENT
with Linda Scheer, M.S. Vocational Rehab, practicing Tai Chi since 1988 and teaching since 1995. Tai Chi Chuan is a soft, internal energy martial art, promoting balance, health, and relaxation. The class covers Chi Kung warm-ups, the Tai Chi stance and principles, the short and long integrated forms and applications, and partner movement. The individual begins learning the basics and the form. Partner movement happens only when the student is comfortable with it and is approached without force. Standing massage may be included in order to relax you into the Tai Chi mindset, but it is purely optional. Wear comfortable clothing. Age 15+ Enjoy top-flight instruction from the staff of Stanford University Tennis Coach John Whitlinger and USPTA Professional Tom Sarsfield. Youth and adult classes of 3-8 students will consist of eight hours of instruction. Classes of two students will be converted into four hours of lessons. Students provide own rackets. IMPORTANT: In case of rain, contact the recreation dept. at 780-7311, Monday through Friday, 8am-5pm, within the hour before scheduled starting time for class status or check with the instructor at the court. If at any time the instructor is absent, report to the next scheduled lesson for makeup date. NO POSTPONEMENT ANNOUNCEMENT WILL BE INITIATED BY THE INSTRUCTOR OR THE REC. DEPT. Unless notified to the contrary, make up lessons will be forwarded to the next normal meeting day and time. The Adult Basketball leagues are once again in “Fast Break Mode”. Games are played on Thursday nights at the Red Morton Community Center Arena, on a FULL sized College basketball court. No Middle School-sized courts here. It’s wide open in Redwood City. We will use 2 Quality Basketball Officials and we use a “Shot Clock” during our Spring –Summer Leagues. We do not place individuals on specific teams, but will provide a place where teams can go to find additional players for their teams, should they need people. Free Agent Forms can be downloaded at : www.quickscores.com/redwoodcity You will be required to complete the entire form, including what sport you would like to play, age, level of ability, positions you play, and a current photo of you. The form will be kept on file in the Sports Commissioner’s office, and only be used as a guide for Team Managers. If you have been placed on an old Free Agent list in the past, you must complete the new form for 2009. Incomplete forms will not be processed. Another way to find a team is to go to the games directly, and ask the managers. We’ll do our best to find a team for you to play on.

SAMTRANS SENIOR MOBILITY PROGRAM A Mobility Ambassador can help you with many transportation-related issues, including planning a trip using public transit, finding a driver safety class, and learning about alternatives to driving such as community shuttles.
